Konkani is a highly nasalised language which makes it unique among Indo-Aryan languages. This work investigates the acoustic-phonetic properties of Konkani oral and nasal vowels. For this study, speech samples from six speakers (3 male and 3 female) were collected. A total of 74 unique sentences were used as a part of the recording script, 37 each for oral and nasal vowels, respectively. The final data set consisted of 1135 vowel phonemes. A comparative F1-F2 plot of Konkani oral and nasal vowels is presented with an experimental result and formant analysis. The average F1, F2 and F3 values are also reported for the first time through experimentation for all nasal and oral vowels. This study can be helpful for the linguistic research on vowels and speech synthesis systems specific to the Konkani language.

It is shown that exact spherically symmetric solutions to Einstein's Field Equations exist such that, over an open region of the spacetime, they are singularity free, satisfy the dominant energy condition, represent elastic matter with a well defined constitutive function, and are such that elastic perturbations propagate causally.
Two toy-models are then built up in which a thick elastic, spherically symmetric shell with the above properties, separates two Robertson-Walker regions corresponding to different values of the curvature $k$. The junction conditions (continuity of the first and second fundamental forms) are shown to be exactly satisfied across the corresponding matching spherical surfaces.

ALFAZOA Shallow covered 900 square degrees at full sensitivity from 30° ${\leq} l {\leq} $75° and |b|$ {\leq}$ 10° and an additional 460 square degrees at limited sensitivity at latitudes up to 20°. It has an rms sensitivity of 5-7 mJy and a velocity resolution of 9 - 20.6 km s$^{-1}$, and detected 403 galaxies out to a recessional velocity of 12,000 km s$^{-1}$, with an angular resolution of 3.4' and a positional accuracy between 0.2' and 1.7'. The survey is complete above an integrated line flux $F_{HI}$ = 2.0 Jy km s$^{-1}$ for half the survey, and above $F_{HI}$ = 2.8 Jy km s$^{-1}$ for the other half.
Forty-three percent of the ALFAZOA HI detections have at least one possible optical/NIR counterpart in the literature, and an additional 16% have counterparts that only included previous HI measurements. There are fewer counterparts in regions of high extinction and for galaxies with lower HI mass. Comparing the results of the survey to the predictions of Erdogdu et al. (2006), and using their nomenclature, ALFAZOA confirms the position and extent in the ZOA of the C7, C$ζ$, Pegasus, Corona Borealis and Delphinus structures, but not of the Cygnus void. Two new structures are identified, both connected to the C7 overdensity; one extends to 35°, and the other crosses the ZOA.

The coherence between quantum states with different particle numbers --- the Fock-space coherence --- qualitatively differs from the more common Hilbert-space coherence between states with equal particle numbers. For a quantum dot with multiple channels available for transport, we find the conditions for decoupling the dynamics of the Fock-space coherence from both the Hilbert-space coherence as well as the population dynamics. We further find specific energy and coupling regimes where a long-lived resonance in the Fock-space coherence of the system is realized, even where no resonances are found either in the populations or Hilbert-space coherence. Numerical calculations show this resonance remains robust in the presence of both boson-mediated relaxation and transport through the quantum dot.

The relativistic theory of elasticity is reviewed within the spherically symmetric context with a view towards the modeling of star interiors possessing elastic properties such as theones expected in neutron stars. Emphasis is placed on generality in the main sections of the paper, and the results are then applied to specific examples. Along the way, a few general results for spacetimes admitting isometries are deduced, and their consequences are fully exploited in the case of spherical symmetry relating them next to the the case in which the material content of the spacetime is some elastic material. This paper extends and generalizes the pioneering work by Magli and Kijowski [1], Magli [2] and [3], and complements, in a sense, that by Karlovini and Samuelsson in their interesting series of papers [4], [5] and [6].

We investigate the time-dependent, coherent, and dissipative dynamics of bound particles in single multilevel quantum dots in the presence of sequential tunnelling transport. We focus on the nonequilibrium regime where several channels are available for transport. Through a fully microscopic and non-Markovian density matrix formalism we investigate transport-induced decoherence and relaxation of the system. We validate our methodology by also investigating the Markov limit on our model. We confirm that not only does this limit neglect the coherent oscillations between system states as expected, but also the rate at which the steady state is reached under this limit significantly differs from the non-Markovian results. By a systematic analysis of the decay constants and frequencies of coherent oscillations for the off-diagonal elements of the reduced density matrix under various realistic tunneling rate anisotropies and energy configurations, we outline a criteria for extended decoherence times.

We have investigated the dynamics of bound particles in multilevel current-carrying quantum dots. We look specifically in the regime of resonant tunnelling transport, where several channels are available for transport. Through a non-Markovian formalism under the Born approximation, we investigate the real-time evolution of the confined particles including transport-induced decoherence and relaxation. In the case of a coherent superposition between states with different particle number, we find that a Fock-space coherence may be preserved even in the presence of tunneling into and out of the dot. Real-time results are presented for various asymmetries of tunneling rates into different orbitals.

Analysing the elasticity difference tensor of general relativity
Authors:

Abstract:
The elasticity difference tensor, used in [1] to describe elasticity properties of a continuous medium filling a space-time, is here analysed from the point of view of the space-time connection. Principal directions associated with this tensor are compared with eigendirections of the material metric. Examples concerning spherically symmetric and axially symmetric space-times are then presented.

We investigate sequential tunneling through a multilevel quantum dot confining multiple electrons, in the regime where several channels are available for transport within the bias window. By analyzing solutions to the master equations of the reduced density matrix, we give general conditions on when the presence of a second transport channel in the bias window quenches transport through the quantum dot. These conditions are in terms of distinct tunneling anisotropies which may aid in explaining the occurrence of negative differential conductance in quantum dots in the nonlinear regime.

The presciption uses a double null formalism, and is based on field redefinitions first used to simplify the field equations in generic two-dimensional dilaton gravity. The formalism is used to construct code in which d and Lambda are input parameters. The code reproduces known results in d = 4 and d = 6 with Lambda = 0. We present new results for d = 5 with zero and negative Lambda.

We use a combination of perturbation theory and numerical techniques to study the equilibration of two interacting fields which are initially at thermal equilibrium at different temperatures. Using standard rules of quantum field theory, we examine the master equations that describe the time evolution of the distribution functions for the two coupled systems. By making a few reasonable assumptions we reduce the resulting coupled integral/differential equations to a pair of differential equations that can be solved numerically. Our results show with good accuracy how these coupled systems approach a common equilibrium temperature.
