The potential energy surface (PES) of interlayer interaction of infinite twisted bilayer graphene is calculated for a set of commensurate moiré patterns using the registry-dependent Kolmogorov-Crespi empirical potential. The calculated PESs have the same shape for all considered moiré patterns with the unit cell size of the PES which is inversely related to the unit cell size of the moiré pattern. The amplitude of PES corrugations is found to decrease exponentially upon increasing the size of the moiré pattern unit cell. An analytical expression for such a PES including the first Fourier harmonics compatible with the symmetries of both layers is derived. It is shown that the calculated PESs can be approximated by the derived expression with the accuracy within 1%. This means that different physical properties associated with relative in-plane motion of graphene layers are interrelated and can be expressed analytically as functions of the amplitude of PES corrugations. In this way, we obtain the shear mode frequency, shear modulus, shear strength and barrier for relative rotation of the commensurate twisted layers to a fully incommensurate state for the considered moiré patterns. This barrier may possibly lead to the macroscopic robust superlubricity for twisted graphene bilayer with a commensurate moiré pattern. The conclusions made should be valid for diverse 2D systems of twisted commensurate layers.

Since fullerene formation occurs under conditions where direct observation of atomic-scale reactions is not possible, modeling is the only way to reveal atomistic mechanisms which can lead to selection of abundant fullerene isomers (like C60-Ih). In the present paper we review the results obtained for different atomistic mechanisms by various modeling techniques. Although it seems that atomic-scale processes related to odd fullerenes (such as growth by consecutive insertions of single carbon atoms and rearrangements of the sp$^2$ structure promoted by extra sp atoms) provide the main contribution to selection of abundant isomers, at the moment there is no conclusive evidence in favor of any particular atomistic mechanism. Thus, the following multiscale modeling strategy to solve the mystery of the high yield of abundant fullerene isomers is suggested. On the one hand, sets of reactions between fullerene isomers can be described using theoretical graph techniques. On the other hand, reaction schemes can be revealed by classical molecular dynamics simulations with subsequent refinement of the activation barriers by ab initio calculations. Based on the reaction sets with the reaction probabilities derived in this way, the different atomistic mechanisms of abundant fullerene isomer selection can be compared by kinetic models.

We propose a hypothesis that the potential energy surface (PES) of interlayer interaction in diverse 2D materials can be universally described by the first spatial Fourier harmonics. This statement (checked previously for the interactions between graphene and hexagonal boron nitride layers in different combinations) is verified in the present paper for the case of hydrofluorinated graphene (HFG) bilayer with hydrogen bonding between fluorine and hydrogen at the interlayer interface. The PES for HFG bilayer is obtained through density functional theory calculations with van der Waals corrections. An analytical expression based on the first Fourier harmonics describing the PES which corresponds to the symmetry of HFG layers is derived. It is found that the calculated PES can be described by the first Fourier harmonics with the accuracy of 3\% relative to the PES corrugation. The shear mode frequency, shear modulus and barrier for relative rotation of the layers to incommensurate states of HFG bilayer are estimated. Additionally it is shown that HFG bilayer is stable relative to the formation of HF molecules as a result of chemical reactions between the layers.

Structures of stable states of the corresponding nanoscrolls prepared by rolling single-layer and bilayer rectangular nanoribbons are obtained based on the analytical model and numerical calculations. The lengths of nanoribbons for which stable and energetically favorable nanoscrolls are possible are determined. Barriers to rolling of single-layer and bilayer nanoribbons into nanoscrolls and barriers to nanoscroll unrolling are calculated. Based on the calculated barriers nanoscroll lifetimes in the stable state are estimated. Elastic constants for bending of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride layers used in the model are found by density functional theory calculations.

The interaction and tunneling conductance between oppositely located ends of coaxial carbon nanotubes are studied by the example of two (11,11) nanotubes with open ends terminated by hydrogen atoms. The Green function formalism is applied to determine the tunneling current through the nanotube ends as a function of the distance between the ends, relative orientation of the nanotubes and voltage applied. The energy favorable configuration of the coaxial nanotubes is obtained by the analysis of their interaction energy at different distances between the nanotube ends and angles of their relative rotation. Using these calculations, a general scheme of the force sensor based on the interaction between ends of coaxial nanotubes is proposed and the relation between the tunneling conductance and measured force is established for the considered nanotubes. The operational characteristics of this device as a magnetic field sensor based on measurements of the magnetic force acting on the coaxial nanotubes filled with magnetic endofullerenes are estimated.

Structural, energetic and tribological characteristics of double-layer graphene with commensurate and incommensurate krypton spacers of nearly monolayer coverage are studied within the van der Waals-corrected density functional theory. It is shown that when the spacer is in the commensurate phase, the graphene layers have the AA stacking. For this phase, the barriers to relative in-plane translational and rotational motion and the shear mode frequency of the graphene layers are calculated. For the incommensurate phase, both of the barriers are found to be negligibly small. A considerable change of tunneling conductance between the graphene layers separated by the commensurate krypton spacer at their relative subangstrom displacement is revealed by the use of the Bardeen method. The possibility of nanoelectromechanical systems based on the studied tribological and electronic properties of the considered heterostructures is discussed.

A new concept of an electromechanical nanodynamometer based on the relative displacement of layers of bilayer graphene is proposed. In this nanodynamometer, force acting on one of the graphene layers causes the relative displacement of this layer and related change of conductance between the layers. Such a force can be determined by measurements of the tunneling conductance between the layers. Dependences of the interlayer interaction energy and the conductance between the graphene layers on their relative position are calculated within the first-principles approach corrected for van der Waals interactions and the Bardeen method, respectively. The characteristics of the nanodynamometer are determined and its possible applications are discussed.

The structures of the smallest C20 and Fe@C20 fullerenes are computed using the spin-polarized density functional theory. Significant changes of the barriers for motion along the nanotube axis and rotation of these fullerenes inside the (8,8) nanotube are found at the Peierls transition. It is shown that the coefficients of translational and rotational diffusions of these fullerenes inside the nanotube change by several orders of magnitude. The possibility of inverse orientational melting, i.e. with a decrease of temperature, for the systems under consideration is predicted.

We have analyzed the energetics of decay of the X^- trion (exciton + electron) on the assumption that the exciton and trion are independent excitations of a single two-dimensional semiconducting quantum well. For the first time, it has been shown that in filling a well with electrons from a selective donor-doped matrix, the binding energy of the trion (of the electron with the exciton) increases linearly with a shift of the Fermi level into the depth of the c band. This agrees with the well-known experimental data on the low-temperature radiative decay (photoluminescence) of trions in the heterostructures ZnSe/Zn_0.89Mg_0.11S_0.18Se_0.82 and CdTe/Cd_0.7Mg_0.3Te.

Expressions for dependences of the pre-exponential factor σ_3 and the thermal activation energy ε_3 of hop** electric conductivity of holes via boron atoms on the boron atom concentration N and the compensation ratio K are obtained in the quasiclassical approximation. It is assumed that the acceptors (boron atoms) in charge states (0) and (-1) and the donors that compensate them in the charge state (+1) form a nonstoichiometric simple cubic lattice with translational period R_h = [(1 + K)N]^{-1/3} within the crystalline matrix. A hop** event occurs only over the distance R_h at a thermally activated accidental coincidence of the acceptor levels in charge states (0) and (-1). Donors block the fraction K/(1 - K) of impurity lattice sites. The hole hop** conductivity is averaged over all possible orientations of the lattice with respect to the external electric field direction. It is supposed that an acceptor band is formed by Gaussian fluctuations of the potential energy of boron atoms in charge state (-1) due to Coulomb interaction only between the ions at distance R_h. The shift of the acceptor band towards the top of the valence band with increasing N due to screening (in the Debye--Hückel approximation) of the impurity ions by holes hop** via acceptor states was taken into account. The calculated values of σ_3(N) and ε_3(N) for K \approx 0.25 agree well with known experimental data at the insulator side of the insulator--metal phase transition. The calculation is carried out at a temperature two times lower than the transition temperature from hole transport in v-band of diamond to hop** conductance via boron atoms.

The dependence of the interwall conductance on distance between walls and relative positions of walls are calculated at the low voltage by Bardeen method for (n,n)@(2n,2n) double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) with n = 5, 6, ..., 10. The conductance decreases by 6 orders of magnitude when the interwall distance is doubled.
