In the present paper, we analyze the fractal structures in magnitude time series for a set of unprecedented sample extracted from the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) catalog corresponding to 12 Circum-Pacific subduction zones from Chile to Kermadec. For this end, we used the classical Rescaled Range ($R/S$) analysis for estimating the long-term persistence signature derived from scaling parameter so-called Hurst exponent, $H$. As a result, we measured the referred exponent and obtained all values of $H>0.5$, indicating that a long-term memory effect exists. The main contribution of our paper, we found a possible fractal relationship between $H$ and the $b_{s}(q)$-index which emerges from nonextensive Gutenberg-Richter law as a function of the asperity, i.e., we show that the values of $H$ can be associated with the mechanism which controls the abundance of magnitude and, therefore, the level of activity of earthquakes. Finally, we concluded that dynamics associated with fragment-asperity interactions can be emphasized as a self-affine fractal phenomenon.

Abstract:
A Bayesian approach is adopted to analyze the sequence of seismic events and their magnitudes near João Câmara which occurred mainly from 1983 to 1998 along the Samambaia fault. In this work, we choose a Bayesian model for the process of occurrence times conditional on the observed magnitude values following the same procedure suggested by Stavrakakis and Tselentis (1987). The model parameters are determined on the basis of historical and physical information. We generate posterior samples from the joint posterior distribution of the model parameters by using a variant of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. We use the results in a variety of ways, including the construction of pointwise posterior confidence bands for the conditional intensity of the point process as a function of time, as well as, a posterior distribuition as a function of the mean of occurrence per unit time.

In this paper, we studied some geophysical properties of the SAF system in order to analyze the behavior of earthquakes in the context of Tsallis's $q$--Triplet. To that end, we considered 134,573 earthquake events in magnitude interval $2\leq m<8$, taken from the Southern Earthquake Data Center (SCEDC, 1932 - 2012). The values obtained ("$q$--Triplet"$\equiv$$\{$$q$$_{stat}$,$q$$_{sen}$,$q$$_{rel}$$\}$) reveal that the $q_{stat}$--Gaussian behavior of the aforementioned data exhibit long-range temporal correlations. Moreover, $q_{sen}$ exhibits quasi-monofractal behavior with a Hurst exponent of 0.87.

In this paper, we have considered some geophysical properties of the SAF system to test the viability of the nonextensive models for earthquakes developed in [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 73}, 026102, 2006]. To this end, we have used 6188 earthquakes events ranging in the magnitude interval $2 < m < 8$ that were taken from the Network Earthquake International Center catalogs (NEIC, 2004-2006) and the Bulletin of the International Seismological Centre (ISC, 1964-2003). For values of the Tsallis nonextensive parameter $q \simeq 1.68$, it is shown that the energy distribution function deduced in above reference provides an excellent fit to the NEIC and ISC SAF data.

We have revisited the fragment-asperity interaction model recently introduced by Sotolongo-Costa and Posadas (Physical Review Letters 92, 048501, 2004) by considering a different definition for mean values in the context of Tsallis nonextensive statistics and introducing a new scale between the earthquake energy and the size of fragment $ε\propto r^3$. The energy distribution function (EDF) deduced in our approach is considerably different from the one obtained in the above reference. We have also tested the viability of this new EDF with data from two different catalogs (in three different areas), namely, NEIC and Bulletin Seismic of the Revista Brasileira de Geofísica. Although both approaches provide very similar values for the nonextensive parameter $q$, other physical quantities, e.g., the energy density differs considerably, by several orders of magnitude.
