The nitrogen isotope ratio 14N/15N is a powerful tool to trace Galactic stellar nucleosynthesis and constraining Galactic chemical evolution. Previous observations have found lower 14N/15N ratios in the Galactic center and higher values in the Galactic disk. This is consistent with the inside-out formation scenario of our Milky Way. However, previous studies mostly utilized double isotope ratios also including 12C/13C, which introduces additional uncertainties. Here we therefore present observations of C14N and its rare isotopologue, C15N, toward a sample of star forming regions, measured by the IRAM 30 m and/or the ARO 12 m telescope at $λ$ ~3 mm wavelength. For those 35 sources detected in both isotopologues, physical parameters are determined. Furthermore we have obtained nitrogen isotope ratios using the strongest hyperfine components of CN and C15N. For those sources showing small deviations from Local Thermodynamical Equilibrium and/or self-absorption, the weakest hyperfine component, likely free of the latter effect, was used to obtain reliable 14N/15N values. Our measured 14N/15N isotope ratios from C14N and C15N measurements are compatible with those from our earlier measurements of NH3 and 15NH3 (Paper I), i.e., increasing ratios to a Galacticentric distance of ~9 kpc. The unweighted second order polynomial fit yields $\frac{{\rm C^{14}N}}{{\rm C^{15}N}} = (-4.85 \pm 1.89)\;{\rm kpc^{-2}} \times R_{\rm GC}^{2} + (82.11 \pm 31.93) \;{\rm kpc^{-1}} \times R_{\rm GC} - (28.12 \pm 126.62)$. Toward the outer galaxy, the isotope ratio tends to decrease, supporting an earlier finding by H13CN/HC15N. Galactic chemical evolution models are consistent with our measurements of the 14N/15N isotope ratio, i.e. a rising trend from the Galactic center region to approximately 9 kpc, followed by a decreasing trend with increasing $R_{\rm GC}$ toward the outer Galaxy.

There is a novel concept that detecting $χ$ from evaporating primordial black holes (PBHs). We search for $χ$ emitted from PBHs by investigating their interaction with target electrons. The examined PBH masses range from 1$\times$10$^{15}$ to 7$\times$10$^{16}$ g under the current limits of PBH abundance $f_{PBH}$. Using 205.4 kg$\cdot$day data obtained from the CDEX-10 experiment conducted in the China **** Underground Laboratory, we exclude the $χ$--electron ($χ$--$e$) elastic-scattering cross section $σ_{χe} \sim 5\times10^{-29}$ cm$^2$ for $χ$ with a mass $m_χ\lesssim$ 0.1 keV from our results. If ($m_χ$, $σ_{χe}$) can be determined in the future, DD experiments are expected to impose strong constraints on $f_{PBH}$ for large $M_{PBH}$s.

Binary semantic segmentation in computer vision is a fundamental problem. As a model-based segmentation method, the graph-cut approach was one of the most successful binary segmentation methods thanks to its global optimality guarantee of the solutions and its practical polynomial-time complexity. Recently, many deep learning (DL) based methods have been developed for this task and yielded remarkable performance, resulting in a paradigm shift in this field. To combine the strengths of both approaches, we propose in this study to integrate the graph-cut approach into a deep learning network for end-to-end learning. Unfortunately, backward propagation through the graph-cut module in the DL network is challenging due to the combinatorial nature of the graph-cut algorithm. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel residual graph-cut loss and a quasi-residual connection, enabling the backward propagation of the gradients of the residual graph-cut loss for effective feature learning guided by the graph-cut segmentation model. In the inference phase, globally optimal segmentation is achieved with respect to the graph-cut energy defined on the optimized image features learned from DL networks. Experiments on the public AZH chronic wound data set and the pancreas cancer data set from the medical segmentation decathlon (MSD) demonstrated promising segmentation accuracy, and improved robustness against adversarial attacks.

To investigate the relative amount of ejecta from high-mass versus intermediate-mass stars and to trace the chemical evolution of the Galaxy, we have performed with the IRAM 30m and the SMT 10m telescopes a systematic study of Galactic interstellar 18O/17O ratios toward a sample of 421 molecular clouds, covering a galactocentric distance range of 1-22 kpc. The results presented in this paper are based on the J=2-1 transition and encompass 364 sources showing both C18O and C17O detections. The previously suggested 18O/17O gradient is confirmed. For the 41 sources detected with both facilities, good agreement is obtained. A correlation of 18O/17O ratios with heliocentric distance is not found, indicating that beam dilution and linear beam sizes are not relevant. For the subsample of IRAM 30 m high-mass star-forming regions with accurate parallax distances, an unweighted fit gives 18O/17O = (0.12+-0.02)R_GC+(2.38+-0.13) with a correlation coefficient of R = 0.67. While the slope is consistent with our J=1-0 measurement, ratios are systematically lower. This should be caused by larger optical depths of C18O 2-1 lines, w.r.t the corresponding 1-0 transitions, which is supported by RADEX calculations and the fact that C18O/C17O is positively correlated with 13CO/C18O. After considering optical depth effects with C18O J=2-1 reaching typically an optical depth of 0.5, corrected 18O/17O ratios from the J=1-0 and J=2-1 lines become consistent. A good numerical fit to the data is provided by the MWG-12 model, including both rotating stars and novae.

Recently a dark matter-electron (DM-electron) paradigm has drawn much attention. Models beyond the standard halo model describing DM accelerated by high energy celestial bodies are under intense examination as well. In this Letter, a velocity components analysis (VCA) method dedicated to swift analysis of accelerated DM-electron interactions via semiconductor detectors is proposed and the first HPGe detector-based accelerated DM-electron analysis is realized. Utilizing the method, the first germanium based constraint on sub-GeV solar reflected DM-electron interaction is presented with the 205.4 kg$\cdot$day dataset from the CDEX-10 experiment. In the heavy mediator scenario, our result excels in the mass range of 5$-$15 keV/$c^2$, achieving a 3 orders of magnitude improvement comparing with previous semiconductor experiments. In the light mediator scenario, the strongest laboratory constraint for DM lighter than 0.1 MeV/$c^2$ is presented. The result proves the feasibility and demonstrates the vast potential of the VCA technique in future accelerated DM-electron analyses with semiconductor detectors.

This paper develops novel conformal prediction methods for classification tasks that can automatically adapt to random label contamination in the calibration sample, leading to more informative prediction sets with stronger coverage guarantees compared to state-of-the-art approaches. This is made possible by a precise characterization of the effective coverage inflation (or deflation) suffered by standard conformal inferences in the presence of label contamination, which is then made actionable through new calibration algorithms. Our solution is flexible and can leverage different modeling assumptions about the label contamination process, while requiring no knowledge of the underlying data distribution or of the inner workings of the machine-learning classifier. The advantages of the proposed methods are demonstrated through extensive simulations and an application to object classification with the CIFAR-10H image data set.

This paper comprises a thorough summary of the CDEX-50 experiment, including an investigation of potential background sources and the development of a background model. Based on the baseline model, the projected sensitivity of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) is also presented. The expected background level within the energy region of interest, set to 2--2.5 keVee, is $\sim$0.01 counts keVee$^{-1}$ kg$^{-1}$ day$^{-1}$. At 90\% confidence level, the expected sensitivity to spin-independent WIMP-nucleon couplings is estimated to reach a cross-section of 5.3 $\times$ 10$^{-45}$ cm$^{2}$ for a WIMP mass of 5 GeV/c$^{2}$ with an exposure objective of 150 kg$\cdot$year and an analysis threshold of 160 eVee. This science goal will correspond to the most sensitive results for WIMPs with a mass of 2.2--8 GeV/c$^{2}$.

Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) is a measure of the magnitude of diffusion of water molecules within tissues. We argue that ADC value contains information of both diffusion and T2 relaxation. In this letter, we list literature evidence to support our argument. Firstly, we list uterine myometrium tumors as examples. Myometrium has a T2 relaxation time of 79 ms at 3T. Literature shows, when the myometrium tumors are T2 weighted signal intensity hypertensive (relative to myometrium), these tumors likely show diffusion restriction. This is similar to that, while the spleen is T2 weighted signal intensity hypertensive relative to the liver, the spleen demonstrates diffusion restriction relative to the liver. On the other hand, when the myometrium tumors are T2 weighted signal intensity hypotensive (relative to myometrium), these tumors likely do not show diffusion restriction. However, when the myometrium tumors are very highly hypertensive such as the cases of leiomyoma cystic degeneration and myxoid degeneration, the relationship between T2 weighted signal intensity and diffusion is similar to that of a normal gallbladder, i.e., T2 weighted signal highly hypertensive without diffusion restriction. For most of the tumors, much longer T2 may suggest a tumor is waterier. On b=0 images, the signal of tumor (relative to other tissues) can be dominated by T2 effect. On a high b-value images such as b=1000 images, it is possible that tumor regions are dominated by noises. In the end, the ADCs, which are determined by the slope between the signal at b=0 and the signal at b=1000, are also dominated by the T2 effect, with longer T2 being associated with higher ADC measure. In fact, since there is no diffusion gradient with b=0 images, and there are only noises on b=1000 (or b=800), ADC map is devoid of diffusion information.

Considering liver as the reference, that both fast diffusion (PF) and slow diffusion (Dslow) of the spleen are much underestimated is likely due to the MRI properties of the spleen such as the much longer T2 relaxation time. It is possible that longer T2 relaxation time partially mitigates the signal decay effect of various gradients on diffusion weighted image. This phenomenon will not be limited to the spleen. Most liver tumors have a longer T2 relaxation time than their native normal tissue and this is considered to be associated with oedema. On the other hand, most tumors are measured with lower MRI diffusion (despite being oedematous). The reason why malignant tumors have lower diffusion value [apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and Dslow] are poorly understood but has been proposed to be related to a combination of higher cellularity, tissue disorganization, and increased extracellular space tortuosity. These explanations may be true, but it is also possible to that many tumors have MRI properties similar to the spleen such as longer T2 (relative to the liver) and these MRI properties may also contribute to the lower MRI measured ADC and Dslow . In other words, if we could hypothetically plant a piece of spleen tissue in the liver, MRI would recognize this planted spleen tissue as being similar to a tumor and measure it to have lower diffusion than the liver.

The N2H+ J = 1-0 line is detected in 60 sources and HC3N is detected in 59 sources, including 40 sources with three lines, 9 sources with two lines, and 10 sources with one line. Using the rotational diagram, the rotational temperature and column density of HC3N were estimated toward sources with at least two HC3N lines. For 10 sources with only one HC3N line, their parameters were estimated, taking one average value of Trot. For N2H+, we estimated the optical depth of the N2H+ J = 1-0 line, based on the line intensity ratio of its hyperfine structure lines. Then the excitation temperature and column density were calculated. When combining our results in UC H II regions and previous observation results on high-mass starless cores and high-mass protostellar cores, the N(HC3N)/N(N2H+) ratio clearly increases from the region stage. This means that the abundance ratio changes with the evolution of high-mass star-forming regions (HMSFRs). Moreover, positive correlations between the ratio and other evolutionary indicators (dust temperature, bolometric luminosity, and luminosity-to-mass ratio) are found. Thus we propose the ratio of N(HC3N)/N(N2H+) as a reliable chemical clock of HMSFRs.

Abstract:
With the IRAM 30 meter telescope, we performed observations of the $J$ = 2-1 transitions of CS, C$^{33}$S, C$^{34}$S, C$^{36}$S, $^{13}$CS, $^{13}$C$^{33}$S, and $^{13}$C$^{34}$S as well as the $J$ = 3-2 transitions of C$^{33}$S, C$^{34}$S, C$^{36}$S, and $^{13}$CS toward a large sample of 110 HMSFRs. We measured the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C, $^{32}$S/$^{34}$S, $^{32}$S/$^{33}$S, $^{32}$S/$^{36}$S,…

We measured the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C, $^{32}$S/$^{34}$S, $^{32}$S/$^{33}$S, $^{32}$S/$^{36}$S, $^{34}$S/$^{33}$S, $^{34}$S/$^{36}$S, and $^{33}$S/$^{36}$S abundance ratios with rare isotopologs of CS, thus avoiding significant saturation effects. With accurate distances obtained from parallax data, we confirm previously identified $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C and $^{32}$S/$^{34}$S gradients as a function of galactocentric distance (RGC). In the CMZ, $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratios are higher than suggested by a linear fit to the disk values as a function of RGC. While $^{32}$S/$^{34}$S ratios near the Galactic center and in the inner disk are similar, this is not the case for $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C, when comparing central values with those near RGC of 5 kpc. As was already known, there is no $^{34}$S/$^{33}$S gradient but the average ratio of 4.35~$\pm$~0.44 derived from the $J$ = 2-1 transition lines of C$^{34}$S and C$^{33}$S is well below previously reported values. A comparison between solar and local interstellar $^{32}$S/$^{34}$S and $^{34}$S/$^{33}$S ratios suggests that the Solar System may have been formed from gas with a particularly high $^{34}$S abundance. For the first time, we report positive gradients of $^{32}$S/$^{33}$S, $^{34}$S/$^{36}$S, $^{33}$S/$^{36}$S, and $^{32}{\rm S}/^{36}{\rm S}$ in our Galaxy. The predicted $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratios from the latest GCE models are in good agreement with our results. While $^{32}$S/$^{34}$S and $^{32}$S/$^{36}$S ratios show larger differences at larger RGC, $^{32}$S/$^{33}$S ratios show an offset across the entire inner 12 kpc of the Milky Way.

We present novel constraints on boosted light dark matter particles (denoted as ``$χ$'') from evaporating primordial black holes (PBHs) using 205.4 kg$\cdot$day data from the China **** Underground Laboratory's CDEX-10 p-type point contact germanium detector with a 160 eVee analysis threshold. $χ$ from PBHs with masses ranging from 1$\times$10$^{15}$ g to 7$\times$10$^{16}$ g are searched in this work. In the presence of PBH abundance compatible with present bounds, our result excludes the $χ$-nucleon elastic-scattering cross section region from 3.4$\times$10$^{-32}$ cm$^{2}$ to 2.3$\times$10$^{-29}$ cm$^{2}$ for $χ$ of 1 keV to 24 MeV from PBHs with masses of 5$\times$10$^{15}$ g, as well as from 1.1$\times$10$^{-28}$ cm$^{2}$ to 7.6$\times$10$^{-28}$ cm$^{2}$ for $χ$ of 1 keV to 0.6 MeV from PBHs with masses of 7$\times$10$^{16}$ g. If the $χ$-nucleon elastic-scattering cross section can be determined in the future, the abundance of PBHs may be severely constrained by $χ$ evaporation. With the lower threshold (160 eVee) of the CDEX-10 experiment compared to the previously used experiments, this work allows for a better reach at soft spectra produced by heavier PBHs, which demonstrates the vast potential of such a technical route to pursue $χ$ from larger PBHs with a low threshold.

COVID-19 has a spectrum of disease severity, ranging from asymptomatic to requiring hospitalization. Understanding the mechanisms driving disease severity is crucial for develo** effective treatments and reducing mortality rates. One way to gain such understanding is using a multi-class classification framework, in which patients' biological features are used to predict patients' severity classes. In this severity classification problem, it is beneficial to prioritize the identification of more severe classes and control the "under-classification" errors, in which patients are misclassified into less severe categories. The Neyman-Pearson (NP) classification paradigm has been developed to prioritize the designated type of error. However, current NP procedures are either for binary classification or do not provide high probability controls on the prioritized errors in multi-class classification. Here, we propose a hierarchical NP (H-NP) framework and an umbrella algorithm that generally adapts to popular classification methods and controls the under-classification errors with high probability. On an integrated collection of single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) datasets for 864 patients, we explore ways of featurization and demonstrate the efficacy of the H-NP algorithm in controlling the under-classification errors regardless of featurization. Beyond COVID-19 severity classification, the H-NP algorithm generally applies to multi-class classification problems, where classes have a priority order.

We investigate exotic neutrino interactions using the 205.4 kg$\cdot$day dataset from the CDEX-10 experiment at the China **** Underground Laboratory. New constraints on the mass and couplings of new gauge bosons are presented. Two nonstandard neutrino interactions are considered: a $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge-boson-induced interaction between an active neutrino and electron/nucleus, and a dark-photon-induced interaction between a sterile neutrino and electron/nucleus via kinetic mixing with a photon. This work probes an unexplored parameter space involving sterile neutrino coupling with a dark photon. New laboratory limits are derived on dark photon masses below $1~{\rm eV}/c^{2}$ at some benchmark values of $Δm_{41}^{2}$ and $g^{\prime2}{\rm{sin}}^{2}2θ_{14}$.

New low-mass dark matter searching channels, neutral current fermionic DM absorption ($χ+A\rightarrow ν+A$) and DM-nucleus 3$\rightarrow$2 scattering ($χ+χ+A\rightarrow φ+A$), have been analyzed with an energy threshold of 160 eVee. No significant signal was found. Thus new limits on the DM-nucleon interaction cross section are set for both models at sub-GeV DM mass region. A cross section limit for the fermionic DM absorption is set to be $\rm 2.5\times 10^{-46} cm^2$(90\% C.L.) at DM mass of 10 MeV/c$^2$. For the DM-nucleus 3$\rightarrow$2 scattering scenario, limits are extended to DM mass of 5 MeV/c$^2$ and 14 MeV/c$^2$ for the massless dark photon and bound DM final state, respectively.

Our aim is to measure the interstellar 14N/15N ratio across the Galaxy, to establish a standard data set on interstellar ammonia isotope ratios, and to provide new constraints on the Galactic chemical evolution. The (J, K ) = (1, 1), (2, 2), and (3, 3) lines of 14NH3 and 15NH3 were observed with the Shanghai Tianma 65 m radio telescope (TMRT) and the Effelsberg 100 m telescope toward a large sample of 210 sources. One hundred fourty-one of these sources were detected by the TMRT in 14NH3. Eight of them were also detected in 15NH3. For 10 of the 36 sources with strong NH3 emission, the Effelsberg 100 m telescope successfully detected their 15NH3(1, 1) lines, including 3 sources (G081.7522, W51D, and Orion-KL) with detections by the TMRT telescope. Thus, a total of 15 sources are detected in both the 14NH3 and 15NH3 lines. Line and physical parameters for these 15 sources are derived, including optical depths, rotation and kinetic temperatures, and total column densities. 14N/15N isotope ratios were determined from the 14NH3/15NH3 abundance ratios. The isotope ratios obtained from both telescopes agree for a given source within the uncertainties, and no dependence on heliocentric distance and kinetic temperature is seen. 14N/15N ratios tend to increase with galactocentric distance, confirming a radial nitrogen isotope gradient. This is consistent with results from recent Galactic chemical model calculations, including the impact of superasymptotic giant branch stars and novae.

We present improved germanium-based constraints on sub-GeV dark matter via dark matter--electron ($χ$-$e$) scattering using the 205.4 kg$\cdot$day dataset from the CDEX-10 experiment. Using a novel calculation technique, we attain predicted $χ$-$e$ scattering spectra observable in high-purity germanium detectors. In the heavy mediator scenario, our results achieve 3 orders of magnitude of improvement for $m_χ$ larger than 80 MeV/c$^2$ compared to previous germanium-based $χ$-$e$ results. We also present the most stringent $χ$-$e$ cross-section limit to date among experiments using solid-state detectors for $m_χ$ larger than 90 MeV/c$^2$ with heavy mediators and $m_χ$ larger than 100 MeV/c$^2$ with electric dipole coupling. The result proves the feasibility and demonstrates the vast potential of a new $χ$-$e$ detection method with high-purity germanium detectors in ultralow radioactive background.

A natural broad energy germanium (BEGe) detector is operated in the China **** Underground Laboratory (CJPL) for a feasibility study of building the next generation experiment of the neutrinoless double-beta (0{$νββ$}) decay of $^{76}$Ge. The setup of the prototype facility, characteristics of the BEGe detector, background reduction methods, and data analysis are described in this paper. A background index of 6.4$\times$10$^{-3}$ counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$day) is achieved and 1.86 times lower than our previous result of the CDEX-1 detector. No signal is observed with an exposure of 186.4 kg$\cdot$day, thus a limit on the half life of $^{76}$Ge 0$νββ$ decay is set at T$_{1/2}^{0ν}$ $>$ 5.62$\times$10$^{22}$ yr at 90% C.L.. The limit corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass in the range of 4.6 $\sim$ 10.3 eV, dependent on the nuclear matrix elements.

We carried out a cyanopolyyne line survey towards a large sample of HMSFRs using the Shanghai Tian Ma 65m Radio Telescope (TMRT). Our sample consisted of 123 targets taken from the TMRT C band line survey. It included three kinds of sources, namely those with detection of the 6.7 GHz CH3OH maser alone, with detection of the radio recombination line (RRL) alone, and with detection of both (hereafter referred to as Maser-only, RRL-only, and Maser-RRL sources, respectively). We detected HC3N in 38 sources, HC5N in 11 sources, and HC7N in G24.790+0.084, with the highest detection rate being found for Maser-RRL sources and a very low detection rate found for RRL-only sources. Their column densities were derived using the rotational temperature measured from the NH3 lines. And we constructed and fitted the far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distributions. Based on these, we derive their dust temperatures, H2 column densities, and abundances of cyanopolyynes relative to H2. The detection rate, the column density, and the relative abundance of HC3N increase from Maser-only to Maser-RRL sources and decrease from Maser-RRL to RRL-only sources. This trend is consistent with the proposed evolutionary trend of HC3N under the assumption that our Maser-only, Maser-RRL, and RRL-only sources correspond to massive young stellar objects, ultra-compact HII regions, and normal classical HII regions, respectively. Furthermore, a statistical analysis of the integrated line intensity and column density of HC3N and shock-tracing molecules (SiO, H2CO) enabled us to find positive correlations between them. This suggests that HC3N may be another tracer of shocks, and should therefore be the subject of further observations and corresponding chemical simulations. Our results indirectly support the idea that the neutral--neutral reaction between C2H2 and CN is the dominant formation pathway of HC3N.

Solid usually becomes harder and tougher under compression, and turns softer at elevated temperature. Recently, compression-induced softening and heating-induced hardening (CISHIH) dual anomaly was predicted in group VB elements such as vanadium. Here, the evidence for this counterintuitive phenomenon is reported. By using accurate high-temperature high-pressure sound velocities measured at Hugoniot states generated by shock-waves, together with first-principles calculations, we observe not only the prominent compression-induced sound velocity reduction, but also strong heating-induced sound velocity enhancement, in shocked vanadium. The former corresponds to the softening in shear modulus by compression, whereas the latter reflects the reverse hardening by heat. These experiments also unveil another anomaly in Young's modulus that wasn't reported before. Based on the experimental and theoretical data, we infer that vanadium might transition from BCC into two different rhombohedral (RH1 and RH2) phases at about 79GPa and 116GPa along the Hugoniot, respectively, which implies a dramatic difference in static and dynamic loading, as well as the significance of deviatoric stress and rate-relevant effects in high-pressure phase transition dynamics.

One month after launching Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM), a bright thermonuclear X-ray burst from 4U~0614+09, was observed on January 24, 2021. We report the time-resolved spectroscopy of the burst and a burst oscillation detection at 413 Hz with a fractional amplitude 3.4\% (rms). This coincides with the burst oscillation previously discovered with \textit{Swift}/BAT \citep{Strohmayer2008}, and therefore confirms the spin frequency of this source. This burst is the brightest one in the normal bursts (except the superburst) ever detected from 4U~0614+09, which leads to an upper limit of distance estimation as 3.1 kpc. The folded light curve during the burst oscillation shows a multi-peak structure, which is the first case observed during a single burst oscillation in nonpulsating sources. The multi-peak profile could be due to additional harmonics of the burst oscillation, which is corresponding to several brighter/fainter spots at the stellar surface.

We analyzed and simulated the Earth shielding effect for dark matter at the China **** Underground Laboratory (CJPL) with a simulation package, CJPL Earth Shielding Simulation code (CJPL\_ESS), which is applicable to other underground locations. The further constraints on the $χ$-N cross section exclusion regions are derived based on the studies with CDEX experiment data.

Recently, transition-metal-based kagome metals have aroused much research interest as a novel platform to explore exotic topological quantum phenomena. Here we report on the synthesis, structure, and physical properties of a bilayer kagome lattice compound V3Sb2. The polycrystalline V3Sb2 samples were synthesized by conventional solid-state-reaction method in a sealed quartz tube at temperatures below 850 Celsius degree. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and resistivity revealed consistently a density-wave-like transition at Tdw ~ 160 K with a large thermal hysteresis, even though some sample-dependent behaviors are observed presumably due to the different preparation conditions. Upon cooling through Tdw, no strong anomaly in lattice parameters and no indication of symmetry lowering were detected in powder x-ray diffraction measurements. This transition can be suppressed completely by applying hydrostatic pressures of about 1.8 GPa, around which no sign of superconductivity is observed down to 1.5 K. Specific-heat measurements reveal a relatively large Sommerfeld coefficient γ = 18.5 mJ/mol-K2, confirming the metallic ground state with moderate electronic correlations. Density functional theory calculations indicate that V3Sb2 shows a non-trivial topological crystalline property. Thus, our study makes V3Sb2 a new candidate of metallic kagome compound to study the interplay between density-wave-order, nontrivial band topology, and possible superconductivity.

The increasing availability of curated citation data provides a wealth of resources for analyzing and understanding the intellectual influence of scientific publications. In the field of statistics, current studies of citation data have mostly focused on the interactions between statistical journals and papers, limiting the measure of influence to mainly within statistics itself. In this paper, we take the first step towards understanding the impact statistics has made on other scientific fields in the era of Big Data. By collecting comprehensive bibliometric data from the Web of Science database for selected statistical journals, we investigate the citation trends and compositions of citing fields over time to show that their diversity has been increasing. Furthermore, we use the local clustering technique involving personalized PageRank with conductance for size selection to find the most relevant statistical research area for a given external topic of interest. We provide theoretical guarantees for the procedure and, through a number of case studies, show the results from our citation data align well with our knowledge and intuition about these external topics. Overall, we have found that the statistical theory and methods recently invented by the statistics community have made increasing impact on other scientific fields.

Nanoscopic diffusion at surfaces normally takes place when an adsorbate jumps from one adsorption site to the other. Jump diffusion can be measured via quasi-elastic scattering experiments, and the results can often be interpreted in terms of analytic models. While the simplest model of jump diffusion only accounts for intercell jumps between nearest neighbours, recent works have highlighted that models which take into account both intracell and long-range intercell jumps are much needed. Here, we describe a program to compute the analytic lineshape expected from quasielastic scattering experiments, for translational jump diffusion on user-defined lattices. We provide an example of a general hexagonal surface composed of six sublattices, corresponding to the six principle adsorption sites - namely the top, two hollow, and three bridge sites. In that example we include only nearest-neighbour jumps. In addition, we provide a mean to calculate the lineshape for jumps on a hexagonal honeycomb lattice, with jumps up to the 10th nearest neighbour taken into consideration.

In statistical network analysis, we often assume either the full network is available or multiple subgraphs can be sampled to estimate various global properties of the network. However, in a real social network, people frequently make decisions based on their local view of the network alone. Here, we consider a partial information framework that characterizes the local network centered at a given individual by path length $L$ and gives rise to a partial adjacency matrix. Under $L=2$, we focus on the problem of (global) community detection using the popular stochastic block model (SBM) and its degree-corrected variant (DCSBM). We derive theoretical properties of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors from the signal term of the partial adjacency matrix and propose new spectral-based community detection algorithms that achieve consistency under appropriate conditions. Our analysis also allows us to propose a new centrality measure that assesses the importance of an individual's partial information in determining global community structure. Using simulated and real networks, we demonstrate the performance of our algorithms and compare our centrality measure with other popular alternatives to show it captures unique nodal information. Our results illustrate that the partial information framework enables us to compare the viewpoints of different individuals regarding the global structure.

We present observations of $^{12}$C$^{32}$S, $^{12}$C$^{34}$S, $^{13}$C$^{32}$S and $^{12}$C$^{33}$S J=2$-$1 lines toward a large sample of massive star forming regions by using the Arizona Radio Observatory 12-m telescope and the IRAM\,30-m. Taking new measurements of the carbon $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratio, the $^{32}$S$/$$^{34}$S isotope ratio was determined from the integrated $^{13}$C$^{32}$S/$^{12}$C$^{34}$S line intensity ratios for our sample. Our analysis shows a $^{32}$S$/$$^{34}$S gradient from the inner Galaxy out to a galactocentric distance of 12\,kpc. An unweighted least-squares fit to our data yields $^{32}$S$/$$^{34}$S = (1.56 $\pm$ 0.17)$\rm D_{\rm GC}$ + (6.75 $\pm$ 1.22) with a correlation coefficient of 0.77. Errors represent 1$σ$ standard deviations. Testing this result by (a) excluding the Galactic center region, (b) excluding all sources with C$^{34}$S opacities $>$ 0.25, (c) combining our data and old data from previous study, and (d) using different sets of carbon isotope ratios leads to the conclusion that the observed $^{32}$S$/$$^{34}$S gradient is not an artefact but persists irrespective of the choice of the sample and carbon isotope data. A gradient with rising $^{32}$S$/$$^{34}$S values as a function of galactocentric radius implies that the solar system ratio should be larger than that of the local interstellar medium. With the new carbon isotope ratios we obtain indeed a local $^{32}$S$/$$^{34}$S isotope ratio about 10$\%$ below the solar system one, as expected in case of decreasing $^{32}$S$/$$^{34}$S ratios with time and increased amounts of stellar processing. However, taking older carbon isotope ratios based on a lesser amount of data, such a decrease is not seen. No systematic variation of $^{34}$S$/$$^{33}$S ratios along galactocentric distance was found.

We present weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) search results performed using two approaches of effective field theory from the China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX), based on the data from both CDEX-1B and CDEX-10 stages. In the nonrelativistic effective field theory approach, both time-integrated and annual modulation analyses were used to set new limits for the coupling of WIMP-nucleon effective operators at 90% confidence level (C.L.) and improve over the current bounds in the low $m_χ$ region. In the chiral effective field theory approach, data from CDEX-10 were used to set an upper limit on WIMP-pion coupling at 90% C.L. We for the first time extended the limit to the $m_χ<$ 6 GeV/$c^2$ region.

The interstellar oxygen isotopic ratio of 18O/17O can reflect the relative amount of the secular enrichment by ejecta from high-mass versus intermediate-mass stars. Previous observations found a Galactic gradient of 18O/17O, i.e., low ratios in the Galactic center and large values in the Galactic disk, which supports the insideout formation scenario of our Galaxy. However, the observed objects are not many and, in particular, not so many at large galactocentric distances. Thus we started a systematic study on Galactic interstellar 18O/17O, through observations of C18O and C17O multi-transition lines toward a large sample of 286 sources (at least one order of magnitude larger than previous ones), from the Galactic center region to the far outer Galaxy (~22 kpc). Here we present our observations of J=1-0 lines of C18O and C17O, with the ARO12m and the IRAM 30m telescope. We detected successfully both C18O and C17O 1-0 lines for 34 sources among our IRAM30m sample of 50 targets and for 166 sources among our ARO12m sample of 260 targets. The C18O optical depth effect on our ratio results, evaluated by fitting results of C17O spectra with hyperfine components and our RADEX non-LTE model calculation for the strongest source, was found to be insignificant. Beam dilution does not seem to be a problem either, which was supported by the fact of no systematic variation between the isotopic ratio and the heliocentric distance, and consistent measured ratios from two telescopes for most of those detected sources. Our results, though there are still very few detections made for sources in the outer Galaxy, confirm the apparent 18O/17O gradient of 18O/17O = (0.10+-0.03)R_GC+(2.95+-0.30), with a Pearson's rank correlation coefficient R = 0.69. This is supported by the newest Galactic chemical evolution model including the impact of massive stellar rotators and novae.

It is believed that the density functional theory (DFT) describes most elements with s, p and d orbitals very well, except some materials that having strongly localized and correlated valence electrons. In this work, we find that the widely employed exchange-correlation (xc) functionals, including LDA, GGA and meta-GGA, underestimate the shear modulus and phase stability of V and Nb greatly. The advanced hybrid functional that is usually better for correlated system, on the other hand, completely fails in these two simple metals. This striking failure is revealed due to the orbital localization error in GGA, which is further deteriorated by hybrid functionals. This observation is corroborated by a similar failure of DFT+U and van der Waals functionals when applied to V and Nb. To remedy this problem, an semi-empirical approach of DFT+J is proposed which can delocalize electrons by facilitating the on-site exchange. Furthermore, it is observed that including density derivatives slightly improves the performance of the semi-local functionals, with meta-GGA outperforms GGA, and the latter is better than LDA. This discovery indicates the possibility and necessity to include higher-order density derivatives beyond the Laplacian level for the purpose to remove the orbital localization error (mainly from d orbitals) and delocalization error (mainly from s and p orbitals) completely in V and Nb, so that to achieve a better description of their electronic structures. The same strategy can be applied to other d electron system and f electron system.

The plasma density grating induced by intersecting intense laser pulses can be utilized as an optical compressors, polarizers, waveplates and photonic crystals for the manipulation of ultra-high-power laser pulses. However, the formation and evolution of the plasma density grating are still not fully understood as linear models are adopted to describe them usually. In this paper, two nonlinear theoretical models are presented to study the formation process of the plasma density grating. In the first model, a nonlinear analytical solution based on the fluid equations is presented while in the second model a particle-mesh method is adopted to investigate the kinetic effects. It is found that both models can describe the plasma density grating formation at different stages, well beyond the linear growth stage. More importantly, the second model can reproduce the phenomenon of "ion wave-breaking" of plasma density grating, which eventually induces the saturation of plasma density grating. Using the second model, the saturation time of the plasma density grating is obtained as a function of laser intensity and plasma density, which can be applied to estimate the lifetime of the plasma density grating in experiments. The results from these two nonlinear models are verified using particle-in-cell simulations.

Selecting hyperparameters for unsupervised learning problems is challenging in general due to the lack of ground truth for validation. Despite the prevalence of this issue in statistics and machine learning, especially in clustering problems, there are not many methods for tuning these hyperparameters with theoretical guarantees. In this paper, we provide a framework with provable guarantees for selecting hyperparameters in a number of distinct models. We consider both the subgaussian mixture model and network models to serve as examples of i.i.d. and non-i.i.d. data. We demonstrate that the same framework can be used to choose the Lagrange multipliers of penalty terms in semi-definite programming (SDP) relaxations for community detection, and the bandwidth parameter for constructing kernel similarity matrices for spectral clustering. By incorporating a cross-validation procedure, we show the framework can also do consistent model selection for network models. Using a variety of simulated and real data examples, we show that our framework outperforms other widely used tuning procedures in a broad range of parameter settings.

Traditional MCMC algorithms are computationally intensive and do not scale well to large data. In particular, the Metropolis-Hastings (MH) algorithm requires passing over the entire dataset to evaluate the likelihood ratio in each iteration. We propose a general framework for performing MH-MCMC using mini-batches of the whole dataset and show that this gives rise to approximately a tempered stationary distribution. We prove that the algorithm preserves the modes of the original target distribution and derive an error bound on the approximation with mild assumptions on the likelihood. To further extend the utility of the algorithm to high dimensional settings, we construct a proposal with forward and reverse moves using stochastic gradient and show that the construction leads to reasonable acceptance probabilities. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithm in both low dimensional models and high dimensional neural network applications. Particularly in the latter case, compared to popular optimization methods, our method is more robust to the choice of learning rate and improves testing accuracy.

Mean-field variational inference (MFVI) has been widely applied in large scale Bayesian inference. However MFVI, which assumes a product distribution on the latent variables, often leads to objective functions with many local optima, making optimization algorithms sensitive to initialization. In this paper, we study the advantage of structured variational inference for the two class Stochastic Blockmodel. The variational distribution is constructed to have pairwise dependency structure on the nodes of the network. We prove that, in a broad density regime and for general random initializations, unlike MFVI, the class labels estimated from our method converge to the ground truth with high probability, when the model parameters are known, estimated within a reasonable range or jointly optimized with the variational parameters. In addition, empirically we demonstrate structured VI is more robust compared with MFVI when the graph is sparse and the signal to noise ratio is low. The paper takes a first step towards understanding the importance of dependency structure in variational inference for community detection.

Variational approximation has been widely used in large-scale Bayesian inference recently, the simplest kind of which involves imposing a mean field assumption to approximate complicated latent structures. Despite the computational scalability of mean field, theoretical studies of its loss function surface and the convergence behavior of iterative updates for optimizing the loss are far from complete. In this paper, we focus on the problem of community detection for a simple two-class Stochastic Blockmodel (SBM) with equal class sizes. Using batch co-ordinate ascent (BCAVI) for updates, we show different convergence behavior with respect to different initializations. When the parameters are known or estimated within a reasonable range and held fixed, we characterize conditions under which an initialization can converge to the ground truth. On the other hand, when the parameters need to be estimated iteratively, a random initialization will converge to an uninformative local optimum.

We present observations of the C-band $1_{10}-1_{11}$ (4.8 GHz) and Ku-band $2_{11}-2_{12}$ (14.5 GHz) K-doublet lines of H$_2$CO and the C-band $1_{10}-1_{11}$ (4.6 GHz) line of H$_2$$^{13}$CO toward a large sample of Galactic molecular clouds, through the Shanghai Tianma 65-m radio telescope (TMRT). Our sample with 112 sources includes strong H$_2$CO sources from the TMRT molecular line survey at C-band and other known H$_2$CO sources. All three lines are detected toward 38 objects (43 radial velocity components) yielding a detection rate of 34\%. Complementary observations of their continuum emission at both C- and Ku-bands were performed. Combining spectral line parameters and continuum data, we calculate the column densities, the optical depths and the isotope ratio H$_2$$^{12}$CO/H$_2$$^{13}$CO for each source. To evaluate photon trap** caused by sometimes significant opacities in the main isotopologue's rotational mm-wave lines connecting our measured K-doublets, and to obtain $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C abundance ratios, we used the RADEX non-LTE model accounting for radiative transfer effects. This implied the use of the new collision rates from \citet{Wiesenfeld2013}. Also implementing distance values from trigonometric parallax measurements for our sources, we obtain a linear fit of $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C = (5.08$\pm$1.10)D$_{GC}$ + (11.86$\pm$6.60), with a correlation coefficient of 0.58. D$_{GC}$ refers to Galactocentric distances. Our $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratios agree very well with the ones deduced from CN and C$^{18}$O but are lower than those previously reported on the basis of H$_2$CO, tending to suggest that the bulk of the H$_2$CO in our sources was formed on dust grain mantles and not in the gas phase.

Different from ordinary metals in which only single particle excitations exist, CDW also has collective excitations and can carry electric current in a collective fashion. Manipulating this collective condensation for applications has long been a goal in the condensed matter and materials community. Here we show that the CDW system of 1T-TaS2 is highly sensitive to light directly from visible down to terahertz, with current responsivities around the order of ~1 AW-1 at room temperature. Our findings open a new avenue for realizing uncooled, ultrabroadband and sensitive photoelectronics continuously down to terahertz spectral range.

Niobium does not show any structure transition up to very high pressures. Nonetheless, by using density functional theory, we demonstrate in this work that it exhibits striking softening in elastic moduli C44 and C' at a pressure from 20 to 150 GPa. A novel anomaly softening in C44 from 275 to 400 GPa is also predicted. The physics behind these two anomalies is elaborated by electronic structure calculations, which revealed that they are actually different, with the first one directly relates to an underlying rhombohedral distortion whereas the latter originates in an electronic topological transition. The large magnitude of the softening leads to a remarkable elastic anisotropy in both the shear and the Young's moduli of Nb. Further investigation shows that thermo-electrons have an important role on these anomalies. This effect has not been noticed before. With increased electronic temperature, it is found that all anomalies (both the elastic softening and anisotropy) in Nb are gradually diminished, effectively giving rise to a temperature-induced hardening phenomenon.

Chromosome conformation capture experiments such as Hi-C are used to map the three-dimensional spatial organization of genomes. One specific feature of the 3D organization is known as topologically associating domains (TADs), which are densely interacting, contiguous chromatin regions playing important roles in regulating gene expression. A few algorithms have been proposed to detect TADs. In particular, the structure of Hi-C data naturally inspires application of community detection methods. However, one of the drawbacks of community detection is that most methods take exchangeability of the nodes in the network for granted; whereas the nodes in this case, i.e. the positions on the chromosomes, are not exchangeable. We propose a network model for detecting TADs using Hi-C data that takes into account this non-exchangeability. In addition, our model explicitly makes use of cell-type specific CTCF binding sites as biological covariates and can be used to identify conserved TADs across multiple cell types. The model leads to a likelihood objective that can be efficiently optimized via relaxation. We also prove that when suitably initialized, this model finds the underlying TAD structure with high probability. Using simulated data, we show the advantages of our method and the caveats of popular community detection methods, such as spectral clustering, in this application. Applying our method to real Hi-C data, we demonstrate the domains identified have desirable epigenetic features and compare them across different cell types.

Introduction: This study evaluated algorithm-based qualitative (ABQ) method for vertebral fracture (VF) evaluation with reference to semi-quantitative (SQ) method and bone mineral density (BMD) measurement. Methods: Mr. OS (Hong Kong) and Ms. OS (Hong Kong) represent the first large-scale cohort studies on bone health in elderly Chinese men and women. The current study compared Genant's SQ method and ABQ method in these two cohorts. Based on quantitative measurement, the severity of ABQ method detected fractures was additionally classified into grade-1, grad-2, and grade-3 according to SQ's deformity criteria. The radiographs of 1,954 elderly Chinese men (mean: 72.3 years) and 1,953 elderly Chinese women (mean: 72.5 years) were evaluated. Results: according to ABQ, grade-1,-2,-3 VFs accounted for 1.89%, 1.74%, 2.25% in men, and 3.33%, 3.07%, and 5.53% in women. In men and women, 15.7% (35/223) and 34.5% (48/139) of vertebrae with SQ grade-1 deformity were ABQ(+, with fracture) respectively. In men and women, 89.7% (35/39) and 66.7% (48/72) of vertebrae with ABQ grade-1 fracture had SQ grade-1 deformity. For grade-1 change, SQ (-, negative without fracture) & ABQ (+, positive with vertebral cortex line fracture) subjects tend to have a lower BMD than the SQ(+)& ABQ(-) subjects. In subjects with SQ grade-2 deformity, those were also ABQ(+) tended to have a lower BMD than those were ABQ(-). In all grades, SQ(-)&ABQ(-) subjects tended to have highest BMD, while SQ(+)&ABQ(+)subjects tended to have lowest BMD. Conclusion: ABQ method may be more sensitive to VF associated mild lower BMD than SQ method.

The pressure-induced transition of vanadium from BCC to rhombohedral structures is unique and intriguing among transition metals. In this work, the stability of these phases is revisited by using density functional theory. At finite temperatures, a novel transition of rhombohedral phases back to BCC phase induced by thermal electrons is discovered. This reentrant transition is found not driven by phonons, instead it is the electronic entropy that stabilizes the latter phase, which is totally out of expectation. Parallel to this transition, we find a peculiar and strong increase of the shear modulus C44 with increasing temperature. It is counter-intuitive in the sense that it suggests an unusual harding mechanism of vanadium by temperature. With these stability analyses, the high-pressure and finite-temperature phase diagram of vanadium is proposed. Furthermore, the dependence of the stability of RH phases on the Fermi energy and chemical environment is investigated. The results demonstrate that the position of the Fermi level has a significant impact on the phase stability, and follows the band-filling argument. Besides the Fermi surface nesting, we find that the localization/delocalization of the d orbitals also contributes to the instability of rhombohedral distortions in vanadium.

We present a systematic study of the structural and magnetic properties of two branches of the rare earth Tripod Kagome Lattice (TKL) family A$_{2}$RE$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$O$_{14}$ (A = Mg, Zn; RE = Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb; here, we use abbreviation \textit{A-RE}, as in \textit{MgPr} for Mg$_{2}$Pr$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$O$_{14}$), which complements our previously reported work on \textit{MgDy}, \textit{MgGd}, and \textit{MgEr} \cite{TKL}. The present susceptibility ($χ_{dc}$, $χ_{ac}$) and specific heat measurements reveal various magnetic ground states, including the non-magnetic singlet state for \textit{MgPr}, \textit{ZnPr}; long range orderings (LROs) for \textit{MgGd}, \textit{ZnGd}, \textit{MgNd}, \textit{ZnNd}, and \textit{MgYb}; a long range magnetic charge ordered state for \textit{MgDy}, \textit{ZnDy}, and potentially for \textit{MgHo}; possible spin glass states for \textit{ZnEr}, \textit{ZnHo}; the absence of spin ordering down to 80 mK for \textit{MgEr}, \textit{MgTb}, \textit{ZnTb}, and \textit{ZnYb} compounds. The ground states observed here bear both similarities as well as striking differences from the states found in the parent pyrochlore systems. In particular, while the TKLs display a greater tendency towards LRO, the lack of LRO in \textit{MgHo}, \textit{MgTb} and \textit{ZnTb} can be viewed from the standpoint of a balance among spin-spin interactions, anisotropies and non-Kramers nature of single ion state. While substituting Zn for Mg changes the chemical pressure, and subtly modifies the interaction energies for compounds with larger RE ions, this substitution introduces structural disorder and modifies the ground states for compounds with smaller RE ions (Ho, Er, Yb).

Purpose: Rupture of an intracranial aneurysm is the most common cause of subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), which is a life-threatening acute cerebrovascular event that typically affects working-age people. This study aims to investigate the aneurysmal SAH incidence rate in elderly population than in middle aged population in China. Materials and methods: Aneurysmal SAH cases were collected retrospectively from the archives of 21 hospitals in Mainland China. All the cases collected were from September 2016 and backward consecutively for a period of time up to 8 years. SAH was initially diagnosed by brain computed tomography, and CT angiography (CTA) or digital subtraction angiography (DSA) was followed and SAH was confirmed to be due to cerebral aneurysm. When for cases multiple bleeding occurred, the age of the first SAH was used in this study. The toltal incidence from all hospital at each age were summed together for females and males; then adjusted by the total population number at each age for females and males. The total population data was from the 2010 population census of the People's Republic of China. Results: In total there were 8,144 cases, with 4,861 females and 3,283 males. Our analysis shows for both females and males the relative aneurysmal SAH rate started to decrease after around 65 years old. The males the relative aneurysmal SAH rate might have started to decrease after around 55 years old. Conclusion: In contrast to previous reports, our data demonstrated a decreased aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage incidence rate in elderly population than in middle aged population. Our data therefore support the hypothesis that aneurysms do not grow progressively once they form but probably either rupture or stabilize and that very elderly patients are at a reduced risk of rupture compared with atients who are younger with the same-sized aneurysms.
