Semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) combine strong light-matter interaction with good chemical stability and scalable fabrication techniques, and are thus excellent prospects for optoelectronic, photonic and light-harvesting applications. Controllable fabrication of high-quality TMD monolayers with low defect content is still challenging and hinders their adoption for technological application. The optical properties of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown monolayer MoS$_2$ are largely influenced by the stoichiometry during CVD by controlled sulfurization of molybdenum (Mo) precursors. Here, we investigate how the sulfur concentration influences the sample morphology and, both globally and locally, their optical response. We confirm that samples grown under a Mo:S > 1:2 stoichiometric ratio have regular morphology facilitated by a moderate coverage of triangular monocrystals with excellent optical response. Our data-driven approach correlates growth conditions with crystal morphology and its optical response, providing a practical and necessary pathway to address the challenges towards the controlled synthesis of 2D TMDs and their alloys with desired optical and electronic properties.

A major challenge in the investigation of all 2D materials is the development of synthesis protocols and tools which would enable their large-scale production and effective manipulation. The same holds for borophene, where experiments are still largely limited to in situ characterizations of small-area samples. In contrast, our work is based on millimeter-sized borophene sheets, synthesized on an Ir(111) surface in ultrahigh vacuum. Besides high-quality macroscopic synthesis, as confirmed by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), we also demonstrate a successful transfer of borophene from Ir to a Si wafer via electrochemical delamination process. Comparative Raman spectroscopy, in combination with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, proved that borophene's crystal structure has been preserved in the transfer. Our results demonstrate successful growth and manipulation of large-scale, single-layer borophene sheets with minor defects and ambient stability, thus expediting borophene implementation into more complex systems and devices.

The two-dimensional semiconductor MoS2 in its mono- and few-layer form is expected to have a significant exciton binding energy of several 100 meV, leading to the consensus that excitons are the primary photoexcited species. Nevertheless, even single layers show a strong photovoltaic effect and work as the active material in high sensitivity photodetectors, thus indicating efficient charge carrier photogeneration (CPG). Here we use continuous wave photomodulation spectroscopy to identify the optical signature of long-lived charge carriers and femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy to follow the CPG dynamics. We find that intitial photoexcitation yields a branching between excitons and charge carriers, followed by excitation energy dependent hot exciton dissociation as an additional CPG mechanism. Based on these findings, we make simple suggestions for the design of more efficient MoS2 photovoltaic and photodetector devices.

Ferromagnetism and superconductivity are antagonistic phenomena. Their coexistence implies either a modulated ferromagnetic order parameter on a lengthscale shorter than the superconducting coherence length or a weak exchange coupling between the itinerant superconducting electrons and the localized ordered spins. In some iron based pnictide superconductors the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity has been clearly demonstrated. The nature of the coexistence, however, remains elusive since no clear understanding of the spin structure in the superconducting state has been reached and the reports on the coupling strength are controversial. We show, by a direct optical pump-probe experiment, that the coupling is weak, since the transfer of the excess energy from the itinerant electrons to ordered localized spins is much slower than the electron-phonon relaxation, implying the coexistence without the short-lengthscale ferromagnetic order parameter modulation. Remarkably, the polarization analysis of the coherently excited spin wave response points towards a simple ferromagnetic ordering of spins with two distinct types of ferromagnetic domains.

We systematically investigate temperature- and spectrally-dependent optical reflectivity dynamics in AAs$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$, (A=Ba, Sr and Eu), iron-based superconductors parent spin-density-wave (SDW) compounds. Two different relaxation processes are identified. The behavior of the slower process, which is strongly sensitive to the magneto-structural transition, is analyzed in the framework of the relaxation-bottleneck model involving magnons. The results are compared to recent time resolved angular photoemission results (TR-ARPES) and possible alternative assignment of the slower relaxation to the magneto-structural order parameter relaxation is discussed.
