GaGeTe is a layered topological semimetal that has been recently found to exist in at least two different polytypes, $α$-GaGeTe ($R\bar{3}m$) and $β$-GaGeTe ($P6_3 mc$). Here we report a joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of these two polytypes at high pressure. Both polytypes show anisotropic compressibility and two phase transitions, above 7 and 15 GPa, respectively, as confirmed by XRD and Raman spectroscopy measurements. Although the nature of the high-pressure phases is not confirmed, comparison with other chalcogenides and total-energy calculations allow us to propose possible high-pressure phases for both polytypes with an increase in coordination for Ga and Ge atoms from 4 to 6. In particular, the simplification of the X-ray patterns for both polytypes above 15 GPa suggests a transition to a structure of relatively higher symmetry than the original one. This result is consistent with the rocksalt-like high-pressure phases observed in parent III-VI semiconductors, such as GaTe, GaSe, and InSe. Pressure-induced amorphization is observed upon pressure release. The electronic band structures of $α$-GaGeTe and $β$-GaGeTe and their pressure dependence also show similarities to III-VI semiconductors, thus suggesting that the germanene-like sublayer induces a semimetallic character in both GaGeTe polytypes. Above 3 GPa, both polytypes lose their topological features, due to the opening of the direct band gap, while the reduction of the interlayer space increases the thermal conductivity at high pressure.

We report a comparative theoretical study of the \textit{Pnma} and \textit{R-3m} phases of Sb$_2$S$_3$, Bi$_2$S$_3$, and Sb$_2$Se$_3$ close to ambient pressure.
Our enthalpy calculations at 0 K show that at ambient pressure the \textit{R-3m} (tetradymite-like) phase of Sb$_2$Se$_3$ is energetically more stable than the \textit{Pnma} phase, contrary to what is observed for Sb$_2$S$_3$ and Bi$_2$S$_3$, and irrespective of the exchange-correlation functional employed in the calculations.
The result for Sb$_2$Se$_3$ is in contradiction to experiments where all three compounds are usually grown in the \textit{Pnma} phase.
This result is further confirmed by free-energy calculations taking into account the temperature dependence of the unit-cell volumes and phonon frequencies.
Lattice dynamics and elastic tensor calculations further show that both \textit{Pnma} and \textit{R-3m} phases of Sb$_2$Se$_3$ are dynamically and mechanically stable at zero applied pressure.
Since these results suggest that the formation of the \textit{R-3m} phase for Sb$_2$Se$_3$ should be feasible at close to ambient conditions, we provide a theoretical crystal structure and simulated Raman and infrared spectra to help in its identification. We also discuss the results of the two published works that have claimed to have synthesized tetradymite-like Sb$_2$Se$_3$.
Finally, the stability of the \textit{R-3m} phase across the three group-15 \textit{A$_2$X$_3$} sesquichalcogenides is analysed based on their van der Waals gap and X-X in-plane geometry.

SbPO4 is a complex monoclinic layered material characterized by a strong activity of the non-bonding lone electron pair (LEP) of Sb. The strong cation LEP leads to the formation of layers piled up along the a-axis and linked by weak Sb-O electrostatic interactions. In fact, Sb is 4-fold coordination with O similar to what occurs with the P-O coordination, despite the large difference of ionic radii and electronegativity between both elements. Here we report a joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural and vibrational properties of SbPO4 at high pressure. We show that SbPO4 is not only one of the most compressible phosphates but also one of the most compressible compounds of the ABO4 family. Moreover, it has a considerable anisotropic compression behavior with the largest compression occurring along a direction close to a-axis and governed by the compression of the LEP and the weak inter-layer Sb-O bonds. The strong compression along the a-axis leads to a subtle modification of the monoclinic crystal structure above 3 GPa leading from a 2D to a 3D material. Moreover, the onset of a reversible pressure-induced phase transition is observed above 9 GPa, which is completed above 20 GPa. We propose that the high-pressure phase is a triclinic distortion of the original monoclinic phase. The understanding of the compression mechanism of SbPO4 can aid in understanding the importance of the ion intercalation and catalytic properties of this layered compound.

High-pressure X-ray diffraction studies on nanocrystals of the pseudo-vaterite-type borates GdBO$_3$ and YBO$_3$ are herein reported up to 17.4(2) and 13.4(2) GPa respectively. The subsequent determination of the room-temperature pressure-volume equations of state is presented and discussed in the context of contemporary publications which contradict the findings of this work. In particular, the isothermal bulk moduli of GdBO$_3$ and YBO$_3$ are found to be 170(13) and 163(13) GPa respectively, almost 50% smaller than recent findings. Our experimental results provide an accurate revision of the high-pressure compressibility behaviour of GdBO$_3$ and YBO$_3$ which is consistent with the known systematics in isomorphic borates and previous ab initio calculations. Finally we discuss how experimental/analytical errors could have led to unreliable conclusions reported elsewhere.

We report a theoretical \textit{ab-initio} study of $β$-As$_2$Te$_3$ ($R\bar{3}m$ symmetry) at hydrostatic pressures up to 12 GPa. We have systematically characterized the vibrational and electronic changes of the system induced by the pressure variation. The electronic band dispersions calculated at different pressures using \textit{QS}GW show an insulator-metal transition. At room pressure the system is a semiconductor with small band-gap, and the valence and conduction bands present a parabolic conventional dispersion. However around 2 GPa the parabolic shape of the bands become linear and touch at the Fermi level. This means that this compound undergoes a pressure-induced topological phase transition to a 3D analog of graphene, known as a 3D Dirac semi-metal, with gapless electronic excitations. At increasing pressures the gap reopens and variation of the character of the electronic band-gap from direct to indirect is evidenced. At 7 GPa we observe the formation of a negative band-gap character, which persists for pressures up to 12 GPa. Topological insulating features are evidenced from 2 to 12 GPa with a Z$_4$=3 topological index. Moreover by investigating the lattice thermal-conductivity at different pressures, we observe an ultra low value of $κ_\textrm{L}$ at 300 K for 0.5 GPa (0.294 and 0.486 Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ for the $x$-$y$-axis and for the $z$-axis, respectively) which is the result of existing low-frequency optical modes. At 2 GPa $κ_\textrm{L}$ increases to 1.170 and 0.669 Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$, for the $x$-$y$-axis and for the $z$-axis, respectively. At 4 GPa the thermal-conductivity values between the two distinct crystallographic axis tend to approximate, with 1.495 and 1.433 Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$, along the $x$-$y$-axis and the $z$-axis, respectively.

We report a joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of layered monoclinic arsenic sulfide (alpha-As2S3), aka mineral orpiment, under compression. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements performed in orpiment samples at high pressure and combined with ab initio calculations have allowed us to determine the equation of state and the tentative assignment of the symmetry of many Raman-active modes of orpiment. From our results, we conclude that no first-order phase transition occurs up to 25 GPa at room temperature; however, compression leads to an isostructural phase transition above 20 GPa. In fact, As coordination increases from threefold at room pressure to more than fivefold above 20 GPa. This increase in coordination can be understood as the formation of metavalent bonding at high pressure, which results in a progressive decrease of the electronic and optical bandgap, an increase of the dielectric tensor and Born effective charges, and a considerable softening of many high-frequency optical modes with pressure. The formation of metavalent bonding may also explain the behavior of other group-15 sesquichalcogenides under compression. Moreover, our results suggest that group-15 sesquichalcogenides either show metavalent bonding at room pressure or undergo a transition from p-type covalent bonding at room pressure towards metavalent bonding at high pressure, as a preceding phase towards metallic bonding at very high pressure.

This joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural, vibrational and electrical properties of rhombohedral SnSb2Te4 at high pressure unveils the internal mechanisms of its compression. The equation of state and the internal polyhedral compressibility, the symmetry and behavior of the Raman-active modes and the electrical behavior of this topological insulator under compression have been discussed and compared with the parent binary alpha-Sb2Te3 and SnTe compounds and with related ternary compounds. Our X-ray diffraction and Raman measurements together with theoretical calculations, which include topological electron density and electronic localization function analysis, evidence the presence of an isostructural phase transition around 2 GPa and a Fermi resonance around 3.5 GPa. The Raman spectrum of SnSb2Te4 shows vibrational modes that are forbidden in rocksalt SnTe; thus showing a novel way to experimentally observe the forbidden vibrational modes of some compounds. Additionally, since SnSb2Te4 is an incipient metal, like its parent binary compounds, we establish a new criterion to identify the recently proposed metavalent bonding in complex materials when different bond characters coexist in the system. Finally, SnSb2Te4 exhibits a pressure-induced decomposition into the high-pressure phases of its parent binary compounds above 7 GPa, which is supported by an analysis of their formation enthalpies. We have framed the behavior of SnSb2Te4 within the extended orbital radii map of BA2Te4 compounds, which paves the way to understand the pressure behavior and stability ranges of other layered van der Waals-type compounds with similar stoichiometry.

Cosmic dusts are mostly responsible for polarization of the light that we ob- serve from astrophysical objects. They also lead to color-extinction, thermal re- emission and other scattering related phenomena. Dusts are made of small particles which are characterised by their size (radius), composition (matter), and structure (morphology, including porosity). In the present work, we address the question of the role of the dust particle porosity on light polarization and color, using Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA) light scattering code. To answer this question, we developed an algorithm to generate solid particles of arbitrary values of porosity. In brief, the model considers a given homogeneous structure made of touching dipoles. The dipoles are randomly removed one by one, such that the remaining structure remains connected. We stop the removal process when the desired poros- ity is obtained. Then we study the optical properties of the porous particle. That way, we show how the proper value of the porosity affects the polarization and color of the light scattered by these porous particles. In addition to polarization, porosity has important effects on photometric color. Considering an important application, we emphasize the possible role of the porosity of the cometary dust particles on polarization and color of the light scattered by cometary coma.

The structural properties of Thallium (III) oxide (Tl2O3) have been studied both experimentally and theoretically under compression at room temperature. X-ray powder diffraction measurements up to 37.7 GPa have been complemented with ab initio total-energy calculations. The equation of state of Tl2O3 has been determined and compared to related compounds. It has been found experimentally that Tl2O3 remains in its initial cubic bixbyite-type structure up to 22.0 GPa. At this pressure, the onset of amorphization is observed, being the sample fully amorphous at 25.2 GPa. The sample retains the amorphous state after pressure release. To understand the pressure-induced amorphization process, we have studied theoretically the possible high-pressure phases of Tl2O3. Although a phase transition is predicted at 5.8 GPa to the orthorhombic Rh2O3-II-type structure and at 24.2 GPa to the orthorhombic a-Gd2S3-type structure, neither of these phases were observed experimentally, probably due to the hindrance of the pressure-driven phase transitions at room temperature. The theoretical study of the elastic behavior of the cubic bixbyite-type structure at high-pressure shows that amorphization above 22 GPa at room temperature might be caused by the mechanical instability of the cubic bixbyite-type structure which is theoretically predicted above 23.5 GPa.

Contradictory results of high-pressure studies in cubic bixbyite-type indium oxide (c-In2O3) at room temperature (RT) have motivated us to perform high-pressure powder x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements in this material. On increasing pressure c-In2O3 undergoes a transition to the Rh2O3-II structure. On decreasing pressure Rh2O3-II-type In2O3 undergoes a transition to a previously unknown phase which is isostructural to Rh2O3-III. On further decrease of pressure, another phase transition to corundum-type In2O3, which is metastable at room conditions, is observed. Recompression of metastable corundum-type In2O3 shows that the Rh2O3-III phase is the post-corundum phase. Our results are supported by theoretical ab initio calculations which show that the Rh2O3-III phase could be present in other sesquioxides, thus leading to a revision of the pressure-temperature phase diagrams of sesquioxides.

Raman scattering measurements and lattice-dynamics calculations have been performed on magnesium tungstate under high pressure up to 41 GPa. Experiments have been carried out under a selection of different pressure-media. The influence of non-hydrostaticity on the structural properties of MgWO4 and isomorphic compounds is examined. Under quasi-hydrostatic conditions a phase transition has been found at 26 GPa in MgWO4. The high-pressure phase has been tentatively assigned to a triclinic structure similar to that of CuWO4. We also report and discuss the Raman symmetries, frequencies, and pressure coefficients in the low- and high-pressure phases. In addition, the Raman frequencies for different wolframites are compared and the variation of the mode frequency with the reduced mass across the family is investigated. Finally, the accuracy of theoretical calculations is systematically discussed for MgWO4, MnWO4, FeWO4, CoWO4, NiWO4, ZnWO4, and CdWO4.

Recently simultaneous generation of continuous-wave visible laser light in the three fundamental colors has been experimentally demonstrated in Nd3+-doped LiNbO3 and Sr0.6Ba0.4(NbO3)2 by quasi-phase matching intracavity self-frequency conversion. In this work, we report the modelization of RGB lasers operating under similar experimental conditions but designed in the simplest quasi-periodically poled ferroelectric form by using the Fourier Transform technique. The aim of this work is to analyse the possibility of controlling the three laser intensities in an independent and novel way by means of the linear electrooptic (Pockels) effect in these non-linear materials. Our results suggest that the application of electrooptic effect for this purpose, according to our proposed scheme, is better adapted to Sr0.6Ba0.4(NbO3)2 than to Nd3+-doped LiNbO3.
