This paper presents a new and improved DareFightingICE platform, a fighting game platform with a focus on visually impaired players (VIPs), in the Unity game engine. It also introduces the separation of the DareFightingICE Competition into two standalone competitions called DareFightingICE Sound Design Competition and DareFightingICE AI Competition--at the 2024 IEEE Conference on Games (CoG)--in which a new platform will be used. This new platform is an enhanced version of the old DareFightingICE platform, having a better audio system to convey 3D sound and a better way to send audio data to AI agents. With this enhancement and by utilizing Unity, the new DareFightingICE platform is more accessible in terms of adding new features for VIPs and future audio research. This paper also improves the evaluation method for evaluating sound designs in the Sound Design Competition which will ensure a better sound design for VIPs as this competition continues to run at future CoG. To the best of our knowledge, both of our competitions are first of their kind, and the connection between the competitions to mutually improve the entries' quality with time makes these competitions an important part of representing an often overlooked segment within the broader gaming community, VIPs.

This paper proposes a delay mechanism to mitigate the impact of latency differences in the gRPC framework--a high-performance, open-source universal remote procedure call (RPC) framework--between different programming languages on the performance of agents in DareFightingICE, a fighting game research platform. The study finds that gRPC latency differences between Java and Python can significantly impact real-time decision-making. Without a delay mechanism, Java-based agents outperform Python-based ones due to lower gRPC latency on the Java platform. However, with the proposed delay mechanism, both Java-based and Python-based agents exhibit similar performance, leading to a fair comparison between agents developed using different programming languages. Thus, this work underscores the crucial importance of considering gRPC latency when develo** and evaluating agents in DareFightingICE, and the insights gained could potentially extend to other gRPC-based applications.

This paper presents a new communication interface for the DareFightingICE platform, a Java-based fighting game focused on implementing AI for controlling a non-player character. The interface uses an open-source remote procedure call, gRPC to improve the efficiency of data transfer between the game and the AI, reducing the time spent on receiving information from the game server. This is important because the main challenge of implementing AI in a fighting game is the need for the AI to select an action to perform within a short response time. The DareFightingICE platform has been integrated with Py4J, allowing developers to create AIs using Python. However, Py4J is less efficient at handling large amounts of data, resulting in excessive latency. In contrast, gRPC is well-suited for transmitting large amounts of data. To evaluate the effectiveness of the new communication interface, we conducted an experiment comparing the latency of gRPC and Py4J, using a rule-based AI that sends a kick command regardless of the information received from the game server. The experiment results showed not only a 65\% reduction in latency but also improved stability and eliminated missed frames compared to the current interface.

This paper presents a new Lyapunov-based nonlinear model predictive controller (LNMPC) for the attitude control problem of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which is essential for their functioning operation. The controller is designed based on a quadratic cost function integrating UAV dynamics and system constraints. An additional contraction constraint is then introduced to ensure closed-loop system stability. That constraint is fulfilled via a Lyapunov function derived from a sliding mode controller (SMC). The feasibility and stability of the LNMPC are finally proved. Simulation and comparison results show that the proposed controller guarantees the system stability and outperforms other state-of-the-art nonlinear controllers such as the backstep** controller (BSC) and SMC. In addition, the proposed controller can be integrated into an existing UAV model in the Gazebo simulator to perform software-in-the-loop tests. The results show that the LNMPC is better than the built-in PID controller of the UAV, which confirms the validity and applicability of our proposed approach.

While state-of-the-art AIs rely mostly on visual or structured observations provided by their environments, learning to play games from only sound is still new and thus challenging. We propose different approaches to process audio data and use the Proximal Policy Optimization algorithm for our blind AI. We also propose to use our blind AI in evaluation of sound designs submitted to the competition and define two metrics for this task. The experimental results show the effectiveness of not only our blind AI but also the proposed two metrics.

In recent years, the monitoring of compositional data using control charts has been investigated in the Statistical Process Control field. In this study, we will design a Phase II Multivariate Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (MEWMA) control chart with variable sampling intervals to monitor compositional data based on isometric log-ratio transformation. The Average Time to Signal will be computed based on the Markov chain approach to investigate the performance of proposed chart. We also propose an optimal procedure to obtain the optimal control limit, smoothing constant, and out-of-control Average Time to Signal for different shift sizes and short sampling intervals. The performance of proposed chart in comparison with the standard MEWMA chart for monitoring compositional data is also provided. Finally, we end the paper with a conclusion and some recommendations for future research.

This paper presents a new competition -- at the 2022 IEEE Conference on Games (CoG) -- called DareFightingICE Competition. The competition has two tracks: a sound design track and an AI track. The game platform for this competition is also called DareFightingICE, a fighting game platform. DareFightingICE is a sound-design-enhanced version of FightingICE, used earlier in a competition at CoG until 2021 to promote artificial intelligence (AI) research in fighting games. In the sound design track, participants compete for the best sound design, given the default sound design of DareFightingICE as a sample, where we define a sound design as a set of sound effects combined with the source code that implements their timing-control algorithm. Participants of the AI track are asked to develop their AI algorithm that controls a character given only sound as the input (blind AI) to fight against their opponent; a sample deep-learning blind AI will be provided by us. Our means to maximize the synergy between the two tracks are also described. This competition serves to come up with effective sound designs for visually impaired players, a group in the gaming community which has been mostly ignored. To the best of our knowledge, DareFightingICE Competition is the first of its kind within and outside of CoG.

Biolasers made of biological materials have attracted a great of research attention due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability, which have the potential for biosensors and biointegration. However, the current fabrication method of biolasers suffers several limitations such as complicated processes, time-consuming and environmental unfriendly. In this work, a novel approach with green processes for fabricating solid-state microspheres biolasers is demonstrated. By using dehydration via a modified MicroglassificationTM technology, dye-doped bovine serum albumin (BSA) droplets can quickly (less than 10 minutes) and easily turn into solid microspheres with the diameter ranging from 10-150 μm. The size of the microspheres can be effectively controlled by changing either the concentration of BSA solution or the diameter of the initial droplets. Fabricated microspheres can act as efficient microlasers under optical pulse excitation. Lasing threshold of 7.8 μJ mm-2 and quality (Q) factor of about 1700 to 3100 are obtained. The size-dependence of lasing characteristics have been investigated and the results show a good agreement with whispering gallery mode (WGM) theory. Our finding contributes an effective technique for the fabrication of high Q factor microlasers that may be potential for applications in biological and chemical sensors.

A Building Automation System (BAS) has functions of monitoring and controlling the operation of all building sub-systems such as HVAC (Heating-Ventilation, Air-conditioning Control), electric consumption management, fire alarm control, security and access control, and appliance switching control. In the BAS, almost operations are automatically performed at the control centre, the building security therefore must be strictly protected. In the traditional system, the security is usually ensured by a number of cameras installed at fixed positions and it may results in a limited vision. To overcome this disadvantage, our paper presents a novel security system in which a mobile robot is used as a patrol. The robot is equipped with fuzzy-based algorithms to allow it to avoid the obstacles in an unknown environment as well as other necessary mechanisms demanded for its patrol mission. The experiment results show that the system satisfies the requirements for the objective of monitoring and securing the building.

The paper discusses an adaptive strategy to effectively control nonlinear manipulation motions of a dual arm robot (DAR) under system uncertainties including parameter variations, actuator nonlinearities and external disturbances. It is proposed that the control scheme is first derived from the dynamic surface control (DSC) method, which allows the robot's end-effectors to robustly track the desired trajectories. Moreover, since exactly determining the DAR system's dynamics is impractical due to the system uncertainties, the uncertain system parameters are then proposed to be adaptively estimated by the use of the radial basis function network (RBFN). The adaptation mechanism is derived from the Lyapunov theory, which theoretically guarantees stability of the closed-loop control system. The effectiveness of the proposed RBFN-DSC approach is demonstrated by implementing the algorithm in a synthetic environment with realistic parameters, where the obtained results are highly promising.

This paper presents a new optimal filter namely past observation-based extended Kalman filter for the problem of localization of Internet-based mobile robot in which the control input and the feedback measurement suffer from communication delay. The filter operates through two phases: the time update and the data correction. The time update predicts the robot position by reformulating the kinematics model to be non-memoryless. The correction step corrects the prediction by extrapolating the delayed measurement to the present and then incorporating it to the being estimate as there is no delay. The optimality of the incorporation is ensured by the derivation of a multiplier that reflects the relevance of past observations to the present. Simulations in MATLAB and experiments in a real networked robot system confirm the validity of the proposed approach.

This study proposes behavior-based navigation architecture, named BBFM, to deal with the problem of navigating the mobile robot in unknown environments in the presence of obstacles and local minimum regions. In the architecture, the complex navigation task is split into principal sub-tasks or behaviors. Each behavior is implemented by a fuzzy controller and executed independently to deal with a specific problem of navigation. The fuzzy controller is modified to contain only the fuzzification and inference procedures so that its output is a membership function representing the behavior's objective. The membership functions of all controllers are then used as the objective functions for a multi-objective optimization process to coordinate all behaviors. The result of this process is an overall control signal, which is Pareto-optimal, used to control the robot. A number of simulations, comparisons, and experiments were conducted. The results show that the proposed architecture outperforms some popular behavior-based architectures in term of accuracy, smoothness, traveled distance, and time response.

The localized low-energy interfacial excitations, or Nambu-Goldstone modes, of phase-segregated binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated analytically by means of a double-parabola approximation (DPA) to the Lagrangian density in Gross-Pitaevskii theory for a system in a uniform potential. Within this model analytic expressions are obtained for the excitations underlying capillary waves or "ripplons" for arbitrary strength $K\,(>1)$ of the phase segregation. The dispersion relation $ω\propto k^{3/2}$ is derived directly from the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations in limit that the wavelength $2π/k$ is much larger than the healing length $ξ$. The proportionality constant in the dispersion relation provides the static interfacial tension. A correction term in $ω(k)$ of order $k^{5/2}$ is calculated analytically, entailing a finite-wavelength correction factor $(1+\frac{\sqrt{K-1} \,kξ}{4\sqrt{2}\,(\sqrt{2}+\sqrt{K-1})})$. This prediction may be tested experimentally using (quasi-)uniform optical-box traps. Explicit expressions are obtained for the structural deformation of the interface due to the passing of the capillary wave. It is found that the amplitude of the wave is enhanced by an amount that is quadratic in the ratio of the phase velocity $ω/k$ to the sound velocity $c$. For generic asymmetric mixtures consisting of condensates with unequal healing lengths an additional modulation is predicted of the common value of the condensate densities at the interface.

Movement behavior of an indicator species, zebrafish (Danio rerio), was analyzed with one- and two-individual groups before and after treatment with a toxic chemical, formaldehyde, at a low concentration (1 ppm). After the boundary area had been determined based on experimental data, intermittency was defined as the probability distributions of the shadowing time during which data were above a pre-determined threshold and were obtained from experimental time-series data on forces and the inter-distances for one and two individuals. Overall intermittencies were similar in the boundary and central areas. However, the intermittencies were remarkably different between the one- and the two-individual groups: the single line was used to fit the data for the one-individual group whereas two phases were observed with breakpoints (approximately 10 seconds in logarithm) in the exponential fitting curves for the two-individual group. A difference in the probability distributions of shadowing time was observed "before" and "after" treatment for different areas. Intermittency patterns before and after treatment were contrasted in the center for the one-individual group whereas the difference was observed in the boundary for two-individual group. The intermittencies for the inter-distances of two individuals in the boundary and central areas were markedly different before and after treatment. When the differences between the intermittencies in the boundary and the central areas and between "before" and "after" treatment are considered, the distribution patterns of the shadowing time (scaling behaviors or intermittency patterns) should be a useful means of bio-monitoring to detect contaminants in the environment.

This paper produces a rate-compatible protograph LDPC code at 1k information blocklength with superior performance in both waterfall and error floor regions. The design of such codes has proved difficult in the past because the constraints imposed by structured design (protographs), rate-compatibility, as well as small block length, are not easily satisfied together. For example, as the block length decreases, the predominance of decoding threshold as the main parameter in coding design is reduced, thus complicating the search for good codes. Our rate-compatible protograph codes have rates ranging from 1/3 to 4/5 and show no error floor down to $10^{-6}$ FER.

Despite encouraging advances in the design of relay codes, several important challenges remain. Many of the existing LDPC relay codes are tightly optimized for fixed channel conditions and not easily adapted without extensive re-optimization of the code. Some have high encoding complexity and some need long block lengths to approach capacity. This paper presents a high-performance protograph-based LDPC coding scheme for the half-duplex relay channel that addresses simultaneously several important issues: structured coding that permits easy design, low encoding complexity, embedded structure for convenient adaptation to various channel conditions, and performance close to capacity with a reasonable block length. The application of the coding structure to multi-relay networks is demonstrated. Finally, a simple new methodology for evaluating the end-to-end error performance of relay coding systems is developed and used to highlight the performance of the proposed codes.

A Raikov-Type Theorem for Radial Poisson Distributions: A Proof of Kingman's Conjecture
Authors:

Abstract:
In the present paper we prove the following conjecture in Kingman, J.F.C., Random walks with spherical symmetry, Acta Math.,109, (1963), 11-53. concerning a famous Raikov's theorem of decomposition of Poisson random variables:
"If a radial sum of two independent random variables X and Y is radial Poisson, then each of them must be radial Poisson."

Context awareness is the most important research area in ubiquitous computing. In particular, for smart home, context awareness attempts to bring the best services to the home habitants. However, the implementation in the real environment is not easy and takes a long time from building the scratch. Thus, to support the implementation in the real smart home, it is necessary to demonstrate that thing can be done in the simulator in which context information can be created by virtual sensors instead of physical sensors. In this paper, we propose ISS, an Interactive Smart home Simulator system aiming at controlling and simulating the behavior of an intelligent house. The developed system aims to provide architects, designers a simulation and useful tool for understanding the interaction between environment, people and the impact of embedded and pervasive technology on in daily life. In this research, the smart house is considered as an environment made up of independent and distributed devices interacting to support user's goals and tasks. Therefore, by using ISS, the developer can realize the relationship among virtual home space, surrounded environment, use and home appliances.

Smart Home, a specific instance of ubiquitous computing, provides every family with opportunities to enjoy the power of hi-tech home living. Discovering that relationship among user, activity and context data in home environment is semantic, therefore, we apply ontology to model these relationships and then reason them as the semantic information. In this paper, we present the realization of smart home's context-aware system based on ontology. We discuss the current challenges in realizing the ontology context base. These challenges can be listed as collecting context information from heterogeneous sources, such as devices, agents, sensors into ontology, ontology management, ontology querying, and the issue related to environment database explosion.

Bandwidth allocation is a fundamental problem in communication networks. With current network moving towards the Future Internet model, the problem is further intensified as network traffic demanding far from exceeds network bandwidth capability. Maintaining a certain user satisfaction degree therefore becomes a challenge research topic. In this paper, we deal with the problem by proposing BASMIN, a novel bandwidth allocation scheme that aims to maximize network user's happiness. We also defined a new metric for evaluating network user satisfaction degree: network worth. A three-step evaluation process is then conducted to compare BASMIN efficiency with other three popular bandwidth allocation schemes. Throughout the tests, we experienced BASMIN's advantages over the others; we even found out that one of the most widely used bandwidth allocation schemes, in fact, is not effective at all.

Nowadays computing becomes increasingly mobile and pervasive. One of the important steps in pervasive computing is context-awareness. Context-aware pervasive systems rely on information about the context and user preferences to adapt their behavior. However, context-aware applications do not always behave as user's desire, and can cause users to feel dissatisfied with unexpected actions. To solve these problems, context-aware systems must provide mechanisms to adapt automatically when the context changes significantly. The interesting characteristic of context is its own behaviors which depend on various aspects of the surrounding contexts. This paper uses contextual graphs to solve the problem "the mutual relationships among the contexts". We describe the most relevant work in this area, as well as ongoing research on develo** context-aware system for ubiquitous computing based on contextual graph. The usage of contextual graph in context-awareness is expected to make it effective for developers to develop various applications with the need of context reasoning.

Network management and security is currently one of the most vibrant research areas, among which, research on detecting and identifying anomalies has attracted a lot of interest. Researchers are still struggling to find an effective and lightweight method for anomaly detection purpose. In this paper, we propose a simple, robust method that detects network anomalous traffic data based on flow monitoring. Our method works based on monitoring the four predefined metrics that capture the flow statistics of the network. In order to prove the power of the new method, we did build an application that detects network anomalies using our method. And the result of the experiments proves that by using the four simple metrics from the flow data, we do not only effectively detect but can also identify the network traffic anomalies.
