The lighting requirements are subjective and one light setting cannot work for all. However, there is little work on develo** smart lighting algorithms that can adapt to user preferences. To address this gap, this paper uses fuzzy logic and reinforcement learning to develop an adaptive lighting algorithm. In particular, we develop a baseline fuzzy inference system (FIS) using the domain knowledge. We use the existing literature to create a FIS that generates lighting setting recommendations based on environmental conditions i.e. daily glare index, and user information including age, activity, and chronotype. Through a feedback mechanism, the user interacts with the algorithm, correcting the algorithm output to their preferences. We interpret these corrections as rewards to a Q-learning agent, which tunes the FIS parameters online to match the user preferences. We implement the algorithm in an aircraft cabin mockup and conduct an extensive user study to evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm and understand its learning behavior. Our implementation results demonstrate that the developed algorithm possesses the capability to learn user preferences while successfully adapting to a wide range of environmental conditions and user characteristics. and can deal with a diverse spectrum of environmental conditions and user characteristics. This underscores its viability as a potent solution for intelligent light management, featuring advanced learning capabilities.

Diet is central to the epidemic of lifestyle disorders. Accurate and effortless diet logging is one of the significant bottlenecks for effective diet management and calorie restriction. Dish detection from food platters is a challenging problem due to a visually complex food layout. We present an end-to-end computational framework for diet management, from data compilation, annotation, and state-of-the-art model identification to its mobile app implementation. As a case study, we implement the framework in the context of Indian food platters known for their complex presentation that poses a challenge for the automated detection of dishes. Starting with the 61 most popular Indian dishes, we identify the state-of-the-art model through a comparative analysis of deep-learning-based object detection architectures. Rooted in a meticulous compilation of 68,005 platter images with 134,814 manual dish annotations, we first compare ten architectures for multi-label classification to identify ResNet152 (mAP=84.51%) as the best model. YOLOv8x (mAP=87.70%) emerged as the best model architecture for dish detection among the eight deep-learning models implemented after a thorough performance evaluation. By comparing with the state-of-the-art model for the IndianFood10 dataset, we demonstrate the superior object detection performance of YOLOv8x for this subset and establish Resnet152 as the best architecture for multi-label classification. The models thus trained on richly annotated data can be extended to include dishes from across global cuisines. The proposed framework is demonstrated through a proof-of-concept mobile application with diverse applications for diet logging, food recommendation systems, nutritional interventions, and mitigation of lifestyle disorders.

Fashion retailers require accurate demand forecasts for the next season, almost a year in advance, for demand management and supply chain planning purposes. Accurate forecasts are important to ensure retailers' profitability and to reduce environmental damage caused by disposal of unsold inventory. It is challenging because most products are new in a season and have short life cycles, huge sales variations and long lead-times. In this paper, we present a novel product age based forecast model, where product age refers to the number of weeks since its launch, and show that it outperforms existing models. We demonstrate the robust performance of the approach through real world use case of a multinational fashion retailer having over 300 stores, 35k items and around 40 categories. The main contributions of this work include unique and significant feature engineering for product attribute values, accurate demand forecast 6-12 months in advance and extending our approach to recommend product launch time for the next season. We use our fashion assortment optimization model to produce list and quantity of items to be listed in a store for the next season that maximizes total revenue and satisfies business constraints. We found a revenue uplift of 41% from our framework in comparison to the retailer's plan. We also compare our forecast results with the current methods and show that it outperforms existing models. Our framework leads to better ordering, inventory planning, assortment planning and overall increase in profit for the retailer's supply chain.
