On the smoothability problem with rational coefficients
Authors:

Abstract:
We consider the problem of smoothing algebraic cycles with rational coefficients on smooth projective complex varieties up to homological equivalence. We show that a solution to this problem would be incompatible with the validity of the Hartshorne conjecture on complete intersections in projective space. We also solve unconditionally a symplectic variant of this problem.

Understanding the interplay between bright and dark exciton states is crucial for deciphering the luminescence properties of low-dimensional materials. The origin of the outstanding brightness of lead halide perovskites remains elusive. Here, we analyse temperature-dependent time-resolved photoluminescence to investigate the population mixing between bright and dark exciton sublevels in individual CsPbBr$_3$ nanocrystals in the intermediate confinement regime. We extract bright and dark exciton decay rates, and show quantitatively that the decay dynamics can only be reproduced with second-order phonon transitions. Furthermore, we find that any exciton sublevel ordering is compatible with the most likely population transfer mechanism. The remarkable brightness of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals rather stems from a reduced asymmetry between bright-to-dark and dark-to-bright conversion originating from the peculiar second-order phonon-assisted transitions that freeze bright-dark conversion at low temperature together with the very fast radiative recombination and favourable degeneracy of the bright exciton state.

We report on the photo-luminescence of pairs of organic color centers in single-wall carbon nanotubes grafted with 3,5 dichlorobenzene. Using various techniques such as intensity correlations, super-localization microscopy or luminescence excitation spectroscopy, we distinguish two pairs of color centers grafted on the same nanotube; the distance between the pairs is on the order of several hundreds of nanometers. In contrast, by studying the strong temporal correlations in the spectral diffusion in the framework of photo-induced Stark effect, we can estimate the distance within each pair to be of the order of a few nanometers. Finally, the electronic population dynamics is investigated using time-resolved luminescence and saturation measurements, showing a biexponential decay with a fast overall recombination (compatible with a fast population transfer between the color centers within a pair) and a weak delayed repopulation of the traps possibly due to the diffusion of excitons along the tube axis.

Our main result is that all cycles (of any dimension) on a smooth projective variety are flat pushforwards of Chern classes. In the case of abelian varieties, one can even restrict to smooth pushforwards of Chern classes.

Under high electrical current, some materials can emit electromagnetic radiation beyond incandescence. This phenomenon, referred to as electroluminescence, leads to the efficient emission of visible photons and is the basis of domestic lighting devices (e.g., light-emitting diodes). In principle, electroluminescence can lead to mid-infrared (mid-IR) emission of confined light-matter excitations called phonon-polaritons, resulting from the coupling of photons with crystal lattice vibrations (optical phonons). In particular, phonon-polaritons arising in the van der Waals crystal hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) exhibit hyperbolic dispersion, which enhances light-matter coupling. For this reason, electroluminescence of hyperbolic phonon-polaritons (HPhPs) has been proposed as an explanation for the peculiar radiative energy transfer within hBN-encapsulated graphene transistors. However, since HPhPs are confined, they are inaccessible in the far-field, so that any hint of electroluminescence is only based on indirect electronic signatures and needs to be confirmed by direct observation. Here, we demonstrate far-field mid-IR (λ = 6.5 μm) electroluminescence of HPhPs excited by strongly biased high-mobility graphene within a van der Waals heterostructure, and we quantify the associated radiative energy transfer through the material. The presence of HPhPs is revealed via far-field mid-IR spectroscopy due to their elastic scattering at discontinuities in the heterostructure. The associated radiative flux is quantified by mid-IR pyrometry of the substrate receiving the energy. This radiative energy transfer is shown to be reduced in hBN with nanoscale inhomogeneities, demonstrating the central role of the electromagnetic environment in this process.

Electroluminescence, a non-thermal radiative process, is ubiquitous in semi-conductors and insulators but fundamentally precluded in metals. We show here that this restriction can be circumvented in high-quality graphene. By investigating the radiative emission of semi-metallic graphene field-effect transistors over a broad spectral range, spanning the near- and mid-infrared, we demonstrate direct far-field electroluminescence from hBN-encapsulated graphene in the mid-infrared under large bias in ambient conditions. Through a series of test experiments ruling out its incandescence origin, we determine that the electroluminescent signal results from the electrical pum** produced by interband tunneling. We show that the mid-infrared electroluminescence is spectrally shaped by a natural quarter-wave resonance of the heterostructure. This work invites a reassessment of the use of metals and semi-metals as non-equilibrium light emitters, and the exploration of their intriguing specificities in terms of carrier injection and relaxation, as well as emission tunability and switching speed.

We report on the coupling of a reconfigurable high Q fiber micro-cavity to an organic color center grafted to a carbon nanotube for telecom wavelength emission of single photons in the Purcell regime. Using three complementary approaches we assess various figures of merit of this tunable single photon source and of the cavity quantum electrodynamical effects : the brightening of the emitter is obtained by comparison of the count rates of the very same emitter in free-space and cavity coupled regimes. We demonstrate a fiber coupled single-photon output rate up to 20 MHz at 1275~nm. Using time-resolved and saturation measurements, we determine independently the radiative quantum yield and the Purcell factor of the system with values up to 30 for the smallest mode volumes. Finally, we take advantage of the tuning capability of the cavity to measure the spectral profile of the brightness of the source which gives access to the vacuum Rabi splitting $g$ with values up to $25 \; μ$eV.

Low-frequency 1/f noise in electronics is a conductance fluctuation, that has been expressed in terms of a mobility "$α$-noise" by Hooge and Kleinpenning. Understanding this noise in graphene is a key towards high-performance electronics. Early investigations in diffusive graphene have pointed out a deviation from the standard Hooge formula, with a modified expression where the free-carrier density is substituted by a constant density $n_Δ\sim10^{12}\;\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$. We investigate hBN-encapsulated graphene transistors where high mobility gives rise to the non-linear velocity-saturation regime. In this regime, the $α$-noise is accounted for by substituting conductance by differential conductance $G$, ressulting in a bell-shape dependence of flicker noise with bias voltage $V$. The same analysis holds at larger bias in the Zener regime, with two main differences: the first one is a strong enhancement of the Hooge parameter reflecting the hundred-times larger coupling of interband excitations to the hyperbolic phonon-polariton (HPhP) modes of the mid-infrared Reststrahlen (RS) bands of hBN. The second is an exponential suppression of this coupling at large fields, which we attribute to decoherence effects. We also show that the HPhP bands control the amplitude of flicker noise according to the graphene-hBN thermal coupling estimated with microwave noise thermometry. The phenomenology of $α$-noise in graphene supports a quantum-coherent bremsstrahlung interpretation of flicker noise.

Here, we report on a cryogenic-temperature study of the photoluminescence of single CsPbBr$_3$ NCs in the intermediate quantum confinement regime. We reveal the size-dependence of the spectral features observed: the bright-triplet exciton energy splittings, the trion and biexciton binding energies as well as the optical phonon replica spectrum. In addition, we show that bright triplet energy splittings are consistent with a pure exchange model and that the variety of polarisation properties and spectra recorded can be rationalised simply by considering the orientation of the emitting dipoles and the populations of the emitting states.

Strong electric field annihilation by particle-antiparticle pair creation, also known as the Schwinger effect, is a non-perturbative prediction of quantum electrodynamics. Its experimental demonstration remains elusive, as threshold electric fields are extremely strong and beyond current reach. Here, we propose a mesoscopic variant of the Schwinger effect in graphene, which hosts Dirac fermions with an approximate electron-hole symmetry. Using transport measurements, we report on universal 1d-Schwinger conductance at the pinchoff of ballistic graphene transistors. Strong pinchoff electric fields are concentrated within approximately 1 $μ$m of the transistor's drain, and induce Schwinger electron-hole pair creation at saturation. This effect precedes a collective instability toward an ohmic Zener regime, which is rejected at twice the pinchoff voltage in long devices. These observations advance our understanding of current saturation limits in ballistic graphene and provide a direction for further quantum electrodynamic experiments in the laboratory.

We prove that a hyper-Kähler fourfold satisfying a mild topological assumption is of K3$^{[2]}$ deformation type. This proves in particular a conjecture of O'Grady stating that hyper-Kähler fourfolds of K3$^{[2]}$ numerical type are of K3$^{[2]}$ deformation type. Our topological assumption concerns the existence of two integral degree-2 cohomology classes satisfying certain numerical intersection conditions.
There are two main ingredients in the proof. We first prove a topological version of the statement, by showing that our topological assumption forces the Betti numbers, the Fujiki constant, and the Huybrechts-Riemann-Roch polynomial of the hyper-Kähler fourfold to be the same as those of K3$^{[2]}$ hyper-Kähler fourfolds. The key part of the article is then to prove the hyper-Kähler SYZ conjecture for hyper-Kähler fourfolds for divisor classes satisfying the numerical condition mentioned above.

In view of the extensive use of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in 2D material electronics, it becomes important to refine its dielectric characterization in terms of low-field permittivity and high-field strength and conductivity up to the breakdown voltage. The present study aims at filling this gap using DC and RF transport in two Au-hBN-Au capacitor series of variable thickness in the 10--100 nm range, made of large high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) crystals and a polymer derivative ceramics (PDC) crystals. We deduce an out-of-plane low field dielectric constant $ε_\parallel=3.4\pm0.2$ consistent with the theoretical prediction of Ohba et al., that narrows down the generally accepted window $ε_\parallel=3$--$4$. The DC-current leakage at high-field is found to obey the Frenkel-Pool law for thermally-activated trap-assisted electron transport with a dynamic dielectric constant $ε_\parallel\simeq3.1$ and a trap energy $Φ_B\simeq1.3\;\mathrm{eV}$, that is comparable with standard technologically relevant dielectrics.

We investigate the Lefschetz standard conjecture for degree $2$ cohomology of hyper-Kähler manifolds admitting a covering by Lagrangian subvarieties. In the case of a Lagrangian fibration, we show that the Lefschetz standard conjecture is implied by the SYZ conjecture characterizing classes of divisors associated with Lagrangian fibration. In dimension $4$, we consider the more general case of a Lagrangian covered fourfold $X$, and prove the Lefschetz standard conjecture in degree $2$, assuming $ρ(X)=1$ and $X$ is general in moduli. Finally we discuss various links between Lefschetz cycles and the study of the rational equivalence of points and Bloch-Beilinson type filtrations, giving a general interpretation of a recent intriguing result of Marian and Zhao.

Engineering of cooling mechanism is of primary importance for the development of nanoelectronics. Whereas radiation cooling is rather inefficient in nowadays electronic devices, the strong anisotropy of 2D materials allows for enhanced efficiency because their hyperbolic electromagnetic dispersion near phonon resonances allows them to sustain much larger ($\sim 10^5$) number of radiating channels. In this review, we address radiation cooling in 2D materials, specifically graphene hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructures. We present the hyperbolic dispersion of electromagnetic waves due to anisotropy, and describe how the spontaneous fluctuations of current in a 2D electronic channel can radiate thermal energy in its hyperbolic surrounding medium. We show that both the regime of (i) thermal current fluctuations and (ii) out-of-equilibrium current fluctuations can be described within the framework of transmission line theory leading to (i) superPlanckian thermal emission and (ii) electroluminescent cooling. We discuss a recent experimental investigation on graphene-on-hBN transistors using electronic noise thermometry. In a high mobility semimetal like graphene at large bias, a steady-state out-of-equilibrium situation is caused by the constant Zener tunneling of electrons opening a route for electroluminescence of hyperbolic electromagnetic modes. Experiments reveal that, compared to superPlanckian thermal emission, electroluminescence cooling is particularly prominent once the Zener tunneling regime is reached: observed cooling powers are nine orders of magnitude larger than in conventional LEDs.

In fact, the (usually unintentional) localization of excitons in local potential wells leads to nearly 0D behaviors such as photon antibunching, spectral diffusion, inhomogeneous broadening, etc. Here, we present an hyperspectral imaging of this exciton self-localization effect at the single nanotube level using a super-resolved optical microscopy approach. We report on the statistical distribution of the traps localization, depth and width. We use a quasi-resonant photoluminescence excitation approach to probe the confined quantum states. Numerical simulations of the quantum states and exciton diffusion show that the excitonic states are deeply modified by the interface disorder inducing a remarkable discretization of the excitonic absorption spectrum and a quenching of the free 1D exciton absorption.

In the field of condensed matter, graphene plays a central role as an emerging material for nanoelectronics. Nevertheless, graphene is a semimetal, which constitutes a severe limitation for some future applications. Therefore, a lot of efforts are being made to develop semiconductor materials whose structure is compatible with the graphene lattice. In this perspective, little pieces of graphene represent a promising alternative. In particular, their electronic, optical and spin properties can be in principle controlled by designing their size, shape and edges. As an example, graphene nanoribbons with zigzag edges have localized spin polarized states. Likewise, singlet-triplet energy splitting can be chosen by designing the structure of graphene quantum dots. Moreover, bottom-up molecular synthesis put these potentialities at our fingertips. Here, we report on a single emitter study that directly addresses the intrinsic properties of a single graphene quantum dot. In particular, we show that graphene quantum dots emit single photons at room temperature with a high purity, a high brightness and a good photostability. These results pave the way to the development of new quantum systems based on these nanoscale pieces of graphene.

We addressed the carrier dynamics in so-called G-centers in silicon (consisting of substitutional-interstitial carbon pairs interacting with interstitial silicons) obtained via ion implantation into a silicon-on-insulator wafer. For this point defect in silicon emitting in the telecommunication wavelength range, we unravel the recombination dynamics by time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. More specifically, we performed detailed photoluminescence experiments as a function of excitation energy, incident power, irradiation fluence and temperature in order to study the impact of radiative and non-radiative recombination channels on the spectrum, yield and lifetime of G-centers. The sharp line emitting at 969 meV ($\sim$1280 nm) and the broad asymmetric sideband develo** at lower energy share the same recombination dynamics as shown by time-resolved experiments performed selectively on each spectral component. This feature accounts for the common origin of the two emission bands which are unambiguously attributed to the zero-phonon line and to the corresponding phonon sideband. In the framework of the Huang-Rhys theory with non-perturbative calculations, we reach an estimation of 1.6$\pm$0.1 $\angstrom$ for the spatial extension of the electronic wave function in the G-center. The radiative recombination time measured at low temperature lies in the 6 ns-range. The estimation of both radiative and non-radiative recombination rates as a function of temperature further demonstrate a constant radiative lifetime. Finally, although G-centers are shallow levels in silicon, we find a value of the Debye-Waller factor comparable to deep levels in wide-bandgap materials. Our results point out the potential of G-centers as a solid-state light source to be integrated into opto-electronic devices within a common silicon platform.

Condensed-matter emitters offer enriched cavity quantum electrodynamical effects due to the coupling to external degrees of freedom. In the case of carbon nanotubes a very peculiar coupling between localized excitons and the one-dimensional acoustic phonon modes can be achieved, which gives rise to pronounced phonon wings in the luminescence spectrum. By coupling an individual nanotube to a tunable optical micro-cavity, we show that this peculiar exciton-phonon coupling is a valuable resource to enlarge the tuning range of the single-photon source while kee** an excellent exciton-photon coupling efficiency and spectral purity. Using the unique flexibility of our scanning fiber cavity, we are able to measure the efficiency spectrum of the very same nanotube in the Purcell regime for several mode volumes. Whereas this efficiency spectrum looks very much like the free-space luminescence spectrum when the Purcell factor is small (large mode volume), we show that the deformation of this spectrum at lower mode volumes can be traced back to the strength of the exciton-photon coupling. It shows an enhanced efficiency on the red wing that arises from the asymmetry of the incoherent energy exchange processes between the exciton and the cavity. This allows us to obtain a tuning range up to several hundred times the spectral width of the source.

We develop a theoretical frame to investigate the single-photon emission spectral efficiency of a solid-state nano-emitter embedded in a high quality factor micro-cavity. This study encompasses the case of localized excitons embedded in a one, two or three-dimensional matrix. The populations evolutions are calculated based on a spin-boson model, using the non-interacting blip approximation (NIBA). We find that the single-photon spectral efficiency of the cavity-coupled emitter can be expressed by a simple formula, taking as inputs the free-space emission and absorption spectra of the emitter as well as the loss rates of the system. In other words, the information on the interaction between the exciton and the phonon bath, encoded in the free-space behavior of the emitter, is sufficient to obtain the dynamics of the system in the cavity. We compute numerically the spectral efficiency for several types of localized emitters and show distinct behaviors depending on the phonon bath dimensionality. In particular, a pronounced asymmetric energy exchange between the emitter and the cavity on the side-bands can yield a considerable extension of the tuning range of the sources through phonon-assisted cavity feeding.

Using the Minimal Model Program, any degeneration of K-trivial varieties can be arranged to be in a Kulikov type form, i.e. with trivial relative canonical divisor and mild singularities. In the hyper-Kähler setting, we can then deduce a finiteness statement for monodromy acting on $H^2$, once one knows that one component of the central fiber is not uniruled. Independently of this, using deep results from the geometry of hyper-Kähler manifolds, we prove that a finite monodromy projective degeneration of hyper-Kähler manifolds has a smooth filling (after base change and birational modifications). As a consequence of these two results, we prove a generalization of Huybrechts' theorem about birational versus deformation equivalence, allowing singular central fibers. As an application, we give simple proofs for the deformation type of certain geometric constructions of hyper-Kähler manifolds (e.g. Debarre--Voisin or Laza--Saccà--Voisin). In a slightly different direction, we establish some basic properties (dimension and rational homology type) for the dual complex of a Kulikov type degeneration of hyper-Kähler manifolds.

Engineering of cooling mechanisms is a bottleneck in nanoelectronics. Whereas thermal exchanges in diffusive graphene are mostly driven by defect assisted acoustic phonon scattering, the case of high-mobility graphene on hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) is radically different with a prominent contribution of remote phonons from the substrate. A bi-layer graphene on hBN transistor with local gate is driven in a regime where almost perfect current saturation is achieved by compensation of the decrease of the carrier density and Zener-Klein tunneling (ZKT) at high bias. Using noise thermometry, we show that this Zener-Klein tunneling triggers a new cooling pathway due to the emission of hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPP) in hBN by out-of-equilibrium electron-hole pairs beyond the super-Planckian regime. The combination of ZKT-transport and HPP-cooling promotes graphene on BN transistors as a valuable nanotechnology for power devices and RF electronics.

$φ$ is topologically trivial. We prove that if the fibration has maximal variation or is isotrivial, the set of points $b$ such that the restriction
$M_{\mid X_b}$ is torsion is dense in $B$. We give an application to the Chow ring of $X$. We prove a similar result for elliptic fibrations which gives a toy model for the argument.

In this paper, we obtain a smooth projective compactification of the intermediate Jacobian fibration giving a ten-dimensional compact hyper-Kähler manifold, which we then show to be deformation equivalent to the exceptional example of O'Grady. This proves a conjecture by Markushevich.

Abstract:
We prove the existence of a family $\mathcal{X}\rightarrow B$ of smooth projective fourfolds, such that the very general fiber $\mathcal{X}_t$ is not stably rational (a fortiori not rational), but some special fibers $\mathcal{X}_t$ are rational (a fortiori stably rational).

Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs) are among the very few candidates for single-photon sources operating in the telecom bands since they exhibit large photon antibunching up to room temperature. However, coupling a nanotube to a photonic structure is highly challenging because of the random location and emission wavelength in the growth process. Here, we demonstrate the realization of a widely tunable single-photon source by using a carbon nanotube inserted in an original repositionable fiber micro-cavity : we fully characterize the emitter in the free-space and subsequently form the cavity around the nanotube. This brings an invaluable insight into the emergence of quantum electrodynamical effects. We observe an efficient funneling of the emission into the cavity mode with a strong sub-Poissonian statistics together with an up to 6-fold Purcell enhancement factor. By exploiting the cavity feeding effect on the phonon wings, we locked the single-photon emission at the cavity frequency over a 4~THz-wide band while kee** the mode width below 80~GHz. This paves the way to multiplexing and multiple qubit coupling.

On a conjecture of Matsushita
Authors:

Abstract:
We prove a weak version of a conjecture of Matsushita saying that for a Lagrangian fibration on a hyper-Kaehler manifold $X$, the moduli map for the fibers is either generically of maximal rank or constant. Assuming the base is smooth and $b_2(X)-ρ(X)\geq5$, we prove the conjecture for a very general deformation of $X$ with constant Néron-Severi group.

Carbon nanotubes are quantum sources whose emission can be tuned at telecommunication wavelengths by choosing the diameter appropriately. Most applications require the smallest possible linewidth. Therefore, the study of the underlying dephasing mechanisms is of utmost interest. Here, we report on the low-temperature photoluminescence of high crystalline quality individual single-wall carbon nanotubes synthesized by laser ablation (L-SWNTs) and emitting at telecommunication wavelengths. A thorough statistical analysis of their emission spectra reveals a typical linewidth one order of magnitude narrower than that of most samples reported in the literature. The narrowing of the PL line of L-SWNTs is due to a weaker effective exciton-phonon coupling subsequent to a weaker localization of the exciton. These results suggest that exciton localization in SWNTs not only arises from interfacial effects, but that the intrinsic crystalline quality of the SWNT plays an important role.
