Levin-Wen models are a class of two-dimensional lattice spin models with a Hamiltonian that is a sum of commuting projectors, which describe topological phases of matter related to Drinfeld centres. We generalise this construction to lattice systems internal to a topological phase described by an arbitrary modular fusion category $\mathcal{C}$. The lattice system is defined in terms of an orbifold datum $\mathbb{A}$ in $\mathcal{C}$, from which we construct a state space and a commuting-projector Hamiltonian $H_{\mathbb{A}}$ acting on it. The topological phase of the degenerate ground states of $H_{\mathbb{A}}$ is characterised by a modular fusion category $\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{A}}$ defined directly in terms of $\mathbb{A}$. By choosing different $\mathbb{A}$'s for a fixed $\mathcal{C}$, one obtains precisely all phases which are Witt-equivalent to $\mathcal{C}$.
As special cases we recover the Kitaev and the Levin-Wen lattice models from instances of orbifold data in the trivial modular fusion category of vector spaces, as well as phases obtained by anyon condensation in a given phase $\mathcal{C}$.

Defects and excitations in the Kitaev model

Abstract:
We construct a Kitaev model with defects using twists or 2-cocycles of semi-simple, finite-dimensional Hopf algebras as defect data. We construct a Kitaev model with defects using twists or 2-cocycles of semi-simple, finite-dimensional Hopf algebras as defect data. This data is derived by applying Tannaka duality to Turaev-Viro topological quantum field theories with defects. From this we also derive additional conditions for moving, fusing and braiding excitations in the Kitaev model with defects. We give a description of excitations in the Kitaev model and show that they satisfy conditions we derive from Turaev-Viro topological quantum field theories with defects. Assigning trivial defect data one obtains transparent defects and we show that they can be removed, yielding the Kitaev model without defects.

Abstract:
An isotype heterojunction n+-ZnO/n-Si photodetector is developed, demonstrating wavelength-selective or broadband operation, depending on the applied bias voltage. Additionally, at self-powered (zero bias) operation, it distinguishes between UV, visible, and near IR (NIR) photons by polarity control of the photocurrent. The photodetector is developed by atomic layer deposition (ALD) of ZnO on n-Si, followed by electric contact deposition and annealing. Photoluminescence measurements reveal high optical quality and improved crystallinity of annealed ZnO on silicon. Photocurrent measurements as a function of illumination wavelength and bias voltage show small negative values in the UV-visible spectral range at zero and positive bias voltage and high positive values in the NIR spectral range. For these measurements, we consider the electric contact to ZnO as the anode and the electric contact to silicon as the cathode. At negative bias voltage, the device shows broadband operation with high photocurrent values across the UV-vis-NIR.

We develop ZnO/p-Si photodetectors by atomic layer deposition (ALD) of ZnO thin films on laser-microstructured silicon and we investigate their electrical and optical behavior, demonstrating high sensitivity and broadband operation. Microstructured p-type silicon was obtained by ns-laser irradiation in SF6 gas, which results in the formation of quasi-ordered and uniform microspikes on the silicon surface. The irradiated silicon contains sulfur impurities, which extend its absorbance to the near infrared. A thin film of ZnO was conformally deposited on the microstructured silicon substrates by ALD. Photoluminescence measurements indicate high crystalline quality of the ZnO film after annealing. Current-voltage (I-V) measurements of the ZnO/p-Si heterodiodes in dark show a non-linear behavior with unusual high current values in reverse bias. Under illumination photocurrent is observed for reverse bias, even for wavelengths below the silicon bandgap in the case of the laser-microstructured photodetectors. Higher current values are measured for the microstructured photodetectors, compared to planar ones. Photoconductivity measurements show enhanced responsivity across the UV-Vis-NIR spectral range for the laser-microstructured devices, due to their increased surface area and light absorption.

Abstract:
We show that any pivotal Hopf monoid $H$ in a symmetric monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$ gives rise to actions of map** class groups of oriented surfaces of genus $g \geq 1$ with $n \geq 1$ boundary components. We show that any pivotal Hopf monoid $H$ in a symmetric monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$ gives rise to actions of map** class groups of oriented surfaces of genus $g \geq 1$ with $n \geq 1$ boundary components. These map** class group actions are given by group homomorphisms into the group of automorphisms of certain Yetter-Drinfeld modules over $H$. They are associated with edge slides in embedded ribbon graphs that generalise chord slides in chord diagrams. We give a concrete description of these map** class group actions in terms of generating Dehn twists and defining relations. For the case where $\mathcal{C}$ is finitely complete and cocomplete, we also obtain actions of map** class groups of closed surfaces by imposing invariance and coinvariance under the Yetter-Drinfeld module structure.

CdSe quantum dots (QDs) with different organic linker molecules are attached to ZnO nanowires (NWs) to study the luminescence dynamics and the electron tunneling from the QDs to the nanowires in time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) and photoconductivity measurements. The PL transients of the QD luminescence indicate two different recombination channels: the direct recombination inside the QD core and the recombination via QD surface defect states. After linking the QDs to the ZnO NW surface, photo-induced electron tunneling from an excited state of the QD into the conduction band of the nanowire becomes visible by a clear decrease of the PL decay time. Efficient electron tunneling is confirmed by a strong enhancement of the photocurrent through the functionalized nanowires in which the tunneling rate can be controlled by using different organic linker molecules.
