Time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been utilized to monitor the bimolecular electron transfer in a photocatalytic water splitting system for the first time. This has been possible by uniting the local probe and element specific character of X-ray transitions with insights from high-level ab initio calculations. The specific target has been a heteroleptic [Ir$^{\rm III}$(ppy)$_2$(bpy)]$^+$ photosensitizer, in combination with triethylamine as a sacrificial reductant and Fe$_3$(CO)$_{12}$ as a water reduction catalyst. The relevant molecular transitions have been characterized via high-resolution Ir L-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy on the picosecond time scale. The present findings enhance our understanding of functionally relevant bimolecular electron transfer reactions and thus will pave the road to rational optimization of photocatalytic performance.

Disentangling the dynamics of electrons and nuclei during nonadiabatic molecular transformations remains a considerable experimental challenge. Here we have investigated photoinduced electron transfer dynamics following a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excitation of the [Fe(bmip)2]2+ photosensitizer, where bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1- ylidine)-pyridine, with simultaneous femtosecond-resolution Fe Kα and K\b{eta} X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES) and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS). This measurement clearly shows temporal oscillations in the XES and WAXS difference signals with the same 278 fs period oscillation. The oscillatory signal originates from an Fe-ligand stretching mode vibrational wavepacket on a triplet metal-centered (3MC) excited state surface. The vibrational wavepacket is created by 40% of the excited population that undergoes electron transfer from the non-equilibrium MLCT excited state to the 3MC excited state with a 110 fs time constant, while the other 60% relaxes to a 3MLCT excited state in parallel. The sensitivity of the Kα XES spectrum to molecular structure results from core-level vibronic coupling, due to a 0.7% average Fe-ligand bond length difference in the lowest energy geometry of the 1s and 2p core-ionized states. These results highlight the importance of vibronic effects in time-resolved XES experiments and demonstrate the role of metal-centered excited states in the electronic excited state relaxation dynamics of an Fe carbene photosensitizer.

High energy resolution, hard X-ray spectroscopies are powerful element selective probes of the electronic and local structure of matter, with diverse applications in chemistry, physics, biology and materials science. The routine application of these techniques is hindered by the complicated and slow access to synchrotron radiation facilities. Here we propose a new, economic, easily operated laboratory high resolution von Hámos type X-ray spectrometer, which offers rapid transmission experiments for X-ray absorption, and is also capable of recording X-ray emission spectra. The use of a cylindrical analyzer crystal and a position sensitive detector enabled us to build a maintenance free, flexible setup with low operational costs, while delivering synchrotron grade signal to noise measurements in reasonable acquisition times. We demonstrate the proof of principle and give examples for both measurement types. Finally, tracking of a several day long chemical transformation, a case better suited for laboratory than synchrotron investigation, is also presented.

We study the structural dynamics of photoexcited [Co(terpy)2]2+ in an aqueous solution with ultrafast x-ray diffuse scattering experiments conducted at the Linac Coherent Light Source. Through direct comparisons with density functional theory calculations, our analysis shows that the photoexcitation event leads to elongation of the Co-N bonds, followed by coherent Co-N bond length oscillations arising from the impulsive excitation of a vibrational mode dominated by the symmetrical stretch of all six Co-N bonds. This mode has a period of 0.33 ps and decays on a subpicosecond time scale. We find that the equilibrium bond-elongated structure of the high spin state is established on a single-picosecond time scale and that this state has a lifetime of ~ 7 ps.

The cobalt oxide system LaCoO$_3$ and its Sr-doped child compounds have been intensively studied for decades due to their intriguing magnetic and electronic properties. Preparing thin La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CoO$_3$ (LSCO) films on different substrates allows for studies with a new type of perturbation, as the films are subject to substrate-dependent epitaxial strain. By choosing a proper substrate for a thin film grow, not only compressing but also tensile strain can be applied. The consequences for the fundamental physical properties are dramatic: while compressed films are metallic, as the bulk material, films under tensile strain become insulating. The goal of this work is to determine the strain tensor in LSCO films prepared on LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition using RBS/channelling methods. Apart from the composition and defect structure of the samples, the depth dependence of the strain tensor, the cell parameters, and the volume of the unit cell are also determined. Asymmetric behaviour of the strained cell parameters is found on both substrates. This asymmetry is rather weak in the case of LSCO film grown on LaAlO$_3$, while stronger on SrTiO$_3$ substrate. The strain is more effective at the interface, some relaxation can be observed near to the surface.

We report on an experiment using nuclear resonance scattering of synchrotron radiation, which demonstrates that magneto-optical materials do not necessarily violate reciprocity. The setting enables to switch easily between reciprocity and its violation. In the latter case, the exhibited reciprocity violation is orders of magnitude larger than achieved by previous wave scattering experiments.

Extended with current synchrotron based X-ray spectroscopies, these data help to characterize the volume as well as the local electric and magnetic properties of the distinct phases. A simple model based on a random distribution of the do** Sr ions describes well both the evolution of the separated phases as well as the variation of the Co spin state. The experiments suggest that Sr do** initiates small droplets and a high degree of do** driven cobalt spin-state transition, while the Sr-free second phase vanishes rapidly with increasing Sr content.

Plasmon energy calculations based on first-principles electronic band structures and a quasi-classical plasmon model allow us to identify a pressure-induced increase in the electron-ion interaction and associated changes in the electronic band structure as the origin of these deviations, rather than effects of exchange and correlation. Additional IXS results obtained for K and Rb are addressed briefly.

The response of the low-lying Ba 5p and Y 4p core electrons is shown to interact strongly with the Cu 3d and O 2p excitations, with important consequences on screening. The agreement between IXS and TDDFT results is excellent, apart from a new type of excitations, mainly related to loosely bound Ba electrons and significantly affected by correlations. This points to correlation mechanisms not fully described by TDDFT that might have a role in giving rise to antiscreening.

Angular dependent core-hole screening effects have been found in the cobalt K-edge x-ray absorption spectrum of LiCoO2, using high-resolution data and parameter-free GGA+U calculations. The Co 1s core-hole on the absorber causes strong local attraction. The core-hole screening on the nearest neighbours cobalt induces a 2 eV shift in the density of states with respect to the on-site 1s-3d transitions, as detected in the Co K pre-edge spectrum. Our DFT+U calculations reveal that the off-site screening is different in the out-of-plane direction, where a 3 eV shift is visible in both calculations and experiment. The detailed analysis of the inclusion of the core-hole potential and the Hubbard parameter U shows that the core-hole is essential for the off-site screening, while U improves the description of the angular dependent screening effects. In the case of oxygen K-edge, both the core-hole potential and the Hubbard parameter improve the relative positions of the spectral features.

For modern Gas sensors, high sensitivity and low power are expected. This paper discusses design, simulation and fabrication of new Micromachined Thermal Converters (MTCs) based on GaAs developed for Gas sensors. Metal oxide gas sensors generally work in high temperature mode that is required for chemical reactions to be performed between molecules of the specified gas and the surface of sensing material. There is a low power consumption required to obtain the operation temperatures in the range of 200 to 500 oC. High thermal isolation of these devices solves consumption problem and can be made by designing of free standing micromechanical hot plates. Mechanical stability and a fast thermal response are especially significant parameters that can not be neglected. These characteristics can be achieved with new concept of GaAs thermal converter.

We report on strong dipole transitions to 3d orbitals of neighboring Co atoms in the Co 1s x-ray absorption pre-edge. They are revealed by applying high-resolution resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) to compounds containing CoO6 clusters. When contrasted to quadrupole local 1s3d excitations, these non-local 1s3d transitions are identified by their energy dispersion and angular dependence, their sensitivity to second-shell effects (i.e. the connection mode of the CoO6 octahedra and the bond lengths), and an upwards energy shift of 2.5 eV due to the poorer screening of the core hole. The experiment reveals that the intensity of the non-local transitions gauges the oxygen-mediated 4p-O-3d intersite hybridization. We propose a revised interpretation of the pre-edges of transition metal compounds. Detailed analysis of these new features in the pre-edge offers a unique insight in the oxygen mediated metal-metal interactions in transition metal-based systems, which is a crucial aspect in orbital ordering and related electronic and magnetic properties. In addition, the exceptional resolving power of the present 1s2p RXES experiment allows us to demonstrate the coherent second-order nature of the underlying scattering process.

We observe a strong modification of the magnetism in the megabar range in all the samples except NiO. The results are analyzed within a multiplet approach including charge-transfer effects. The pressure dependence of the emission line is well accounted for by changes of the ligand field acting on the d electrons and allows us to extract parameters like local d-hybridization strength, O-2p bandwidth and ionic crystal field across the magnetic transition. This approach allows a first-hand insight into the mechanism of the pressure induced spin transition.

The electronic properties of Co in bulk Na0.7CoO2 and the superconducting hydrated compound Na0.35CoO2 - y H2O have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) using hard x-rays. The XAS spectra at the Co K-edge were measured in both compounds with two different polarization directions. The changes in the XAS spectra upon hydration and their polarization dependence are well accounted for by linear muffin- tin orbital calculations in the local density approximation. The underlying electronic structure indicates the strong hybridization between the Co 3d and O 2p states in both compounds, while the electron localization is enhanced in the hydrated compound due to the increase of the Co-Co interplanar distance. The Co K pre-edge further highlights the splitting of the d band as a result of the crystal field effect and demonstrates the Co valency increase when Na0.7CoO2 is hydrated. The RIXS spectra measured at the Co K-edge show an energy loss feature around 10 eV in both compounds in fair agreement with the calculated dynamical structure factor. The RIXS feature is associated to a damped plasmon excitation.
