Balanced data is required for deep neural networks (DNNs) when learning to perform power system stability assessment. However, power system measurement data contains relatively few events from where power system dynamics can be learnt. To mitigate this imbalance, we propose a novel data augmentation strategy preserving the dynamic characteristics to be learnt. The augmentation is performed using Variational Mode Decomposition. The detrended and the augmented data are tested for distributions similarity using Kernel Maximum Mean Discrepancy test. In addition, the effectiveness of the augmentation methodology is validated via training an Encoder DNN utilizing original data, testing using the augmented data, and evaluating the Encoder's performance employing several metrics.

Inverter-based solar energy sources are becoming widely integrated into modern power systems. However, their impacts on the system in the frequency domain are rarely investigated at a higher frequency range than conventional electromechanical oscillations. This paper presents evidence of the emergence of an oscillation mode injected by inverter-based solar energy sources in Dominion Energy's service territory. This new mode was recognized from the analysis of real-world ambient synchrophasor and point-of-wave data. The analysis was performed by develo** customized synchrophasor analysis tools deployed on the PredictiveGrid^{TM} platform implemented at Dominion Energy. Herein, we describe and illustrate the preliminary analysis results acquired from spectrogram observations, power spectral density plots, and mode shape estimation. The emergence and propagation of this new mode in Dominion Energy's footprint is illustrated using a heatmap based on a proposed frequency component energy metric, which helps to assess this oscillation's spread and impact.

Monitoring and modelling the power grid frequency is key to ensuring stability in the electrical power system. Many tools exist to investigate the detailed deterministic dynamics and especially the bulk behaviour of the frequency. However, far less attention has been paid to its stochastic properties, and there is a need for a cohesive framework that couples both short-time scale fluctuations and bulk behaviour. Moreover, commonly assumed uncorrelated stochastic noise is predominantly employed in modelling in energy systems. In this publication, we examine the stochastic properties of six synchronous power-grid frequency recording with high-temporal resolution of the Nordic Grid from September 2013, focusing on the increments of the frequency recordings. We show that these increments follow non-Gaussian statistics and display spatial and temporal correlations. Furthermore, we report two different physical synchronisation phenomena: a very short timescale phase synchronisation ($<2\,$s) followed by a slightly larger timescale amplitude synchronisation ($2\,$s-$5\,$s). Overall, these results provide guidance on how to model fluctuations in power systems.

Today's evolving power system contains an increasing amount of power electronic interfaced energy sources and loads that require a paradigm shift in utility operations. Sub-synchronous oscillations at frequencies around 13-15 Hz, for instance, have been reported by utilities due to wind farm controller interactions with the grid. Dynamics at such frequencies are unobservable by most SCADA tools due to low sampling frequencies and lack of synchronization. Real-time or off-line frequency domain analysis of phasor measurement unit (PMU) data has become a valuable method to identify such phenomena, at the expense of costly power system data and communication infrastructure. This article proposes an alternative machine learning (ML) based application for sub-synchronous oscillation detection in wind farm applications. The application is targeted for real-time implementation at the edge, resulting in significant savings in terms of data and communication requirements. Validation is performed using data from a North American wind farm operator.

Timely recognition of voltage instability is crucial to allow for effective control and protection interventions. Phasor measurements units (PMUs) can be utilized to provide high sampling rate time-synchronized voltage and current phasors suitable for wide-area voltage instability detection. However, PMU data contains unwanted measurement errors and noise, which may affect the results of applications using these measurements for voltage instability detection. The aim of this article is to revisit a sensitivities calculation to detect voltage instability by applying a method utilizing linear regression for preprocessing PMU data. The methodology is validated using both real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulation and real PMU measurements from Norwegian network.
