We explore a degenerate four-wave mixing process induced by transversely structured light beams in a rubidium vapor cell. In particular, we consider the nonlinear interaction driven by optical modes contained in the orbital angular momentum Poincaré sphere, which can be parametrized in terms of a polar and an azimuthal angle. In this context we investigate the transfer of spatial structure to two distinct four-wave mixing signals, possessing different propagation directions in space. We show that under usual assumptions, the output fields can also be described by modes belonging to Poincaré spheres, and that the angles describing the input and output modes are related according to well-defined rules. Our experimental results show good agreement with the calculations, which predict intricate field structures and a transition of the FWM transverse profile between the near- and far-field regions.

We study the field intensity fluctuations of two independent four-wave mixing signals generated in a cold rubidium sample as well as the transmission signals. We employ an experimental setup using a single CW laser to induce the nonlinear process in a forward geometry using either parallel and circular or orthogonal and linear polarizations of the input fields. Even though the spectra of each experimental configuration are significantly different due to the distinct level structures of each scenario, both cases present intensit-intensity cross-correlation of the four-wave mixing signals. We also calculate the cross-correlation between the input fields and draft a theoretical model that points that resonant phase-noise to amplitude-noise conversion allows the observation of Rabi oscillations in the cross-correlation curves.

We present a theoretical analysis of the spatial shape of two symmetric signals of degenerate four-wave mixing induced by Gaussian beams in a thin sample of two-level atoms. Our calculations take into account the full spatial and spectral dependencies of the relevant nonlinear susceptibilities that govern the two processes. This reveals two interesting effects. The first one is that the total power of incident beams affects the transverse profile of the four-wave mixing signals at the medium exit and their free propagation. The second one is the influence of the spectral characteristics of the medium on the longitudinal profile of both generated signals upon free propagation. We argue that the first effect can be seen as the saturation of the medium in regions of higher intensity, while the second can be understood as the result of a nonlinear contribution to the refractive index inside the atomic medium. These effects can be symmetric between the two signals, with asymmetries induced by different detunings from resonance of the incident fields.

This work presents a theoretical analysis of the Autler-Townes splitting pattern in the four-wave mixing signal generated in a three-level cascade Doppler-broadened system. We employ the density matrix formalism to write the Bloch equations and solve them numerically. The solutions allow us to compare the response of the upper level population and the generated signal coherence for homogeneously and non-homogeneously broadened systems. Our results reveal an AC Stark shift in the nonlinear signal when the frequency of the strong or weak beam is scanned, in contrast to what is observed in the fluorescence. Furthermore, we present experimental data for the four-wave mixing signal in a hot rubidium vapor for the copropagating configuration of the exciting beams. The behavior of the AC Stark displacement and signal amplitude as a function of laser power indicates a good agreement between the model and the experimental results.

We report experimental and theoretical results of two symmetrical signals of degenerate four-wave mixing generated in rubidium vapor. Both nonlinear signals are induced by two almost copropagating laser beams, with $\vec{k}_{a}$ and $\vec{k}_{b}$ wave-vectors, and detected simultaneously in the $2\vec{k}_{a}-\vec{k}_{b}$ and $2\vec{k}_{b}-\vec{k}_{a}$ directions. In each direction, we observe a single peak when the two beams are tuned on the closed transition $^{85}$Rb$~5S_{1/2} (F=3) \rightarrow 5P_{3/2} (F=4)$. The excitation spectra reveal a small frequency separation between the two peaks, which is explained when propagation effects are taken into account. Furthermore, our theoretical analysis shows that a correct description of the frequency position of each peak is obtained only if coherent effects such as electromagnetically induced absorption are included.

An unexpected interference effect between four-wave mixing excitation routes in rubidium vapor is observed using a combination of a cw diode laser and a 1 GHz femtosecond pulse train. The generated coherent blue light is analyzed by scanning the diode frequency and the repetition rate of the frequency comb. In both cases, the cw laser induces an Autler-Townes splitting and a large separation is observed in the doublet structure due to the configuration of copropagating fields. Remarkably, by scanning the repetition rate, a narrow peak appears as a signature of the interfering pathways. A non-perturbative treatment of the Bloch equations achieves good agreement with the experimental data, and demonstrates that the interfering effect appears only when both lasers are resonant with one- and two-photon transitions for the same atomic velocity group.

The cw-laser plays a role as a velocity-selective filter and allows for a spectroscopy over a large spectral range including the $5D_{3/2}$ and $5D_{5/2}$ states. For a counterpropagating beam configuration, the response of each atomic velocity group is well characterized within the Doppler profile, and the excited hyperfine levels are clearly resolved. The contribution of the optical pum** to the direct two-photon process is also revealed. The results are well described in a frequency domain picture by considering the interaction of each velocity group with the cw laser and the modes of the frequency comb.

The strong signal dependency on the atomic density is characterized by a sharp growth and rapid saturation.
