We discuss the characteristic features of triple Cu-O2 layer cuprates superconductors, by comparing those of single and double layer cuprates superconductors. After a brief introduction to multilayer cuprates and their characteristic properties such as the do** imbalance between the inner and outer Cu-O2 planes (IP and OP, respectively) revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance, we present the experimental results of angle resolved photoemission and Raman scattering spectroscopy for the triple layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+z which showed two different superconducting gaps opening on the IP and OP. The do** dependence of the double peak structure in Raman spectra was found to be qualitatively consistent with that of single and double layer cuprates, if each layer do** for the IP and OP is taken into account. The fact that the IP and OP share the same electronic phase diagram and the same transition temperature (Tc) hints to a coupling between the IP and OP. Moreover, the energies of IP and OP Raman peaks were found to be very large, not scaling with Tc, which can be attributed to the strong influence of the pseudogap of the underdoped IP in triple layer cuprates. These findings suggest that the high Tc and the large gap ratio of triple layer cuprates are realized through a combination of the interlayer coupling between the OP and IP and the interaction between superconductivity and the pseudogap.

Both electronic Raman scattering (ERS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) revealed two energy scales for the gap in different momentum spaces in the cuprates. However, the interpretations were different, and the gap values were also different in two experiments. In order to clarify the origin of these discrepancies, we directly compared ERS and ARPES by calculating ERS from the experimental data of ARPES through the Kubo formula. The calculated ERS spectra were in good agreement with the experimental results except for the B$_{1g}$ peak energies. The do**-dependent B$_{2g}$ peak energy was well reproduced from a do**-independent d-wave gap deduced from ARPES, by assuming a particular spectral weight distribution along the Fermi surface. The B$_{1g}$ peak energies could not be reproduced by the ARPES data. The difference between B$_{1g}$ ERS and antinodal ARPES became larger with underdo**, which implies that the effect of the pseudogap is different in these two techniques.

Abstract:
We report the Raman scattering measurements on the triple layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi2223) crystals of four different do** levels from slightly overdoped to strongly underdoped regimes. We observed a double pair-breaking peak in the antinodal B1g configuration that we attribute to the two antinodal gaps opening on the outer and inner CuO2-plane (OP and IP) band, respectively. The do** dependence of the pair-breaking peak energy was investigated. Considering the difference in do** level between the IP and OP, all the B1g pair-breaking peak energies for OP and IP were found to align on a single line as a function of do**, which is consistent with the previous results on the double and mono-layer cuprates. Within our experimental accuracy the IP and OP peaks start to appear almost at the same temperature. These findings suggest some sort of interaction between the layers. The observed gap energy is very large, not scaling with Tc.
