Surface heat flow is a key parameter for the geothermal structure, rheology, and hence the dynamics of continents. However, the coverage of heat flow measurements is still poor in many continental areas. By transforming the stable nonlinear heat conduction equation into a Poisson's one, we develop a method to infer surface heat flow for a stable or quasi-stable continent from a Parker's-like formula. This formula provides the relationship between the Fourier transform of surface heat flow and the sum of the Fourier transform of the powers of geometry for the heat production (HP) interface in the continental lithosphere. Once the interface geometry is known, one to three dimensional distribution of the surface heat flow can be calculated accurately by this formula. As a case study, we estimate the three-dimensional surface heat flows for the Ordos geological block and its adjacent areas in China on a $1^\circ \times 1^\circ$ grid based on a simple layered constant HP model. Comparing to the measurements, most relative errors of the heat flows inferred are less than 20\%, showing this method is a favorable way to estimate surface heat flow for stable or quasi-stable continental regions where measurements are rare or absent.

We present a detailed measurement of charged two-pion correlation functions in 0%-30% centrality $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV Au$+$Au collisions by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data are well described by Bose-Einstein correlation functions stemming from Lévy-stable source distributions. Using a fine transverse momentum binning, we extract the correlation strength parameter $λ$, the Lévy index of stability $α$ and the Lévy length scale parameter $R$ as a function of average transverse mass of the pair $m_T$. We find that the positively and the negatively charged pion pairs yield consistent results, and their correlation functions are represented, within uncertainties, by the same Lévy-stable source functions. The $λ(m_T)$ measurements indicate a decrease of the strength of the correlations at low $m_T$. The Lévy length scale parameter $R(m_T)$ decreases with increasing $m_T$, following a hydrodynamically predicted type of scaling behavior. The values of the Lévy index of stability $α$ are found to be significantly lower than the Gaussian case of $α=2$, but also significantly larger than the conjectured value that may characterize the critical point of a second-order quark-hadron phase transition.

Obtaining the heat production (HP) in the lithosphere has always been a challenge for the geotherms and evolution of continents. By transforming the nonlinear stable heat conduction equation into a linear Poisson's potential one, we propose a method to infer the HP in the stable continental lithosphere. This method estimates the HP through the inversion of the corresponding heat flow (HF) observations. Either the distribution of HP within the lithosphere or geometry of HP interfaces (even the both) can be inverted. Herein we focus on the inversion of the geometry of the HP interface. An analogical Parker-Oldenburg formula, which is often used in the inversion of potential field, is deduced for this purpose. This analogical formula is based on a relationship between the Fourier transform of the corresponding HF observations and the sum of the Fourier transform for the powers of the interface geometry. When the mean depth of the HP interface and the HP contrast between the two media are given, one to three-dimensional geometry of the HP interface can be iteratively calculated. As a case study, we construct a HP model for the lithosphere of the Ordos geological block and its adjacent area in China, in which three-dimensional geometry of the upper crustal HP interface is estimated. It is found that the geometry of this HP interface distribute uneven in a magnitude of dozens of km. With this HP model, the geotherms for the Ordos geological block and its adjacent area is calculated further, which fit the constraints from the studies on the xenolith and tectonics well.

It is thought that paleo-magnetism has the incapability in providing paleo-longitude. To obtain this important location parameter many other indirect methods have been developed based on different assumptions. Here we present a scanning method to derive the paleo-longitude from the usual paleo-magnetic measurements. This method takes into account the contributions to the Earth's magnetic potential from additional dipoles with their axes in the equatorial plane, which were omitted by the traditional paleo-magnetism. In this method, firstly we assume that $θ_p$ and $λ_p$ are accurate (or determined well enough), and define a cost function; And secondly we minimize this function by systematically searching through all longitudes and latitudes in their domain; Finally when a local minima of this cost function reaches, the corresponding longitude is the paleo-longitude that we look for. Simultaneously the paleo-latitude is obtained. Synthetic experiments show that this method works very well when there are no errors in the geomagntic measurements (Components of magnetic field: $B_x, B_y, B_z$, or declination $D$ and inclination $I$). If there exist errors in geomagntic measurements, we recommend adding a Tikhonov regularization factor to the cost function for deriving reasonable paleo-longitude, and provide two examples. Error analysis shows that the main error sources for paleo-longitude are $B_y$ and/or $I$ in our method. In addition, such a cost function and its like could be used as a theoretical framework that can directly invert the paleo-longitude, paleo-latitude, and even the location of the paleo-geomagnetic poles simultaneously from the paleo-geomagnetic measurements through any appropriate inversion method.

When the trap** light intensity is modulated sinusoidally, the particle in the trap undergoes forced oscillation and the amplitude of the oscillation depends directly on the modulated frequency. Based on a simple spring model, we fit the amplitudes versus the modulated frequencies and obtain the stiffness of the optical trap and the mass of the trapped particle. The fitting results show that, for a certain particle, the stiffness varies linearly with the trap** light intensity while the mass is consistent. The density of the micro-particle is then estimated and could be used to classify different kinds of absorbing particles, like C and CuO.

We present a trajectory dynamically tracing compensation method to smooth the spatial fluctuation of the static magnetic field (C-field) that provides a quantization axis in the fountain clock. The C-field coil current is point-to-point adjusted in accordance to the atoms experienced magnetic field along the flight trajectory. A homogeneous field with a 0.2 nT uncertainty is realized compared to 5 nT under the static magnetic field with constant current during the Ramsey interrogation. The corresponding uncertainty associated with the second-order Zeeman shift that we calculate is improved by one order of magnitude. The technique provides an alternative method to improve the magnetic field uniformity particularly for large-scale equipment that is difficult to machine with magnetic shielding. Our method is simple, robust, and essentially important in frequency evaluations concerning the dominant uncertainty contribution due to the quadratic Zeeman shift.

The interaction between the magnetic field and the elastic deformation field in the crust is studied in a simplified way. The magnetic fields generated by the line singularities in a magnetized elastic half-plane are investigated. Using the general solution and Fourier transform technique, the exact solutions for the generated magnetic inductions due to various cases are obtained in a closed form. The results show that the line concentrated force will induced a perturbed magnetic field; The induced magnetic field will indicate the line concentrated force in reverse. The distribution of the vertical component of the magnetic induction caused by the line mechanical singularities is simpler than that of the horizontal component, and it is zero at the origin when the applied magnetic field and the line concentrated force satisfies some conditions. This result is applied to locate the epicenters of the earthquakes and historical earthquakes occurred in the Chinese continental crust. Results show that more than 80\% epicenters are at or near the zero-contours of the vertical component of the magnetic induction observed from satellite. These regions of zero-contours, especially those in active tectonic zones, could be the possible seismogenic zones in the future. The zero-contours of the vertical component of the magnetic induction from satellite could be as geophysical constraints to the risk information on the shallow seismicities, or they can be used as an early monitor for the shallow seismicities in the continental crust, or an auxiliary sign in the determination of the great historical earthquake.

In this paper, we consider methods whereby a subset of players in a $(k,n)$-threshold scheme can "repair" another player's share in the event that their share has been lost or corrupted. This will take place without the participation of the dealer who set up the scheme. The repairing protocol should not compromise the (unconditional) security of the threshold scheme, and it should be efficient, where efficiency is measured in terms of the amount of information exchanged during the repairing process. We study two approaches to repairing. The first method is based on the "enrollment protocol" from \cite{NSG} which was originally developed to add a new player to a threshold scheme (without the participation of the dealer) after the scheme was set up. The second method distributes "multiple shares" to each player, as defined by a suitable combinatorial design. This method results in larger shares, but lower communication complexity, as compared to the first method.

Based on these $2\times 10^7$ samples, the empirical probabilities of $μ(n)$ of taking $-1$, 0, and 1 in classic statistics are calculated and compared with the theoretical probabilities in number theory. The numerical consistency between these two kinds of probability show that $μ(n)$ could be seen as an independent random sequence when $n$ is large. The expectation and variance of the $μ(n)$ are $0$ and $6 n/ π^2$, respectively. Furthermore, we show that any conjecture of the Mertens type is false in probability sense, and present an upper bound for cumulative sums of $μ(n)$ with a certain probability.

We study the long-range directed polymer model on $\mathbbm{Z}$ in a random environment, where the underlying random walk lies in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable process for some $α\in(0,2]$. Similar to the more classic nearest-neighbor directed polymer model, as the inverse temperature $β$ increases, the model undergoes a transition from a weak disorder regime to a strong disorder regime. We extend most of the important results known for the nearest-neighbor directed polymer model on $\mathbbm{Z}^d$ to the long-range model on $\mathbbm{Z}$. More precisely, we show that in the entire weak disorder regime, the polymer satisfies an analogue of invariance principle, while in the so-called very strong disorder regime, the polymer end point distribution contains macroscopic atoms and under some mild conditions, the polymer has a super-$α$-stable motion. Furthermore, for $α\in (1,2]$, we show that the model is in the very strong disorder regime whenever $β>0$, and we give explicit bounds on the free energy.

Combining two different analysis techniques, results were obtained in the transverse momentum range of $0.4<p_{T}<4.0$ GeV/$c$. At low $p_T$ the second-order coefficients, $v_2$, are similar to the ones observed in hadrons. Third order coefficients, $v_3$, are nonzero and almost independent of centrality. These new results on $v_2$ and $v_3$, combined with previously published results on yields, are compared to model calculations that provide yields and asymmetries in the same framework. Those models are challenged to explain simultaneously the observed large yield and large azimuthal anisotropies.

Using $π^0$ in Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ and 200 GeV measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and and charged hadrons in Pb$+$Pb collisions measured by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, we studied the scaling properties of $S_{\rm loss}$ as a function of a number of variables: the number of participants, $N_{\rm part}$, the number of quark participants, $N_{\rm qp}$, the charged-particle density, $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$, and the Bjorken energy density times the equilibration time, $\varepsilon_{\rm Bj}τ_{0}$. We find that the $p_T$ where $S_{\rm loss}$ has its maximum, varies both with centrality and collision energy. Above the maximum, $S_{\rm loss}$ tends to follow a power-law function with all four scaling variables. The data at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and 2.76 TeV, for sufficiently high particle densities, have a common scaling of $S_{\rm loss}$ with $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ and $\varepsilon_{\rm Bj}τ_{0}$, lending insight on the physics of parton energy loss.

For all $A$$+$$A$ collisions down to $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7$ GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with $N_{q{\rm p}}$ than scaling with $N_{\rm part}$. The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has measured $φ$ meson production and its nuclear modification in asymmetric Cu$+$Au heavy-ion collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV at both forward Cu-going direction ($1.2<y<2.2$) and backward Au-going direction ($-2.2<y<-1.2$), rapidities. The measurements are performed via the dimuon decay channel and reported as a function of the number of participating nucleons, rapidity, and transverse momentum. In the most central events, 0\%--20\% centrality, the $φ$ meson yield integrated over $1<p_T<5$ GeV/$c$ prefers a smaller value, which means a larger nuclear modification, in the Cu-going direction compared to the Au-going direction. Additionally, the nuclear-modification factor in Cu$+$Au collisions averaged over all centrality is measured to be similar to the previous PHENIX result in $d$$+$Au collisions for these rapidities.

The \ee yield is compared to the expectations from known sources. In the low-mass region ($m_{ee}=0.30$--0.76 GeV/$c^2$) there is an enhancement that increases with centrality and is distributed over the entire pair \pt range measured. It is significantly smaller than previously reported by the PHENIX experiment and amounts to $2.3\pm0.4({\rm stat})\pm0.4({\rm syst})\pm0.2^{\rm model}$ or to $1.7\pm0.3({\rm stat})\pm0.3({\rm syst})\pm0.2^{\rm model}$ for minimum bias collisions when the open-heavy-flavor contribution is calculated with {\sc pythia} or {\sc mc@nlo}, respectively. The inclusive mass and $p_T$ distributions as well as the centrality dependence are well reproduced by model calculations where the enhancement mainly originates from the melting of the $ρ$ meson resonance as the system approaches chiral symmetry restoration. In the intermediate-mass region ($m_{ee}$ = 1.2--2.8 GeV/$c^2$), the data hint at a significant contribution in addition to the yield from the semileptonic decays of heavy-flavor mesons.

Jets are reconstructed using the $R=0.3$ anti-$k_{t}$ algorithm from energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and charged tracks in multi-wire proportional chambers, and the jet transverse momentum ($p_T$) spectra are corrected for the detector response. Spectra are reported for jets with $12<p_T<50$ GeV/$c$, within a pseudorapidity acceptance of $\left|η\right|<0.3$. The nuclear-modification factor ($R_{d{\rm Au}}$) values for 0\%--100\% $d$$+$Au events are found to be consistent with unity, constraining the role of initial state effects on jet production. However, the centrality-selected $R_{d{\rm Au}}$ values and central-to-peripheral ratios ($R_{\rm CP}$) show large, $p_T$-dependent deviations from unity, which challenge the conventional models that relate hard-process rates and soft-particle production in collisions involving nuclei.

We present the first measurement of elliptic ($v_2$) and triangular ($v_3$) flow in high-multiplicity $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Two-particle correlations, where the particles have a large separation in pseudorapidity, are compared in $^{3}$He$+$Au and in $p$$+$$p$ collisions and indicate that collective effects dominate the second and third Fourier components for the correlations observed in the $^{3}$He$+$Au system. The collective behavior is quantified in terms of elliptic $v_2$ and triangular $v_3$ anisotropy coefficients measured with respect to their corresponding event planes. The $v_2$ values are comparable to those previously measured in $d$$+$Au collisions at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy. Comparison with various theoretical predictions are made, including to models where the hot spots created by the impact of the three $^{3}$He nucleons on the Au nucleus expand hydrodynamically to generate the triangular flow. The agreement of these models with data may indicate the formation of low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma even in these small collision systems.

Similar behavior was previously observed for inclusive charged hadrons and open heavy flavor indicating similar cold-nuclear-matter effects.

The ratios of cumulants (e.g. $C_1/C_2$, $C_3/C_1$) of the net-charge distributions, which can be related to volume independent susceptibility ratios, are studied as a function of centrality and energy. These quantities are important to understand the quantum-chromodynamics phase diagram and possible existence of a critical end point. The measured values are very well described by expectation from negative binomial distributions. We do not observe any nonmonotonic behavior in the ratios of the cumulants as a function of collision energy. The measured values of $C_1/C_2 = μ/σ^2$ and $C_3/C_1 = Sσ^3/μ$ can be directly compared to lattice quantum-chromodynamics calculations and thus allow extraction of both the chemical freeze-out temperature and the baryon chemical potential at each center-of-mass energy.

We analytically study the band-structure, finding how the Wannier states evolve as two sinusoidal lattices are moved relative to one-another, and relate this evolution to the center of mass motion of an atomic cloud. In this document the PHENIX collaboration proposes a major upgrade to the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. This upgrade, sPHENIX, enables an extremely rich jet and beauty quarkonia physics program addressing fundamental questions about the nature of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP), discovered experimentally at RHIC to be a perfect fluid. The startling dynamics of the QGP on fluid-like length scales is an emergent property of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), seemingly implicit in the Lagrangian but stubbornly hidden from view. QCD is an asymptotically free theory, but how QCD manifests as a strongly coupled fluid with specific shear viscosity near $T_C$, as low as allowed by the uncertainty principle, is as fundamental an issue as that of how confinement itself arises.

The $v_n$ coefficients show characteristic patterns consistent with hydrodynamical expansion of the matter produced in the collisions. For each harmonic $n$, a modified valence quark number $n_q$ scaling plotting $v_n/(n_q)^{n/2}$ versus ${\rm KE}_T/n_q$ is observed to yield a single curve for all the measured particle species for a broad range of transverse kinetic energies ${\rm KE}_T$. A simultaneous blast wave model fit to the observed particle spectra and $v_n(p_T)$ coefficients identifies spatial eccentricities $s_n$ at freeze-out, which are much smaller than the initial-state geometric values.

Two-pion interferometry measurements are used to extract the Gaussian radii $R_{\rm out}$, $R_{\rm side}$, and $R_{\rm long}$, of the pion emission sources produced in Cu$+$Cu and Au$+$Au collisions at several beam collision energies $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ at PHENIX. The extracted radii, which are compared to recent STAR and ALICE data, show characteristic scaling patterns as a function of the initial transverse size $\bar{R}$ of the collision systems and the transverse mass $m_T$ of the emitted pion pairs, consistent with hydrodynamiclike expansion. Specific combinations of the three-dimensional radii that are sensitive to the medium expansion velocity and lifetime, and the pion emission time duration show nonmonotonic $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ dependencies. The nonmonotonic behaviors exhibited by these quantities point to a softening of the equation of state that may coincide with the critical end point in the phase diagram for nuclear matter.

We present the midrapidity charged pion invariant cross sections and the ratio of $π^-$-to-$π^+$ production ($5<p_T<13$ GeV/$c$), together with the double-helicity asymmetries ($5<p_T<12$ GeV/$c$) in polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV. The cross section measurements are consistent with perturbative calculations in quantum chromodynamics within large uncertainties in the calculation due to the choice of factorization, renormalization, and fragmentation scales. However, the theoretical calculation of the ratio of $π^-$-to-$π^+$ production when considering these scale uncertainties overestimates the measured value, suggesting further investigation of the uncertainties on the charge-separated pion fragmentation functions is needed. Due to cancellations of uncertainties in the charge ratio, direct inclusion of these ratio data in future parameterizations should improve constraints on the flavor dependence of quark fragmentation functions to pions. By measuring charge-separated pion asymmetries, one can gain sensitivity to the sign of $ΔG$ through the opposite sign of the up and down quark helicity distributions in conjunction with preferential fragmentation of positive pions from up quarks and negative pions from down quarks. The double-helicity asymmetries presented are sensitive to the gluon helicity distribution over an $x$ range of $\sim$0.03--0.16.

The standard model (SM) of particle physics is spectacularly successful, yet the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment $(g-2)_μ$ deviates from SM calculations by 3.6$σ$. Several theoretical models attribute this to the existence of a "dark photon," an additional U(1) gauge boson, which is weakly coupled to ordinary photons. The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has searched for a dark photon, $U$, in $π^0,η\rightarrow γe^+e^-$ decays and obtained upper limits of $\mathcal{O}(2\times10^{-6})$ on $U$-$γ$ mixing at 90% CL for the mass range $30<m_U<90$ MeV/$c^2$. Combined with other experimental limits, the remaining region in the $U$-$γ$ mixing parameter space that can explain the $(g-2)_μ$ deviation from its SM value is nearly completely excluded at the 90% confidence level, with only a small region of $29<m_U<32$ MeV/$c^2$ remaining.

The measured cross section for $0.5<p_T<5.0$~GeV/$c$ and $3.0<|η|<3.8$ is well described by a next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculation. The asymmetries $A_N$ have been measured as a function of Feynman-$x$ ($x_F$) from $0.2<|x_{F}|<0.7$, as well as transverse momentum ($p_T$) from $1.0<p_T<4.5$~GeV/$c$. The asymmetry averaged over positive $x_F$ is $\langle{A_{N}}\rangle=0.061{\pm}0.014$. The results are consistent with prior transverse single-spin measurements of forward $η$ and $π^{0}$ mesons at various energies in overlap** $x_F$ ranges. Comparison of different particle species can help to determine the origin of the large observed asymmetries in $p^{\uparrow}+p$ collisions.

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the centrality dependence of the direct photon yield from Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV down to $p_T=0.4$ GeV/$c$. Photons are detected via photon conversions to $e^+e^-$ pairs and an improved technique is applied that minimizes the systematic uncertainties that usually limit direct photon measurements, in particular at low $p_T$. We find an excess of direct photons above the $N_{\rm coll}$-scaled yield measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. This excess yield is well described by an exponential distribution with an inverse slope of about 240 MeV/$c$ in the $p_T$ range from 0.6--2.0 GeV/$c$. While the shape of the $p_T$ distribution is independent of centrality within the experimental uncertainties, the yield increases rapidly with increasing centrality, scaling approximately with $N_{\rm part}^α$, where $α=1.48{\pm}0.08({\rm stat}){\pm}0.04({\rm syst})$.

The measured transverse-momentum spectra are used to determine the nuclear modification factor of $K_S^0$ and $K^{*0}$ mesons in $d$$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions at different centralities. In the $d$$+$Au collisions, the nuclear modification factor of $K_S^0$ and $K^{*0}$ mesons is almost constant as a function of transverse momentum and is consistent with unity showing that cold-nuclear-matter effects do not play a significant role in the measured kinematic range. In Cu$+$Cu collisions, within the uncertainties no nuclear modification is registered in peripheral collisions. In central collisions, both mesons show suppression relative to the expectations from the $p$$+$$p$ yield scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions in the Cu$+$Cu system. In the $p_T$ range 2--5 GeV/$c$, the strange mesons ($K_S^0$, $K^{*0}$) similarly to the $φ$ meson with hidden strangeness, show an intermediate suppression between the more suppressed light quark mesons ($π^0$) and the nonsuppressed baryons ($p$, $\bar{p}$). At higher transverse momentum, $p_T>5$ GeV/$c$, production of all particles is similarly suppressed by a factor of $\approx$ 2.

We present measurements of electrons and positrons from the semileptonic decays of heavy-flavor hadrons at midrapidity ($|y|<$ 0.35) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ GeV. The data were collected in 2010 by the PHENIX experiment that included the new hadron-blind detector. The invariant yield of electrons from heavy-flavor decays is measured as a function of transverse momentum in the range $1<p_T^e<5$ GeV/$c$. The invariant yield per binary collision is slightly enhanced above the $p$$+$$p$ reference in Au$+$Au 0%--20%, 20%--40% and 40%--60% centralities at a comparable level. This may be a result of the interplay between initial-state Cronin effects, final-state flow, and energy loss for heavy-quark production at this low beam energy. The $v_2$ of electrons from heavy-flavor decays is nonzero when averaged between $1.3<p_T^e<2.5$ GeV/$c$ from $0<{\rm centrality}<40$% collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ GeV. For 20%--40% centrality collisions, the $v_2$ at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ GeV is smaller than that for heavy flavor decays at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The $v_2$ of the electrons from heavy-flavor decay at the lower beam energy is also smaller than $v_2$ for pions. Both results indicate that the heavy-quarks interact with the medium formed in these collisions, but they may not be at the same level of thermalization with the medium as observed at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV.

We calculate the ground state of a Bose gas trapped on a two-leg ladder where Raman-induced hop** mimics the effect of a large magnetic field. In the mean-field limit, where there are large numbers of particles per site, this maps onto a uniformly frustrated two-leg ladder classical spin model. The net particle current always vanishes in the ground state, but generically there is a finite "chiral current", corresponding to equal and opposite flow on the two legs. We vary the strength of the hop** across the rungs of the ladder and the interaction between the bosons. We find three phases: (1) A "saturated chiral current phase" (SCCP), where the density is uniform and the chiral current is simply related to the strength of the magnetic field. In this state the only broken symmetry is the $U(1)$ condensate phase. (2) A "biased ladder phase" (BLP), where the density is higher on one leg than the other. The fluid velocity is higher on the lower density leg, so the net current is zero. In addition to the $U(1)$ condensate phase, this has a broken $Z_2$ reflection symmetry. (3) A "modulated density phase" (MDP), where the atomic density is modulated along the ladder. In addition to the $U(1)$ condensate phase, this has a second broken $U(1)$ symmetry corresponding to translations of the density wave. We further study the fluctuations of the condensate in the BLP, finding a roton-maxon like excitation spectrum. Decreasing the hop** along the rungs softens the spectrum. As the energy of the "roton" reaches to zero, the BLP becomes unstable. We describe the experimental signatures of these phases, including the response to changing the frequency of the Raman transition.

The charged hadron is measured at midrapidity $|η|<0.35$, and the energy is measured at large rapidity ($-3.7<η<-3.1$, Au-going direction). An enhanced near-side angular correlation across $|Δη| >$ 2.75 is observed in $d$$+$Au collisions. Using the event plane method applied to the Au-going energy distribution, we extract the anisotropy strength $v_2$ for inclusive charged hadrons at midrapidity up to $p_T=4.5$ GeV/$c$. We also present the measurement of $v_2$ for identified $π^{\pm}$ and (anti)protons in central $d$$+$Au collisions, and observe a mass-ordering pattern similar to that seen in heavy ion collisions. These results are compared with viscous hydrodynamic calculations and measurements from $p$$+$Pb at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV. The magnitude of the mass-ordering in $d$$+$Au is found to be smaller than that in $p$$+$Pb collisions, which may indicate smaller radial flow in lower energy $d$$+$Au collisions.

They also indicate a linear dependence of R$_{\rm side}$ on the initial transverse geometric size $\bar{R}$, as well as a smaller freeze-out size for the $d$$+$Au system. These patterns point to the important role of final-state rescattering effects in the reaction dynamics of $d$$+$Au collisions.

Results are presented from data recorded in 2009 by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider for the double-longitudinal spin asymmetry, $A_{LL}$, for $π^0$ and $η$ production in $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions. Comparison of the $π^0$ results with different theory expectations based on fits of other published data showed a preference for small positive values of gluon polarization, $ΔG$, in the proton in the probed Bjorken $x$ range. The effect of adding the new 2009 \pz data to a recent global analysis of polarized scattering data is also shown, resulting in a best fit value $ΔG^{[0.05,0.2]}_{\mbox{DSSV}} = 0.06^{+0.11}_{-0.15}$ in the range $0.05<x<0.2$, with the uncertainty at $Δχ^2 = 9$ when considering only statistical experimental uncertainties. Shifting the PHENIX data points by their systematic uncertainty leads to a variation of the best-fit value of $ΔG^{[0.05,0.2]}_{\mbox{DSSV}}$ between $0.02$ and $0.12$, demonstrating the need for full treatment of the experimental systematic uncertainties in future global analyses.

Charged-pion-interferometry measurements were made with respect to the 2$^{\rm nd}$- and 3$^{\rm rd}$-order event plane for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. A strong azimuthal-angle dependence of the extracted Gaussian-source radii was observed with respect to both the 2$^{\rm nd}$- and 3$^{\rm rd}$-order event planes. The results for the 2$^{\rm nd}$-order dependence indicate that the initial eccentricity is reduced during the medium evolution, but not reversed in the final state, which is consistent with previous results. In contrast, the results for the 3$^{\rm rd}$-order dependence indicate that the initial triangular shape is significantly reduced and potentially reversed by the end of the medium evolution, and that the 3$^{\rm rd}$-order oscillations are largely dominated by the dynamical effects from triangular flow.

Measurements of transverse-single-spin asymmetries ($A_{N}$) in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$62.4 and 200 GeV with the PHENIX detector at RHIC are presented. At midrapidity, $A_{N}$ is measured for neutral pion and eta mesons reconstructed from diphoton decay, and at forward rapidities, neutral pions are measured using both diphotons and electromagnetic clusters. The neutral-pion measurement of $A_{N}$ at midrapidity is consistent with zero with uncertainties a factor of 20 smaller than previous publications, which will lead to improved constraints on the gluon Sivers function. At higher rapidities, where the valence quark distributions are probed, the data exhibit sizable asymmetries. In comparison with previous measurements in this kinematic region, the new data extend the kinematic coverage in $\sqrt{s}$ and $p_T$, and it is found that the asymmetries depend only weakly on $\sqrt{s}$. The origin of the forward $A_{N}$ is presently not understood quantitatively. The extended reach to higher $p_T$ probes the transition between transverse momentum dependent effects at low $p_T$ and multi-parton dynamics at high $p_T$.

Comparing the $p$$+$$p$ results with several different models, we find the results are consistent with a total charm cross section $σ_{c\bar{c}} =$ 538 $\pm$ 46 (stat) $\pm$ 197 (data syst) $\pm$ 174 (model syst) $μ$b. These generators also indicate that the back-to-back peak at $Δφ= π$ is dominantly from the leading order contributions (gluon fusion), while higher order processes (flavor excitation and gluon splitting) contribute to the yield at all $Δφ$. We observe a suppression in the pair yield per collision in $d$+Au. We find the pair yield suppression factor for $2.7<Δφ<3.2$ rad is $J_{dA}$ = 0.433 $\pm$ 0.087 (stat) $\pm$ 0.135 (syst), indicating cold nuclear matter modification of $c\bar{c}$ pairs.

High-energy proton- and deuteron-nucleus collisions provide an excellent tool for studying a wide array of physics effects, including modifications of parton distribution functions in nuclei, gluon saturation, and color neutralization and hadronization in a nuclear environment, among others. All of these effects are expected to have a significant dependence on the size of the nuclear target and the impact parameter of the collision, also known as the collision centrality. In this article, we detail a method for determining centrality classes in p(d)+A collisions via cuts on the multiplicity at backward rapidity (i.e., the nucleus-going direction) and for determining systematic uncertainties in this procedure. For d+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV we find that the connection to geometry is confirmed by measuring the fraction of events in which a neutron from the deuteron does not interact with the nucleus. As an application, we consider the nuclear modification factors R_{p(d)+A}, for which there is a potential bias in the measured centrality dependent yields due to auto-correlations between the process of interest and the backward rapidity multiplicity. We determine the bias correction factor within this framework. This method is further tested using the HIJING Monte Carlo generator. We find that for d+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV, these bias corrections are small and vary by less than 5% (10%) up to p_T = 10 (20) GeV. In contrast, for p+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 5.02 TeV we find these bias factors are an order of magnitude larger and strongly p_T dependent, likely due to the larger effect of multi-parton interactions.

The PHENIX experiment has measured open heavy-flavor production via semileptonic decay muons over the transverse momentum range 1 < pT < 6 GeV/c at forward and backward rapidity (1.4 < |y| < 2.0) in d+Au and p+p collisions at ?sNN = 200 GeV. In central d+Au collisions an enhancement (suppression) of heavy-flavor muon production is observed at backward (forward) rapidity relative to the yield in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. Modification of the gluon density distribution in the Au nucleus contributes in terms of anti-shadowing enhancement and shadowing suppression; however, the enhancement seen at backward rapidity exceeds expectations from this effect alone. These results, implying an important role for additional cold nuclear matter effects, serves as a key baseline for heavy-quark measurements in A+A collisions and in constraining the magnitude of charmonia breakup effects at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider.

The extracted v_2 coefficients are found to be consistent between the two meson species over the measured p_T range. The ratio of v_4/v_2^2 for pi^0 mesons is found to be independent of p_T for 1-9 GeV/c, implying a lack of sensitivity of the ratio to the change of underlying physics with p_T. Furthermore, the ratio of v_4/v_2^2 is systematically larger in central collisions, which may reflect the combined effects of fluctuations in the initial collision geometry and finite viscosity in the evolving medium.

We find that the modification of the psi^prime yield relative to that of the J/psi scales approximately with charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity across p+A, d+Au, and A+A results from the Super Proton Synchrotron and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In large impact-parameter collisions we observe a similar suppression for the psi^prime and J/psi, while in small impact-parameter collisions the more weakly bound psi^prime is more strongly suppressed. Owing to the short time spent traversing the Au nucleus, the larger psi^prime suppression in central events is not explained by an increase of the nuclear absorption due to meson formation time effects.

The measurements of pions and protons are reported up to p_T=6 GeV/c (5 GeV/c), and the measurements of kaons are reported up to p_T=4 GeV/c (3.5 GeV/c) in Au+Au (d+Au) collisions. In the intermediate p_T region, between 2--5 GeV/c, a significant enhancement of baryon to meson ratios compared to those measured in p+p collisions is observed. This enhancement is present in both Au+Au and d+Au collisions, and increases as the collisions become more central. We compare a class of peripheral Au+Au collisions with a class of central d+Au collisions which have a comparable number of participating nucleons and binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The p_T dependent particle ratios for these classes display a remarkable similarity, which is then discussed.
