Abstract:
The form factor of the electromagnetic excitation of $^{12}$C to its 2$^+_1$ state was measured at extremely low momentum transfers in an electron scattering experiment at the S-DALINAC. A combined analysis with the world form factor data results in a reduced transition strength $B(E2; 2^+_1\rightarrow 0^+_1) =7.63(19)$ e$^2$fm$^4$ with an accuracy improved to 2.5\%. In-Medium-No Core Shell Model…

In-Medium-No Core Shell Model results with interactions derived from chiral effective field theory are capable to reproduce the result. A quadrupole moment $Q(2^+_1) = 5.97(30)$ efm$^2$ can be extracted from the strict correlation with the $B((E2)$ strength emerging in the calculations.

The structure of exotic nuclei provides valuable tests for state-of-the-art nuclear theory. In particular electromagnetic transition rates are more sensitive to aspects of nuclear forces and many-body physics than excitation energies alone. We report the first lifetime measurement of excited states in $^{21}$O, finding $τ_{1/2^+}=420^{+35}_{-32}\text{(stat)}^{+34}_{-12}\text{(sys)}$\,ps. This result together with the deduced level scheme and branching ratio of several $γ$-ray decays are compared to both phenomenological shell-model and ab initio calculations based on two- and three-nucleon forces derived from chiral effective field theory. We find that the electric quadrupole reduced transition probability of $\rm B(E2;1/2^+ \rightarrow 5/2^+_{g.s.}) = 0.71^{+0.07\ +0.02}_{-0.06\ -0.06}$~e$^2$fm$^4$, derived from the lifetime of the $1/2^+$ state, is smaller than the phenomenological result where standard effective charges are employed, suggesting the need for modifications of the latter in neutron-rich oxygen isotopes. We compare this result to both large-space and valence-space ab initio calculations, and by using multiple input interactions we explore the sensitivity of this observable to underlying details of nuclear forces.

We present a family of nucleon-nucleon (NN) plus three-nucleon (3N) interactions up to N3LO in the chiral expansion that provides an accurate ab initio description of ground-state energies and charge radii up to the medium-mass regime with quantified theory uncertainties. Starting from the NN interactions proposed by Entem, Machleidt and Nosyk, we construct 3N interactions with consistent chiral order, non-local regulator, and cutoff value and explore the dependence of nuclear observables over a range of mass numbers on the 3N low-energy constants. By fixing these constants using the 3-H and 16-O ground-state energies, we obtain interactions that robustly reproduce experimental energies and radii for large range from p-shell nuclei to the nickel isotopic chain and resolve many of the deficiencies of previous interactions. Based on the order-by-order convergence and the cutoff dependence of nuclear observables, we assess the uncertainties due the interaction, which yield a significant contribution to the total theory uncertainty.

We explore the impact of optimizations of the single-particle basis on the convergence behavior and robustness of ab initio no-core shell model calculations. Our focus is on novel basis sets defined by the natural orbitals of a correlated one-body density matrix that is obtained in second-order many-body perturbation theory. Using a perturbatively improved density matrix as starting point informs the single-particle basis about the dominant correlation effects on the global structure of the many-body state, while kee** the computational cost for the basis optimization at a minimum. Already the comparison of the radial single-particle wavefunctions reveals the superiority of the natural-orbital basis compared to a Hartree-Fock or harmonic oscillator basis, and it highlights pathologies of the Hartree-Fock basis. We compare the model-space convergence of energies, root-mean-square radii, and selected electromagnetic observables with all three basis sets for selected p-shell nuclei using chiral interactions with explicit three-nucleon terms. In all cases the natural-orbital basis provides the fastest and most robust convergence, making it the most efficient basis for no-core shell model calculations. As an application we present no-core shell model calculations for the ground-state energies of all oxygen isotopes and assess the accuracy of the normal-ordered two-body approximation of the three-nucleon interaction in the natural-orbital basis.

It is shown that both of the low-energy constants entering the three-nucleon force at this order can be reliably determined from the triton binding energy and the differential cross section minimum in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering. The inclusion of the three-nucleon force is found to improve the agreement with the data for most of the considered observables.

We compare the results with those based on selected phenomenological and chiral EFT two-nucleon potentials, discuss the convergence pattern of the chiral expansion and estimate the achievable theoretical accuracy at various chiral orders using the novel approach to quantify truncation errors of the chiral expansion without relying on cutoff variation. We also address the robustness of this method and explore alternative ways to estimate the theoretical uncertainty from the truncation of the chiral expansion.

We introduce a hybrid many-body approach that combines the flexibility of the No-Core Shell Model (NCSM) with the efficiency of Multi-Configurational Perturbation Theory (MCPT) to compute ground- and excited-state energies in arbitrary open-shell nuclei in large model spaces. The NCSM in small model spaces is used to define a multi-determinantal reference state that contains the most important multi-particle multi-hole correlations and a subsequent second-order MCPT correction is used to capture additional correlation effects from a large model space. We apply this new ab initio approach for the calculation of ground-state and excitation energies of even and odd-mass carbon, oxygen, and fluorine isotopes and compare to large-scale NCSM calculations that are computationally much more expensive.

We merge two successful ab initio nuclear-structure methods, the no-core shell model (NCSM) and the multi-reference in-medium similarity renormalization group (IM-SRG) to define a new many-body approach for the comprehensive description of ground and excited states of closed and open-shell nuclei. Building on the key advantages of the two methods---the decoupling of excitations at the many-body level in the IM-SRG and the access to arbitrary nuclei, eigenstates, and observables in the NCSM---their combination enables fully converged no-core calculations for an unprecedented range of nuclei and observables at moderate computational cost. We present applications in the carbon and oxygen isotopic chains, where conventional NCSM calculations are still feasible and provide an important benchmark. The efficiency and rapid convergence of the new approach make it ideally suited for ab initio studies of the complete spectroscopy of nuclei up into the medium-mass regime.

We study the use of truncated normal-ordered three-nucleon interactions in ab initio nuclear structure calculations starting from chiral two- plus three-nucleon Hamiltonians evolved consistently with the similarity renormalization group (SRG). We present three key steps: (i) a rigorous benchmark of the normal-ordering approximation in the importance-truncated no-core shell model (IT-NCSM) for 4-He, 16-O, and 40-Ca; (ii) a direct comparison of the IT-NCSM results with coupled-cluster calculations at the singles and doubles level (CCSD) for 16-O; and (iii) first applications of SRG-evolved chiral NN+3N Hamiltonians in CCSD for the medium-mass nuclei 16,24-O and 40,48-Ca. We show that the normal-ordered two-body approximation works very well beyond the lightest isotopes and opens a path for ab initio studies of medium-mass and heavy nuclei with chiral two- plus three-nucleon interactions. At the same time we highlight the predictive power of chiral Hamiltonians.
