Abstract:
It is shown how to embed a critical point in a smooth background equation of state so as to yield the critical exponents and critical amplitude ratios expected of a transition in the same universality class as the liquid-gas phase transition and the 3D Ising model. There are only two independent critical exponents; the relations $α+ 2β+ γ= 2$ and $β(δ- 1) = γ$ arise automatically, as does a new re…

The resulting equation of state has parameters which may be inferred by hydrodynamic modeling of heavy ion collisions in the Beam Energy Scan II at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

Abstract:
We present results of hydrodynamic modelling of Au-Au collisions from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7 to 200 GeV. Our simulations have three novel components. Firstly, we use a Linear EXtrapolation of Ultrarelativistic nucleon-nucleon Scattering to nucleus-nucleus collisions (LEXUS) inspired Monte-Carlo initial state model. Secondly, we use a crossover equation of state at finite baryon densities without a…

Whether Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) exhibits a phase transition at finite temperature and density is an open question. It is important for hydrodynamic modeling of heavy ion collisions and neutron star mergers. Lattice QCD simulations have definitively shown that the transition from hadrons to quarks and gluons is a crossover when the baryon chemical potential is zero or small. We combine the parametric scaling equation of state, usually associated with the 3D Ising model, with a background equation of state based on a smooth crossover from hadrons to quarks and gluons. Comparison to experimental data from the Beam Energy Scan II at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider or in heavy ion experiments at other accelerators may allow the critical exponents and amplitudes in the scaling equation of state to be determined for QCD if a critical point exists.

Generally one finds that a first order phase transition from baryons to quarks softens the equation of state so much that the star would collapse into a black hole. We consider a crossover equation of state, similar to the crossover that is found in lattice QCD studies at finite temperature and zero or small baryon chemical potentials. We find that with reasonable parameters it may be possible to support neutron stars up to about 2.2 solar masses. In that case 1 to 10% of the pressure would be contributed by quark matter in the central core of the highest mass stars.

We present a phenomenological parametrization of the phase diagram of QCD as a function of temperature $T$ and baryochemical potential $μ$. We present a phenomenological parametrization of the phase diagram of QCD as a function of temperature $T$ and baryochemical potential $μ$. The parametrization is constructed by introducing a switching function which controls the nature of the transition between the Hadron-Resonance Gas (HRG) and Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) phases of nuclear matter, such that the equation of state (EOS) possesses a rapid crossover at large $T$ and small $μ$, a critical point placed anywhere along the phase transition line, and a first-order transition at small $T$ and large $μ$. This EOS offers a convenient phenomenological tool for assessing the possible effects of the conjectured QCD critical point on heavy-ion observables.

We propose a dynamical mechanism which provides an interaction between the spins of hyperons and antihyperons and the vorticity of the baryon current in noncentral high energy nuclear collisions. The interaction is mediated by massive vector and scalar bosons which is well known to describe the nuclear spin-orbit force. It follows from the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation and leads to a strong-interaction Zeeman effect. The interaction may explain the difference in polarizations of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons as measured by the STAR Collaboration at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The signs and magnitudes of the meson-baryon couplings are closely connected to the binding energies of hypernuclei and to the abundance of hyperons in neutron stars.
