Compton scattering provides invaluable information on the underlying Fermi surface (FS) and is a powerful tool complementary to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quantum oscillation measurements. Here we perform high-resolution Compton scattering measurements for La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} with x=0.08 (Tc=20K) at 300K and 150K, and image the momentum distribution function in the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. We find that the observed images cannot be reconciled with the conventional hole-like FS believed so far. Instead, our data imply that the FS is strongly deformed by the underlying nematicity in each CuO_2 plane, but the bulk FSs recover the fourfold symmetry. We also find an unusually strong temperature dependence of the momentum distribution function, which may originate from the pseudogap formation in the presence of the reconstructed FSs due to the underlying nematicity. Additional measurements for x=0.15 and 0.30 at 300K suggest similar FS deformation with weaker nematicity, which nearly vanishes at x=0.30.

Rev. B {\bf 91}, 224404 (2015), {\it ibid}. {\bf 93}, 094416 (2016)]. We confirmed the presence of a peak-structure in the $ω$-dependence of the local spin susceptibility $χ''(ω)$ of superconducting (SC) LSCO with a peak energy of 16--19 meV, where the spin excitations intersect optical phonon branches. A comparable peak-structure is not observed in the insulating La$_2$CuO$_4$, LSNO, and heavily overdoped LSCO with $x$ = 0.30. A dome-shaped $x$-dependence of the integrated intensity around the peak energies is revealed for SC phase by summarizing the present and previously reported results. Furthermore, our phonon calculation on LCO shows the existence of two optical branches at $\sim$19 meV that could stabilize stripe-alignment of carriers due to out-of-plane vibrations of Cu or O of the CuO$_2$ planes. These results indicate the interplay among spin, charge, and lattice dynamics and suggest that the intensity enhancement is associated with their composite excitations.

To elucidate the spin dynamics of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, which couples with the charge degree of freedom, the spin excitations spanning the characteristic energy ($E_{\rm cross}$ $\sim$35-40 meV) are investigated for underdoped $x$ = 0.10 and optimally doped (OP) $x$ = 0.16 through inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Analysis based on a two-component picture of high-quality data clarified the possible coexistence of uprightly standing incommensurate (IC) excitations with gapless commensurate (C) excitations in the energy-momentum space. The IC component weakens the intensity toward $E_{\rm cross}$ with increasing energy transfer ($\hbarω$), whereas the C component strengthens at high-$\hbarω$ regions. The analysis results imply that the superposition of two components with a particular intensity balance forms an hourglass-shaped excitation in appearance. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the intensity of each component exhibits different behaviors; the IC component disappears near the pseudo-gap temperature ($T$*) upon warming, whereas the C component is robust against temperature. These results suggest the itinerant electron spin nature and the localized magnetism of the parent La$_2$CuO$_4$ in IC and C excitations, respectively, similar to the spin excitations in the OP YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ with higher superconducting-transition temperatures.

Glassiness is ubiquitous and diverse in characteristics in nature. Understanding their differences and classification remains a major scientific challenge. Here, we show that scaling of magnetic memories with time can be used to classify magnetic glassy materials into two distinct classes. The systems studied are high-temperature superconductor-related materials, spin-orbit Mott insulators, frustrated magnets, and dilute magnetic alloys. Our bulk magnetization measurements reveal that most densely populated magnets exhibit similar memory behavior characterized by a relaxation exponent of 1-n ~ 0.6(1). This exponent is different from 1-n ~ 1/3 of dilute magnetic alloys that was ascribed to their hierarchical and fractal energy landscape and is also different from 1-n=1 of the conventional Debye relaxation expected for a spin solid, a state with long range order. Furthermore, our systematic study on dilute magnetic alloys with varying magnetic concentration exhibits crossovers among the two glassy states and spin solid.

The nanometer scale lattice deformation brought about by the dopants in high temperature superconducting cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$(x=0.08) was investigated by measuring the associated X-ray diffuse scattering around multiple Bragg peaks. A characteristic diffuse scattering pattern was observed, which can be well described by continuum elastic theory. With the fitted dipole force parameters, the acoustic type lattice deformation pattern was re-constructed and found to be of similar size to lattice thermal vibration at 7 K. Our results address the long-term concern of dopant introduced local lattice inhomogeneity, and show that the associated nanometer scale lattice deformation is marginal and cannot, alone, be responsible for the patched variation in the spectral gaps observed with scanning tunneling microscopy in the cuprates.

RIXS spectra of the hole-doped cuprates show clear momentum dependence below 1 eV. The spectral weight exhibits positive dispersion and shifts to higher energy with increasing hole concentration. Theoretical calculation of the dynamical charge structure factor on oxygen orbitals in a three-band Hubbard model is consistent with the experimental observation of the momentum and do** dependence, and therefore the dispersive mode is ascribed to intraband charge excitations which have been observed in electron-doped cuprates.

We present a systematic study of spin and lattice dynamics in the quasi-one-dimensional spiral magnet CuBr2, using Raman scattering in conjunction with infrared and neutron spectroscopy. Along with the development of spin correlations upon cooling, we observe a rich set of broad Raman bands at energies that correspond to phonon-dispersion energies near the one-dimensional magnetic wave vector. The low-energy bands further exhibit a distinct intensity maximum at the spiral magnetic ordering temperature. We attribute these unusual observations to two possible underlying mechanisms: (1) formation of hybrid spin-lattice excitations, and/or (2) "quadrumerization" of the lattice caused by spin-singlet entanglement in competition with the spiral magnetism.

We have performed neutron inelastic scattering and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu-$L_3$ edge to study high-energy magnetic excitations at energy transfers of more than 100 meV for overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with $x=0.25$ ($T_c=15$ K) and $x=0.30$ (non-superconducting) using identical single crystal samples for the two techniques. From constant-energy slices of neutron scattering cross-sections, we have identified magnetic excitations up to ~250 meV for $x=0.25$. Although the width in the momentum direction is large, the peak positions along the (pi, pi) direction agree with the dispersion relation of the spin-wave in the non-doped La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ (LCO), which is consistent with the previous RIXS results of cuprate superconductors. Using RIXS at the Cu-$L_3$ edge, we have measured the dispersion relations of the so-called paramagnon mode along both (pi, pi) and (pi, 0) directions. Although in both directions the neutron and RIXS data connect with each other and the paramagnon along (pi, 0) agrees well with the LCO spin-wave dispersion, the paramagnon in the (pi, pi) direction probed by RIXS appears to be less dispersive and the excitation energy is lower than the spin-wave of LCO near (pi/2, pi/2). Thus, our results indicate consistency between neutron inelastic scattering and RIXS, and elucidate the entire magnetic excitation in the (pi, pi) direction by the complementary use of two probes. The polarization dependence of the RIXS profiles indicates that appreciable charge excitations exist in the same energy range of magnetic excitations, reflecting the itinerant character of the overdoped sample. A possible anisotropy in the charge excitation intensity might explain the apparent differences in the paramagnon dispersion in the (pi, pi) direction as detected by the X-ray scattering.

In order to investigate in-plane anisotropy of magnetic form factor in the antiferromagnetic phase, the detwinned single crystal is used in the measurement. The magnetic structure factor and magnetic form factor are well explained by the spin densities consisting of $3d_{yz}$ electrons with a fraction of about 40~\% and the electrons in the other four $3d$ orbitals with each fraction of about 15~\%. Such anisotropic magnetic form factor is qualitatively consistent with the anisotropic magnetic behaviors observed in the antiferromagnetic phase of the parent compound of iron-based superconductor.

The $x=0.047$ sample exhibits high-temperature incommensurate (HT-ICM), commensurate (CM), and low-temperature incommensurate (LT-ICM) magnetic phases in order of decreasing temperature, whereas the $x=0.12$ sample exhibits only HT-ICM and LT-ICM phases. Here, the CM and LT-ICM phases are ferroelectric and weak-ferroelectric, respectively. Measurements conducted under zero field heating after various field-cooling conditions evidence that the microscopic mechanisms of the spin-driven ferroelectricity in the CM and LT-ICM phases are different: the magnetic chirality of Mn$^{4+}$ cycloidal spins plays a dominant role in the LT-ICM phase, whereas the magnetic exchange striction by the Mn$^{4+}$-Mn$^{3+}$ chain plays a dominant role in the CM phase. The polarization of YMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ flips upon CM to LT-ICM phase transition because the ferroelectricity driven by the magnetic chirality and the exchange striction provides opposite directions of polarization.

The quantitative agreement between density functional theory (DFT) calculations and momentum density experiment suggests that Fermi-liquid physics is restored in the overdoped regime. In particular the predicted FS topology is found to be in good accord with the corresponding experimental data. We find similar quantitative agreement between the measured 2D angular correlation of positron annihilation radiation (2D-ACAR) spectra and the DFT based computations. However, 2D-ACAR does not give such a clear signature of the FS in the extended momentum space in either the theory or the experiment.

Spin fluctuations and the local spin susceptibility in isovalently Zn-substituted La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$Cu$_{1-y}$Zn$_y$O$_4$ ($x=0.25$, $y\approx0.01$) are measured via inelastic neutron scattering techniques. As Zn$^{2+}$ is substituted onto the Cu$^{2+}$-sites, an anomalous enhancement of the local spin susceptibility $χ^{\prime\prime}(ω)$ appears due to the emergence of a commensurate antiferromagnetic excitation centered at wave vector \textbf{Q}$=(π, π, 0)$ that coexists with the known incommensurate SDW excitations at \textbf{Q}$_{HK}=(π\pmδ,π), (π,π\pmδ)$. Our results support a picture of Zn-induced antiferromagnetic (AF) fluctuations appearing through a local staggered polarization of Cu$^{2+}$-spins, and the simultaneous suppression of T$_c$ as AF fluctuations are slowed in proximity to Zn-impurities suggests the continued importance of high energy AF fluctuations at the far overdoped edge of superconductivity in the cuprates.

Neutron scattering experiments continue to improve our knowledge of spin fluctuations in layered cuprates, excitations that are symptomatic of the electronic correlations underlying high-temperature superconductivity. Time-of-flight spectrometers, together with new and varied single crystal samples, have provided a more complete characterization of the magnetic energy spectrum and its variation with carrier concentration. While the spin excitations appear anomalous in comparison with simple model systems, there is clear consistency among a variety of cuprate families. Focusing initially on hole-doped systems, we review the nature of the magnetic spectrum, and variations in magnetic spectral weight with do**. We consider connections with the phenomena of charge and spin stripe order, and the potential generality of such correlations as suggested by studies of magnetic-field and impurity induced order. We contrast the behavior of the hole-doped systems with the trends found in the electron-doped superconductors. Returning to hole-doped cuprates, studies of translation-symmetry-preserving magnetic order are discussed, along with efforts to explore new systems. We conclude with a discussion of future challenges.

We have performed powder neutron diffraction on the new superconductor, CeNi$_{0.8}$Bi$_2$ with a superconducting transtion temperature $T_\textrm{c} \sim$ 4.2 K. The structural parameters of this compound at room temperature are determined by Rietveld analysis. Below about 5 K, the clear magnetic Bragg peaks with propagation vector $q$=(0 0 0) are observed. The observed intensities of magnetic Bragg peaks can be explained by the magnetic structure that the two Ce moments in the unit cell are antiparallel along c axis. The magnetic Bragg peaks are observed in the superconducting state, indicating the coexistence of the antiferromagnetic ordering and the superconductivity in this compound. The intensity of magnetic Bragg peak monotonously increases with decreasing temperature below $T_\textrm{N}$ and does not exhibit apparent anomaly at $T_\textrm{c}$, obviously different from cases of heavy fermion superconductors in which the magnetic ordering and the superconductivity coexist, for example, Cd-doped CeCoIn$_5$. These results suggest that the 4$f$ electron of the Ce atom is not coupled with the superconducting carrier, and the magnetic ordering is almost independent of the superconductivity in CeNi$_{0.8}$Bi$_2$.

We performed inelastic neutron scattering on powder sample of the P-doped iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As0.65P0.35)2 with Tc = 30K, whose superconducting (SC) order parameter is expected to have line nodes. We have observed spin resonance at Q $\sim$ 1.2Å^{-1} and E=12 meV in the SC state. The resonance enhancement, which can be a measure of the area of sign reversal between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces (FSs), is comparable to those of other iron-based superconductors without line nodes. This fact indicates that the sign reversal between the FSs is still dominant in this system, and the line nodes should create only limited area of sign-reversal on a single FS. Hence the system can hold relatively high-Tc. Comparison with theoretical calculation indicates horizontal line nodes may be a candidate to reproduce the observation.

The peak energy at $Q=1.15$ Å$^{-1}$ corresponds to $5.2 k_B T_c$ in good agreement with the other values of resonance mode observed in the various iron-based superconductors, even in the high-$T_c$ cuprates. Although the phonon density of states has a peak at the same energy as the resonance mode in the present superconductor, the $Q$-dependence is consistent with the resonance being of predominately magnetic origin.

We report electrical resistivity measurements and neutron diffraction studies under magnetic fields of Bi$_{1.75}$Pb$_{0.35}$Sr$_{1.90}$Cu$_{0.91}$Fe$_{0.09}$O$_{6+y}$, in which hole carriers are overdoped. This compound shows short-range incommensurate magnetic correlation with incommensurability $δ=0.21$, whereas a Fe-free compound shows no magnetic correlation. Resistivity shows an up turn at low temperature in the form of $ln(1/T)$ and shows no superconductivity. We observe reduction of resistivity by applying magnetic fields (i.e., a negative magnetoresistive effect) at temperatures below the onset of short-range magnetic correlation. Application of magnetic fields also suppresses the Fe induced incommensurate magnetic correlation. We compare and contrast these observations with two different models: 1) stripe order, and 2) dilute magnetic moments in a metallic alloy, with associated Kondo behavior. The latter picture appears to be more relevant to the present results.

We present a comprehensive study of the temperature and do** dependence of the 500 meV peak observed at ${\bf q}=(π,0)$ in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments on $\rm La_2CuO_4$. The intensity of this peak persists above the Néel temperature (T$_{N}$=320 K), but decreases gradually with increasing temperature, reaching zero at around T=500 K. The peak energy decreases with temperature in close quantitative accord with the behavior of the two-magnon $\rm B_{1g}$ Raman peak in $\rm La_2CuO_4$, and with suitable rescaling, agrees with the Raman peak shifts in $\rm EuBa_2Cu_3O_6$ and $\rm K_2NiF_4$. The overall dispersion of this excitation in the Brillouin zone is found to be in agreement with theoretical calculations for a two-magnon excitation. Upon do**, the peak intensity decreases analogous to the Raman mode intensity and appears to track the do** dependence of the spin correlation length. Taken together, these observations strongly suggest that the 500 meV mode is magnetic in character and is likely a two-magnon excitation.

Inelastic polarized neutron scattering measurements at 10 K on a single crystal sample reveal two spin gaps, associated with in-plane and out-of-plane excitations. The polarization analysis of quasi-elastic scattering at 67 K shows in-plane spin fluctuations with XY symmetry, consistent with the disappearance of the in-plane gap above the Neel temperature T_N = 65 K. Our results suggest that jarosite is a promising candidate for studying the 2D XY universality class in magnetic systems.

Spin correlations in the overdoped region of Bi1.75Pb0.35Sr1.90CuO6+z have been explored with Fe-doped single crystals characterized by neutron scattering, muon-spin-rotation (muSR) spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Static incommensurate spin correlations induced by the Fe spins are revealed by elastic neutron scattering. The resultant incommensurability delta is unexpectedly large (~0.2 r.l.u.), as compared with delta ~ 1/8 in overdoped superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4. Intriguingly, the large delta in this overdoped region is close to the hole concentration p. This result is reminiscent of the delta ~ p trend observed in underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4; however, it is inconsistent with the saturation of delta in the latter compound in the overdoped regime. While our findings in Fe-doped Bi1.75Pb0.35Sr1.90CuO6+z support the commonality of incommensurate spin correlations in high-Tc cuprate superconductors, they also suggest that the magnetic response might be dominated by a distinct mechanism in the overdoped region.

It is found that, after cooling in electric fields down to the CM phase, the magnetic chirality is proportional to the electric polarization. Also we confirmed that the magnetic chirality can be switched by the polarity of the electric polarization in both the CM and LT-ICM phases. These facts suggest an intimate coupling between the magnetic chirality and the electric polarization. However, upon the transition from the CM to LT-ICM phase, the reduction of the electric polarization is not accompanied by any reduction of the magnetic chirality, implying that the CM and LT-ICM phases contain different mechanisms of the magnetoelectric coupling.

In hole-doped La$_{2}$CuO$_4$, we have deduced the "coherence temperature" $T_{coh}$ of quasi-particles on the Fermi arc above which the broadened leading edge position in angle-integrated photoemission spectra is shifted away from the Fermi level and the quasi-particle concept starts to lose its meaning. $T_{coh}$ is found to rapidly increase with hole do**, an opposite behavior to the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. The superconducting dome is thus located below both $T^*$ and $T_{coh}$, indicating that the superconductivity emerges out of the coherent Fermionic quasi-particles on the Fermi arc. $T_{coh}$ remains small in the underdoped region, indicating that incoherent charge carriers originating from the Fermi arc are responsible for the apparently metallic transport at high temperatures.

The field-response is approximately Curie-Weiss like in temperature and is largest for the highest do** investigated. Such behaviour is contrary to the canonical Fermi-liquid picture commonly associated with the overdoped cuprates and implies extensive heterogeneity in this region of the phase diagram. A possible explanation for the result lies in regions of staggered magnetization about dopant cations, analogous to what is argued to exist in underdoped systems.

The obtained magnetic structure has spiral components in both the low temperature ferroelectric phases that are magnetically commensurate and incommensurate, respectively. Among proposed microscopic theories for the magneto-electric coupling, our results are consistent with both the spin-current model that requires a magnetic transverse (cycloidal) spiral structure in order to induce a spontaneous electric polarization and the magneto-restriction model. Our results also explain why the electric polarization changes at the commensurate-to-incommensurate phase transition.

The observed charge transfer edge shift, along with the low dispersion of the first charge transfer excitation are attributed to the lattice motion being coupled to the electronic system. Upon dilute Ni substitution the incommensurability decreases for both types of SDM, while the volume fraction of the diagonal (parallel) SDM increases (decreases). Subsequent Ni do** induces a bulk three-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) order when x ~ Ni concentration. TN of such the AF order depends on x and seems to disappear at x ~ 0.1. These effects are approximately ascribed by a reduction of mobile holes, and by a transition from the parallel to the diagonal SDM induced by Ni.

We found that both the magnitude $Δ$* of the (small) pseudogap and the temperature \textit{T}* at which the pseudogap is opened increases with decreasing hole concentration, consistent with previous studies. On the other hand, the superconducting gap $Δ_{sc}$ was found to remain small for decreasing hole concentration. The results can be explained if the superconducting gap opens only on the Fermi arc around the nodal (0,0)-($π,π$) direction while the pseudogap opens around $\sim$($π$, 0).

Comparison of spectra integrated over the width of an antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone demonstrates that the magnetic scattering at intermediate energies, $20 \lesssim ω\lesssim 100$ meV, progressively decreases with over-do**. This strongly suggests that the magnetism is not related to Fermi surface nesting, but rather is associated with a decreasing volume fraction of (probably fluctuating) antiferromagnetic bubbles.

The dielectric measurements revealed Debye-like relaxations with Arrhenius activation energies of 80 and 240 meV that are assigned to Li$^+$ dipoles and the Li$^+$-Li$^+$ dipolar pairs, respectively. In the neutron scattering results, diffuse scattering ridges appear around the nuclear Bragg peaks below $\sim 150$ K and phonon line broadening features start to appear at even higher temperatures suggesting that polar nano-regions (PNR's) start to form at these temperatures. These results are supported by the dielectric data that reveal relaxor behavior starting at $\sim 200$ K on cooling. From analyses of the diffuse intensities, the displacements include a uniform phase shift of all of the atoms in addition to the atomic displacements corresponding to a polarization vector of the transverse optic soft ferroelectric mode, a finding that is analogous to that in the prototypical relaxor material Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$.

We report incommensurate diffuse (ICD) scattering appearing in the high-temperature-tetragonal (HTT) phase of La$_{2-x}$(Sr,Ba)$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with $0.07 \leq x \leq 0.20$ observed by the neutron diffraction technique. For all compositions, a sharp superlattice peak of the low-temperature-orthorhombic (LTO) structure is replaced by a pair of ICD peaks with the modulation vector parallel to the CuO$_6$ octahedral tilting direction, that is, the diagonal Cu-Cu direction of the CuO$_2$ plane, above the LTO-HTT transition temperature $T_s$. The temperature dependences of the incommensurability $δ$ for all samples scale approximately as $T/T_s$, while those of the integrated intensity of the ICD peaks scale as $(T-T_s)^{-1}$. These observations together with absence of ICD peaks in the non-superconducting $x=0.05$ sample evince a universal incommensurate lattice instability of hole-doped 214 cuprates in the superconducting regime.

Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$ has two inter-penetrating square Cu sublattices, one with square root 2 times the in-plane spacing of the other. Isotropic magnetic interactions between the two sublattices are completely frustrated. Quantum fluctuations resolve the intrinsic degeneracy in the ordering direction of the more weakly coupled sublattice in favor of collinear ordering. We present neutron scattering and magnetization studies of the magnetic structure when the Cu ions are substituted with Co. The Co spins create new magnetic interactions between the two sublattices. The ordering behavior of both Cu sublattices is retained largely unmodified. Between the phase transitions of the two sublattices spin-glass behavior is observed. Magnetization results show a strong enhancement to the ferromagnetic aspect of the magnetic structure. The combination of glassy behavior and large moments strongly suggest that the Co moments induce the formation of local canted states.

We have observed the charge transfer and molecular-orbital excitations which exhibit resonances at incident energies of $E_i= 8.992$ and 8.998 keV, respectively. From a comparison with previous results on undoped and optimally-doped samples, we determine that the charge-transfer excitation energy increases monotonically as do** increases. In addition, the $E_i$-dependences of the RIXS spectral weight and absorption spectrum exhibit no clear peak at $E_i = 8.998$ keV in contrast to results in the underdoped samples. The low-energy ($\leq 3$ eV) continuum excitation intensity has been studied utilizing the high energy resolution of 0.13 eV (FWHM). A comparison of the RIXS profiles at $(π~0)$ and $(π~π)$ indicates that the continuum intensity exists even at $(π~π)$ in the overdoped samples, whereas it has been reported only at $(0 ~0)$ and $(π~0)$ for the $x=0.17$ sample. Furthermore, we also found an additional excitation on top of the continuum intensity at the $(π~π)$ and $(π~0)$ positions.

The magnetic properties of the Zn-substituted overdoped high-$T_c$ superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$Cu$_{1-y}$Zn$_{y}$O$_{4}$ have been studied by magnetization measurements and neutron scattering. Magnetization measurements reveal that for Zn-free samples with $x \geq 0.22$ a Curie term is induced in the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility implying the existence of local paramagnetic moments. The induced Curie constant corresponds to a moment of 0.5 $μ_B$ per additional Sr$^{2+}$ ion that exceeds $x=0.22$. Zn-substitution in the overdoped \lsco also induces a Curie term that corresponds to 1.2 $μ_B$ per Zn$^{2+}$ ion, simultaneously suppressing $T_c$. The relationship between $T_c$ and the magnitude of the Curie term for Zn-free \lsco with $x \geq 0.22$ and for Zn-substituted \lsco with $x = 0.22$ are closely similar. This signifies a general competitive relationship between the superconductivity and the induced paramagnetic moment. Neutron scattering measurements show that Zn-substitution in overdoped \lsco anomalously enhances the inelastic magnetic scattering spectra around the $(π, π)$ position, peaking at $ω\sim 7$ meV. These facts are discussed on the basis of a "swiss-cheese" model of Zn-substituted systems as well as a microscopic phase separation scenario in the overdoped region indicated by muon-spin-relaxation measurements.

The Z-point phonon softening persists to low temperature, in contrast to the behavior observed in the superconducting $x=0.15$ compound, in which the Z-point phonon hardens below $T_c$. The diffuse scattering associated with the structural phase transition at 410 K appears at commensurate positions. These results highlight interesting differences between superconducting and insulating samples.

We present elastic neutron scattering results at high magnetic fields for Mg-doped CuGeO$_{3}$. For low magnesium concentrations, where a spin-Peierls phase is present, we find an enhancement of the long range antiferromagnetic order in the structural incommensurate phase induced by a high magnetic field. In the incommensurate phase, the Néel temperature increases with field leading to a gain in the magnetic Bragg peak intensity at low temperatures. We also find that the magnetic Bragg peaks remain commensurate even though the structure is incommensurate at high magnetic fields due to the formation of solitons. We interpret these results in terms of the solitons formed at high-magnetic fields effectively acting as doped impurities. Our results point to a strongly disordered ground state with the the antiferromagnetic order localized around impurity sites.

The relaxors Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PZN) and Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) have very similar properties based on the dielectric response around the critical temperature $T_{c}$ (defined by the structural transition under the application of an electric field). It has been widely believed that these materials are quite different below $T_{c}$ with the unit cell of PMN remaining cubic while in PZN the low temperature unit cell is rhombohedral in shape. However, this has been clarified by recent high-energy x-ray studies which have shown that PZN is rhombohedral only in the skin while the shape of the unit cell in the bulk is nearly cubic. In this study we have performed both neutron elastic and inelastic scattering to show that the temperature dependence of both the diffuse and phonon scattering in PZN and PMN is very similar. Both compounds show a nearly identical recovery of the soft optic mode and a broadening of the acoustic mode below $T_{c}$. The diffuse scattering in PZN is suggestive of an onset at the high temperature Burns temperature similar to that in PMN. In contrast to PMN, we observe a broadening of the Bragg peaks in both the longitudinal and transverse directions below $T_{c}$. We reconcile this additional broadening, not observed in PMN, in terms of structural inhomogeneity in PZN. Based on the strong similarities between PMN and PZN, we suggest that both materials belong to the same universality class and discuss the relaxor transition in terms of the three-dimensional Heisenberg model with cubic anisotropy in a random field.
