Chaotic traveling rolls in Rayleigh-Bénard convection
Abstract: In this paper we investigate two-dimensional (2D) Rayleigh-Bénard convection using direct numerical simulation in Boussinesq fluids of Prandtl number $P = 6.8$ confined between thermally conducting plates. We show through the simulation that in a small range of reduced Rayleigh number $r$ ($770 < r < 890$) the 2D rolls move chaotically in a direction normal to the roll axis. The lateral shift of… ▽ More

Self-organised criticality and 1/f noise in single-channel current of voltage-dependent anion channel
Abstract: Noise profile of Voltage Dependent Anion Channel (VDAC) is investigated in open channel state. Single-channel currents through VDAC from mitochondria of rat brain reconstituted into a planar lipid bilayer are recorded under different voltage clamped conditions across the membrane. Power spectrum analysis of current indicates powerlaw noise of 1/f nature. Moreover, this 1/f nature of the open cha… ▽ More

Universal Scaling Laws for Large Events in Driven Nonequilibrium Systems
Abstract: For many driven-nonequilibrium systems, the probability distribution functions of magnitude and recurrence-time of large events follow a powerlaw indicating a strong temporal correlation. In this paper we argue why these probability distribution functions are ubiquitous in driven nonequilibrium systems, and we derive universal scaling laws connecting the magnitudes, recurrence-time, and spatial… ▽ More

Towards the Scale Invariant Cosmology
Abstract: An argument is made to show that the singularity in the General Theory of Relativity (GTR) is the expression of a non-Machian feature. It can be avoided with a scale-invariant dynamical theory, a property lacking in GTR. It is further argued that the global non-conservation of energy in GTR also results from the lack of scale-invariance and the field formulation presented by several authors can… ▽ More

Incompressible Turbulence as Nonlocal Field Theory
Abstract: It is well known that incompressible turbulence is nonlocal in real space because sound speed is infinite in incompressible fluids. The equation in Fourier space indicates that it is nonlocal in Fourier space as well. Contrast this with Burgers equation which is local in real space. Note that the sound speed in Burgers equation is zero. In our presentation we will contrast these two equations us… ▽ More

Energy Flux and Bottleneck Effect in Turbulence
Abstract: Past numerical simulations and experiments of turbulence exhibit a hump in the inertial range, called the bottleneck effect. In this paper we show that sufficiently large inertial range (four decades) is required for an effective energy cascade. We propose that the bottleneck effect is due to the insufficient inertial range available in the reported simulations and experiments. To facilitate the… ▽ More

Statistical Theory of Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence: Recent Results
Abstract: In this review article we will describe recent developments in statistical theory of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. Kraichnan and Iroshnikov first proposed a phenomenology of MHD turbulence where Alfven time-scale dominates the dynamics, and the energy spectrum E(k) is proportional to k^{-3/2}. In the last decade, many numerical simulations show that spectral index is closer to 5/3, which… ▽ More

Local shell-to-shell energy transfer via nonlocal Interactions in fluid turbulence
Abstract: In this paper we analytically compute the strength of nonlinear interactions in a triad, and the energy exchanges between wavenumber shells in incompressible fluid turbulence. The computation has been done using first-order perturbative field theory. In three dimension, magnitude of triad interactions is large for nonlocal triads, and small for local triads. On Generation of magnetic field in astrophysical bodies
Abstract: In this letter we compute energy transfer rates from velocity field to magnetic field in MHD turbulence using field-theoretic method. The striking result of our field theoretic calculation is that there is a large energy transfer rate from the large-scale velocity field to the large-scale magnetic field. We claim that the growth of large-scale magnetic energy is primarily due to this transfer. W… ▽ More
