The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on a diamond-decorated square lattice exhibits an intriguing temperature-driven phase transition in a magnetic field between a classical ferrimagnetic phase and a quantum monomer-dimer phase. A generalized decoration-iteration transformation accurately maps the considered model to an effective spin-1/2 Ising model on a square lattice with temperature-dependent effective interactions and field, whereby the effective field vanishes at the phase boundary separating the classical ferrimagnetic phase from the quantum monomer-dimer phase. Typical features of the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat in the vicinity of discontinuous and continuous thermal phase transitions between the classical ferrimagnetic phase and the quantum monomer-dimer phase are elucidated.

Innovative ways of harnessing sustainable energy are needed to meet the world's ever-increasing energy demands. Supercapacitors may contribute, as they can convert waste heat to electricity through cyclic charging and discharging at different temperatures. Herein, we use an analytically-solvable model of a cylindrical pore filled with a single file of ions to identify optimal conditions for heat-to-electricity conversion with supercapacitors. We consider Stirling and Ericsson-like charging cycles and show that the former or latter yields more work when a supercapacitor operates under charge or voltage limitations, respectively. Both cycles yield the most work for pores almost as narrow as the size of the ions they contain, as is the case for energy storage with supercapacitors. In contrast to energy storage, which can be maximised by ionophobic pores, such pores do not yield the best heat-to-electricity conversion, independently of the applied potential. Instead, we find that for a given pore size, a moderately ionophilic pore harvests more work than ionophobic and strongly ionophilic pores.

The thermal phase transitions of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the diamond-decorated square lattice in a magnetic field are investigated using a decoration-iteration transformation and classical Monte Carlo simulations. A generalized decoration-iteration transformation maps this model exactly onto an effective classical Ising model on the square lattice with temperature-dependent effective nearest-neighbor interactions and magnetic field strength. The effective field vanishes along a ground-state phase boundary of the original model, separating a ferrimagnetic and a quantum monomer-dimer phase. At finite temperatures this phase boundary gives rise to an exactly solvable surface of discontinuous (first-order) phase transitions, which terminates in a line of Ising critical points. The existence of discontinuous reentrant phase transitions within a narrow parameter regime is reported and explained in terms of the low-energy excitations from both phases. These exact results, obtained from the map** to the zero-field effective Ising model are corroborated by classical Monte Carlo simulations of the effective model.

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the frustrated diamond-decorated square lattice is known to feature various zero-field ground-state phases, consisting of extended monomer-dimer and dimer-tetramer ground states as well as a ferrimagnetic regime. Using a combination of analytical arguments, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), exact diagonalization, as well as sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations, we investigate the properties of this system and the related Lieb lattice in the presence of a finite magnetic field, addressing both the ground-state phase diagram as well as several thermodynamic properties. In addition to the zero-field ground states, we find at high magnetic field a spin-canted phase with a continuously rising magnetization for increasing magnetic field strength, as well as the fully polarized paramagnetic phase. At intermediate field strength, we identify a first-order quantum phase transition line between the ferrimagnetic and the monomer-dimer regime. This first-order line extends to finite temperatures, terminating in a line of critical points that belong to the universality class of the two-dimensional Ising model.

Understanding charge storage in low-dimensional electrodes is crucial for develo** novel ecologically friendly devices for capacitive energy storage and conversion, water desalination, etc. Exactly-solvable models allow in-depth analyses and essential physical insights into the charging mechanisms. So far, however, such analytical approaches have been mainly limited to lattice models. Herein, we develop a versatile, exactly-solvable, one-dimensional off-lattice model for charging single-file pores. Unlike the lattice model, this model shows an excellent quantitative agreement with three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations. With analytical calculations and simulations, we show that the differential capacitance can be bell-shaped (one peak), camel-shaped (two peaks), or have four peaks. Transformations between these capacitance shapes can be induced by changing pore ionophilicity, cation-anion size asymmetry, or by adding solvent. We find that the camel-shaped capacitance, characteristic of dilute electrolytes, appears for strongly ionophilic pores with high ion densities, which we relate to charging mechanisms specific to narrow pores. We also derive a large-voltage asymptotic expression for the capacitance, showing that the capacitance decays to zero as the inverse square of the voltage, $C \sim u^{-2}$. This dependence follows from hard-core interactions and is not captured by the lattice model.

It is evidenced that effective lattice-gas models of hard-core monomers and dimers afford a proper description of low-temperature features of spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond and octahedral chains. Besides monomeric particles assigned within the localized-magnon theory to bound one- and two-magnon eigenstates, the effective monomer-dimer lattice-gas model additionally includes dimeric particles assigned to a singlet-tetramer (singlet-hexamer) state as a cornerstone of dimer-tetramer (tetramer-hexamer) ground state of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond (octahedral) chain. A feasibility of the effective description is confirmed through the exact diagonalization and finite-temperature Lanczos methods. Both quantum spin chains display rich ground-state phase diagrams including discontinuous as well as continuous field-driven phase transitions, whereby the specific heat shows in vicinity of the former phase transitions an extraordinary low-temperature peak coming from a highly-degenerate manifold of low-lying excitations.

The former model is widely used for a description of magnetic properties of the layered compound SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, which exhibits a series of fractional magnetization plateaux at sufficiently low temperatures. Using the novel type of many-body perturbation theory we have found the effective model of interacting triplet excitations with the extended hard-core repulsion, which accurately recovers 1/8, 1/6 and 1/4 magnetization plateaux for moderate values of the interdimer coupling. A possible existence of a striking quantum phase of bound triplons is also revealed at low enough magnetic fields.

Quantum spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg trimerized chain with strong intradimer and weak monomer-dimer coupling constants is studied using the novel many-body perturbation expansion, which is developed from the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain preserving correlations between all interacting spins of the trimerized chain unlike the standard perturbation scheme developed on the grounds of noninteracting spin monomers and dimers. The Heisenberg trimerized chain shows the intermediate one-third plateau, which was also observed in the magnetization curve of the polymeric compound Cu$_3$(P$_2$O$_6$OH)$_2$ affording its experimental realization. Within the modified strong-coupling method we have obtained the effective Hamiltonians for the magnetic-field range from zero to one-third plateau, and from one-third plateau to the saturation magnetization. The second-order perturbation theory shows reliable results even for the moderate ratio between weaker dimer-monomer and stronger intradimer coupling constants. We have also examined thermodynamic properties and recovered the low-temperature peak in the specific heat. The accuracy of the developed method is tested through a comparison with numerical density-matrix renormalization group and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Using the results for the effective Hamiltonian we suggest straightforward procedure for finding the microscopic parameters of one-dimensional trimerized magnetic compounds with strong intradimer and weak monomer-dimer couplings. We found the refined values for the coupling constants of Cu$_3$(P$_2$O$_6$OH)$_2$ by matching the theoretical results with the available experimental data for the magnetization and magnetic susceptibility in a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields.

The ground state and magnetization process of an exactly solved spin-$1/2$ Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain with two different gyromagnetic factors of the Ising and Heisenberg spins are investigated in detail. It is shown that the investigated quantum spin chain exhibits up to seven possible ground states depending on a mutual interplay of the magnetic field, intra- and inter-dimer coupling constants. More specifically, the frustrated and modulated quantum antiferromagnetic phases are responsible in zero-temperature magnetization curves for a zero magnetization plateau. The intermediate 1/11- and 5/11-plateaus emerge due to the frustrated and modulated quantum ferrimagnetic phases, while the intermediate 9/11- and 10/11-plateaus can be attributed to the quantum and classical ferrimagnetic phases. It is conjectured that the magnetization plateau experimentally observed in a high-field magnetization curve of 3$d$-4$f$ heterobimetallic coordination polymer [\{Dy(hfac)$_2$(CH$_3$OH)\}$_2$\{Cu(dmg)(Hdmg)\}$_2$]$_n$ (H$_2$dmg $=$ dimethylglyoxime; Hhfac $=$ 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione) could be attributed to the classical and quantum ferrimagnetic phases.

Spin-1/2 orthogonal-dimer chain composed of regularly alternating Ising and Heisenberg dimers is exactly solved in a presence of the magnetic field by the transfer-matrix method. It is shown that the ground-state phase diagram involves in total six different phases. Besides the ferromagnetic phase with fully polarized spins one encounters the singlet antiferromagnetic and modulated antiferromagnetic phases manifested in zero-temperature magnetization curves as zero magnetization plateau, the frustrated ferrimagnetic and singlet ferrimagnetic phases causing existence of an intermediate one-half magnetization plateau, and finally, the intriguing modulated ferrimagnetic phase with a translationally broken symmetry leading to an unconventional one-quarter magnetization plateau. The quantum character of individual ground states is quantified via the concurrence, which measures a strength of the bipartite entanglement within the pure and mixed states of the Heisenberg dimers at zero as well as nonzero temperatures. The parameter region, where the bipartite entanglement may be in contrast to general expectations reinforced upon increasing of temperature and/or magnetic field, is elucidated.

We consider the spin-1/2 isotropic $XY$ chain in an external magnetic field directed along $z$ axis with periodically varying $g$-factors. To reveal the effects of regularly alternating $g$-factors, we calculate various static and dynamic equilibrium quantities in the ground state and at finite temperatures. We demonstrate that because of the regularly alternating $g$-factors the saturation field may disappear and the field dependence of the susceptibility in the ground state has additional logarithmic singularity at zero field. Moreover, the zero-field susceptibility has a logarithmic singularity as $T\to 0$. Furthermore, the dynamic structure factors exhibit much more structure in the "wave vector -- frequency" plane that can be traced out to modifications of the two-fermion excitation continua which exclusively determine $S_{zz}(κ,ω)$ and dominate the properties of $S_{xx}(κ,ω)$. We discuss what changes can be observed in dynamic experiments on the corresponding substances.

Magnetoelectric effect of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising ladder in a presence of the external electric and magnetic fields is rigorously examined by taking into account Katsura-Nagaosa-Balatsky mechanism. It is shown that the applied electric field may control a quantum phase transition between the Néel (stripy) ordered phase and the disordered paramagnetic phase. The staggered magnetization vanishes according to a power law with the Ising-type critical exponent 1/8, the electric polarization exhibits a weak singularity and the dielectric susceptibility shows a logarithmic divergence at this particular quantum phase transition. The external electric field may alternatively invoke a discontinuous phase transition accompanied with abrupt jumps of the dielectric polarization and susceptibility on assumption that the external magnetic field becomes nonzero.

The investigated model has in a magnetic field an extraordinarily rich ground-state phase diagram, which includes the uniform and cluster-based Haldane phases, two ferrimagnetic phases of Lieb-Mattis type, two quantum spin liquids and two bound magnon crystals in addition to the fully polarized ferromagnetic phase. The lowest-energy eigenstates in a highly-frustrated parameter region belong to flat bands and hence, low-temperature thermodynamics above the bound magnon-crystal ground states can be satisfactorily described within the localized-magnon approach. The spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedral chain with regularly alternating monomeric and square-plaquette sites is investigated using various analytical and numerical methods: variational technique, localized-magnon approach, exact diagonalization (ED) and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The model belongs to the class of flat-band systems and it has a rich ground-state phase diagram including phases with spontaneously broken translational symmetry. Moreover, it exhibits an anomalous low-temperature thermodynamics close to continuous or discontinuous field-driven quantum phase transitions between three quantum ferrimagnetic phases, tetramer-hexamer phase, monomer-tetramer phase, localized-magnon phase and two different spin-liquid phases. If the intra-plaquette coupling is at least twice as strong as the monomer-plaquette coupling, the variational method furnishes a rigorous proof of the monomer-tetramer ground state in a low-field region and the localized-magnon approach provides an exact evidence of a single magnon trapped at each square plaquette in a high-field region. In the rest of parameter space we have numerically studied the ground-state phase diagram and magnetization process using DMRG and ED methods. It is shown that the zero-temperature magnetization curve may involve up to four intermediate plateaus at zero, one-fifth, two-fifth and three-fifth of the saturation magnetization, while the specific heat exhibits a striking low-temperature peak in a vicinity of discontinuous quantum phase transitions.

Exact ground states of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice with Heisenberg intra-dimer and Ising inter-dimer couplings are found by two independent rigorous procedures. The first method uses a unitary transformation to establish a map** correspondence with an effective classical spin model, while the second method relies on the derivation of an effective hard-core boson model by continuous unitary transformations. Both methods lead to equivalent effective Hamiltonians providing a convincing proof that the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice exhibits a zero-temperature magnetization curve with just two intermediate plateaus at one-third and one-half of the saturation magnetization, which correspond to stripe and checkerboard orderings of singlets and polarized triplets, respectively. The nature of the remarkable stripe order relevant to the one-third plateau is thoroughly investigated with the help of the corresponding exact eigenvector. The rigorous results for the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice are compared with the analogous results for the purely classical Ising and fully quantum Heisenberg models. Finally, we discuss to what extent the critical fields of SrCu2(BO3)2 and (CuCl)Ca2Nb3O10 can be described within the suggested Ising-Heisenberg model.

The frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg ladder with Heisenberg intra-rung and Ising inter-rung interactions is exactly solved in a longitudinal magnetic field by taking advantage of the local conservation of the total spin on each rung and the transfer-matrix method. We have rigorously calculated the ground-state phase diagram, magnetization process, magnetocaloric effect and basic thermodynamic quantities for the model, which can be alternatively viewed as an Ising-Heisenberg tetrahedral chain. It is demonstrated that a stepwise magnetization curve with an intermediate plateau at a half of the saturation magnetization is also reflected in respective stepwise changes of the concurrence serving as a measure of bipartite entanglement. The ground-state phase diagram and zero-temperature magnetization curves of the Ising-Heisenberg tetrahedral chain are contrasted with the analogous results of the purely quantum Heisenberg tetrahedral chain, which have been obtained through density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. While both ground-state phase diagrams fully coincide in the regime of weak inter-rung interaction, the purely quantum Heisenberg tetrahedral chain develops Luttinger spin-liquid and Haldane phases for strongly coupled rungs which are absent in the Ising-Heisenberg counterpart model.

The quantum spin-1/2 orthogonal-dimer chain with the Heisenberg intra-dimer and Ising inter-dimer interactions in a magnetic field is considered by a rigorous approach. The model conserves the z-component of total spin on vertical Heisenberg bonds and this property is used to calculate exactly the partition function using the transfer-matrix method. We have found the ground-state phase diagram of the given model in a magnetic field as well as the macroscopic degeneracy along field-induced transitions accompanied with the magnetization jumps. The model exhibits two intermediate fractional plateaux at one-quarter and one-half of the saturation magnetization. We have examined the effect of the exchange anisotropy in the XXZ Heisenberg intra-dimer interaction on the ground state. It is shown that the one-quarter and one-half plateaux may disappear from the magnetization curve for the ferromagnetic Heisenberg intra-dimer interaction. We have also rigorously studied the effect of frustrated interactions on the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the model and show how the macroscopic degeneracy of the ground state is reflected in the low-temperature behavior of the magnetization, entropy and specific heat. A possibility of observing enhanced magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization is discussed in detail.

The quantum spin-1/2 two-leg ladder with an anisotropic XYZ Heisenberg intra-rung interaction and Ising inter-rung interactions is treated by means of a rigorous approach based on the unitary transformation. The particular case of the considered model with X-X intra-rung interaction resembles a quantum compass ladder with additional frustrating diagonal Ising interactions. Using an appropriately chosen unitary transformation, the model under investigation may be reduced to a transverse Ising chain with composite spins, and one may subsequently find the ground state quite rigorously. We obtain a ground-state phase diagram and analyze the interplay of the competition between several factors: the XYZ anisotropy in the Heisenberg intra-rung coupling, the Ising interaction along the legs, and the frustrating diagonal Ising interaction. The investigated model shows extraordinarily diverse ground-state phase diagrams including several unusual quantum ordered phases, two different disordered quantum paramagnetic phases, as well as discontinuous or continuous quantum phase transitions between those phases.

Ground-state behaviour of the frustrated quantum spin-1/2 two-leg ladder with the Heisenberg intra-rung and Ising inter-rung interactions is examined in detail. The investigated model is transformed to the quantum Ising chain with composite spins in an effective transverse and longitudinal field by employing either the bond-state representation or the unitary transformation. It is shown that the ground state of the Heisenberg-Ising ladder can be descended from three exactly solvable models: the quantum Ising chain in a transverse field, the 'classical' Ising chain in a longitudinal field or the spin-chain model in a staggered longitudinal-transverse field. The last model serves in evidence of the staggered bond phase with alternating singlet and triplet bonds on the rungs of two-leg ladder, which appears at moderate values of the external magnetic field and consequently leads to a fractional plateau at a half of the saturation magnetization. The ground-state phase diagram totally consists of five ordered and one quantum disordered phase, which are separated from each other either by the lines of discontinuous or continuous quantum phase transitions. The order parameters are exactly calculated for all five ordered phases and the quantum disordered phase is characterized through different short-range spin-spin correlations.

The Jordan-Wigner transformation is applied to study magnetic properties of the quantum spin-1/2 $XX$ model on the diamond chain. Generally, the Hamiltonian of this quantum spin system can be represented in terms of spinless fermions in the presence of a gauge field and different gauge-invariant ways of assigning the spin-fermion transformation are considered. Additionally, we analyze general properties of a free-fermion chain, where all gauge terms are neglected and discuss their relevance for the quantum spin system. A consideration of interaction terms in the fermionic Hamiltonian rests upon the Hartree-Fock procedure after fixing the appropriate gauge. Finally, we discuss the magnetic properties of this quantum spin model at zero as well as non-zero temperatures and analyze the validity of the approximation used through a comparison with the results of the exact diagonalization method for finite (up to 36 spins) chains. Besides the $m=1/3$ plateau the most prominent feature of the magnetization curve is a jump at intermediate field present for certain values of the frustrating vertical bond.

Under the assumption of a half filling of each couple of the decorating sites, the investigated model system exhibits a remarkable spontaneous antiferromagnetic long-range order with an obvious quantum reduction of the staggered magnetization. It is shown that the critical temperature of the spontaneously long-range ordered quantum antiferromagnet displays an outstanding non-monotonic dependence on a ratio between the kinetic term and the Ising-type exchange interaction.

We consider a spin-1/2 XY chain in a transverse (z) field with multi-site interactions. The additional terms introduced into the Hamiltonian involve products of spin components related to three adjacent sites. A Jordan-Wigner transformation leads to a simple bilinear Fermi form for the resulting Hamiltonian and hence the spin model admits a rigorous analysis. We point out the close relationships between several variants of the model which were discussed separately in previous studies. The ground-state phases (ferromagnet and two kinds of spin liquid) of the model are reflected in the dynamic structure factors of the spin chains, which are the main focus in this study. First we consider the zz dynamic structure factor reporting for this quantity a closed-form expression and analyzing the properties of the two-fermion (particle-hole) excitation continuum which governs the dynamics of transverse spin component fluctuations and of some other local operator fluctuations. Then we examine the xx dynamic structure factor which is governed by many-fermion excitations, reporting both analytical and numerical results. We discuss some easily recognized features of the dynamic structure factors which are signatures for the presence of the three-site interactions.

We compare the obtained (approximate) results with exact ones (1D limit, square-lattice Ising model) and other approximate ones (linear spin-wave theory and exact diagonalization data for finite lattices of up to N=36 sites supplemented by finite-size scaling). We discuss the ground-state and thermodynamic properties in dependence on the spatial and exchange interaction anisotropies.
