We report an unusual enhancement of the magnetic induction in single crystals of the magnetic superconductor RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ , highlighting the interplay between superconducting and magnetic subsystems in this material. Contrary to the conventional Meissner expulsion of magnetic flux below the superconducting transition temperature, we observe a substantial boost of the magnetic flux density upon approaching the magnetic transition temperature, Tm. Direct imaging of the flux evolution with a magneto-optical technique, shows that the magnetic subsystem serves as an internal magnetic flux pump, drawing Abrikosov vortices from the surface, while the superconducting subsystem controls their conveyance into the bulk of the magnetic superconductor via a peculiar self-organized critical state.

Abstract:
Ag-sheathed CaKFe4As4 superconducting tapes have been fabricated via the ex-situ powder-in-tube method. Thermal and X-ray diffraction analyses suggest that the CaKFe4As4 phase is unstable at high temperatures. It decomposes into the CaAgAs phase which reacts strongly with the silver sheath. We therefore sintered the tape at 500C and obtain a transport critical current density Jc(4.2 K, 0 T)~ 2.7x1…

We therefore sintered the tape at 500C and obtain a transport critical current density Jc(4.2 K, 0 T)~ 2.7x10^4 A/cm2. The pinning potential derived from magnetoresistance measurements is one order of magnitude lower than that of the (Ba/Sr)1-xKxFe2As2 tapes. Combining with the scanning electron microscopy and magneto-optical imaging results, we suggest that bad connectivity between superconducting grains caused by the low sintering temperature is the main factor responsible for the low Jc. However, this system is still a promising candidate for superconducting wires and tapes if we further optimize the post-annealing process to achieve better grain connectivity.

Theoretical and experimental studies of intrinsic Josephson junctions that naturally occur in high-Tc superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi-2212) have demonstrated their potential for novel types of compact devices for the generation and sensing of electromagnetic radiation in the THz range. Here, we show that the THz-on-a-chip concept may be realized in liquid phase epitaxial-grown (LPE) thick Bi-2212 films. We have grown μm-thick Bi-2212 LPE films on MgO substrates. These films display excellent c-axis alignment and single crystal grains of about 650x150 μm2 in size. A branched current-voltage characteristic was clearly observed in c-axis transport, which is a clear signature of underdamped intrinsic Josephson junctions, and a prerequisite for THz-generation. We discuss LPE growth conditions allowing improvement of the structural quality and superconducting properties of Bi-2212 films for THz applications.

We report the direct imaging of a novel modulated flux striped domain phase in a nearly twin-free YBCO crystal. These domains arise from instabilities in the vortex structure within a narrow region of tilted magnetic fields at small angles from the in-plane direction. By comparing the experimental and theoretically derived vortex phase diagrams we infer that the stripe domains emerge from a first order phase transition of the vortex structure. The size of domains containing vortices of certain orientations is controlled by the balance between the vortex stray field energy and the positive energy of the domain boundaries. Our results confirm the existence of the kinked vortex chain phase in an anisotropic high temperature superconductor and reveal a sharp transition in the state of this phase resulting in regular vortex domains.

Stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) made from high-temperature superconductors such as Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} (Bi-2212) are a promising source of coherent continuous-wave terahertz radiation. It is thought that at electrical bias conditions under which THz-emission occurs hot spots may form due to resistive self-heating, and that these spots may be highly beneficial for the generation of high levels of THz power. Here we perform an imaging study of the temperature distribution at the surface of BSCCO stacks utilizing the temperature-dependent 612nm fluorescence line of Eu^{3+} in a europium chelate. The images directly reveal a highly non-uniform temperature distribution in which the temperature in the middle of the stack can exceed the superconducting transition temperature by tens of Kelvin under biasing conditions typical for THz-emission.

The crystals consist of the dominant alpha - phase with trace amounts of beta- phase as identified by powder x-ray diffraction. With four-probe resistance measurements we obtained a zero-resistance critical temperature of 7.5 K and a superconducting onset transition temperature of up to 11.8 K in zero magnetic field as well as an anisotropy of 1.5 +- 0.1 for the critical field. Magnetization measurements on individual crystals reveal the co-existence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism.

We present numerical and analytical studies of coupled nonlinear Maxwell and thermal diffusion equations which describe nonisothermal dendritic flux penetration in superconducting films. We show that spontaneous branching of propagating flux filaments occurs due to nonlocal magnetic flux diffusion and positive feedback between flux motion and Joule heat generation. The branching is triggered by a thermomagnetic edge instability which causes stratification of the critical state. The resulting distribution of magnetic microavalanches depends on a spatial distribution of defects. Our results are in good agreement with experiments performed on Nb films.

The near-field intensity patterns can be manipulated by varying the angle and polarization of the incident beam.

Electron microscopy images show a high degree of order of the antidot arrays. Various sizes and shapes of the antidots were observed with increasing thickness of the deposited nickel. New features appear in the antidot arrays in both magnetization and transport measurements when the external magnetic field is parallel to the current direction, including an enhancement and a nonmonotonous field dependence of the magnetoresistance, larger values of the coercive field and remanence moment, and smaller saturation field.

Pronounced matching effects in the magnetization and Little-Parks oscillations of the superconducting critical temperature have been observed in fields up to 9 kOe. Flux pinning in the patterned samples is enhanced by two orders of magnitude as compared to unpatterned reference samples in applied fields exceeding 5 kOe. Matching effects are a dominant contribution to vortex pinning at temperatures as low as 4.2 K due to the extremely small spacing of the holes.

Peculiarities of interaction between the pancake and Josephson vortices (JV) depending on the values of crossing fields and temperature are studied based on the observations of these decoration patterns. Evidences of the period-doubling in the decoration patterns compared to the JV stack period, migration of JV lines between neighboring stacks, and transitions between different JV configurations are reported. Imaging of the pancake/Josephson vortex decoration patterns over large areas is shown to be a sensitive tool for detecting local variations of the anisotropy and map** imperfections in layered HTS samples.

Magnetic field induced transitions in the antiferromagnetic layered manganite La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7 were studied using magnetization measurements and a high-resolution magneto-optical imaging technique. We report the first direct observation of the formation of ferromagnetic domains appearing at the first order spin-flop transition. The magnetization process proceeds through nucleation of polarized domains at crystal defect sites and not by domain wall motion. A small magnetic hysteresis is caused by the nucleation and annihilation of domains in the mixed state. These results establish a direct link betweeen the magnetic structure on the atomic scale as seen in neutron scattering and the macroscopic properties of the sample as seen in magnetization and conductivity measurements.
