Analog category and complexity
Abstract: We study probabilistic variants of the Lusternik--Schnirelmann category and topological complexity, which bound the classical invariants from below. We present a number of computations illustrating both wide agreement and wide disagreement with the classical notions. Active Third-Person Imitation Learning
Abstract: We consider the problem of third-person imitation learning with the additional challenge that the learner must select the perspective from which they observe the expert. Growth of k-dimensional systoles in congruence coverings
Abstract: We study growth of absolute and homological $k$-dimensional systoles of arithmetic $n$-manifolds along congruence coverings. Our main interest is in the growth of systoles of manifolds whose real rank $r > 1$. Abstract: We show that the rational Novikov conjecture for a group $Γ$ of finite homological type follows from the mod 2 acyclicity of the Higson compactifcation of an E$Γ$. We then show that for groups of finite asymptotic dimension the Higson compactification is mod p acyclic for all p, and deduce the integral Novikov conjecture for these groups.

On the generalized Nielsen realization problem
Abstract: The main goal of this paper is to give the first examples of equivariant aspherical Poincare complexes, that are not realized by group actions on closed aspherical manifolds $M$. These will also provide new counterexamples to the Nielsen realization problem about lifting homotopy actions of finite groups to honest group actions. Our examples show that one cannot guarantee that a given action of… ▽ More

Isometries, rigidity, and universal covers
Abstract: We classify all closed, aspherical Riemannian manifolds M whose universal cover has indiscrete isometry group. One sample application is the theorem that any such M with word-hyperbolic fundamental group must be isometric to a negatively curved, locally symmetric manifold. Another application is the classification of all contractible Riemannian manifolds covering both compact and (noncompact, co… ▽ More

Hidden symmetry and arithmetic manifolds
Abstract: A "hidden symmetry" of a Riemannian manifold M is an isometry of a d-sheeted, 1<d<\infty, Riemannian cover of M which is not the lift of any isometry. In this paper we characterize the locally symmetric metric(s) on a closed, arithmetic manifold as the unique metric with infinitely many hidden symmetries.

On Invariants of Hirzebruch and Cheeger-Gromov
Abstract: We prove that, if M is a compact oriented manifold of dimension 4k+3, where k>0, such that pi_1(M) is not torsion-free, then there are infinitely many manifolds that are homotopic equivalent to M but not homeomorphic to it. To show the infinite size of the structure set of M, we construct a secondary invariant tau_(2): S(M)-->R that coincides with the rho-invariant of Cheeger-Gromov. In particul… ▽ More

On the zero-in-the-spectrum conjecture
Abstract: We prove that the answer to the "zero-in-the-spectrum" conjecture, in its form, suggested by J. Lott, is negative. Namely, we show that for any n > 5 there exists a closed n-dimensional manifold M, so that zero does not belong to the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator acting on the L^2 forms of all degrees on the universal covering of M.

Neighborhoods in Stratified Spaces with Two Strata
Abstract: We develop a theory of tubular neighborhoods for the lower strata in manifold stratified spaces with two strata. In these topologically stratified spaces, manifold approximate fibrations and teardrops play the role that fibre bundles and map** cylinders play in smoothly stratified spaces. Applications include the classification of neighborhood germs, the construction of exotic stratifications,… ▽ More

Surgery and Stratified Spaces
Abstract: This paper surveys the significant progress over the past couple of decades in the theory of stratified spaces through the application of controlled methods as well as through the application of intersection homology.
