An effective toy model in $M_n(\mathbb{C})$ for selective measurements in quantum mechanics

The non-selective and selective measurements of a self-adjoint observable $A$ in quantum mechanics are interpreted as `jumps' of the state of the measured system into a decohered or pure state, respectively, characterized by the spectral projections of $A$. However, one may try to describe the measurement results as asymptotic states of a dynamical process, where the non-unitarity of time evolution arises as an effective description of the interaction of the measured system with the measuring device. The dynamics we present is a two-step dynamics: the first step is the non-selective measurement or decoherence, which is known to be described by the linear, deterministic Lindblad equation. The second step is a process from the resulted decohered state to a pure state, which is described by an effective non-linear `randomly chosen' toy model dynamics: the pure states arise as asymptotic fixed points, and their emergent probabilities are the relative volumes of their attractor regions.

The aim of this paper is to give a sharp definition of Bell's notion of local causality. To this end, first we unfold a framework, called local physical theory, integrating probabilistic and spatiotemporal concepts. Formulating local causality within this framework and classifying local physical theories by whether they obey local primitive causality --- a property rendering the dynamics of the theory causal, we then investigate what is needed for a local physical theory, with or without local primitive causality, to be locally causal. Finally, comparing Bell's local causality with the Common Cause Principles and relating both to the Bell inequalities we find a nice parallelism: Bell inequalities cannot be derived neither from local causality nor from a common cause unless the local physical theory is classical or the common cause is commuting, respectively.

Bell inequalities, understood as constraints between classical conditional probabilities, can be derived from a set of assumptions representing a common causal explanation of classical correlations. A similar derivation, however, is not known for Bell inequalities in algebraic quantum field theories establishing constraints for the expectation of specific linear combinations of projections in a quantum state. In the paper we address the question as to whether a 'common causal justification' of these non-classical Bell inequalities is possible. We will show that although the classical notion of common causal explanation can readily be generalized for the non-classical case, the Bell inequalities used in quantum theories cannot be derived from these non-classical common causes. Just the opposite is true: for a set of correlations there can be given a non-classical common causal explanation even if they violate the Bell inequalities. This shows that the range of common causal explanations in the non-classical case is wider than that restricted by the Bell inequalities.

It will be shown that for a set of spatially separated correlating events (projections) maximally violating the Clauser-Horne inequality there can be given a common causal explanation if commutativity is abandoned between the common cause and the correlating events. Moreover, the noncommuting common cause will be local and supported in the common past of the correlating events.

Reichenbach's Common Cause Principle, generalized to the quantum field theoretical setting, offers an apt tool to causally account for these superluminal correlations. In the paper we motivate first why commutativity between the common cause and the correlating events should be abandoned in the definition of the common cause. Then we show that the Noncommutative Weak Common Cause Principle holds in algebraic quantum field theory with locally finite degrees of freedom. Namely, for any pair of projections A, B supported in spacelike separated regions V_A and V_B, respectively, there is a local projection C not necessarily commuting with A and B such that C is supported within the union of the backward light cones of V_A and V_B and the set {C, non-C} screens off the correlation between A and B.

In the paper it will be shown that Reichenbach's Weak Common Cause Principle is not valid in algebraic quantum field theory with locally finite degrees of freedom in general. Namely, for any pair of projections A and B supported in spacelike separated double cones O(a) and O(b), respectively, a correlating state can be given for which there is no nontrivial common cause (system) located in the union of the backward light cones of O(a) and O(b) and commuting with the both A and B. Since noncommuting common cause solutions are presented in these states the abandonment of commutativity can modulate this result: noncommutative Common Cause Principles might survive in these models.

We show that the category of modules over a weak Hopf algebra is autonomous monoidal with semisimple unit and invertible modules. We also reveal the connection of invertible modules to left and right grouplike elements in the dual weak Hopf algebra. Defining distinguished left and right grouplike elements we derive the Radford formula for the fourth power of the antipode in a weak Hopf algebra and prove that the order of the antipode is finite up to an inner automorphism by a grouplike element in the trivial subalgebra A^T of the underlying weak Hopf algebra A.

We show that a left-rigid monoidal C^*-category with irreducible monoidal unit is also a sovereign and spherical category. Defining a Frobenius-Schur type indicator we obtain selection rules for the fusion coefficients of irreducible objects. As a main result we prove S_4-invariance of 6j-symbols in such a category.

Abstract:
Unitary representations of centrally extended map** class groups $\tilde M_{g,1}, g\geq 1$ are given in terms of a rational Hopf algebra $H$, and a related generalization of the Verlinde formula is presented. Rational Hopf algebras (certain quasitriangular weak quasi-Hopf $^*$-algebras) are expected to describe the quantum symmetry of rational field theories. In this paper methods are developped which allow for a classification of all rational Hopf algebras that are compatible with some prescribed set of fusion rules. The algebras are parametrized by the solutions of the square, pentagon and hexagon identities. As examples, we classify all solutions for fusion rules with two or three sectors, and for the level three affine $A_1$ fusion rules. We also establish several general properties of rational Hopf algebras, and we present a graphical description of the coassociator in terms of labelled tetrahedra which allows to make contact with conformal field theory fusing matrices and with invariants of three-manifolds and topological lattice field theory.

We introduce the notion of rational Hopf algebras that we think are able to describe the superselection symmetries of two dimensional rational quantum field theories. As an example we show that a six dimensional rational Hopf algebra $H$ can reproduce the fusion rules, the conformal weights, the quantum dimensions and the representation of the modular group of the chiral Ising model. $H$ plays the role of the global symmetry algebra of the chiral Ising model in the following sense: 1) a simple field algebra $\FA$ and a representation $π$ on $\HS_π$ of it is given, which contains the $c=1/2$ unitary representations of the Virasoro algebra as subrepresentations; 2) the embedding $U\colon H\to\BOH$ is such that the observable algebra $π(\OA)^-$ is the invariant subalgebra of $\BOH$ with respect to the left adjoint action of $H$ and $U(H)$ is the commutant of $π(\OA)$; 3) there exist $H$-covariant primary fields in $\BOH$, which obey generalized Cuntz algebra properties and intertwine between the inequivalent sectors of the observables.
