The paper is concerned with an optimal control problem governed by the equations of elasto plasticity with linear kinematic hardening and the inertia term at small strain. The objective is to optimize the displacement field and plastic strain by controlling volume forces. The idea given in [10] is used to transform the state equation into an evolution variational inequality (EVI) involving a certain maximal monotone operator. Results from [27] are then used to analyze the EVI. A regularization is obtained via the Yosida approximation of the maximal monotone operator, this approximation is smoothed further to derive optimality conditions for the smoothed optimal control problem.

The paper is concerned with an optimal control problem governed by the rate-independent system of quasi-static perfect elasto-plasticity. The objective is optimize the displacement field in the domain occupied by the body by means of prescribed Dirichlet boundary data, which serve as control variables. The arising optimization problem is nonsmooth for several reasons, in particular, since the control-to-state map** is not single-valued. We therefore apply a Yosida regularization to obtain a single-valued control-to-state operator. Beside the existence of optimal solutions, their approximation by means of this regularization approach is the main subject of this work. It turns out that a so-called reverse approximation guaranteeing the existence of a suitable recovery sequence can only be shown under an additional smoothness assumption on at least one optimal solution.

The ability to design and control the spin and charge order of low dimensional materials on the molecular scale offers an intriguing pathway towards the miniaturization of spintronic technology towards the nanometer scale. In this work, we focus on the adsorption induced modifications of the magnetic and electronic properties of a low dimensional ferromagnetic surface alloy after the adsorption of the prototypical organic molecule perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA). For this metal-organic interface, we observe the formation of a localized $σ$-like bond between the functional molecular groups and the surface alloy atoms. This strong chemical bonding coincides with a lifting of the characteristic surface alloy band structure and a reduction of the magnitude of the local magnetic moments of the Dy atoms by 18%. We attribute both findings to a mixing of spin-degenerate molecular states with spin-split states of the Dy-Ag surface alloy via the sigma-like bonds between PTCDA and the Dy surface alloy atoms. Our findings clearly demonstrate the potential of tailored molecule-surface sigma-bonds to control not only the electronic but also the magnetic order of low dimensional materials.

The paper is concerned with an optimal control problem governed by the rate-independent system of quasi-static perfect elasto-plasticity. The objective is to optimize the stress field by controlling the displacement at prescribed parts of the boundary. The control thus enters the system in the Dirichlet boundary conditions. Therefore, the safe load condition is automatically fulfilled so that the system admits a solution, whose stress field is unique. This gives rise to a well defined control-to-state operator, which is continuous but not Gateaux-differentiable. The control-to-state map is therefore regularized, first by means of the Yosida regularization and then by a second smoothing in order to obtain a smooth problem. The approximation of global minimizers of the original non-smooth optimal control problem is shown and optimality conditions for the regularized problem are established. A numerical example illustrates the feasibility of the smoothing approach.

The paper is concerned with an optimal control problem governed by a state equation in form of a generalized abstract operator differential equation involving a maximal monotone operator. The state equation is uniquely solvable, but the associated solution operator is in general not Gâteaux-differentiable. In order to derive optimality conditions, we therefore regularize the state equation and its solution operator, respectively, by means of a (smoothed) Yosida approximation. We show convergence of global minimizers for regularization parameter tending to zero and derive necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for the regularized problems. The paper ends with an application of the abstract theory to optimal control of homogenized quasi-static elastoplasticity.

Modelling statistical relationships beyond the conditional mean is crucial in many settings. Conditional density estimation (CDE) aims to learn the full conditional probability density from data. Though highly expressive, neural network based CDE models can suffer from severe over-fitting when trained with the maximum likelihood objective. Due to the inherent structure of such models, classical regularization approaches in the parameter space are rendered ineffective. To address this issue, we develop a model-agnostic noise regularization method for CDE that adds random perturbations to the data during training. We demonstrate that the proposed approach corresponds to a smoothness regularization and prove its asymptotic consistency. In our experiments, noise regularization significantly and consistently outperforms other regularization methods across seven data sets and three CDE models. The effectiveness of noise regularization makes neural network based CDE the preferable method over previous non- and semi-parametric approaches, even when training data is scarce.

Here, we study the spin-dependent band structure of a DyAg$_2$ surface alloy formed on an Ag(111) crystal. We find a significant exchange spin-splitting of the localized Dy 4f states pointing to a ferromagnetic coupling between the localized Dy moments at $40\,$K. The magnetic coupling between these moments is mediated by an indirect, RKKY-like exchange coupling via the spin-polarized electrons of the hole-like Dy-Ag hybrid surface state.

Given a set of empirical observations, conditional density estimation aims to capture the statistical relationship between a conditional variable $\mathbf{x}$ and a dependent variable $\mathbf{y}$ by modeling their conditional probability $p(\mathbf{y}|\mathbf{x})$. The paper develops best practices for conditional density estimation for finance applications with neural networks, grounded on mathematical insights and empirical evaluations. In particular, we introduce a noise regularization and data normalization scheme, alleviating problems with over-fitting, initialization and hyper-parameter sensitivity of such estimators. We compare our proposed methodology with popular semi- and non-parametric density estimators, underpin its effectiveness in various benchmarks on simulated and Euro Stoxx 50 data and show its superior performance. Our methodology allows to obtain high-quality estimators for statistical expectations of higher moments, quantiles and non-linear return transformations, with very little assumptions about the return dynamic.

In recent and future synchrotron radiation facilities, relativistic electron bunches with increasingly high charge density are needed for producing brilliant light at various wavelengths, from X-rays to terahertz. In such conditions, interaction of electrons bunches with their own emitted electromagnetic fields leads to instabilities and spontaneous formation of complex spatial structures. Understanding these instabilities is therefore key in most electron accelerators. However, investigations suffer from the lack of non-destructive recording tools for electron bunch shapes. In storage rings, most studies thus focus on the resulting emitted radiation. Here, we present measurements of the electric field in the immediate vicinity of the electron bunch in a storage ring, over many turns. For recording the ultrafast electric field, we designed a photonic time-stretch analog-to-digital converter with terasamples/second acquisition rate. We could thus observe the predicted link between spontaneous pattern formation and giant bursts of coherent synchrotron radiation in a storage ring.

The development of fast detection methods for comprehensive monitoring of electron bunches is a prerequisite to gain comprehensive control over the synchrontron emission in storage rings with their MHz repetition rate. Here, we present a proof-of-principle experiment with at detailed description of our implementation to detect the longitudinal electron bunch profiles via single-shot, near-field electro-optical sampling at the Karlsruhe Research Accelerator (KARA). Our experiment is equipped with an ultra-fast line array camera providing a high-throughput MHz data stream. We characterize statistical properties of the obtained data set and give a detailed description for the data processing as well as for the calculation of the charge density profiles, which where measured in the short-bunch operation mode of KARA. Finally, we discuss properties of the bunch profile dynamics on a coarse-grained level on the example of the well-known synchrotron oscillation.

This paper is concerned with an optimal control problem governed by a non-smooth semilinear elliptic equation. We show that the control-to-state map** is directionally differentiable and precisely characterize its Bouligand subdifferential. By means of a suitable regularization, first-order optimality conditions including an adjoint equation are derived and afterwards interpreted in light of the previously obtained characterization. In addition, the directional derivative of the control-to-state map** is used to establish strong stationarity conditions. While the latter conditions are shown to be stronger, we demonstrate by numerical examples that the former conditions are amenable to numerical solution using a semi-smooth Newton method.
