The MANTA (Modular Adjustable Negative Triangularity ARC-class) design study investigated how negative-triangularity (NT) may be leveraged in a compact, fusion pilot plant (FPP) to take a ``power-handling first" approach. The result is a pulsed, radiative, ELM-free tokamak that satisfies and exceeds the FPP requirements described in the 2021 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report ``Bringing Fusion to the U.S. Grid". A self-consistent integrated modeling workflow predicts a fusion power of 450 MW and a plasma gain of 11.5 with only 23.5 MW of power to the scrape-off layer (SOL). This low $P_\text{SOL}$ together with impurity seeding and high density at the separatrix results in a peak heat flux of just 2.8 MW/m$^{2}$. MANTA's high aspect ratio provides space for a large central solenoid (CS), resulting in ${\sim}$15 minute inductive pulses. In spite of the high B fields on the CS and the other REBCO-based magnets, the electromagnetic stresses remain below structural and critical current density limits. Iterative optimization of neutron shielding and tritium breeding blanket yield tritium self-sufficiency with a breeding ratio of 1.15, a blanket power multiplication factor of 1.11, toroidal field coil lifetimes of $3100 \pm 400$ MW-yr, and poloidal field coil lifetimes of at least $890 \pm 40$ MW-yr. Following balance of plant modeling, MANTA is projected to generate 90 MW of net electricity at an electricity gain factor of ${\sim}2.4$. Systems-level economic analysis estimates an overnight cost of US\$3.4 billion, meeting the NASEM FPP requirement that this first-of-a-kind be less than US\$5 billion. The toroidal field coil cost and replacement time are the most critical upfront and lifetime cost drivers, respectively.

The tokamak offers a promising path to fusion energy, but plasma disruptions pose a major economic risk, motivating considerable advances in disruption avoidance. This work develops a reinforcement learning approach to this problem by training a policy to safely ramp-down the plasma current while avoiding limits on a number of quantities correlated with disruptions. The policy training environment is a hybrid physics and machine learning model trained on simulations of the SPARC primary reference discharge (PRD) ramp-down, an upcoming burning plasma scenario which we use as a testbed. To address physics uncertainty and model inaccuracies, the simulation environment is massively parallelized on GPU with randomized physics parameters during policy training. The trained policy is then successfully transferred to a higher fidelity simulator where it successfully ramps down the plasma while avoiding user-specified disruptive limits. We also address the crucial issue of safety criticality by demonstrating that a constraint-conditioned policy can be used as a trajectory design assistant to design a library of feed-forward trajectories to handle different physics conditions and user settings. As a library of trajectories is more interpretable and verifiable offline, we argue such an approach is a promising path for leveraging the capabilities of reinforcement learning in the safety-critical context of burning plasma tokamaks. Finally, we demonstrate how the training environment can be a useful platform for other feed-forward optimization approaches by using an evolutionary algorithm to perform optimization of feed-forward trajectories that are robust to physics uncertainty

While fusion reactors known as tokamaks hold promise as a firm energy source, advances in plasma control, and handling of events where control of plasmas is lost, are needed for them to be economical. A significant bottleneck towards applying more advanced control algorithms is the need for better plasma simulation, where both physics-based and data-driven approaches currently fall short. The former is bottle-necked by both computational cost and the difficulty of modelling plasmas, and the latter is bottle-necked by the relative paucity of data. To address this issue, this work applies the neural ordinary differential equations (ODE) framework to the problem of predicting a subset of plasma dynamics, namely the coupled plasma current and internal inductance dynamics. As the neural ODE framework allows for the natural inclusion of physics-based inductive biases, we train both physics-based and neural network models on data from the Alcator C-Mod fusion reactor and find that a model that combines physics-based equations with a neural ODE performs better than both existing physics-motivated ODEs and a pure neural ODE model.

By introducing the "comparison and replacement" (CNR) operation, we propose a general-purpose pure quantum approximate optimization algorithm and derive its core optimization mechanism quantitatively. The algorithm is constructed to a $p$-level divide-and-conquer structure based on the CNR operations. The quality of approximate optimization improves with the increase of $p$. For sufficiently general optimization problems, the algorithm can work and produce the near-optimal solutions as expected with considerably high probability. Moreover, we demonstrate that the algorithm is scalable to be applied to large size problems. Our algorithm is applied to two optimization problems with significantly different degeneracy, the Gaussian weighted 2-edge graph and MAX-2-XOR, and then we show the algorithm performance in detail when the required qubits number of the two optimization problems is 10.

Discussions about whether quantum theory is determinism or indeterminism has lasted for a century. A new approach to standard quantum mechanics called many-interacting-worlds method based on many-worlds interpretation and de Broglie-Bohm mechanics provided the possibility to demonstrate probability from deterministic universe. The many-interacting-worlds method has been proved successful in the ground state of harmonic oscillator. In this article we extend this method to one dimensional Coulomb potential and construct a corresponding empirical density function. We also provide a theoretical proof of the convergence of density function. Our numerical simulation of one dimensional Coulomb potential in the first excited state obtains the consistent result with standard quantum mechanics and shows the applicability of many-interacting-worlds method. This research provides the possibility to extend many-interacting-worlds method to non-Gaussian quantum systems.

The quantum version of a special classical Wheatstone bridge built with a boundary-driven spin system has recently been proposed. We propose a quantum Wheatstone bridge consisting of Bose systems, which can simulate the general classical Wheatstone bridge. Unknown coupling can be obtained when the quantum Wheatstone bridge is balanced, which can be determined simply by the homodyne detection. When the expectation value of the homodyne detection is 0, the quantum Wheatstone bridge is unbalanced. Regulate a known coupling strength to make the expectation value of the homodyne detection be proportional to the square root of the initial number of bosons, which means that the quantum Wheatstone bridge is balanced. By calculating the quantum Fisher information, we show that the measurement precision is optimal when the quantum Wheatstone bridge is balanced. And the homodyne detection is close to the optimal measurement in the case of low-temperature baths.

We mainly investigate the quantum measurement of Kerr nonlinearity in the driven-dissipative system. Without the dissipation, the measurement precision of the nonlinearity parameter $χ$ scales as "super-Heisenberg scaling" $1/N^2$ with $N$ being the total average number of particles (photons) due to the nonlinear generator. Here, we find that "super-Heisenberg scaling" $1/N^{3/2}$ can also be obtained by choosing a proper interrogation time. In the steady state, the "super-Heisenberg scaling" $1/N^{3/2}$ can only be achieved when the nonlinearity parameter is close to 0 in the case of the single-photon loss and the one-photon driving or the two-photon driving. The "super-Heisenberg scaling" disappears with the increase of the strength of the nonlinearity. When the system suffers from the two-photon loss in addition to the single-photon loss, the optimal measurement precision will not appear at the nonlinearity $χ=0$ in the case of the one-photon driving. Counterintuitively, in the case of the two-photon driving we find that it is not the case that the higher the two-photon loss, the lower the measurement precision. It means that the measurement precision of $χ$ can be improved to some extent by increasing the two-photon loss.

We investigate the ultimate quantum limit of resolving the temperatures of two thermal sources affected by the diffraction. More quantum Fisher information can be obtained with the priori information than that without the priori information. We carefully consider two strategies: the simultaneous estimation and the individual estimation. The simultaneous estimation of two temperatures is proved to satisfy the saturation condition of quantum Cramér bound and performs better than the individual estimation in the case of small degree of diffraction given the same resources. However, in the case of high degree of diffraction, the individual estimation performs better. In particular, at the maximum diffraction, the simultaneous estimation can not get any information, which is supported by a practical measurement, while the individual estimation can still get the information. In addition, we find that for the individual estimation, a practical and feasible estimation strategy by using the full Hermite-Gauss basis can saturate the quantum Cramér bound without being affected by the attenuation factor at the maximum diffraction. using the full Hermite-Gauss basis can saturate the quantum Cramér bound without being affected by the attenuation factor at the maximum diffraction.

We use the exceptional point in Hopfield-Bogoliubov matrix to find the phase transition points in the bosonic system. In many previous jobs, the excitation energy vanished at the critical point. It can be stated equivalently that quantum critical point is obtained when the determinant of Hopfield-Bogoliubov matrix vanishes. We analytically obtain the Hopfield-Bogoliubov matrix corresponding to the general quadratic Hamiltonian. For single-mode system the appearance of the exceptional point in Hopfield-Bogoliubov matrix is equivalent to the disappearance of the determinant of Hopfield-Bogoliubov matrix. However, in multi-mode bosonic system, they are not equivalent except in some special cases. For example, in the case of perfect symmetry, that is, swap** any two subsystems and kee** the total Hamiltonian invariable, the exceptional point and the degenerate point coincide all the time when the phase transition occurs. When the exceptional point and the degenerate point do not coincide, we find a significant result. With the increase of two-photon driving intensity, the normal phase changes to the superradiant phase, then the superradiant phase changes to the normal phase, and finally the normal phase changes to the superradiant phase.

Dissipative quantum Rabi System, a finite-component system composed of a single two-level atom interacting with an optical cavity field mode, exhibits a quantum phase transition, which can be exploited to greatly enhance the estimation precision of unitary parameters (frequency and coupling strength). Here, using the quantum Langevin equation, standard mean field theory and adiabatic elimination, we investigate the quantum thermometry of a thermal bath surrounding the atom with quantum optical probes. With the increase of coupling strength between the atom and the cavity field, two kinds of singularities can be observed. One type of singularity is the exceptional point (EP) in the anti-parity-time (anti-$\mathcal{PT}$) symmetrical cavity field. The other type of singularity is the critical point (CP) of phase transition from the normal to superradiant phase. We show that the optimal measurement precision occurs at the CP, instead of the EP. And the direct photon detection represents an excellent proxy for the optimal measurement near the CP. In the case where the thermal bath to be tested is independent of the extra thermal bath interacting with the cavity field, the estimation precision of the temperature always increases with the coupling strength. Oppositely, if the thermal bath to be tested is in equilibrium with the extra bath interacting with the cavity field, noises that suppress the information of the temperature will be introduced when increasing the coupling strength unless it is close to the CP.

We investigate the advantage of coherent superposition of two different coded channels in quantum metrology. In a continuous variable system, we show that the Heisenberg limit $1/N$ can be beaten by the coherent superposition without the help of indefinite causal order. And in parameter estimation, we demonstrate that the strategy with the coherent superposition can perform better than the strategy with quantum \textsc{switch} which can generate indefinite causal order. We analytically obtain the general form of estimation precision in terms of the quantum Fisher information and further prove that the nonlinear Hamiltonian can improve the estimation precision and make the measurement uncertainty scale as $1/N^m$ for $m\geq2$. Our results can help to construct a high-precision measurement equipment, which can be applied to the detection of coupling strength and the test of time dilation and the modification of the canonical commutation relation.

And the direct photon detection is the optimal measurement for the initial state in the vacuum input state. For the open PT symmetrical two magnons system, the quantum fluctuations will greatly reduce the degree of entanglement. It has been found that the quantum-to-classical transition can be observed independent of macroscopicity of the quantum state for a fixed degree of fuzziness in the coarsened references of measurements. Here, a general situation, that is the degree of fuzziness can change with the rotation angle between two states (different rotation angles represent different references), is researched based on the reason that the fuzziness of reference can come from two kinds: the Hamiltonian (rotation frequency) and the timing (rotation time). Our results show that, for the fuzziness of Hamiltonian alone, the degree of fuzziness for reference will change with the rotation angle between two states and the quantum effects can still be observed no matter how much degree of fuzziness of Hamiltonian; for the fuzziness of timing, the degree of coarsening reference is unchanged with the rotation angle. Moreover, during the rotation of the measurement axis, the decoherence environment can also help the classical-to-quantum transition due to changing the direction of measurement axis.

It is verified that in standard Ramsey spectroscopy setup, the metrological equivalence of product and maximally entangled states persists in maximally correlated Markovian and non-Markovian environments. We find that the optimal measurement can achieve a much higher resolution than standard Ramsey spectroscopy in the correlated environments. When the number of particles in the maximally entangled states is even, the precision bound decreases with interrogation time; and when the number is odd, the precision bound is independent of interrogation time, both in correlated Markovian and general non-Markovian environments. It has been found that the initial correlations between two environments can turn a Markovian to a non-Markovian regime with the extra control on the local interaction time. It shows that the correlations between two environments has an upper bound: only making a flow of information from the environment back to the global system begin finitely earlier than that back to any one of two local systems, not infinitely. Then, due to observing that the classical correlations between two environments have the same function as the quantum correlations, we advise two special ways to distribute classical correlations between two environments without initial correlations. Finally, from numerical solutions in the spin star configuration we obtain that the self-correlation(internal correlation) of each environment promotes the nonlocal non-Markovian effects.

But the reduced single-particle matrices and their momentum distributions between them are different.

We investigate quantum strategy in moving frames by considering Prisoner's Dilemma and propose four thresholds of $γ$ for two players to determine their \textit{Nash Equilibria}. Specially, an interesting phenomenon appears in relativistic situation that the quantum feature of the game would be enhanced and diminished for different players whose particle's initial spin direction are respectively parallel and antiparallel to his/her movement direction, that is, for the former the quantum feature of the game is enhanced while for the latter the quantum feature would be diminished. Thus a classical latter could still maintain his/her strictly dominant strategy (classical strategy) even if the game itself is highly entangled.

We investigate the local implementation of nonlocal operations with the block matrix form, and propose a protocol for any diagonal or offdiagonal block operation. This method can be directly generalized to the two-party multiqubit case and the multiparty case. Especially, in the multiparty cases, any diagonal block operation can be locally implemented using the same resources as the multiparty control-U operation discussed in Ref. [Eisert et al., Phys. Rev. A 62, 052317(2000)]. Although in the bipartite case, this kind of operations can be transformed to control-U operation using local operations, these transformations are impossible in the multiparty cases. We also compare the local implementation of nonlocal block operations with the remote implementation of local operations, and point out a relation between them.

We propose an improved scheme of perturbation theory based on our exact solution [An Min Wang, quant-ph/0611216] in general quantum systems independent of time. Our elementary start-point is to introduce the perturbing parameter as late as possible. Our main skills are Hamiltonian redivision so as to overcome a flaw of the usual perturbation theory, and the perturbing Hamiltonian matrix product decomposition in order to separate the contraction and anti-contraction terms. Our calculational technology is the limit process for eliminating apparent divergences. Our central idea is ``dynamical rearrangement and summation" for the sake of the partial contributions from the high order even all order approximations absorbed in our perturbed solution. Consequently, we obtain the improved forms of the zeroth, first, second and third order perturbed solutions absorbing the partial contributions from the high order even all order approximations of perturbation. Then we deduce the improved transition probability. In special, we propose the revised Fermi's golden rule. Moreover, we apply our scheme to obtain the improved forms of perturbed energy and perturbed state. In addition, we study an easy understanding example of two-state system to illustrate our scheme and show its advantages. All of this implies the physical reasons and evidences why our improved scheme of perturbation theory are actually calculable, operationally efficient, conclusively more accurate. Our improved scheme is the further development and interesting application of our exact solution, and it has been successfully used to study on open system dynamics [An Min Wang, quant-ph/0601051].

Starting from our idea of combining the Feynman path integral spirit and the Dyson series kernel, we find an explicit and general form of time evolution operator that is a $c$-number function and a power series of perturbation including all order approximations in the unperturbed Hamiltonian representation. Based on it, we obtain an exact solution of the Schrödinger equation in general quantum systems independent of time. Comparison of our exact solution with the existed perturbation theory makes some features and significance of our exact solution clear. The conclusions expressly indicate that our exact solution is obviously consistent with the usual time-independent perturbation theory at any order approximation, it explicitly calculates out the expanding coefficients of the unperturbed state in the non-perturbation method, and it fully solves the recurrence equation of the expansion coefficients of final state in the unperturbed Hamiltonian representation from a view of time-dependent perturbation theory. At the same time, the exact solution of the von Neumann equation is also given. Our results can be thought of as theoretical developments of quantum dynamics, and are helpful for understanding the dynamical behavior and related subjects of general quantum systems in both theory and application. Our exact solution, together with its sequence studies on perturbation theory [An Min Wang, quant-ph/0611217] and open system dynamics [An Min Wang, quant-ph/0601051] can be used to establish the foundation of theoretical formulism of quantum mechanics in general quantum systems. In a system-environment separated representation, a general and explicit solution of open system dynamics is obtained, and it is an exact solution since it includes all order approximations of perturbation. In terms of the cut-off approximation of perturbation and our improved scheme of perturbation theory, the improved form of the perturbed solution of open systems absorbing the partial contributions from the high order even all order approximations is deduced. Moreover, only under the factorizing initial condition, the exact master equation including all order approximations is proposed. Correspondingly, the perturbed master equation and its improved form different from the existed master equation are given. We have developed a concrete quantum simulation scheme and experimentally simulated a pairing model on an NMR quantum computer. The design of our experiment includes choosing an appropriate initial state in order to make our scheme scalable in near future, and the accomplishment of our experiment makes use of twice Fourier transforms so that our method is applicable to other physical models. Our results show that the experimental simulation can give the spectrum of the simulated Hamiltonian. Consequently, the potential power of a quantum computer on the simulation of complex physical systems is verified.
