Abstract:
Quantum field theory predicts a nonlinear response of the vacuum to strong electromagnetic fields of macroscopic extent. This fundamental tenet has remained experimentally challenging and is yet to be tested in the laboratory. A particularly distinct signature of the resulting optical activity of the quantum vacuum is vacuum birefringence. This offers an excellent opportunity for a precision test…

This offers an excellent opportunity for a precision test of nonlinear quantum electrodynamics in an uncharted parameter regime. Recently, the operation of the high-intensity laser ReLaX provided by the Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields (HIBEF) has been inaugurated at the High Energy Density (HED) scientific instrument of the European XFEL. We make the case that this worldwide unique combination of an x-ray free-electron laser and an ultra-intense near-infrared laser together with recent advances in high-precision x-ray polarimetry, refinements of prospective discovery scenarios, and progress in their accurate theoretical modelling have set the stage for performing an actual discovery experiment of quantum vacuum nonlinearity.

Magnetic properties of a Fermi gas in a noncommutative phase space
Authors:
S. Franchino Viñas,

Abstract:
Motivated by the precision attained by SQUID devices in measuring magnetic fields, we study in this article the thermodynamic behaviour of a fermion gas in two and three dimen\-sional spatial space with noncommutative coordinates and momenta. An explicit expression, both for Landau's diamagnetism and Pauli's paramagnetism, is obtained for the magnetization and magnetic susceptibility of the gas in…

Motivated by the precision attained by SQUID devices in measuring magnetic fields, we study in this article the thermodynamic behaviour of a fermion gas in two and three dimen\-sional spatial space with noncommutative coordinates and momenta. An explicit expression, both for Landau's diamagnetism and Pauli's paramagnetism, is obtained for the magnetization and magnetic susceptibility of the gas in two and three spatial dimensions. These results show that an upper bound for the noncommutative parameter $θ\lesssim (10 \,\text{Gev})^{-2}$ could be obtained.

Worldline approach to the Grosse-Wulkenhaar model
Authors:

Abstract:
We apply the worldline formalism to the Grosse-Wulkenhaar model and obtain an expression for the one-loop effective action which provides an efficient way for computing Schwinger functions in this theory. Using this expression we obtain the quantum corrections to the effective background and the $β$-functions, which are known to vanish at the self-dual point. The case of degenerate noncommutativit…

The case of degenerate noncommutativity is also considered. Our main result can be straightforwardly applied to any polynomial self-interaction of the scalar field and we consider that the worldline approach could be useful for studying effective actions of noncommutative gauge fields as well as in other non-local models or in higher-derivative field theories.

Abstract:
We study transport properties in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in the presence of two time-dependent point like weak impurities, taking into account finite-length effects. By employing analytical methods and performing a perturbation theory, we compute the backscattering pum** current (I_bs) in different regimes which can be established in relation to the oscillatory frequency of the impurities an…

We study transport properties in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in the presence of two time-dependent point like weak impurities, taking into account finite-length effects. By employing analytical methods and performing a perturbation theory, we compute the backscattering pum** current (I_bs) in different regimes which can be established in relation to the oscillatory frequency of the impurities and to the frequency related to the length and the renormalized velocity (by the electron-electron interactions) of the charge density modes. We investigate the role played by the spatial position of the impurity potentials. We also show how the previous infinite length results for I_bs are modified by the finite size of the system.
