The computation of $ζ(2k)$, $β(2k+1)$ and beyond by using telesco** series
Abstract: We present some simple proofs of the well-known expressions for \[ ζ(2k) = \sum_{m=1}^\infty \frac{1}{m^{2k}}, \qquad β(2k+1) = \sum_{m=0}^\infty \frac{(-1)^m}{(2m+1)^{2k+1}}, \] where $k = 1,2,3,\dots$, in terms of the Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. The computation is done using only the defining properties of these polynomials and employing telesco** series. The same method also yields… ▽ More

Three essays on Machin's type formulas
Abstract: We study three questions related to Machin's type formulas. The first one gives all two terms Machin formulas where both arctangent functions are evaluated $2$-integers, that is values of the form $b/2^a$ for some integers $a$ and~$b$. These formulas are computationally useful because multiplication or division by a power of two is a very fast operation for most computers. The second one presents… ▽ More

On the Solution of the Equation $n = ak + bp_k$ by Means of an Iterative Method
Abstract: For fixed positive integers $n$, we study the solution of the equation $n = k + p_k$, where $p_k$ denotes the $k$th prime number, by means of the iterative method \[ k_{j+1} = π(n-k_j), \qquad k_0 = π(n), \] which converges to the solution of the equation, if it exists. We also analyze the equation $n = ak + bp_k$ for fixed integer values $a \ne 0$ and $b>0$, and its solution by means of a corresp… ▽ More

A Couple of Transcendental Prime-Representing Constants
Abstract: It is well known that the arithmetic nature of Mills' prime-representing constant is uncertain: we do not know if Mills' constant is a rational or irrational number. In the case of other prime-representing constants, irrationality can be proved, but it is not known whether these constants are algebraic or transcendental numbers. Continued fractions for strong Engel series and Lüroth series with signs
Abstract: An Engel series is a sum of reciprocals $\sum_{j\geq 1} 1/x_j$ of a non-decreasing sequence of positive integers $x_n$ with the property that $x_n$ divides $x_{n+1}$ for all $n\geq 1$. In previous work, we have shown that for any Engel series with the stronger property that $x_n^2$ divides $x_{n+1}$, the continued fraction expansion of the sum is determined explicitly in terms of $z_1=x_1$ and the… ▽ More

Abstract: An Engel series is a sum of reciprocals of a non-decreasing sequence $(x_n)$ of positive integers, which is such that each term is divisible by the previous one, and a Pierce series is an alternating sum of the reciprocals of a sequence with the same property. Abstract: We introduce Bernoulli-Dunkl and Apostol-Euler-Dunkl polynomials as generalizations of Bernoulli and Apostol-Euler polynomials, where the role of the derivative is now played by the Dunkl operator on the real line. We use them to sum a bunch of series involving the zeros of Bessel functions.

As a by-product of our work on quasi-greedy bases in $L_{p}(μ)$, we show that no normalized unconditional basis in $L_p$, $p\not=2$, can be semi-normalized in $L_q$ for $q\not=p$, thus extending a classical theorem of Kadets and Pełczy{ń}ski… ▽ More

Misfortunes of a mathematicians' trio using Computer Algebra Systems: Can we trust?
Abstract: Computer algebra systems are a great help for mathematical research but sometimes unexpected errors in the software can also badly affect it. As an example, we show how we have detected an error of Mathematica computing determinants of matrices of integer numbers: not only it computes the determinants wrongly, but also it produces different results if one evaluates the same determinant twice.

Abstract: We present a new proof of Euler's formulas for $ζ(2k)$, where $k = 1,2,3,...$, which uses only the defining properties of the Bernoulli polynomials, obtaining the value of $ζ(2k)$ by summing a telesco** series. Only basic techniques from Calculus are needed to carry out the computation. The method also applies to $ζ(2k+1)$ and the harmonic numbers, yielding integral formulas for these.
