Symbolic powers: Simis and weighted monomial ideals
Abstract: The aim of this work is to compare symbolic and ordinary powers of monomial ideals using commutative algebra and combinatorics. Monomial ideals whose symbolic and ordinary powers coincide are called Simis ideals. Weighted monomial ideals are defined by assigning linear weights to monomials. We examine Simis and normally torsion-free ideals, relate some of the properties of monomial ideals and weig… ▽ More

Indicator functions, v-numbers and Gorenstein rings in the theory of projective Reed-Muller-type codes
Abstract: For projective Reed--Muller-type codes we give a global duality criterion in terms of the v-number and the Hilbert function of a vanishing ideal. As an application, we provide a global duality theorem for projective Reed--Muller-type codes over Gorenstein vanishing ideals, generalizing the known case where the vanishing ideal is a complete intersection. Bounds for the Minimum Distance Function
Abstract: Let $I$ be a homogeneous ideal in a polynomial ring $S$. In this paper, we extend the study of the asymptotic behavior of the minimum distance function $δ_I$ of $I$ and give bounds for its stabilization point, $r_I$, when $I$ is an $F$-pure or a square-free monomial ideal. These bounds are related with the dimension and the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of $I$.

Computing the degree of a lattice ideal of dimension one
Abstract: We show that the degree of a graded lattice ideal of dimension 1 is the order of the torsion subgroup of the quotient group of the lattice. This gives an efficient method to compute the degree of this type of lattice ideals.

Complete intersections in binomial and lattice ideals
Abstract: For the family of graded lattice ideals of dimension 1, we establish a complete intersection criterion in algebraic and geometric terms. In positive characteristic, it is shown that all ideals of this family are binomial set theoretic complete intersections. In characteristic zero, we show that an arbitrary lattice ideal which is a binomial set theoretic complete intersection is a complete interse… ▽ More

Affine cartesian codes
Abstract: We compute the basic parameters (dimension, length, minimum distance) of affine evaluation codes defined on a cartesian product of finite sets. Given a sequence of positive integers, we construct an evaluation code, over a degenerate torus, with prescribed parameters. As an application of our results, we recover the formulas for the minimum distance of various families of evaluation codes.

Vanishing ideals over graphs and even cycles
Abstract: Let X be an algebraic toric set in a projective space over a finite field. We study the vanishing ideal, I(X), of X and show some useful degree bounds for a minimal set of generators of I(X). We give an explicit description of a set of generators of I(X), when X is the algebraic toric set associated to an even cycle or to a connected bipartite graph with pairwise disjoint even cycles. In this case… ▽ More

The Degree and regularity of vanishing ideals of algebraic toric sets over finite fields
Abstract: Let X* be a subset of an affine space A^s, over a finite field K, which is parameterized by the edges of a clutter. Let X and Y be the images of X* under the maps x --> [x] and x --> [(x,1)] respectively, where [x] and [(x,1)] are points in the projective spaces P^{s-1} and P^s respectively. For certain clutters and for connected graphs, we were able to relate the algebraic invariants and properti… ▽ More

Parameterized affine codes
Abstract: Let K be a finite field and let X* be an affine algebraic toric set parameterized by monomials. We give an algebraic method, using Groebner bases, to compute the length and the dimension of C_X*(d), the parameterized affine code of degree d on the set X*. If Y is the projective closure of X*, it is shown that C_X^*(d) has the same basic parameters that C_Y(d), the parameterized projective code on… ▽ More

On the vanishing ideal of an algebraic toric set and its parameterized linear codes
Abstract: Let K be a finite field and let X be a subset of a projective space, over the field K, which is parameterized by monomials arising from the edges of a clutter. We show some estimates for the degree-complexity, with respect to the revlex order, of the vanishing ideal I(X) of X. If the clutter is uniform, we classify the complete intersection property of I(X) using linear algebra. We show an upper b… ▽ More

Associated primes of powers of edge ideals
Abstract: Let G be a graph and let I be its edge ideal. Our main result shows that the sets of associated primes of the powers of I form an ascending chain. It is known that the sets of associated primes of I(i) and intcl(I(i)) stabilize for large i, where "intcl" denotes integral closure and I(i) denotes the i-th power of I. We show that for edge ideals their corresponding stable sets are equal. To show ou… ▽ More

Edge ideals: algebraic and combinatorial properties
Abstract: Let C be a clutter and let I(C) be its edge ideal. This is a survey paper on the algebraic and combinatorial properties of R/I(C) and C, respectively. We give a criterion to estimate the regularity of R/I(C) and apply this criterion to give new proofs of some formulas for the regularity. If C is a clutter and R/I(C) is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, we present a formula for the regularity of the ide… ▽ More

The minimum distance of parameterized codes on projective tori
Abstract: Let X be a subset of a projective space, over a finite field K, which is parameterized by the monomials arising from the edges of a clutter. Let I(X) be the vanishing ideal of X. It is shown that I(X) is a complete intersection if and only if X is a projective torus. In this case we determine the minimum distance of any parameterized linear code arising from X.

Abstract: Let K be a finite field with q elements and let X be a subset of a projective space P^{s-1}, over the field K, which is parameterized by Laurent monomials. Let I(X) be the vanishing ideal of X. Some of the main contributions of this paper are in determining the structure of I(X) and some of their invariants. It is shown that I(X) is a lattice ideal. Combinatorics of symbolic Rees algebras of edge ideals of clutters
Abstract: Let C be a clutter and let I be its edge ideal. We present a combinatorial description of the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra Rs(I) of I. It is shown that the minimal generators of Rs(I) are in one to one correspondence with the irreducible parallelizations of C. From our description some major results on symbolic Rees algebras of perfect graphs and clutters will follow. As a bypro… ▽ More

Combinatorics of Cremona monomial maps
Abstract: One studies Cremona monomial maps by combinatorial means. Among the results is a simple integer matrix theoretic proof that the inverse of a Cremona monomial map is also defined by monomials of fixed degree, and moreover, the set of monomials defining the inverse can be obtained explicitly in terms of the initial data. A neat consequence is drawn for the plane Cremona monomial group, in particular… ▽ More
