We present spin-resolved spectroscopy of the accreting white dwarf binary V455 And. With a suggested spin period of only 67s, it has one of the fastest spinning white dwarfs known. To study the spectral variability on the spin period of the white dwarf, we observed V455 And with 2s integration times, which is significantly shorter than the spin rate of the white dwarf. To achieve this cadence, we used the blue arm of the ISIS spectrograph at the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope, equipped with an electron multiplying CCD (EMCCD). Strong coherent signals were detected in our time series, which lead to a robust determination of the spin period of the white dwarf (Pspin=67.619 +/- 0.002 s). Folding the spectra on the white dwarf spin period uncovered very complex emission line variations in Hgamma, He I 4472 and He II 4686. We attribute the observed spin phase dependence of the emission line shape to the presence of magnetically controlled accretion onto the white dwarf via accretion curtains, consistent with an intermediate polar type system. We are, however, not aware of any specific model that can quantitatively explain the complex velocity variations we detect in our observations. The orbital variations in the spectral lines indicate that the accretion disc of V455 And is rather structureless, contrary to the disc of the prototype of the intermediate polars, DQ Her. This work demonstrates the potential of electron multiplying CCDs to observe faint targets at high cadence, as readout noise would make such a study impossible with conventional CCDs.

The predicted orbital period histogram of an sdB population is bimodal with a peak at short (< 10 days) and long (> 250 days) periods. Observationally, there are many short-period sdB systems known, but only very few long-period sdB binaries are identified. As these predictions are based on poorly understood binary interaction processes, it is of prime importance to confront the predictions to observational data. In this contribution we aim to determine the absolute dimensions of the long-period sdB+MS binary system PG1104+243. High-resolution spectroscopy time-series were obtained with HERMES at the Mercator telescope at La Palma, and analyzed to obtain radial velocities of both components. Photometry from the literature was used to construct the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the binary. Atmosphere models were used to fit this SED and determine the surface gravity and temperature of both components. The gravitational redshift provided an independent confirmation of the surface gravity of the sdB component. An orbital period of 753 +- 3 d and a mass ratio of q = 0.637 +- 0.015 were found from the RV-curves. The sdB component has an effective temperature of Teff = 33500 +- 1200 K and a surface gravity of logg = 5.84 +- 0.08 dex, while the cool companion is found to be a G-type star with Teff = 5930 +- 160 K and logg = 4.29 +- 0.05 dex. Assuming a canonical mass of Msdb = 0.47 Msun, the MS component has a mass of 0.74 +- 0.07 Msun, and its Teff corresponds to what is expected for a terminal age main-sequence star with sub-solar metalicity. PG1104+243 is the first long-period sdB binary in which accurate physical parameters of both components could be determined, and the first sdB binary in which the gravitational redshift is measured. Furthermore, PG1104+243 is the first sdB+MS system that shows consistent evidence for being formed through stable Roche-lobe overflow.

We report on the discovery of an infrared emission band in the Spitzer spectrum of the S-type AGB star NP Aurigae that is caused by TiO molecules in the circumstellar environment. We modelled the observed emission to derive the temperature of the TiO molecules (\approx 600 K), an upper limit on the column density (\approx 10^17.25 cm^{-2}) and a lower limit on the spatial extent of the layer that contains these molecules. (\approx 4.6 stellar radii). This is the first time that this TiO emission band is observed. A search for similar emission features in the sample of S-type stars yielded two additional candidates. However, owing to the additional dust emission, the identification is less stringent. By comparing the stellar characteristics of NP Aur to those of the other stars in our sample, we find that all stars with TiO emission show large-amplitude pulsations, s-process enrichment, and a low C/O ratio. These characteristics might be necessary requirements for a star to show TiO in emission, but they are not sufficient.

We introduce the first g-mode pulsator found to reside on the classical blue horizontal branch. One year of Kepler observations of KIC 1718290 reveals a rich spectrum of low-amplitude modes with periods between one and twelve hours, most of which follow a regular spacing of 276.3 s. This mode structure strongly resembles that of the V1093Her pulsators, with only a slight shift towards longer periods. Our spectroscopy, however, reveals KIC 1718290 to be quite distinct from the sdB stars that show V1093Her pulsations, which all have surface gravities higher than log g = 5.1 and helium abundances depleted by at least an order of magnitude relative to the solar composition. We find that KIC1718290 has T_eff = 22 100K, log g = 4.72, and a super-solar helium abundance (log N(He)/N(H) = -0.45). This places it well above the extreme horizontal branch, and rather on the very blue end of the classical horizontal branch, where shell hydrogen burning is present. We conclude that KIC 1718290 must have suffered extreme mass loss during its first giant stage, but not sufficient to reach the extreme horizontal branch.

Recent studies have shown that stellar chromospheric activity, and its effect on convective energy transport in the envelope, is most likely the cause of significant radius and temperature discrepancies between theoretical evolution models and observations. We aim to determine absolute dimensions and abundances for the solar-type detached eclipsing binary EF Aqr, and to perform a detailed comparison with results from recent stellar evolutionary models. uvby-beta standard photometry was obtained with the Stromgren Automatic Telescope. The broadening function formalism was applied on spectra observed with HERMES at the Mercator telescope in La Palma, to obtain radial velocity curves. Masses and radii with a precision of 0.6% and 1.0% respectively have been established for both components of EF Aqr. The active 0.956 M_sol secondary shows star spots and strong Ca II H and K emission lines. The 1.224 M_sol primary shows signs of activity as well, but at a lower level. An [Fe/H] abundance of 0.00+-0.10 is derived with similar abundances for Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Co, and Ni. Solar calibrated evolutionary models such as Yonsei-Yale, Victoria-Regina and BaSTI isochrones and evolutionary tracks are unable to reproduce EF Aqr, especially for the secondary, which is 9% larger and 400 K cooler than predicted. Models adopting significantly lower mixing length parameters l/H_p remove these discrepancies, as seen in other solar type binaries. For the observed metallicity, Granada models with a mixing length of l/H_p=1.30 (primary) and 1.05 (secondary) reproduce both components at a common age of 1.5+-0.6 Gyr. Observations of EF Aqr suggests that magnetic activity, and its effect on envelope convection, is likely to be the cause of discrepancies in both radius and temperature, which can be removed by adjusting the mixing length parameter of the models downwards.

Comparisons with (i) the t - t' - J model, for which the carrier is a spinless vacancy, and (ii) a strong-coupling version of the three-band Emery model, for which the carrier is a S = 1/2 hole moving on the Oxygen sublattice, have demonstrated that if one wishes to describe the quasiparticle throughout the entire first Brillouin zone the three-band model is superior. Here we present a new variational wave func- tion for a single Oxygen hole in the three-band model: it utilizes a classical representation of the antiferromagnetically ordered Cu-spin background but explicitly includes the quantum fluctuations of the lowest energy doublet of the Cu-O-Cu bond containing the Oxygen hole. We find that this wave function leads to a quasiparticle dispersion for physical exchange and hop** parame- ters that is in excellent agreement with the measured ARPES data. We also obtain the average spin of the Oxygen hole, and thus deduce that this spin is only quenched to zero at certain wave vectors, hel** to explain the inadequacy of the t - t' - J model to match the experimentally observed disper- sion relation everywhere in the first Brillouin zone.

Recent angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) results for the insulating cuprate ${\rm Sr_2 Cu O_2 Cl_2}$ have provided the first experimental data which can be directly compared to the (theoretically) well--studied problem of a single hole propagating in an antiferromagnet. The ARPES results reported a small bandwidth, providing evidence for the existence of strong correlations in the cuprates. However, in the same experiment some discrepancies with the familiar 2D ${\rm t-J}$ model were also observed. Here we discuss a comparison between the ARPES results and the quasiparticle dispersion of both (i) the ${\rm t-t'-J}$ Hamiltonian and (ii) the three--band Hubbard model in the strong--coupling limit. Both model Hamiltonians show that the experimentally observed one--hole band structure can be approximately reproduced using reasonable values for ${\rm t'}$, or the direct oxygen hop** amplitude ${\rm t_{pp}}$.

The magnetic phase diagrams, and other physical characteristics, of the hole- doped {\em La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$} and electron-doped {\em Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$ CuO$_4$} high-temperature superconductors are profoundly different. Starting with the $t-t^{\prime}-J$ model, the spin distortions and the spatial distri- bution of carriers for the multiply-doped systems will be related to the diffe- rent ground states' single-hole quasiparticles. The low do** limit of the hole-doped material corresponds to $\vec k = (π/2,π/2)$ quasiparticles, states that generate so-called Shraiman-Siggia long-ranged dipolar spin distor- tions via backflow. We propose that for the electron-doped materials the single- hole ground state corresponds to $\vec k = (π,0)$ quasiparticles; we show that the spin distortions generated by such carriers are short-ranged. Then, we demonstrate the effect of this single-carrier difference in many-carrier ground states via exact diagonalization results by evaluating $S(\vec q)$ for up to 4 carriers in small clusters. Also, the different single-carrier quasiparticles generate important differences in the spatial distributions: for the hole-doped material the quasiparticles tend to stay far apart from one another, whereas for the electron-doped material we find tendencies consistent with the clustering of carriers, and possibly of low-energy fluctuations into an electronic phase separated state. Lastly, we propose the extrapolation of an approach based on the $t-t^{\prime}-J$ model to the hole-doped 123 system.

We have calculated S(q) and the single particle distribution function <n(q)> for N holes in the t - J model on a non--square sqrt{8} X sqrt{32} 16--site lattice with periodic boundary conditions; we justify the use of this lattice in compariosn to those of having the full square symmetry of the bulk. This new cluster has a high density of vec k points along the diagonal of reciprocal space, viz. along k = (k,k). The results clearly demonstrate that when the single hole problem has a ground state with a system momentum of vec k = (pi/2,pi/2), the resulting ground state for N holes involves a shift of the peak of the system's structure factor away from the antiferromagnetic state. This shift effectively increases continuously with N. When the single hole problem has a ground state with a momentum that is not equal to k = (pi/2,pi/2), then the above--mentioned incommensurability for N holes is not found. The results for the incommensurate ground states can be understood in terms of rigid--band filling: the effective occupation of the single hole k = (pi/2,pi/2) states is demonstrated by the evaluation of the single particle momentum distribution function <n(q)>. Unlike many previous studies, we show that for the many hole ground state the occupied momentum states are indeed k = (+/- pi/2,+/- pi/2) states.
