The Physics of the B Factories
Abstract: This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary… ▽ More

Using Geant4 in the BaBar Simulation
Abstract: Babar was the first large experiment to incorporate Geant4 into its detector simulation. Since July 2001, 1.5 billion Babar events have been produced using this simulation. In a typical e+e- -> Upsilon(4s) -> B0 B0bar event, between 30 and 60 tracks are produced in the generator and propagated through the detector, using decay, electromagnetic and hadronic processes provided by the Geant4 toolki… ▽ More

A Resonant Cavity for Single-Shot Emittance Measurement
Abstract: We present a non-invasive, resonant cavity based approach to beam emittance measurement of a shot-to-shot non-circular beam pulse of multi-bunches. In a resonant cavity, desired field components can be enhanced up to Q_L_lambda/pi, where Q_L_lambda is the loaded Q of the resonance mode lambda, when the cavity resonant mode matches with the beam operating frequency. In particular, a Quad-cavity,… ▽ More

Plasma Lens Backgrounds at a Future Linear Collider
Abstract: A 'plasma lens' might be used to enhance the luminosity of future linear colliders. However, its utility for this purpose depends largely on the potential backgrounds that may be induced by the insertion of such a device in the interaction region of the detector. In this note we identify different sources of such backgrounds, calculate their event rates from the elementary interaction processes,… ▽ More

Observation of Plasma Focusing of a 28.5 GeV Positron Beam
Abstract: The observation of plasma focusing of a 28.5 GeV positron beam is reported. The plasma was formed by ionizing a nitrogen jet only 3 mm thick. Simultaneous focusing in both transverse dimensions was observed with effective focusing strengths of order Tesla per micron. The minimum area of the beam spot was reduced by a factor of 2.0 +/- 0.3 by the plasma. The longitudinal beam envelope was measure… ▽ More

Results on Plasma Focusing of High Energy Density Electron and Positron Beams
Abstract: We present results from the SLAC E-150 experiment on plasma focusing of high energy density electron and, for the first time, positron beams. We also discuss measurements on plasma lens-induced synchrotron radiation, longitudinal dynamics of plasma focusing, and laser- and beam-plasma interactions.
