We investigate Eigen's model for the evolution of the genetic code of microorganisms using a novel method based on population dynamics analysis. This model, for a given number of offspring, determines long-term survival as a function of the "genetic" information length and copy error probability. There exists a maximum threshold for the quantity of information that can be consistently preserved through the process of evolution within a population of perfectly replicating sequences, meaning no errors are allowed. With our formula, we expand upon the traditional error threshold formula of Eigen's theory and introduce a new expression for general cases where the self-reproduction process allows up to any integer number of copying errors per digit per replication step.

The structure of unimodular gravity (UG) is invariant to a subclass of diffeomorphism, the transverse diffeomorphism, due to the unimodular condition ($\sqrt{-g}=ε=cte$). Consequently, there is a freedom to define how the conservation laws of the energy-momentum tensor in unimodular gravity in the cosmological context. One of the main characteristics of the complete system of equations that describe cosmological dynamics in UG is that they form an underdetermined system if the usual conservation law of the energy-momentum tensor is not used in your structure, that is, it is necessary to insert extra information into the system to solve the complete set of equations. In this article, we propose the construction of a background cosmological model based on the description of a holographic dark energy component with a cutoff of the order of Ricci scalar in non-conservative UG. Although this choice is indeed a new addition of information to the cosmological system, the complete set of equations remains underdetermined, however, the new feature of this cosmological model is the appearance of an interaction between matter and dark energy. Indeed, this is a well-known characteristic of cosmological models in which we have holographic dark energy density. Consequently, we propose an ansatz to the interaction term $Q=βH ρ_{m}$, and obtain the cosmological parameters of our model. We found a viable universe model with similar characteristics to the $Λ\mathrm{CDM}$ model. We performed statistical analysis of the background model using the "Cosmic Chronometer" (CC) data for $H(z)$, and obtain as a result using Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), and the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) as model selection criteria that $Λ\mathrm{CDM}$ prevails as the best model. However, the proposed model is competitive when compared to the cosmological model $ω\mathrm{CDM}$.

A Newtonian-like theory inspired by the Brans-Dicke gravitational Lagrangian has been recently proposed in Ref. arXiv:2009.04434(v4). This work demonstrates that the modified gravitational force acting on a test particle is analogous to that derived from the Manev potential. Specifically, an additional term $\propto r^{-3}$ emerges alongside the conventional Newtonian component. We analyse the predicted expression for the pericenter advance and the Roche limit and use them to constraint the theory's single free parameter $ω$ which is analogous to the Brans-Dicke parameter. At the same time this theory is able to solve the advance of Mercury's perihelion, we also show that there is no relevant impact on the Roche limit in comparison to the well known Newtonian results.

We review the status of $f(R,T)$ cosmological models, where $T$ is the trace of the energy momentum tensor $T^{μν}$. We start focusing on the modified Friedmann equations for the minimally coupled gravitational Lagrangian of the type $f(R,T)=R +αe^{βT} + γ_{n} T^{n}$. We show that in such a minimally coupled case there exists a useful constraining relation between the effective fractionary total matter density with an arbitrary equation of state parameter and the modified gravity parameters. With this association the modified gravity sector can be independently constrained using estimations of the gas mass fraction in galaxy clusters. Using cosmological background cosmic chronometers data and demanding the universe is old enough to accommodate the existence of Galactic globular clusters with ages of at least $\sim 14$ Gyrs we find a narrow range of the modified gravity free parameter space in which this class of theories remains viable for the late time cosmological evolution. This preferred parameter space region accommodates the $Λ$CDM limit of $f(R,T)$ models. We also work out the non-minimally coupled case in the metric-affine formalism and find that there are no viable cosmologies in the latter situation. However, when analysing the cosmological dynamics including a radiation component, we find that this energy density interacts with the matter field and it does not scale according to the typical behavior. We conclude stating that $f(R,T)$ gravity is not able to provide a full cosmological scenario and should be ruled out as a modified gravity alternative to the dark energy phenomena.

We consider the separable model $f (R, T ) = χ(R) + \varphi(T )$ and shown that, for perfect fluids, the dynamical equations are sufficient to determine how $\varphi$ depends on $T$, independently of the matter state equation and the geometry of space-time. Imposing the energy-momentum tensor conservation we obtain that $\varphi$ must be linear in $T$. However, the $T$ dependence is severely constrained using the full Will-Nordtvedt version of the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism. The result of the PPN analysis is discussed and in addition it is shown that the diffeomorphism invariance of the matter action imposes strong constraints on conservative versions of $f(R,T)$ gravity.

Essentially, it is based on the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian with an additional constraint on the determinant of the metric. It can be explicitly shown that Unimodular Gravity can be recast as General Relativity in presence of a cosmological constant. This fact has led to many discussions on the equivalence of both theories at classical and quantum levels. Here we present an analysis focused on the classical scalar perturbations around a cosmological background. The discussion is extended for the case where a non-minimal coupled scalar field is introduced. Our results indicate that the equivalence is not verified completely at perturbative level.

Leveraging our obtained solutions, we have conducted an analytic ray-tracing in both spacetimes. We have obtained direct images, lensing rings and photon rings for equatorial disks considering inclined locally static observers. Images corresponding to n=(2,3) exhibit a significantly closer resemblance to the critical curve as compared to the n=1 image. This highlights the remarkable potential of these higher-order images as robust testing grounds for General Relativity (GR). Furthermore in both spacetimes, we have obtained analytical solutions for the critical parameters governing the structure of the photon ring and analyzed these parameters in details.

This work is geared towards analysis of shadows cast by Kerr-de Sitter (KdS) and Kerr-de Sitter Revisited (RKdS) black holes. Considering observers in the vicinity of the static radius, we derive the impact parameters defining the apparent positions of the shadows. Such observers are of interest to our work because embedding diagrams have shown that de Sitter space-time is analogous to an asymptotically flat one in the vicinity of the static radius. We also perform a comparative analysis between our result with that in Ref.[1]. Furthermore, we numerically obtain the radii of curvature, vertical diameters and horizontal diameters of the shadows. We find that for $Λ=1.11\times 10^{-52} m^{-2}$, M87* observations cannot distinguish a RKdS black hole shadow from that of a Kerr black hole. Additionally, for the same value of $Λ$, KdS and RKdS black hole shadows are identical. Previously, it has also been shown that when $Λ=1.11\times 10^{-52} m^{-2}$, KdS and Kerr black hole shadows are indistinguishable. Utilizing the 2017 EHT observations of M87* on the allowed range of the characteristic radius of the shadow, we obtain constraints on both black holes. When, a/M>0.812311, we observe that large angles of inclination ($θ>30.5107^{\circ}$) do not pass the constraints for both KdS and RKdS black holes.

Unimodular gravity is characterized by an extra condition with respect to General Relativity: the determinant of the metric is constant. This extra condition leads to a more restricted class of invariance by coordinate transformation. Even though, if the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor is imposed in unimodular gravity, the General Relativity theory is recovered with an additional integration constant which is associated to the cosmological term $Λ$. However, if the energy-momentum tensor does not conserve separately, a new geometric structure appears with potentially observational signatures. In this text, we consider the evolution of gravitational waves in the nonconservative unimodular gravity, showing how it differs from the usual signatures in the standard model.

In this work we review the issue of imposing the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor as a necessary condition to recover the equivalence between the unimodular gravity and General Relativity (GR) equipped with a cosmological constant. This procedure is usually interpreted as an {\it ad hoc} imposition on the unimodular theory's structure. Whereas the consequences of avoiding the conservation of the total energy-momentum tensor has been already introduced in the literature, it has been not widely explored so far. We study an expanding universe sourced by a single effective perfect fluid such that the null divergence of its energy-momentum tensor is not imposed. As we shall show, in this scheme, the unimodular theory has its own conservation equation obtained from the Bianchi identities. We explore the evolution of the homogeneous and isotropic expanding background and show that a viable cosmological scenario exists. Also, we consider scalar perturbations with particular attention given to the gauge issue. We show that contrary to the traditional unimodular theory where the synchronous and longitudinal (newtonian) gauge for cosmological perturbations are not permitted, if the conservation of the energy-momentum is relaxed the scalar perturbations in the synchronous condition survive and present a growing mode behavior. We study therefore a new cosmological scenario in which the dynamics of the universe transits from the radiative phase directly to a accelerated one but allowing thus for structure formation.

We study an expanding two-fluid model of non-relativistic dark matter and radiation which are allowed to interact during a certain time span and to establish an approximate thermal equilibrium. Such interaction which generates an effective bulk viscous pressure at background level is expected to be relevant for times around the transition from radiation to matter dominance. We quantify the magnitude of this pressure for dark matter particles masses within the range $1 {\rm eV} \lesssim m_χ \lesssim 10 {\rm eV}$ around the matter-radiation equality epoch (i.e., redshift $z_{\rm eq}\sim 3400$) and demonstrate that the existence of a transient bulk viscosity has consequences which may be relevant for addressing current tensions of the standard cosmological model: i) the additional (negative) pressure contribution modifies the expansion rate around $z_{\rm eq}$, yielding a larger $H_0$ value and ii) large-scale structure formation is impacted by suppressing the amplitude of matter overdensity growth via a new viscous friction-term contribution to the Mészáros effect. As a result, both the $H_0$ and the $S_8$ tensions of the current standard cosmological model are significantly alleviated.

Apart from the familiar structure firmly-rooted in the general relativistic field equations where the energy--momentum tensor has a null divergence i.e., it conserves, there exists a considerable number of extended theories of gravity allowing departures from the usual conservative framework. Many of these theories became popular in the last few years, aiming to describe the phenomenology behind dark matter and dark energy. However, within these scenarios, it is common to see attempts to preserve the conservative property of the energy--momentum tensor. Most of the time, it is done by means of some additional constraint that ensures the validity of the standard conservation law, as long as this option is available in the theory. However, if no such extra constraint is available, the theory will inevitably carry a non-trivial conservation law as part of its structure. In this work, we review some of such proposals discussing the theoretical construction leading to the non-conservation of the energy--momentum tensor.

The current Universe is composed by a mixture of relativistic species, baryonic matter, dark matter and dark energy which evolve in a non-trivial way at perturbative level. An advanced description of the cosmological dynamics should include non-standard features beyond the simplistic approach idealized by the standard cosmology in which cosmic components do not interact, are adiabatic and dissipationless. We promote a full perturbative analysis of linear scalar perturbations of a non-interacting cosmological model containing baryons, dark matter (both pressureless) and a scalar field allowing for the presence of relative entropic perturbations between the three fluids. Assuming an effective scalar-field sound speed equal to one and neglecting anisotropic stresses we establish a new set of equations for the scalar cosmological perturbations. As a consequence of this new approach, we show that tiny departures from a constant scalar field equation of state $w_S=-1$ damage structure formation in a non-acceptable manner. Hence, by strongly constraining $w_S$ our results provide compelling evidence in favor of the standard cosmological model and rule out a large class of dynamical dark energy models

Recently Risaliti \& Lusso [Nature Astron. 3 (2019) 3 272] reported new measurements of the expansion rate of the Universe by constructing the Hubble diagram of 1598 quasars in the redshift range $0.5<z<5.5$. It is claimed a $4σ$ tension with the standard concordance $Λ$CDM concerning both the fractionary matter density $Ω_{m0}$ and the dark energy equation of state parameter $w_{de}$ standard values. In this work we promote an independent analysis of the same data set using a model-independent estimator for cosmic acceleration. Our results corroborate that the source of such tension can be related to the $Ω_{m0}$ value with a reasonable indication of a higher $Ω_{m0}$ value ($Ω_{m0} \gtrsim 0.4$). On the other hand, we find that the role played by $w_{de}$ on the claimed tension is weak. We also discuss the use of this estimator as a "quality tool" to test the robustness of Hubble diagrams. We conclude claiming that the Quasars data can not yet be seen as a reliable cosmological tool since they can not even state the universe experienced an accelerated expansion phase.

Within the effective field theory approach to cosmic acceleration, the background expansion can be specified separately from the gravitational modifications. We explore the impact of modified gravity in a background different from a cosmological constant plus cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) on the stability and cosmological observables, including covariance between gravity and expansion parameters. In No Slip Gravity the more general background allows more gravitational freedom, including both positive and negative Planck mass running. We examine the effects on cosmic structure growth, as well as showing that a viable positive integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect crosscorrelation easily arises from this modified gravity theory. Using current data we constrain parameters with a Monte Carlo analysis, finding a maximum running $|α_M|\lesssim 0.03$. We provide the modified {\tt hi\_class} code publicly on GitHub, now enabling computation and inclusion of the redshift space distortion observable $fσ_8$ as well as the No Slip Gravity modifications.

We study static symmetric solutions in the context of a gravitational theory based on a action-dependent Lagrangian. Such theory has been designed as a setup to implement dissipative effects into the traditional principle of least action. Dissipation appears therefore from the first principles and has a purely geometric origin. An interesting feature of this theory is the existence of a coupling four-vector $λ_μ$, which in an expanding background is related to cosmological bulk viscosity. General Relativity is recovered with a vanishing $λ_μ$. We analyse the existence of equilibrium solutions of static configurations aiming to describe astrophysical objects. We find out that the existence of static spherically symmetric configurations occurs only in the particular scenario with vanishing $λ_t$, $λ_r$ and $λ_φ$ components i.e, $λ_μ=\{0,0,λ_θ,0\}$. Thus, the component $λ_θ$ is the unique available parameter of the theory in the astrophysical context. This result severely constrains the existence of this sort of gravitational theories. We proceed then verifying the impact of $λ_θ$ on the stability and the mass-radius configurations for a reasonable equation of state for the cold dense matter inside compact stars. We further investigate the relativistic spherical collapse in order to track the structure of geometrical singularities appearing in the theory.

Extensions of Einstein's General Relativity (GR) can formally be given a GR structure in which additional geometric degrees of freedom are mapped on an effective energy-momentum tensor. The corresponding effective cosmic medium can then be modeled as an imperfect fluid within GR. The imperfect fluid structure allows us to include, on a phenomenological basis, anisotropic stresses and energy fluxes which are considered as potential signatures for deviations from the cosmological standard $Λ$-cold-dark-matter ($Λ$CDM) model. As an example, we consider the dynamics of a scalar-tensor extension of the standard model, the $e_ΦΛ$CDM model. We constrain the magnitudes of anisotropic pressure and energy flux with the help of redshift-space distortion (RSD) data for the matter growth function $f σ_8$.

We develop a cosmological model based on action-dependent Lagrangian theories. The main feature here is the nonconservation of the energy momentum tensor due to the nontrivial geometrical construction of the theory. We provide the basic set of equations necessary to study both the cosmological background expansion as well as the linear matter perturbation growth. We show that the simplest realization of the Universe as described by only one component is not viable as expected from the existing correspondence between this model and the case of viscous cosmological fluids. However, modeling the energy content of the Universe as composed by two pressureless fluids, i.e., one a typical cold dark matter fluid and the other a pressureless dark energy fluid which is responsible for driving the late-time acceleration expansion, is qualitatively compatible with observational data.

Cosmological scalar perturbation theory studied in the Newtonian gauge depends on two potentials $Φ$ and $Ψ$. In General Relativity (GR) they must coincide ($Φ=Ψ$) in the absence of anisotropic stresses sourced by the energy momentum tensor. On the other hand, it is widely accepted in the literature that potential deviations from GR can be parameterized by $Φ\neq Ψ$. The latter feature is therefore present in both GR cosmologies equipped with shear viscous fluids or modified gravity. We study the evolution of scalar matter density perturbations using the redshift-space-distortion based $f(z)σ_8(z)$ data as a tool to differentiate and characterize the imprints of both scenarios. We show that in the $f(z)σ_8(z)$ evolution both scenarios yields to completely different imprints in comparison to the standard cosmology. While the current available data is not sensitive to distinguish modified gravity from viscous shear cosmologies, future precise data can be used to break this indistinguishability.

Extensions of the gravity theory in order to obtain traceless field equations have been widely considered in the literature. The leading example of such class of theories is the unimodular gravity, but there are other possibilities like the mimetic gravity and the Rastall gravity with a coupling parameter $λ= 1/2$. The unimodular gravity proposal is a very interesting approach in other to address the cosmological constant problem. When coupled to matter such theories may imply that the energy-momentum tensor is not divergence free anymore. In this paper, a unimodular type theory will be developed by evading the conservation $T^{μν}_{\, ; μ}=0$. The cosmological consequences of the later, both at background as well as for scalar and tensor perturbations, are explored. Possible further extensions of this approach are discussed as well as its connection with the traditional unimodular gravity.

We revisit a model-independent estimator for cosmic acceleration based on type Ia supernovae distance measurements. This approach does not rely on any specific theory for gravity, energy content or parameterization for the scale factor or deceleration parameter and is based on falsifying the {\it null hypothesis} that the Universe never expanded in an accelerated way. By generating mock catalogues of known cosmologies we test the robustness of this estimator establishing its limits of applicability. We detail the pros and cons of such approach. For example, we find that there are specific counterexamples in which the estimator wrongly provides evidence against acceleration in accelerating cosmologies. The dependence of the estimator on the $H_0$ value is also discussed. Finally, we update the evidence for acceleration using the recent UNION2.1 and JLA samples. Contrary to recent claims, available data strongly favors an accelerated expansion of the Universe in complete agreement with the standard $Λ$CDM model.

The novel feature where comparing with previous implementations of dissipative effects in gravity is the possible arising of such phenomena from a least action principle, so they are of a purely geometric nature. We derive the dynamical equations describing the behaviour of the cosmic background, considering a single fluid model composed by pressureles matter, whereas the dark energy is conceived as an outcome of the "geometric" dissipative process emerging in the model. Besides, adopting the synchronous gauge we obtain the first-order perturbative equations which shall describe the evolution of the matter perturbations within the linear regime.

We study structure formation using relativistic cosmological linear perturbation theory in the presence of intrinsic and relative (with respect to matter) non-adiabatic dark energy perturbations. For different dark energy models we assess the impact of non-adiabaticity on the matter growth promoting a comparison with growth rate data. The dark energy models studied lead to peculiar signatures of the (non)adiabatic nature of dark energy perturbations in the evolution of the $f σ_{8}(z)$ observable. We show that non-adiabatic DE models become close to be degenerated with respect to the $Λ$CDM model at first order in linear perturbations. This would avoid the identification of the non-adiabatic nature of dark energy using current available data. Therefore, such evidence indicates that new probes are necessary to reveal the non-adiabatic features in the dark energy sector.

On the basis of a previously established scalar-tensor extension of the $Λ$CDM model we develop an effective fluid approach for the matter growth function. This extended $Λ$CDM (henceforth $e_ΦΛ$CDM) cosmology takes into account deviations from the standard model both via a modified background expansion and by the inclusion of geometric anisotropic stresses as well as of perturbations of the geometric dark-energy equivalent. The background dynamics is governed by an explicit analytic expression for the Hubble rate in which modifications of the standard model are given in terms of a single constant parameter [1]. To close the system of fluid-dynamical perturbation equations we introduce two phenomenological parameters through which the anisotropic stress is related both to the total energy density perturbation of the cosmic substratum and to relative perturbations in the effective two-component system. We quantify the impact of deviations from the standard background, of anisotropic stresses and of non-vanishing perturbations of the effective dark-energy component on the matter growth rate function $f σ_8$ and confront the results with recent redshift-space distortion (RSD) measurements.

We propose that gravitational interactions of cosmic neutrinos with the statistically homogeneous and isotropic fluctuations of space-time leads to decoherence. This working hypothesis, which we describe by means of a Lindblad operator, is applied to the system of two- and three-flavour neutrinos undergoing vacuum oscillations and the consequences are investigated. As result of this decoherence we find that the neutrino entropy would increase as a function of initial spectral distortions, mixing angles and CP-violation phase. Subsequently we discuss the chances to discover such an increase observationally (in principle). We also present the expected flavour composition of the cosmic neutrino background after decoherence is completed. The physics of two- or three-flavour oscillation of cosmological neutrinos resembles in many aspects two- or three-level systems in atomic clocks, which were recently proposed by Weinberg for the study of decoherence phenomena.

This difference of propagations speeds for photons and gravitons has an impact in the emission of gravitational waves by binary systems. Thus, we revisit the usual quadrupolar emission of binary system for an arbitrary propagation speed of gravitational waves and obtain the corresponding period decay formula. We then use timing data from the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar and obtain that the speed of gravitational waves can only differ from the speed of light at the percentage level. This bound places tight constraints on dark energy models featuring an anomalous propagations speed for the gravitational waves.

Here, we will focus on the specific indistinguishability between a warm dark matter plus cosmological constant ($Λ$) and coupled scalar field-CDM scenarios. Although the statement of Wei et al is true for very specific conditions we present a more complete discussion on this issue and show in more detail that these models are indeed distinguishable. We show that the degeneracy breaks down since coupled models leave a specific signature in the redshift space distortion data which is absent in the uncoupled warm dark matter cosmologies. Furthermore, we complement our claim by providing the reasons which suggest that even at nonlinear level a breaking of such apparent equivalence is also expected.

By using observations of the Hulse-Taylor pulsar we constrain the gravitational wave (GW) speed to the level of $10^{-2}$. We apply this result to scalar-tensor theories that generalize Galileon 4 and 5 models, which display anomalous propagation speed and coupling to matter for GWs. We argue that this effect survives conventional screening due to the persistence of a scalar field gradient inside virialized overdensities, which effectively "pierces" the Vainshtein screening. In specific branches of solutions, our result allows to directly constrain the cosmological couplings in the effective field theory of dark energy formalism.

The key feature of the Rastall gravity is the non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor proportionally to the space-time curvature. Using realistic equations of state for the NS interior we place a conservative bound on the non-GR behaviour of the Rastall theory which should be $\lesssim 1\%$ level. This work presents the more stringent constraints on the deviations of GR caused by the Rastall proposal.

The evolution of the gravitational potential and the amplitude of the cross-correlation of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) signal with LSS surveys are calculated in detail. We properly include in our analysis the peculiarities involving the baryonic dynamics of the $Λ(t)$CDM model which were not included in previous works. Although both the $Λ(t)$CDM and the standard cosmology are in agreement with available data for the CMB-LSS correlation, the former presents a slightly higher signal which can be identified with future data.

Spherical collapse of the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) dark matter model is studied in the Thomas Fermi approximation. The evolution of the overdensity of the collapsed region and its expansion rate are calculated for two scenarios. We consider the case of a sharp phase transition (which happens when the critical temperature is reached) from the normal dark matter state to the condensate one and the case of a smooth first order phase transition where there is a continuous conversion of "normal" dark matter to the BEC phase. We present numerical results for the physics of the collapse for a wide range of the model's space parameter, i.e. the mass of the scalar particle $m_χ$ and the scattering length $l_s$. We show the dependence of the transition redshift on $m_χ$ and $l_s$. Since small scales collapse earlier and eventually before the BEC phase transition the evolution of collapsing halos in this limit is indeed the same in both the CDM and the BEC models. Differences are expected to appear only on the largest astrophysical scales. However, we argue that the BEC model is almost indistinguishable from the usual dark matter scenario concerning the evolution of nonlinear perturbations above typical clusters scales, i.e., $\gtrsim 10^{14}M_{\odot}$. This provides an analytical confirmation for recent results from cosmological numerical simulations [H.-Y. Schive {\it et al.}, Nature Physics, {\bf10}, 496 (2014)].

General Relativity is the modern theory of gravitation. It has replaced the newtonian theory in the description of the gravitational phenomena. In spite of the remarkable success of the General Relativity Theory, the newtonian gravitational theory is still largely employed, since General Relativity, in most of the cases, just makes very small corrections to the newtonian predictions. Moreover, the newtonian theory is much simpler, technically and conceptually, when compared to the relativistic theory. In this text, we discuss the possibility of extending the traditional newtonian theory in order to incorporate typical relativistic effects, but kee** the simplicity of the newtonian framework. We denominate these extensions neo-newtonian theories. These theories are discussed mainly in the contexts of cosmology and compact astrophysical objects.
