Although magnetism is a quantum phenomenon, its energy scale can be strong enough to sustain technological usage at room temperature and above. Temperature, however, leads to the decoherence which hampers quantum information applications. Common wisdom dictates that when magnets are heated to temperatures where thermal energy is higher than the interactions among atomic magnetic moments, the latter become uncorrelated and classical paramagnetic behavior is recovered. Surprisingly, our neutron scattering experiments on Yb chains in an insulating perovskite crystal overturn this conventional picture. We find a sharply defined spectrum of spinon excitations, which are the fractional elementary excitations in spin-1/2 chains, that persists to temperatures where thermal energy is more than 20 times higher than the energy of interactions between Yb magnetic moments, $J$. The observed sharpness of the spinon continuum boundary indicates that spinon mean free path exceeds $\approx 35$ inter-atomic spacings at temperatures markedly above the magnetic energy scale. Our observations reveal an interesting and highly unusual quantum behavior in a rare earth magnet, which challenges quantum metrology and has profound implications for spin qubit systems in quantum information applications operating at finite temperatures.

An effect of alloying of the monoclinic beta- Ga2O3 with Al2O3 and In2O3 on the photoluminescent, thermoluminescent and persistent luminescent properties of Cr3+ ions has been comprehensively investigated. For this purpose, various series of Cr3+ and Ca2+ co-doped microcrystalline phosphors were synthesized by the solution combustion method, including pseudobinary compounds like (Ga-Al)2O3 with up to 20% Al and (Ga-In)2O3 with up to 50% In as well as pseudoternary compounds (Ga Al In)2O3 with balanced proportion of Al, Ga and In. The phase composition and crystal structure of the obtained materials were examined by X-ray powder diffraction technique. Detailed luminescence studies were conducted for the (Ga-Al)2O3 and (Ga-In)2O3 compounds which exhibited a single-phase monoclinic structure. Low-temperature and time-resolved photoluminescence investigations of the Cr-doped pseudobinary compounds unveiled several types of Cr3+ centres, attributed to the Al-, Ga- and In-centred octahedra in the studied alloys. The obtained results underscore the benefit of bandgap engineering through alteration in the host lattice chemical composition for efficient tuning of the thermoluminescent and persistent luminescent properties of the near-infrared-emitting beta Ga2O3:Cr based phosphors. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that modification of the chemical composition of the host lattice also adjusts the thermometric performance of the studied phosphors. Indeed, the specific sensitivity of the beta- Ga2O3:Cr3+ decay time luminescence thermometer showed nearly twofold enhancement when the host lattice was alloyed with 30% of In2O3.

In this paper we report low-temperature magnetic properties of the rare-earth perovskite material YbAlO$_3$. Results of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiment, magnetization measurements along with the crystalline electrical field (CEF) calculations suggest that the ground state of Yb moments is a strongly anisotropic Kramers doublet, and the moments are confined in the $ab$-plane, pointing at an angle of $\varphi = \pm 23.5^{\circ}$ to the $a$-axis. With temperature decreasing below $T_{\rm N}=0.88$ K, Yb moments order into the coplanar, but non-collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure $AxGy$, where the moments are pointed along their easy-axes. In addition, we highlight the importance of the dipole-dipole interaction, which selects the type of magnetic ordering and may be crucial for understanding magnetic properties of other rare-earth orthorhombic perovskites. Further analysis of the broad diffuse neutron scattering shows that one-dimensional interaction along the $c$-axis is dominant, and suggests YbAlO$_3$ as a new member of one dimensional quantum magnets.

Low dimensional quantum magnets are interesting because of the emerging collective behavior arising from strong quantum fluctuations. The one-dimensional (1D) S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet is a paradigmatic example, whose low-energy excitations, known as spinons, carry fractional spin S = 1/2. These fractional modes can be reconfined by the application of a staggered magnetic field. Even though considerable progress has been made in the theoretical understanding of such magnets, experimental realizations of this low-dimensional physics are relatively rare. This is particularly true for rare-earth based magnets because of the large effective spin anisotropy induced by the combination of strong spin-orbit coupling and crystal field splitting. Here, we demonstrate that the rare-earth perovskite YbAlO$_3$ provides a realization of a quantum spin S = 1/2 chain material exhibiting both quantum critical Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior and spinon confinement-deconfinement transitions in different regions of magnetic field-temperature phase diagram.

We have investigated the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ of rare-earth cobaltites RCoO$_3$ (R= La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu) in the temperature range $4.2-300$ K and also the influence of hydrostatic pressure up to 2 kbar on their susceptibility at fixed temperatures $T=78 $ and 300 K. The specific dependence $χ(T)$ observed in LaCoO$_3$ and the anomalously large pressure effect (d ln $χ$/d$P\sim -100$ Mbar$^{-1}$ for $T = 78$ K) are analyzed in the framework of a two-level model with energy levels difference $Δ$. The ground state of the system is assumed to be nonmagnetic with the zero spin of Co$^{3+}$ ions, and magnetism at a finite temperature is determined by the excited magnetic spin state. The results of the analysis, supplemented by theoretical calculations of the electronic structure of LaCoO$_3$, indicate a significant increase in $Δ$ with a decrease in the unit cell volume under the hydrostatic pressure. In the series of RCoO$_3$ (R= Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu) compounds, the volume of crystal cell decreases monotonically due to a decrease in the radius of R$^{3+}$ ions. This leads to an increase in the relative energy $Δ$ of the excited state (the chemical pressure effect), which manifests itself in a decrease in the contribution of cobalt ions to the magnetic susceptibility at a fixed temperature, and also in a decrease in the hydrostatic pressure effect on the susceptibility of RCoO$_3$ compounds, which we have observed at $T=300$ K.

In the XRD measurements for SMO the new anomalies of the lattice parameters at 600-800 K range and the increasing of thermal expansion coefficients with a clear maximum in a vicinity at 670 K were detected. The N$\acute{e}$el phase transition for BSMO was observed at $T_N$=250 K in magnetic measurements and its trace was detected in dielectric, FTIR, DSC, and DMA experiments. The enthalpy and entropy changes of the phase transition for BSMO at $T_N$ were determined as 17.5 J/mol and 70 mJ/K mol, respectively. The activation energy values and relaxation times characteristic for relaxation processes were determined from the Arrhenius law. Results of ab initio simulations showed that the contribution of the exchange correlation energy to the total energy is about 30%.

SmFeO3 has attracted considerable attention very recently due to the reported multiferroic properties above room-temperature. We have performed powder and single crystal neutron diffraction as well as complementary polarization dependent soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on floating-zone grown SmFeO3 single crystals in order to determine its magnetic structure. We found a k=0 G-type collinear antiferromagnetic structure that is not compatible with inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction driven ferroelectricity. While the structural data reveals a clear sign for magneto-elastic coupling at the Néel-temperature of ~675 K, the dielectric measurements remain silent as far as ferroelectricity is concerned.
