I-mode is a promising regime for future fusion reactors due to the high energy confinement and the moderate particle confinement. However, the effect of lithium, which has been widely applied for particle recycling and impurity control, on I-mode plasma is still unclear. Recently, experiments of real-time lithium powder injection on I-mode plasma have been carried out in EAST Tokamak. It was found that the confinement performance of the I-mode can be improved by the lithium powder injection, which can strongly reduce electron turbulence (ET) and then trigger ion turbulence (IT). Four different regimes of I-mode have been identified in EAST. The Type I I-mode plasma is characterized by the weakly coherent mode (WCM) and the geodesic-acoustic mode (GAM). The Type II I-mode is featured as the WCM and the edge temperature ring oscillation (ETRO). The Type III I-mode corresponds to the plasma with the co-existence of ETRO, GAM, and WCM. The Type IV I-mode denotes the plasma with only WCM but without ETRO and GAM. It has been observed that WCM and ETRO are increased with lithium powder injection due to the reduction of ion and electron turbulence, and the enhancement of the pedestal electron temperature gradient. EAST experiments demonstrate that lithium powder injection is an effective tool for real-time control and confinement improvement of I-mode plasma.

Gamma rays from HESS J1849$-$000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches $4.0\, σ$ and $4.4\, σ$ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of Gaussian standard deviation $σ$. The energy spectrum measured between $40\, {\rm TeV} < E < 320\, {\rm TeV}$ for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (2.86 \pm 1.44) \times 10^{-16}(E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-2.24 \pm 0.41}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV ($E < 1\, {\rm TeV}$) to sub-PeV ($100\, {\rm TeV} < E < 1\, {\rm PeV}$) ranges including the results of previous studies can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, inverse Compton scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849$-$0001. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can also be modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons $E_{\rm p\, cut}$, cut is estimated at ${\rm log}_{10}(E_{\rm p,\, cut}/{\rm TeV}) = 3.73^{+2.98}_{-0.66}$, suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. Our study thus proposes that HESS J1849$-$000 should be further investigated as a new candidate for a Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, PeVatron.

Abstract:
Two issues related to the microwave surface impedance Z_s of MgB_2 thin film are discussed in this Letter, both being significant for potential microwave applications. At first, a correlation between Zs and Alpha = Xi/l was found, where Xi is the coherence length, and l is the mean free path. Two issues related to the microwave surface impedance Z_s of MgB_2 thin film are discussed in this Letter, both being significant for potential microwave applications. At first, a correlation between Zs and Alpha = Xi/l was found, where Xi is the coherence length, and l is the mean free path. The surface resistance Rs decreases with Alpha at moderate and large values of Alpha and saturates when Alpha approaches one. The values of the penetration depth at zero temperature Lamda(0) for different films could be well fitted by Lamda_L (1+Alpha)^(1/2), yielding a London penetration depth Lamda_L of 33.6 nm. The second issue is to find a temperature niche for possible microwave applications. Between 10K and 15K, our best MgB_2 films possess the lowest Rs values compared with other superconductors such as NbN, Nb3Sn and the high-temperature superconductor YBCO.

Estimates using hysteresis loops and the Bean model give a value of 2.78 x 10$^{3}$ A/cm2 (77K, 0T) for the critical current density. The observations of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) show the supercoducting Y123 phase matrix containing discrete Y211 inclusions.

Magneto-resistivity of a c-axis oriented MgB$_{2}$ thin film was studied in perpendicular and parallel magnetic fields up to $\sim $23 T with temperatures down to 0.38 K. Resistive critical magnetic fields were determined. Large separations between irreversibility lines and upper critical magnetic fields are observed. An effective quantum parameter as a function of temperature is proposed to explain the separations under the theoretical framework of quantum fluctuations, in good agreement with our experimental and previously published experimental data.
