Given a manifold $\mathbb{M}$ admitting a maximally supersymmetric consistent truncation, we show how to formulate new consistent truncations by restricting to a set of Kaluza-Klein modes on $\mathbb{M}$ invariant under some subgroup of the group of isometries of $\mathbb{M}$. These truncations may involve either finite or infinite sets of modes. We provide their global description using exceptional generalised geometry to construct a `deformed' generalised parallelisation starting with that on $\mathbb{M}$. This allows us to explicitly embed known consistent truncations directly into exceptional generalised geometry/exceptional field theory, and to obtain the equations governing situations where the consistent truncation retains an infinite tower of modes.

We derive the explicit embedding of the effective Kerr spacetimes, which are pertinent to the vanishing of static Love numbers, soft hair descriptions of Kerr black holes, and low-frequency scalar-Kerr scattering amplitudes, as solutions within N = 2 supergravity. These spacetimes exhibit a hidden $SL(2, R) \times U (1)$ or $SO(4, 2)$ symmetry resembling the so called subtracted geometries with $SL(2, R) \times SL(2, R)$ symmetry, which accurately represent the near-horizon geometry of Kerr black holes and, as we will argue most accurately represents the internal structure of the Kerr black hole. To quantify the differences among the effective Kerr spacetimes, we compare their physical quantities, internal structures, and geodesic equations. Although their thermodynamic properties, including entropy, match those of Kerr, our study uncovers significant differences in the interiors of these effective Kerr solutions. A careful examination of the internal structure of the spacetimes highlights the distinctions between various effective Kerr geometries and their quasinormal spectra.

Ion acceleration from gaseous targets driven by relativistic-intensity lasers was demonstrated as early as the late 90s, yet most of the experiments conducted to date have involved picosecond-duration, Nd:glass lasers operating at low repetition rate. Here, we present measurements on the interaction of ultraintense ($\sim 10^{20}\,\rm W\,cm^{-2}$, 1 PW), ultrashort ($\sim 70\,\rm fs$) Ti:Sa laser pulses with near-critical ($\sim 10^{20}\,\rm cm^{-3}$) helium gas jets, a debris-free targetry compatible with high ($\sim 1\,\rm Hz$) repetition rate operation. We provide evidence of $α$ particles being forward accelerated up to $\sim 2.7\,\rm MeV$ energy with a total flux of $\sim 10^{11}\,\rm sr^{-1}$ as integrated over $>0.1 \,\rm MeV$ energies and detected within a $0.5\,\rm mrad$ solid angle. We also report on on-axis emission of relativistic electrons with an exponentially decaying spectrum characterized by a $\sim 10\,\rm MeV$ slope, i.e., five times larger than the standard ponderomotive scaling. The total charge of these electrons with energy above 2 MeV is estimated to be of $\sim 1 \,\rm nC$, corresponding to $\sim 0.1\,\%$ of the laser drive energy. In addition, we observe the formation of a plasma channel, extending longitudinally across the gas density maximum and expanding radially with time. These results are well captured by large-scale particle-in-cell simulations, which reveal that the detected fast ions most likely originate from reflection off the rapidly expanding channel walls. The latter process is predicted to yield ion energies in the MeV range, which compare well with the measurements. Finally, direct laser acceleration is shown to be the dominant mechanism behind the observed electron energization.

We analyse the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein excitations above three distinct families of ${\cal N}=1$ AdS$_4$ solutions of type IIB supergravity of typically non-geometric, S-fold type that have been recently found. For all three families, we provide the complete algebraic structure of their spectra, including the content of OSp$(4|1)$ multiplets at all Kaluza-Klein levels and their charges under the residual symmetry groups. We also provide extensive results for the multiplet dimensions using new methods derived from exceptional field theory, including complete, analytic results for one of the families. All three spectra show periodicity in the moduli that label the corresponding family of solutions. Finally, the compactness of these moduli is verified in some cases at the level of the fully-fledged type IIB uplifted solutions.

Using gauged supergravity, the ${\cal N} =2$ conformal manifold (CM) of this CFT has been assessed to be two-dimensional. Here, we holographically characterise the large-$N$ operator spectrum of the marginally-deformed CFT. We do this by, firstly, providing the algebraic structure of the complete Kaluza-Klein (KK) spectrum on the associated two-parameter family of AdS$_4$ solutions. And, secondly, by computing the ${\cal N} =2$ supermultiplet dimensions at the first few KK levels on a lattice in the CM, using new exceptional field theory techniques. Our KK analysis also allows us to establish that, at least at large $N$, this ${\cal N} =2$ CM is topologically a non-compact cylindrical Riemann surface bounded on only one side.

These solutions preserve SO(3) and $\textrm{U}(1) \times \textrm{U}(1)$ internal symmetry in $D=11$, and U(1) (two of them) and no continuous symmetry in type IIA. Together with previously discussed cases, our results exhaust the Kaluza-Klein spectra of known supersymmetric AdS$_4$ solutions in $D=11$ and type IIA in the relevant class.

This is holographically dual to a warped $\textrm{AdS}_4 \times_w S^7$ solution of M-theory equipped with a squashed and stretched metric on $S^7$. We determine the spectrum of spin-2 operators of the cubic deformation at low energies by computing the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravitons over the dual AdS$_4$ solution. We calculate, numerically, the complete graviton spectrum and, analytically, the spectrum of gravitons that belong to short multiplets. We also use group theory to assess the structure of the full KK spectrum, and conclude that ${\cal N}=2$ supermultiplets cannot be allocated KK level by KK level. This phenomenon, usually referred to as "space invaders scenario", is also known to occur for another $\textrm{AdS}_4$ solution based on a different squashed $S^7$.

For AdS$_4$ vacua in gauged supergravities that arise upon consistent truncation of string/M-theory, we show that this universality is lost at higher Kaluza-Klein levels. However, universality is still maintained in a milder form, as certain sums over a finite number of states remain universal. Further, we derive a mass matrix for Kaluza-Klein gravitons which is valid for all the AdS$_4$ vacua in string/M-theory that uplift from the gaugings of $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity that we consider. The mild universality of mass sums is related to the trace of this mass matrix.

We focus on a half-maximal sector including three vector multiplets, that arises as a certain $\,\textrm{SO}(3)_{\textrm{R}}$-invariant sector of the full theory. We discuss the embedding of this sector into the largest half-maximal sector of the $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity retaining six vector multiplets. We also provide its canonical $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ formulation and show that, from this perspective, our model leads in its own right to a new explicit gauging of $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ supergravity. Finally, expressions for the restricted duality hierarchy are given and the vacuum structure is investigated. Five new non-supersymmetric AdS vacua are found numerically. The previously known $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ AdS vacua are also contained in our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model. The SU(3)--invariant sector of maximal supergravity in four dimensions with an SO(8) gauging is uplifted to $D=11$ supergravity. In order to do this, the SU(3)--neutral sector of the tensor and duality hierarchies of the $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity is first worked out. The consistent $D=11$ embedding of the full, dynamical SU(3) sector is then expressed at the level of the $D=11$ metric and three-form gauge field in terms of these $D=4$ tensors. The redundancies introduced by this approach are eliminated at the level of the $D=11$ four-form field strength by making use of the $D=4$ duality hierarchy. Our results encompass previously known truncations of $D=11$ supergravity down to sectors of SO(8) supergravity with symmetry larger than SU(3), and include new ones. In particular, we obtain a new consistent truncation of $D=11$ supergravity to minimal $D=4$ ${\cal N}=2$ gauged supergravity.

We identify two classes of fluctuations which are universally present for all solutions of this form. The holographically dual operators have scaling dimensions $Δ=5+3\ell$ and $Δ=6+3\ell$, where the integer $\ell$ encodes the $R$-symmetry charge. They are identified as descendant states in respective BPS multiplets (the current multiplet for $Δ=5$). We also compute the normalization of the energy-momentum tensor two-point function and show that it is related to the $S^5$ partition function of the dual $5d$ SCFTs.

Firstly, a $D=4$, SO(4)--invariant restricted duality hierarchy is constructed and used to uplift the entire, dynamical SO(4)--invariant sector to massive type IIA. The resulting consistent uplift formulae are used to obtain a new local expression for the ${\cal N} = 3 $ AdS$_4$ solution in massive IIA and analyse its geometry. Locally, the internal $S^6$ geometry corresponds to a warped fibration of $S^2$ and a hemisphere of $S^4$. This can be regarded as a warped generalisation of the usual twistor fibration geometry. Finally, the triplet of Killing spinors corresponding to the ${\cal N}=3$ solution are constructed and shown to obey the massive type IIA Killing spinor equations.

We use this formula to compute the spin-2 spectrum of the individual theories, discuss its supermultiplet structure and, for an ${\cal N}=2$ theory in this class, the spectrum of protected operators with spin 2. We also show that the trace of the Kaluza-Klein graviton mass matrix on the dual AdS$_4$ solutions enjoys certain universality properties. These are shown to relate the class of AdS$_4$ massive IIA solutions under consideration to a similar class of AdS$_4$ solutions of $D=11$ supergravity with the same symmetries. Finally, for the ${\cal N}=2$ AdS$_4$ solution in this class, we study the entire spectrum at lowest Kaluza-Klein level and relate it to an analogue solution in $D=11$ supergravity.

In this work we study the impact of chromatic focusing of few-cycle laser pulses on high-order harmonic generation (HHG) through analysis of the emitted extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation. Chromatic focusing is usually avoided in the few-cycle regime, as the pulse spatio-temporal structure may be highly distorted by the spatiotemporal aberrations. Here, however, we demonstrate it as an additional control parameter to modify the generated XUV radiation. We present experiments where few-cycle pulses are focused by a singlet lens in a Kr gas jet. The chromatic distribution of focal lengths allows us to tune HHG spectra by changing the relative singlet-target distance. Interestingly, we also show that the degree of chromatic aberration needed to this control does not degrade substantially the harmonic conversion efficiency, still allowing for the generation of supercontinua with the chirped-pulse scheme, demonstrated previously for achromatic focussing. We back up our experiments with theoretical simulations reproducing the experimental HHG results depending on diverse parameters (input pulse spectral phase, pulse duration, focus position) and proving that, under the considered parameters, the attosecond pulse train remains very similar to the achromatic case, even showing cases of isolated attosecond pulse generation for near single-cycle driving pulses.

We address this problem holographically by studying the effect of the Romans mass on the D2-brane near-horizon geometry. Working in a consistent, effective four-dimensional setting provided by $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity with a dyonic $\textrm{ISO(7)}$ gauging, we verify the existence of a rich web of supersymmetric domain walls triggered by the Romans mass that interpolate between the (four-dimensional description of the) D2-brane and various superconformal phases. We also construct domain walls for which both endpoints are superconformal. While most of our results are numerical, we provide analytic results for the $\textrm{SU}(3)\times \textrm{U}(1)$-invariant flow into an ${\cal N}=2$ conformal phase recently discovered.

We obtain the complete, non-linear embedding of all the $D=4$ fields into the IIA metric and form potentials, and show its consistency. We first rewrite the IIA theory in an $\textrm{SO}(1,3) \times \textrm{SL}(7)$--covariant way. Then, we employ an ${\cal N}=8$ SL(7)--covariant restriction of the $D=4$ tensor hierarchy in order to find the full embedding. The redundant $D=4$ degrees of freedom introduced by the tensor hierarchy can be eliminated by writing the embedding in terms of the field strengths and exploiting the restricted duality hierarchy. In particular, closed expressions for the Freund-Rubin term are found using this technique which reveal a pattern valid for other truncations. Finally, we show that the present ${\cal N}=8$ truncation of massive IIA on $S^6$ and the ${\cal N}=2$ truncation obtained when $S^6$ is equipped with its nearly-Kähler structure, overlap in the ${\cal N}=1$, G$_2$--invariant sector of the former.

We then truncate the $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory to some smaller sectors with $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry and SU(3), $\textrm{G}_2$ and SO(4) bosonic symmetry. Canonical and superpotential formulations for these sectors are given, and their vacuum structure and spectra is analysed. Unlike the purely electric ISO(7) gauging, the dyonic gauging displays a rich structure of vacua, all of them AdS. We recover all previously known ones and find a new $\mathcal{N}=1$ vacuum with SU(3) symmetry and various non-supersymmetric vacua, all of them stable within the full $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory.

While the linear behavior of gravity in braneworld models is well understood, much less is known about full non-linear gravitational effects. Even when they agree at the linear level, these could be expected to distinguish braneworlds from a lower-dimensional theory with no brane. Black holes are a good testing ground for such studies, as they are nonlinear solutions that would be expected to reflect the background geometry. In particular, we assess the role of black hole quasinormal modes in gravitational experiments devised to be sensitive to the existence of the brane, in a lower-dimensional setting where we have analytical control. We compute quasinormal modes of brane-localized black holes and find that they follow the entropy of the corresponding black hole. This observation allows us to conclude that, surprisingly, the scattering problem we consider, at least in some regimes, does not distinguish between non-linear gravitational effects of black holes in AdS space with a brane and black holes in a spacetime of one lower dimension.

This dyonically-gauged maximal supergravity arises from consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity on $S^6$, and its magnetic coupling constant descends directly from the Romans mass. The critical points of the supergravity uplift to new AdS$_4$ massive type IIA vacua. We identify the corresponding CFT$_3$ duals as super-Chern-Simons-matter theories with simple gauge group SU$(N)$, with level $k$ given by the Romans mass. In particular, we find a critical point that uplifts to the first explicit ${\cal N}=2$ AdS$_4$ massive IIA background. We compute its free energy and that of the candidate dual Chern-Simons theory by localisation to a solvable matrix model, and find perfect agreement. This provides the first AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ precision match in massive type IIA string theory.

In this formulation the ten-dimensional theory exhibits all the 27 one-form fields and 22 of the 27 two-form fields that are required by the vector-tensor hierarchy of the five-dimensional theory. The missing 5 two-form fields must transform in the same representation as a descendant of the ten-dimensional `dual graviton'. The invariant E6(6) symmetric tensor that appears in the vector-tensor hierarchy is reproduced. Generalized vielbeine are derived from the supersymmetry transformations of the vector fields, as well as consistent expressions for the USp(8) covariant fermion fields. Implications are discussed for the consistency of the truncation of IIB supergravity compactified on the five-sphere to maximal gauged supergravity in five space-time dimensions with an SO(6) gauge group.

The entropy of these black holes is counted holographically by the well known MSW (or D1/D5) system, with certain twisted boundary conditions labeled by a twist parameter ρ. We find that the corresponding (0,4) (or (4,4)) superconformal algebras are exactly those studied by Schwimmer and Seiberg, using a twist on the outer automorphism group. The interplay between R-symmetries, ρ-algebras and holography leads us to name our construction "Rholography".

We use the KK reduction for $Σ_3=H^3/Γ$ to construct D=11 black hole solutions that describe these d=3 SCFTs at finite temperature and charge density and show that there is a superconducting instability involving a charged scalar field, and another instability involving involving neutral fields including both scalar and vector fields. We also use this KK reduction to construct a D=11 Lifshitz solution that is dual to a d=3 field theory with dynamical exponent $z\sim 39$.

In the former case we obtain the bosonic action of D=5 N=4 (ungauged) supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets. For the SE_5 case we extend a known reduction, which leads to minimal D=5 N=2 gauged supergravity, to also include a multiplet of massive fields, containing the breathing mode of the SE_5. We show that the resulting D=5 action is also consistent with N=4 gauged supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets. This theory has a supersymmetric AdS_5 vacuum, which uplifts to the class of supersymmetric AdS_5 x SE_5 solutions, that spontaneously breaks N=4 to N=2, and also a non-supersymmetric AdS_5 vacuum which uplifts to a class of solutions first found by Romans.

We analize the dipole spectrum of a two-level atom excited by a non-resonant intense monochromatic field, under the electric dipole approximation and beyond the rotating wave approximation. We show that the apparently complex spectral structure can be completely described by two families: harmonic frequencies of the driving field and field-induced nonlinear fluorescence. Our formulation of the problem provides quantitative laws for the most relevant spectral features: harmonic ratios and phases, non-perturbative Stark shift, and frequency limits of the harmonic plateau. In particular, we demonstrate the locking of the harmonic phases at the wings of the plateau opening the possibility of ultra-short pulse generation through harmonic filtering.

We propose a novel method to reconstruct the spatio-temporal amplitude and phase of the electric field of ultrashort laser pulses using spatially-resolved spectral interferometry. This method is based on a fiber-optic coupler interferometer that has certain advantages in comparison with standard interferometer systems, such as it being alignment-free and selection of the reference beam at a single point. Our technique, which we refer to as STARFISH, offers compactness and simplicity. We report its application to the experimental characterization of chirped pulses and to spatio-temporal reconstructions of a convergent beam as well as plane-plane and spherical-plane waves interferences, which we check with our simulations.

At the level of bosonic fields, we extend the known reduction, which leads to minimal N=2 gauged supergravity, to also include a multiplet of massive fields, containing the breathing mode of the Sasaki--Einstein space, and still consistent with N=2 supersymmetry. In the context of flux compactifications, the Sasaki--Einstein reductions are generalizations of type IIA SU(3)-structure reductions which include both metric and form-field flux and lead to a massive universal tensor multiplet. We carry out a similar analysis for an arbitrary weak G_2 manifold leading to an N=1 supergravity with massive fields. The straightforward extension of our results to the case of the seven-sphere would imply that there is a four-dimensional Lagrangian with N=8 supersymmetry containing both massless and massive spin two fields. We use our results to construct solutions of M-theory with non-relativistic conformal symmetry.

Expanded (super)algebras have, in general, larger dimensions than the original algebra, but also include the Inonu-Wigner and generalized IW contractions as a particular case. As an example of a physical application of expansions, we discuss the relation between the possible underlying gauge symmetry of eleven-dimensional supergravity and the superalgebra osp(1|32).

For some explicit solutions we calculate the central charges and also the conformal dimensions of certain chiral primary operators arising from wrapped membranes. For the most general class of solutions we show that there is a consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation to minimal D=5 gauged supergravity. This latter result allows us to study some aspects of the dual strongly coupled thermal plasma with a non-zero R-charge chemical potential and, in particular, we show that the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density has the universal value of 1/4 pi.

In this PhD Thesis, supersymmetry and its formulation in the context of D=11 supergravity is discussed from several perspectives. The role of generalized holonomy as a classification tool of supersymmetric supergravity solutions is reviewed, with particular emphasis on how successive supercovariant derivatives of the generalized curvature may be needed to properly define the generalized holonomy algebra. The generalized curvature is also shown to contain the supergravity equations of motion, even in the non-vanishing gravitino case. The underlying gauge symmetry of D=11 supergravity is discussed and argued to become manifest when its three-form field A_3 is expressed through a set of one-form gauge fields, associated with the generators of a suitable family of enlarged supersymmetry algebras. This family is related to osp(1|32) through expansion, a method to obtain new Lie (super)algebras of increasing dimensions from given ones. The analysis of the underlying gauge symmetry of D=11 supergravity leads naturally to enlarged supersymmetry algebras and superspaces making, thus, natural to consider actions for objects moving in such spaces. In particular, a string moving in tensorial space is discussed, describing the excitations of a state preserving 30 out of 32 supersymmetries (hence composed of two preons, hypothetical constituents of M Theory preserving 31 supersymmetries). A G-frame method is also discussed to study hypothetical preonic solutions of supergravity.

We reconsider this analysis by using the G-frame method, extend it to the IIA supergravity case, and show that there are no (bosonic) preonic solutions for type IIA either. For the classical D=11 supergravity no conclusion can be drawn yet, although the negative IIA results permit establishing the conditions that preonic solutions would have to satisfy. For supergravities with `stringy' corrections, the existence of BPS preonic solutions remains fully open.
