The Quantum Fourier Transform (QFT) grants competitive advantages, especially in resource usage and circuit approximation, for performing arithmetic operations on quantum computers, and offers a potential route towards a numerical quantum-computational paradigm. In this paper, we utilize efficient techniques to implement QFT-based integer addition and multiplications. These operations are fundamental to various quantum applications including Shor's algorithm, weighted sum optimization problems in data processing and machine learning, and quantum algorithms requiring inner products. We carry out performance evaluations of these implementations based on IBM's superconducting qubit architecture using different compatible noise models. We isolate the sensitivity of the component quantum circuits on both one-/two-qubit gate error rates, and the number of the arithmetic operands' superposed integer states. We analyze performance, and identify the most effective approximation depths for quantum add and quantum multiply within the given context. We observe significant dependency of the optimal approximation depth on the degree of machine noise and the number of superposed states in certain performance regimes. Finally, we elaborate on the algorithmic challenges - relevant to signed, unsigned, modular and non-modular versions - that could also be applied to current implementations of QFT-based subtraction, division, exponentiation, and their potential tensor extensions. We analyze performance trends in our results and speculate on possible future development within this computational paradigm.

Ab initio no-core configuration interaction (NCCI) calculations for the nuclear many-body problem have traditionally relied upon an antisymmetrized product (Slater determinant) basis built from harmonic oscillator orbitals. The accuracy of such calculations is limited by the finite dimensions which are computationally feasible for the truncated many-body space. We therefore seek to improve the accuracy obtained for a given basis size by optimizing the choice of single-particle orbitals. Natural orbitals, which diagonalize the one-body density matrix, provide a basis which maximizes the occupation of low-lying orbitals, thus accelerating convergence in a configuration-interaction basis, while also possibly providing physical insight into the single-particle structure of the many-body wave function. We describe the implementation of natural orbitals in the NCCI framework, and examine the nature of the natural orbitals thus obtained, the properties of the resulting many-body wave functions, and the convergence of observables. After taking $^3\mathrm{He}$ as an illustrative testbed, we explore aspects of NCCI calculations with natural orbitals for the ground state of the $p$-shell neutron halo nucleus $^6\mathrm{He}$.

Quantum computing has demonstrated the potential to revolutionize our understanding of nuclear, atomic, and molecular structure by obtaining forefront solutions in non-relativistic quantum many-body theory. In this work, we show that quantum computing can be used to solve for the structure of hadrons, governed by strongly-interacting relativistic quantum field theory. Following our previous work on light unflavored mesons as a relativistic bound-state problem within the nonperturbative Hamiltonian formalism, we present the numerical calculations on simulated quantum devices using the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) approach. We implement and compare the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and the subspace-search variational quantum eigensolver (SSVQE) to find the low-lying mass spectrum of the light meson system and its corresponding light-front wave functions as quantum states from ideal simulators, noisy simulators, and IBM quantum computers. Based on obtained quantum states, we evaluate the meson decay constants and parton distribution functions directly on the quantum circuits. Our calculations on the quantum computers and simulators are in reasonable agreement with accurate numerical solutions solved on classical computers when noises are moderately small, and our overall results are comparable with the available experimental data.

We compute the two-photon transition form factors as well as the two-photon decay widths for S- and P-wave charmonia, $η_c$ and $χ_{cJ}$ and their excitations. We develop a mechanism to build the light-front wavefunctions (LFWFs) of meson bound states on a small-sized basis function representation. Unlike in a standard Hamiltonian formalism, the Hamiltonian in this method is implicit, and the information of the system is carried directly by the functional form and adjustable parameters of the LFWFs. In this work, we model the LFWFs for four charmonium states, $η_c$, $J/ψ$, $ψ'$, and $ψ(3770)$ as superpositions of orthonormal basis functions. We choose the basis functions as eigenfunctions of an effective Hamiltonian, which has a longitudinal confining potential in addition to the transverse confining potential from light-front holographic QCD. We determine the basis function parameters and superposition coefficients by employing both guidance from the nonrelativistic description of the meson states and the experimental measurements of the meson decay widths. With the obtained wavefunctions, we study the features of those meson states, including charge radii and parton distribution functions. We use the $J/ψ$ LFWF to calculate the meson production in diffractive deep inelastic scattering and ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions, and the $η_c$ LFWF to calculate its diphoton transition form factor. Both results show good agreement with experiments. The obtained LFWFs have simple-functional forms and can be readily used to predict additional experimental observables.

We present the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the valence quarks of the pion and the kaon in both momentum space and position space within the basis light-front quantization framework. These GPDs are obtained from the eigenvectors of a light-front effective Hamiltonian consisting of the holographic quantum chromodynamics (QCD) confinement potential, a complementary longitudinal confinement potential, and the color-singlet Nambu-Jona--Lasinio interactions for the valence quarks of mesons. We then calculate the generalized form factors of the pion and the kaon from the moments of these GPDs. Combining the tensor form factors with the electromagnetic form factors, we subsequently evaluate the impact parameter dependent probability density of transversely polarized quarks inside the pion and the kaon. The numerical results for the generalized form factors, tensor charges, as well as those for the probability densities and the transverse shift of the polarized densities are consistent with lattice QCD simulations and with chiral quark models.

We obtain the distribution amplitude (DA) of the pion from its light-front wave functions in the basis light-front quantization framework. This light-front wave function of the pion is given by the lowest eigenvector of a light-front effective Hamiltonian consisting a three-dimensional confinement potential and the color-singlet Nambu--Jona-Lasinion interaction both between the constituent quark and antiquark. The quantum chromodynamics (QCD) evolution of the DA is subsequently given by the perturbative Efremov-Radyushkin-Brodsky-Lepage evolution equation. Based on this DA, we then evaluate the singly and doubly virtual transition form factors in the space-like region for $π^0\rightarrow γ^*γ$ and $π^0\rightarrow γ^*γ^*$ processes using the hard-scattering formalism. Our prediction for the pion-photon transition form factor agrees well with data reported by the Belle Collaboration. However, in the large $Q^2$ region it deviates from the rapid growth reported by the BaBar Collaboration. Meanwhile, our result on the $π^0\rightarrow γ^*γ^*$ transition form factor is also consistent with other theoretical approaches and agrees with the scaling behavior predicted by perturbative QCD.

We produce the light-front wave functions (LFWFs) of the nucleon from a basis light-front ap- proach in the leading Fock sector representation. We solve for the mass eigenstates from a light-front effective Hamiltonian, which includes a confining potential adopted from light-front holography in the transverse direction, a longitudinal confinement, and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling. We then employ the LFWFs to obtain the electromagnetic and axial form factors, the par- ton distribution functions (PDFs) and the generalized parton distribution functions for the nucleon. The electromagnetic and axial form factors of the proton agree with the experimental data, whereas the neutron form factors deviate somewhat from the experiments in the low momentum transfer region. The unpolarized, the helicity, and the transversity valence quark PDFs, after QCD scale evolution, are fairly consistent with the global fits to the data at the relevant experimental scales. The helicity asymmetry for the down quark also agrees well with the measurements, however, the asymmetry for the up quark shows a deviation from the data, especially in the small x region. We also find that the tensor charge agrees well with the extracted data and the lattice QCD predictions, while the axial charge is somewhat outside the experimental error bar. The electromagnetic radii of the proton, the magnetic radius of the neutron, and the axial radius are in excellent agreement with the measurements, while the neutron charge radius deviates from experiment.

We report $J^π= 0^+$ ground-state energies and point-proton radii of $^4$He, $^8$Be, $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O and $^{20}$Ne nuclei calculated by the $ab$ $initio$ no-core Monte Carlo shell model with the JISP16 and Daejeon16 nonlocal $NN$ interactions. Ground-state energies are obtained in the basis spaces up to seven oscillator shells ($N_{\rm shell} = 7$) with several oscillator energies ($\hbar ω$) around the optimal oscillator energy for the convergence of ground-state energies. These energy eigenvalues are extrapolated to obtain estimates of converged ground state energies in each basis space using energy variances of computed energy eigenvalues. We further extrapolate these energy-variance-extrapolated energies obtained in the finite basis spaces to infinite basis-space results with an empirical exponential form. This form features a dependence on the basis-space size but is independent of the value of $\hbarω$ used for the harmonic-oscillator basis functions. Point-proton radii for these states of atomic nuclei are also calculated following techniques employed for the energies. From these results, it is found that the Daejeon16 $NN$ interaction provides good agreement with experimental data up to approximately $^{16}$O, while the JISP16 $NN$ interaction provides good agreement with experimental data up to approximately $^{12}$C. Beyond these nuclei, the interactions produce overbinding accompanied by radii that are too small. These findings suggest and encourage further revisions of nonlocal $NN$ interactions towards the investigation of nuclear structure in heavier-mass regions.

Background: Solving nuclear many-body problems with an ab initio approach is widely recognized as a computationally challenging problem. Quantum computers offer a promising path to address this challenge. There are urgent needs to develop quantum algorithms for this purpose.
Objective: In this work, we explore the application of the quantum algorithm of adiabatic state preparation with quantum phase estimation in ab initio nuclear structure theory. We focus on solving the low-lying spectra (including both the ground and excited states) of simple nuclear systems.
Ideas: The efficiency of this algorithm is hindered by the emergence of small energy gaps (level crossings) during the adiabatic evolution. In order to improve the efficiency, we introduce techniques to avoid level crossings: 1) by suitable design of the reference Hamiltonian; 2) by insertions of perturbation terms to modify the adiabatic path.
Results: We illustrate this algorithm by solving the deuteron ground state energy and the spectrum of the deuteron bounded in a harmonic oscillator trap implementing the IBM Qiskit quantum simulator. The quantum results agree well the classical results obtained by matrix diagonalization.
Outlook: With our improvements to the efficiency, this algorithm provides a promising tool for investigating the low-lying spectra of complex nuclei on future quantum computers.

We present a systematic investigation of few-nucleon systems and light nuclei using the current LENPIC interactions comprising semilocal momentum-space regularized two- and three-nucleon forces up to third chiral order (N$^2$LO). Following our earlier study utilizing the coordinate-space regularized interactions, the two low-energy constants entering the three-body force are determined from the triton binding energy and the differential cross section minimum in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering. Predictions are made for selected observables in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering and in the deuteron breakup reactions, for properties of the $A=3$ and $A=4$ nuclei, and for spectra of $p$-shell nuclei up to $A = 16$. A comprehensive error analysis is performed including an estimation of correlated truncation uncertainties for nuclear spectra. The obtained predictions are generally found to agree with experimental data within errors. Similar to the coordinate-space regularized chiral interactions at the same order, a systematic overbinding of heavier nuclei is observed, which sets in for $A \sim 10$ and increases with $A$.

The Daejeon16 two-nucleon interaction is employed in many-body approaches based on the mean-field approximation. The perturbative character of Daejeon16 is verified by comparing results for 16O from the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation and from the no-core shell model and by examining the magnitude of perturbative corrections to the HF energy in light and heavy nuclei. In order to approximately describe energies and radii across the nuclear chart, a phenomenological correction in the form of a two-plus-three-nucleon contact interaction is introduced. With fitted parameters we achieve a very good description of medium-mass nuclei in terms of energy and size and also in terms of the centroid energy of the giant monopole resonance and the dipole polarizability calculated within the random-phase approximation (RPA). Our results provide further justification for the use of Daejeon16 augmented with phenomenological corrections as an effective interaction of perturbative character in a variety of applications.

We present a quantum algorithm for simulation of quantum field theory in the light-front formulation and demonstrate how existing quantum devices can be used to study the structure of bound states in relativistic nuclear physics. Specifically, we apply the Variational Quantum Eigensolver algorithm to find the ground state of the light-front Hamiltonian obtained within the Basis Light-Front Quantization framework. As a demonstration, we calculate the mass, mass radius, decay constant, electromagnetic form factor, and charge radius of the pion on the IBMQ Vigo chip. We consider two implementations based on different encodings of physical states, and propose a development that may lead to quantum advantage. This is the first time that the light-front approach to quantum field theory has been used to enable simulation of a real physical system on a quantum computer.

We present a time-dependent quantum algorithm for nuclear inelastic scattering in the time-dependent basis function on qubits approach. This algorithm aims to quantum simulate a subset of the nuclear inelastic scattering problems that are of physical interest, in which the internal degrees of freedom of the reaction system are excited by time-dependent external interactions. We expect that our algorithm will enable an exponential speedup in simulating the dynamics of the subset of the inelastic scattering problems, which would also be advantageous for the applications to more complicated scattering problems. For a demonstration problem, we solve for the Coulomb excitation of the deuteron, where the quantum simulations are performed with IBM Qiskit.

We study the light-unflavored mesons as relativistic bound states in the nonperturbative Hamiltonian formalism of the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) approach. The dynamics for the valence quarks of these mesons is specified by an effective Hamiltonian containing the one-gluon exchange interaction and the confining potentials both introduced in our previous work on heavy quarkonia, supplemented additionally by a pseudoscalar contact interaction. We diagonalize this Hamiltonian in our basis function representation to obtain the mass spectrum and the light-front wave functions (LFWFs). Based on these LFWFs, we then study the structure of these mesons by computing the electromagnetic form factors, the decay constants, the parton distribution amplitudes (PDAs), and the parton distribution functions (PDFs). Our results are comparable to those from experiments and other theoretical models.

We investigate the scattering of a quark on a heavy nucleus at high energies using the time-dependent basis light-front quantization (tBLFQ) formalism, which is the first application of the tBLFQ formalism in QCD. We present the real-time evolution of the quark wave function in a strong classical color field of the relativistic nucleus, described as the Color Glass Condensate. The quark and the nucleus color field are simulated in the QCD SU(3) color space. We calculate the total and the differential cross sections, and the quark distribution in coordinate and color spaces using the tBLFQ approach. We recover the eikonal cross sections in the eikonal limit. We find that the differential cross section from the tBLFQ simulation is in agreement with a perturbative calculation at large $p_\perp$, and it deviates from the perturbative calculation at small $p_\perp$ due to higher-order contributions. In particular, we relax the eikonal limit by letting the quark carry realistic finite longitudinal momenta. We study the sub-eikonal effect on the quark through the transverse coordinate distribution of the quark with different longitudinal momentum, and we find the sub-eikonal effect to be sizable. Our results can significantly reduce the theoretical uncertainties in small $p_\perp$ region which has important implications to the phenomenology of the hadron-nucleus and deep inelastic scattering at high energies.

We discuss recent results for quarkonia obtained in basis light-front quantization using an effective Hamiltonian with a confining model in both the transverse and longitudinal directions and with explicit one-gluon exchange. In particular, we focus on the numerical convergence of the basis expansion, as well as the asymptotic behavior of the light-front wave functions. We also illustrate that, for mesons with unequal quark masses, the maxima of the light-front wave functions depend in a non-trivial way on the valence quark-mass difference.

We investigate the use of the sinc collocation and harmonic oscillator bases for solving a two-particle system bound by a Gaussian potential described by the radial Schrödinger equation. We analyze the properties of the bound state wave functions by investigating where the basis-state wave functions break down and relate the breakdowns to the infrared and ultraviolet scales for both bases. We propose a correction for the asymptotic infrared region, the long range tails of the wave functions. We compare the calculated bound state eigenvalues and mean square radii obtained within the two bases. From the trends in the numerical results, we identify the advantages and disadvantages of the two bases. We find that the sinc basis performs better in our implementation for accurately computing both the deeply- and weakly-bound states whereas the harmonic oscillator basis is more convenient since the basis-state wave functions are orthogonal and maintain the same mathematical structure in both position and momentum space. These mathematical properties of the harmonic oscillator basis are especially advantageous in problems where one employs both position and momentum space. The main disadvantage of the harmonic oscillator basis as illustrated in this work is the large basis space size required to obtain accurate results simultaneously for deeply- and weakly-bound states. The main disadvantage of the sinc basis could be the numerical challenges for its implementation in a many-body application.

In the light-front formalism, we calculate the light-front wave functions and additional experimental observables, such as parton distribution functions, distribution amplitudes, and decay constants by means of integrations over light-front wave functions. We also provide ratios of decay constants for selected pseudoscalar meson decays ($D_s$ to $D$ and $B_s$ to $B$) as they may prove to be theoretically more robust and more reliably determined in experiments. We find that our ratios are systematically smaller than existing experiment and other approaches by $5-18\%$.

This white paper reports on the discussions of the 2018 Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Theory Alliance (FRIB-TA) topical program "From bound states to the continuum: Connecting bound state calculations with scattering and reaction theory". One of the biggest and most important frontiers in nuclear theory today is to construct better and stronger bridges between bound state calculations and calculations in the continuum, especially scattering and reaction theory, as well as teasing out the influence of the continuum on states near threshold. This is particularly challenging as many-body structure calculations typically use a bound state basis, while reaction calculations more commonly utilize few-body continuum approaches. The many-body bound state and few-body continuum methods use different language and emphasize different properties. To build better foundations for these bridges, we present an overview of several bound state and continuum methods and, where possible, point to current and possible future connections.

Structural phenomena in nuclei, from shell structure and clustering to superfluidity and collective rotations and vibrations, reflect emergent degrees of freedom. Ab initio theory describes nuclei directly from a fully microscopic formulation. We can therefore look to ab initio theory as a means of exploring the emergence of effective degrees of freedom in nuclei. For the illustrative case of emergent rotational bands in the Be isotopes, we establish an understanding of the underlying oscillator space and angular momentum (orbital and spin) structure. We consider no-core configuration interaction (NCCI) calculations for 7,9,11Be with the Daejeon16 internucleon interaction. Although shell model or rotational degrees of freedom are not assumed in the ab initio theory, the NCCI results are suggestive of the emergence of effective shell model degrees of freedom (0 hbar-omega and 2 hbar-omega excitations) and LS-scheme rotational degrees of freedom, consistent with an Elliott-Wilsdon SU(3) description. These results provide some basic insight into the connection between emergent effective collective rotational and shell model degrees of freedom in these light nuclei and the underlying ab initio microscopic description.

We employ the non-perturbative time-dependent basis function (tBF) approach to study the scattering of the deuteron on $^{208}$Pb below the Coulomb barrier. We obtain the bound and discretized scattering states of the projectile, which form the basis representation of the tBF approach, by diagonalizing a realistic Hamiltonian in a large harmonic oscillator basis. We find that the higher-order inelastic scattering effects are noticeable for sub barrier scatterings with the tBF method. We have successfully reproduced experimental sub Coulomb barrier elastic cross section ratios with the tBF approach by considering only the electric dipole ($\mathit{E1}$) component of the Coulomb interaction between the projectile and the target during scatterings. We find that the correction of the polarization potential to the Rutherford trajectory is dominant in reproducing the data at very low bombarding energies, whereas the role of internal transitions of the deuteron projectile induced by the $\mathit{E1}$ interaction during the scattering becomes increasingly significant at higher bombarding energies.

One of the interesting results is that the ab initio NCSM with Daejeon16 clearly demonstrates the phenomenon of parity inversion in Be-11, i.e., the ground state in Be-11 has the spin-parity (1/2, +) in experiments contrary to the expectation from the conventional shell model

No-core configuration interaction (NCCI) calculations for p-shell nuclei give rise to rotational bands, identified by strong intraband E2 transitions and by rotational patterns for excitation energies, electromagnetic moments, and electromagnetic transitions. However, convergence rates differ significantly for different rotational observables and for different rotational bands. The choice of internucleon interaction may also substantially impact the convergence rates. Consequently, there is a substantial gap between simply observing the qualitative emergence of rotation in ab initio calculations and actually carrying out detailed quantitative comparisons. In this contribution, we illustrate the convergence properties of rotational band energy parameters extracted from NCCI calculations, and compare these predictions with experiment, for the isotopes 7-11Be, and for the JISP16 and Daejeon16 interactions.

Abstract:
We compute nuclear matrix elements of neutrinoless double-beta decay mediated by light Majorana-neutrino exchange in the A = 6 system. The goal is to benchmark two many-body approaches, the No-Core Shell Model and the Multi-Reference In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group. We use the SRG-evolved chiral N3LO-EM500 potential for the nuclear interaction, and make the approximation that isospin is…

We use the SRG-evolved chiral N3LO-EM500 potential for the nuclear interaction, and make the approximation that isospin is conserved. We compare the results of the two approaches as a function of the cutoff on the many-body basis space. Although differences are seen in the predicted nuclear radii, the ground-state energies and neutrinoless double-beta decay matrix elements produced by the two approaches show significant agreement. We discuss the implications for calculations in heavier nuclei.

We perform a quantitative study of the microscopic effective shell-model interactions in the valence sd shell, obtained from modern nucleon-nucleon potentials, chiral N3LO, JISP16 and Daejeon16, using No-Core Shell-Model wave functions and the Okubo-Lee-Suzuki transformation. We investigate the monopole properties of those interactions in comparison with the phenomenological universal sd-shell interaction, USDB. Theoretical binding energies and low-energy spectra of O isotopes and of selected sd-shell nuclei, are presented. We conclude that there is a noticeable improvement in the quality of the effective interaction when it is derived from the Daejeon16 potential. We show that its proton-neutron centroids are consistent with those from USDB. We then propose monopole modifications of the Daejeon16 centroids in order to provide an adjusted interaction yielding significantly improved agreement with the experiment. A spin-tensor decomposition of two-body effective interactions is applied in order to extract more information on the structure of the centroids and to understand the reason for deficiencies arising from our current theoretical approximations. The issue of the possible role of the three-nucleon forces is addressed.

We present the first application of the Basis Light-Front Quantization method to study a simple chiral model of the nucleon-pion system via an ab initio, non-perturbative, Hamiltonian approach. As a test problem, we consider the physical proton as the relativistic bound state of the nucleon-pion system. Based on the chiral model of the nucleon-pion system, we construct the mass-squared matrix of the system within our light-front basis representation. We obtain the proton's mass and the corresponding light-front wave function by solving the eigenvalue problem of the mass-squared matrix. With the resulting boost-invariant light-front wave function, we also compute the proton's parton distribution function.
