The interaction of terahertz (THz) radiation with high-frequency spin resonances in complex magnetic materials is central for modern ultrafast magnonics. Here we demonstrate strong variations of the excitation efficiency of the sub-THz exchange magnon in a single crystal ferrimagnet (Gd,Bi)$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$. An enhancement of the exchange magnon amplitude is observed when its frequency matches an eigenmode of the cavity created by the sample interfaces. Moreover, this enhancement is accompanied by a 5-fold decrease in effective dam** of the exchange mode. The THz-exchange magnon interaction in the cavity is analyzed within the developed Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert formalism for three coupled magnetization sublattices and cavity-enhanced THz field. This work presents a novel approach for the THz excitation of spin dynamics in ferrimagnets and outlines promising pathways for the controlled optimization of light-spin coupling in single crystals.

In ferromagnetic oxide epitaxial multilayers, magnetic properties and interlayer coupling are determined by a variety of factors. Beyond the contribution of interlayer exchange coupling, strain and interfacial effects, such as structural reconstructions or charge transfer, play significant roles, resulting in complex magnetic behaviour. In this study the interlayer coupling of ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3Mn0.95Ru0.05O3 (LSMRO) layers (8 nm thick) was investigated, when separated by epitaxial spacers of paramagnetic metallic LaNiO3 (LNO), in stacks exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. By varying the thickness of the spacer, it was found that the coupling between two LSMRO layers changes from antiferromagnetic (with a 4 unit cell thick LNO spacer) to ferromagnetic (with a 6 unit cells thick LNO spacer). For multilayers comprising five LSMRO layers and a 4 unit cell thick LNO spacer, the antiferromagnetic coupling was preserved. However, the effective magnetic anisotropy changed, causing the magnetization to cant more towards the in-plane direction. This behavior was corroborated by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) investigations at the Mn and Ni L3-edges. The XMCD results indicated that the 4 unit cells thick LNO spacer in the multilayer become magnetically ordered, closely following the magnetization of adjacent LSMRO layers.

We report a comprehensive Raman study of the phonon behaviour in PdSe$_2$ in the temperature range of 5 K to 300 K. A remarkable change in the Raman spectrum is observed at 120 K: a significant enhancement of the out-of-plane phonon A$^{1}_{g}$ mode, accompanied by a suppression of the in-plane A$^{2}_{g}$ and B$^{2}_{1g}$ modes. This intriguing behavior is attributed to a temperature-dependent resonant excitation effect. The results are supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which demonstrate that the electron-phonon coupling for the phonon modes varies and is strongly associated with the relevant electronic states. Furthermore, nonlinear frequency shifts are identified in all modes, indicating the decay of an optical phonon into multiple acoustic phonons. The study of Raman emission reported here, complemented by linear optical spectroscopy, reveals an unexpected scenario for the vibrational properties of PdSe$_2$ that holds substantial promise for future applications in PdSe$_2$-based optoelectronics.

Using heterodyne transient grating spectroscopy, we observe a significant enhancement of exciton diffusion within a monolayer WSe$_2$ stacked on top of graphene. We further demonstrate that the diffusion dynamics can be optically tuned on the ultrafast time scale (i.e. a few picoseconds) by altering the photoexcited charge carrier density in graphene. The results reveal that, on a time scale of a few picoseconds, the effective diffusion constant in the WSe$_2$/graphene heterostructure is approximately 40 cm$^2 $/s, representing a substantial improvement over the 2 cm$^2 $/s typical for an isolated monolayer of WSe$_2$. The enhanced diffusion can be understood in terms of a transient screening of impurities, charge traps, and defect states in WSe$_2$ by photoexcited charge carriers in graphene. Furthermore, we observe that the diffusion within WSe$_2$ is affected by interlayer interactions, like charge transfer, exhibiting different dynamic states depending on the incident excitation fluence. These findings underscore the dynamic nature of screening and diffusion processes in heterostructures of 2D semiconductors and graphene and provide valuable insights for future applications of these systems in ultrafast optoelectronic devices.

The half-filled $t_{2g}$ shell of the $t_{2g}^3$ configuration usually, in LS coupling, hosts a S = 3/2 ground state with quenched orbital moment. This state is not Jahn-Teller active. Sufficiently large spin-orbit coupling $ζ$ has been predicted to change this picture by mixing in orbital moment, giving rise to a sizable Jahn-Teller distortion. In $5d^3$ K$_2$ReCl$_6$ we study the electronic excitations using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and optical spectroscopy. We observe on-site intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations below 2 eV and corresponding overtones with two intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations on adjacent sites, the Mott gap at 2.7 eV, $t_{2g}$-to-$e_g$ excitations above 3 eV, and charge-transfer excitations at still higher energy. The intra-$t_{2g}$ excitation energies are a sensitive measure of $ζ$ and Hund's coupling $J_H$. The sizable value of $ζ\approx$ 0.29 eV places K$_2$ReCl$_6$ into the intermediate coupling regime, but $ζ/J_H \approx 0.6$ is not sufficiently large to drive a pronounced Jahn-Teller effect. We discuss the ground state wavefunction in a Kanamori picture and find that the S = 3/2 multiplet still carries about 97 % of the weight. However, the finite admixture of orbital moment allows for subtle effects. We discuss small temperature-induced changes of the optical data and find evidence for a lowering of the ground state by about 3 meV below the structural phase transitions.

We report on time-resolved nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy of a strongly correlated ruthenate, CaRuO$_3$, as a function of temperature, frequency and terahertz field strength. Third-harmonic radiation for frequencies up to 2.1 THz is observed evidently at low temperatures below 80 K, where the low-frequency linear dynamical response deviates from the Drude model and a coherent heavy quasiparticle band emerges by strong correlations associated with the Hund's coupling.Phenomenologically, by taking an experimentally observed frequency-dependent scattering rate, the deviation of the field driven kinetics from the Drude behavior is reconciled in a time-dependent Boltzmann description, which allows an attribution of the observed third-harmonic generation to the terahertz field driven nonlinear kinetics of the heavy quasiparticles.

Electrons are fully delocalized over Ta$_4$ tetrahedra, forming quasimolecular $J_{\rm tet}$=3/2 moments. The modulation of the RIXS intensity as function of the transferred momentum q allows us to determine the cluster wavefunction, which depends on competing intracluster hop** terms that mix states with different character. This mixed wavefunction is decisive for the macroscopic properties since it affects intercluster hop** and exchange interactions and furthermore renormalizes the effective spin-orbit coupling constant. The versatile wavefunction, tunable via intracluster hop**, opens a new perspective on the large family of lacunar spinels and cluster Mott insulators in general.

Understanding spin-lattice interactions in antiferromagnets is one of the most fundamental issues at the core of the recently emerging and booming fields of antiferromagnetic spintronics and magnonics. Recently, coherent nonlinear spin-lattice coupling was discovered in an antiferromagnet which opened the possibility to control the nonlinear coupling strength and thus showing a novel pathway to coherently control magnon-phonon dynamics. Here, utilizing intense narrow band terahertz (THz) pulses and tunable magnetic fields up to 7 T, we experimentally realize the conditions of the Fermi magnon-phonon resonance in antiferromagnetic $CoF_{2}$. These conditions imply that both the spin and the lattice anharmonicities harvest energy transfer between the subsystems, if the magnon eigenfrequency $f_{m}$ is twice lower than the frequency of the phonon $2f_{m}=f_{ph}$. Performing THz pump-infrared probe spectroscopy in conjunction with simulations, we explore the coupled magnon-phonon dynamics in the vicinity of the Fermi-resonance and reveal the corresponding fingerprints of an impulsive THz-induced response. This study focuses on the role of nonlinearity in spin-lattice interactions, providing insights into the control of coherent magnon-phonon energy exchange.

We demonstrate that the cubic antifluorite-type halides K$_2$OsCl$_6$, K$_2$OsBr$_6$, and Rb$_2$OsBr$_6$ are excellent realizations of non-magnetic J=0 compounds. The magnetic susceptibility shows the corresponding Van-Vleck type behavior and no sign of defects. We investigate the electronic excitations with two complementary techniques, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and optical spectroscopy. This powerful combination allows us to thoroughly study, e.g., on-site intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations and $t_{2g}$-to-$e_g$ excitations as well as inter-site excitations across the Mott gap and an exciton below the gap. In this way, we determine the electronic parameters with high accuracy, altogether yielding a comprehensive picture. In K$_2$OsCl$_6$, we find the spin-orbit coupling constant $ζ$=0.34 eV, Hund's coupling $J_H$=0.43 eV, the onset of excitations across the Mott gap at $Δ$=2.2 eV, the cubic crystal-field splitting 10Dq=3.3 eV, and the charge-transfer energy $Δ_{CT}$=4.6 eV. With $J_H/ζ$=1.3, K$_2$OsCl$_6$ is in the intermediate-coupling regime. In a $t_{2g}$-only Kanamori picture, the above values correspond to $ζ^{eff}$=0.41 eV and $J_H^{eff}$=0.28 eV, which is very close to results reported for related $5d^4$ iridates. In the tetragonal phase at 5 K, the non-cubic crystal field causes a peak splitting of the J=1 state as small as 4 meV. Compared to K$_2$OsCl$_6$, the bromides K$_2$OsBr$_6$ and Rb$_2$OsBr$_6$ show about 12-14 % smaller values of 10Dq and $Δ_{CT}$, while the spin-orbit-entangled intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations below 2 eV and hence $ζ$ and $J_H$ are reduced by less than 4 %. Furthermore, the Mott gap in K$_2$OsBr$_6$ is reduced to about 1.8 eV.

We address this elusive, exotic phase via helicity-dependent Raman scattering and analyze the Raman optical activity of excitations as a function of magnetic field and temperature. The hotly debated field regime between 7.5 T and 10.5 T is characterized by clear spectroscopic signatures such as a plateau of the Raman optical activity of the dominant, chiral spin-flip excitation. This provides direct evidence for the existence of a distinct intermediate field regime compatible with a quantum spin liquid phase.

Controlling magnetic anisotropy (MA) is important in a variety of applications including magnetic memories, spintronic sensors, and skyrmion-based data distribution. The perovskite manganite family provides a fertile playground for complex, intricate, and potentially useful structure-magnetism relations. Here we report on the MA that emerges in 10% Ru substituted $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}$ (Ru-LSMO) films for which strong perpendicular magnetization and anisotropic in-plane magnetization are found. These moderately compressively strained films possess a rich microstructure, consisting of coherently strained phase which evolves into a one dimensional (1D) periodically-modulated structure above a critical thickness. We illustrate how 10% Ru substitution plays a crucial role behind the observed MA, and how the structural distortion and 1D periodic structural modulation produce the anisotropic in-plane magnetization. We highlight the practical significance of the observed MA, which could pave the way towards the realization of cutting-edge oxide-based room temperature spintronic memory devices.

Spin-orbit coupling locks spin direction and spatial orientation and generates, in semi-classical magnets, a local spin easy-axis and associated ordering. Quantum spin-1/2's defy this fate: rather than spins becoming locally anisotropic, the spin-spin interactions do. Consequently interactions become dependent on the spatial orientation of bonds between spins, prime theoretical examples of which are Kitaev magnets. Bond-directional interactions imply the existence of bond-directional magnetic modes, predicted spin excitations that render crystallographically equivalent bonds magnetically inequivalent, which yet have remained elusive experimentally. Here we show that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering allows us to explicitly probe the bond-directional character of magnetic excitations. To do so, we use a scattering plane spanned by one bond and the corresponding spin component and scan a range of momentum transfer that encompasses multiple Brillouin zones. Applying this approach to Na$_2$IrO$_3$ we establish the different bond-directional characters of magnetic excitations at 10 meV and 45 meV. Combined with the observation of spin-spin correlations that are confined to a single bond, this experimentally validates the Kitaev character of exchange interactions long proposed for this material.

We demonstrate that magnetism in Ba$_3$Ti$_{3-x}$Ir$_x$O$_9$ is governed by an unconventional realization of strong disorder, where cation disorder affects the character of the local moments. RIXS interferometry, studying the RIXS intensity over a broad range of transferred momentum q, is ideally suited to assign different excitations to different Ir sites. We find pronounced Ir-Ti site mixing. Both ions are distributed over two crystallographically inequivalent sites, giving rise to a coexistence of quasimolecular singlet states on Ir2O9 dimers and spin-orbit entangled j=1/2 moments of 5d$^5$ Ir$^{4+}$ ions. RIXS reveals different kinds of strong magnetic couplings for different bonding geometries, highlighting the role of cation disorder for the suppression of long-range magnetic order in this family of compounds.

We investigate epitaxial heterostructures of ferromagnetic manganite, La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$Mn$_{0.9}$Ru$_{0.1}$O$_3$, by polar Kerr effect and magnetometry. The manganite layers are separated by or interfaced with a layer of nickelate, NdNiO$_3$. Kerr rotation hysteresis loops of trilayers, with two manganite layers of different thickness separated by a nickelate layer, have intriguing humplike features, when measured with light of 400 nm wavelength. By investigating additional reference samples we disentangle the contributions of the individual layers to the loops: we show that the humps originate from the opposite sense of the Kerr rotation of the two different ferromagnetic layers, combined with the additive behavior of the Kerr signal.

Using polarization selective spontaneous Raman scattering, we have investigated the 5$d$ transition metal compound K$_2$ReCl$_6$ which displays a series of structural phase transitions. We observe a violation of the Raman selection rules in the cubic high temperature phase as well as a low-energy scattering continuum persistent throughout the investigated temperature range from 300 down to 5 K. The continuum couples to one of the phonon modes at temperatures above the lowest structural phase transition at 76 K. We propose a common origin of these observations caused by local fluctuations in the orientation of the ReCl$_6$ octahedra which locally break the long-range cubic symmetry. Consistent results from the related non-magnetic compound K$_2$SnCl$_6$ support this interpretation.

The high-order harmonics in the superconducting phase reflects nonequilibrium dynamics of the superconducting order parameter in MgB$_2$, which is probed via nonlinear coupling to the terahertz field. The observed temperature and field dependence of the nonlinear response allows to establish the superconducting phase diagram.

The mixed-valent iridate Ba3InIr2O9 has been discussed as a promising candidate for quantum spin-liquid behavior. The compound exhibits Ir$^{4.5+}$ ions in face-sharing IrO6 octahedra forming Ir2O9 dimers with three t2g holes per dimer. Our results establish Ba3InIr2O9 as a cluster Mott insulator. Strong intra-dimer hop** delocalizes the three t2g holes in quasi-molecular dimer states while inter-dimer charge fluctuations are suppressed by Coulomb repulsion. The magnetism of Ba3InIr2O9 emerges from spin-orbit entangled quasi-molecular moments with yet unexplored interactions, opening up a new route to unconventional magnetic properties of 5d compounds. Using single-crystal x-ray diffraction we find the monoclinic space group C2/c already at room temperature. Dielectric spectroscopy shows insulating behavior. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) reveals a rich excitation spectrum below 1.5 eV with a sinusoidal dynamical structure factor that unambiguously demonstrates the quasi-molecular character of the electronic states. Below 0.3 eV, we observe a series of excitations. According to exact diagonalization calculations, such low-energy excitations reflect the proximity of Ba3InIr2O9 to a hop**-induced phase transition based on the condensation of a quasi-molecular spin-orbit exciton. The dimer ground state roughly hosts two holes in a bonding j=1/2 orbital and the third hole in a bonding j=3/2 orbital.

Due to the strong lattice-property relationships which exist in complex oxide epitaxial layers, their electronic and magnetic properties can be modulated by structural distortions induced at the atomic scale. The modification and control can be affected at coherent heterointerfaces by epitaxial strain imposed by the substrate or by structural modifications to accommodate the film-substrate symmetry mismatch. Often these act in conjunction with a strong dependence on the layer thickness, especially for ultrathin layers. Moreover, as a result of these effects, the temperature dependence of the structure may deviate largely from that of the bulk. The temperature-dependent structure of 3 to 44 unit cell thick ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ films grown on Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$ substrates are investigated using a combination of high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy. This aims to shed light on the intriguing magnetic and magnetotransport properties of epitaxial SRO layers, subjected to extensive investigations lately. The oxygen octahedral tilts and rotations are found to be strongly dependent on the temperature, the film thickness, and the distance away from the film-substrate interface. As a striking manifestation of the coupling between magnetic order and lattice structure, the Invar effect is observed below the ferromagnetic transition temperature in epitaxial layers as thin as 8 unit cells, similar to bulk ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$.

We present time-resolved magneto-optical spectroscopy on the magnetic Mott-Hubbard-insulating Kitaev spin liquid candidate $α$-RuCl$_3$ to investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of its antiferromagnetically ordered zigzag groundstate after photoexcitation. A systematic study of the transient magnetic linear dichroism under different experimental conditions (temperature, external magnetic field, photoexcitation density) gives direct access to the dynamical interplay of charge excitations with the zigzag ordered state on ultrashort time scales. We observe a rather slow initial demagnetization (few to 10s of ps) followed by a long-lived non-thermal antiferromagnetic spin-disordered state (100$-$1000s of ps), which can be understood in terms of holons and doublons disordering the antiferromagnetic background after photoexcitation. Varying temperature and fluence in the presence of an external magnetic field reveals two distinct photoinduced dynamics associated with the zigzag and quantum paramagnetic disordered phases. The photo-induced non-thermal spin-disordered state shows universal compressed-exponential recovery dynamics related to the growth and propagation of zigzag domains on nanosecond time scales, which is interpreted within the framework of the Fatuzzo-Labrune model for magnetization reversal. The study of nonequilibrium states in strongly correlated materials is a relatively unexplored topic, but our results are expected to be extendable to a large class of Mott-Hubbard insulator materials with strong spin-orbit coupling.

$α$-RuCl$_3$ is a promising candidate material to realize the so far elusive quantum spin liquid ground state. However, at low temperatures, the coexistence of different exchange interactions couple the effective pseudospins into an antiferromagnetically zigzag (ZZ) ordered state. The low-field evolution of spin structure is still a matter of debate and the magnetic anisotropy within the honeycomb planes is an open and challenging question. Here, we investigate the evolution of the ZZ order parameter by second-order magneto-optical effects, the magnetic linear dichroism and magnetic linear birefringence. Our results clarify the presence and nature of metamagnetic transitions in the ZZ phase of $α$-RuCl$_3$. Our experimental observations show the presence of initial magnetic domain repopulation followed by a spin-flop transition for small in-plane applied magnetic fields ($\approx$ 1.6 T) along specific crystallographic directions. In addition, using a magneto-optical approach, we detected the recently reported emergence of a field-induced intermediate phase before suppressing the ZZ order. Our results disclose the details of various angle-dependent in-plane metamagnetic transitions quantifying the bond-anisotropic interactions present in $α$-RuCl$_3$

In case of skyrmion hosting multilayers, coupling of skyrmions across the magnetic layers is highly desirable. Here the magnetic interlayer coupling was studied in epitaxial all-oxide heterostructures of ferromagnetic perovskite SrRuO$_3$ layers separated by spacers of the strong spin-orbit coupling oxide SrIrO$_3$. This combination of oxide layers is being discussed as a potential candidate system to host Néel skyrmions. First order reversal curve (FORC) measurements were performed in order to distinguish between magnetic switching processes of the individual layers and to disentangle the signal of soft magnetic impurities from the samples$'$ signal. Additionally, FORC investigations enabled to determine whether the coupling between the magnetic layers is ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic. The observed interlayer coupling strength was weak for all the heterostructures, with SrIrO$_3$ spacers between 2 monolayers and 12 monolayers thick.

Long linear carbon-chains have been attracting intense interest arising from the remarkable properties predicted and their potential applications in future nanotechnology. Here we comprehensively interrogate the excitonic transitions and the associated relaxation dynamics of nanotube confined long linear carbon-chains by using steady state and time-resolved Raman spectroscopies. The exciton relaxation dynamics on the confined carbon-chains occurs on a hundreds of picoseconds timescale, in strong contrast to the host dynamics that occurs on a few picosecond timescale. A prominent time-resolved Raman response is observed over a broad energy range extending from 1.2 to 2.8 eV, which includes the strong Raman resonance region around 2.2 eV. Evidence for a strong coupling between the chain and the nanotube host is found from the dynamics at high excitation energies which provides a clear evidence for an efficient energy transfer from the host carbon nanotube to the chain. Our experimental study presents the first unique characterization of the long linear carbon-chain exciton dynamics, providing indispensable knowledge for the understanding of the interactions between different carbon allotropes.

Third-harmonic generation (THG) is observed below $T_c$ by driving the system with intense narrowband THz pulses. For the pump-pulse frequencies $f=$ 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 THz, temperature-dependent evolution of the THG signals exhibits a resonance maximum at the temperatures with the resonance conditions $2f=2Δ_π(T)$ fulfilled, for the dirty-limit superconducting gap $2Δ_π$. In contrast, for $f=$ 0.6 and 0.7 THz with $2f>2Δ_π(T\rightarrow0)=1.03$ THz, the THG intensity increases monotonically with decreasing temperature. Moreover, for $2f<2Δ_π(T\rightarrow0)$ the THG is found nearly isotropic with respect to the pump-pulse polarization. These results suggest a predominant contribution of the driven Higgs amplitude mode of the dirty-limit $π$-band superconducting gap, pointing to the importance of scattering for observation of the Higgs mode in superconductors.

For the below-bandgap excitation, an exponential decay of the pump-probe signals is observed, which exhibits linear dependence on the pump-pulse fluence. In contrast, the relaxation dynamics for the above-bandgap excitation is characterized by a compressed exponential decay and nonlinear fluence dependence at high pump flunences, which reflects interaction of the excited nonequilibrium states.

The proposal that very small Néel skyrmions can form in SrRuO$_3$/SrIrO$_3$ epitaxial bilayers and that the electric field-effect can be used to manipulate these skyrmions in gated devices strongly stimulated the recent research of SrRuO$_3$ heterostructures. A strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, combined with the breaking of inversion symmetry, was considered as the driving force for the formation of skyrmions in SrRuO$_3$/SrIrO$_3$ bilayers. Here, we investigated nominally symmetric heterostructures in which an ultrathin ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ layer is sandwiched between large spin-orbit coupling SrIrO$_3$ layers, for which the conditions are not favorable for the emergence of a net interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Previously the formation of skyrmions in the asymmetric SrRuO$_3$/SrIrO$_3$ bilayers was inferred from anomalous Hall resistance loops showing humplike features that resembled topological Hall effect contributions. Symmetric SrIrO$_3$/SrRuO$_3$/SrIrO$_3$ trilayers do not show hump anomalies in the Hall loops. However, the anomalous Hall resistance loops of symmetric multilayers, in which the trilayer is stacked several times, do exhibit the humplike structures, similar to the asymmetric SrRuO$_3$/SrIrO$_3$ bilayers. The origin of the Hall effect loop anomalies likely resides in unavoidable differences in the electronic and magnetic properties of the individual SrRuO$_3$ layers rather than in the formation of skyrmions.

Excitation by light pulses enables the manipulation of phases of quantum condensed matter. Here, we photoexcite high-energy holon-doublon pairs as a way to alter the magnetic free energy landscape of the Kitaev-Heisenberg magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$, with the aim to dynamically stabilize a proximate spin liquid phase. The holon-doublon pair recombination through multimagnon emission is tracked through the time-evolution of the magnetic linear dichroism originating from the competing zigzag spin ordered ground state. A small holon-doublon density suffices to reach a spin disordered state. The phase transition is described within a dynamic Ginzburg-Landau framework, corroborating the quasistationary nature of the transient spin disordered phase. Our work provides insight into the coupling between the electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and suggests a new route to reach a proximate spin liquid phase in Kitaev-Heisenberg magnets.

The honeycomb compound $α$-RuCl$_3$ is widely discussed as a proximate Kitaev spin-liquid material. This scenario builds on spin-orbit entangled $j = 1/2$ moments arising for a $t_{2g}^5$ electron configuration with strong spin-orbit coupling $λ$ and a large cubic crystal field. The low-energy electronic structure of $α$-RuCl$_3$, however, is still puzzling. In particular infrared absorption features at 0.30 eV, 0.53 eV, and 0.75 eV seem to be at odds with theory. Also the energy of the spin-orbit exciton, the excitation from $j = 1/2$ to 3/2, and thus the value of $λ$ are controversial. Combining infrared and Raman data, we show that the infrared features can be attributed to single, double, and triple spin-orbit excitons. We find $λ$ = 0.16 eV and $Δ$ =42(4) meV for the observed non-cubic crystal-field splitting, supporting the validity of the $j= 1/2$ picture for $α$-RuCl$_3$. The unusual strength of the double excitation is related to the underlying hop** interactions which form the basis for dominant Kitaev exchange.

Exciton intervalley scattering, annihilation and relaxation dynamics, and diffusive transport in a monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are central to the functionality of devices based on them. This motivated us to investigate these properties in exfoliated high-quality monolayer MoSe2 using heterodyned nonlinear four-wave-mixing transient grating spectroscopy. While free exciton excitations are found to be long-lived (~230 ps), an extremely fast intervalley scattering ( less than 120 fs) is observed leading to a negligible valley polarization, consistent with steady state photoluminescence measurements. The exciton population decay shows an appreciable contribution from exciton-exciton annihilation reactions with an annihilation constant of ~ 0.01 cm2s-1, which in addition leads to an extra contribution to the transient grating response. The underlying excitonic dynamics were numerically modeled by including exciton-exciton annihilation, also in the diffusion equation, which allows extraction of the diffusion constant, D ~1.4 cm2s-1. Our results provide a method that allows for the disentanglement of the intricate dynamics involving many-body annihilation processes and a detailed characterization of the excitonic properties of monolayer MoSe2

Harmonic generation is a general characteristic of driven nonlinear systems, and serves as an efficient tool for investigating the fundamental principles that govern the ultrafast nonlinear dynamics. In atomic gases, high-harmonic radiation is produced via a three-step process of ionization, acceleration, and recollision by strong-field infrared laser. This mechanism has been intensively investigated in the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray regions, forming the basis of attosecond research. In solid-state materials, which are characterized by crystalline symmetry and strong interactions, yielding of harmonics has just recently been reported. The observed high-harmonic generation was interpreted with fundamentally different mechanisms, such as interband tunneling combined with dynamical Bloch oscillations, intraband thermodynamics and nonlinear dynamics, and many-body electronic interactions. Here, in a distinctly different context of three-dimensional Dirac semimetal, we report on experimental observation of high-harmonic generation up to the seventh order driven by strong-field terahertz pulses. The observed non-perturbative high-harmonic generation is interpreted as a generic feature of terahertz-field driven nonlinear intraband kinetics of Dirac fermions. We anticipate that our results will trigger great interest in detection, manipulation, and coherent control of the nonlinear response in the vast family of three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl materials.

SRO and RIZ ultra-thin films were epitaxially grown at 650C onto vicinal SrTiO$_3$ (100) single-crystalline substrates to a nominal thickness of 4 and 4/2/2 unit cells (uc), respectively. Our correlated analysis allows associating topographic sample features of overgrown individual layers to their residual magnetization, as is shown here to be relevant for interpreting the macroscopic AHE data. Although the hump-like features in the AHE suggest a magnetically extured skyrmion phase to exist around 55 K associated to the topological Hall effect (THE), both our MOKE and MFM data cannot support this theory. In contrast, our SFM/MFM local-scale analysis finds the local coercive field to be strongly dependent on the effective layer thickness and stoichiometry in both the SRO and RIZ samples, with huge impact on the local band-structure. In fact, it is these variations that in turn mimic a potential THE through anomalies in the AHE resistivity loops.

We study dynamics of incoherent exciton formation under interband photoexcitation in Cu$_2$O using time-and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy at 90 K. Hot electrons injected by allowed optical transitions with 3.40-eV photons show ultrafast relaxation to the conduction-band minimum (CBM), surviving up to 500 fs after excitation. While hot-electron states with high excess energy show a rapid population decay of ~25 fs, an abrupt increase to 130 fs is observed for states with excess energies of 0.15 eV. This latter is interpreted in terms of phonon bottleneck dynamics characteristic of LO-phonon mediated energy relaxation. Excitons, having a small binding energy of 60 meV, are formed below the CBM quasi-instantaneously and subsequently relax to the 1S-exciton state of the yellow series within 1.5 ps. We find that, together with possible plasma screening for electron-hole interaction, the cooling of exciton center-of-mass motion plays an important role in the exciton relaxation dynamics. The characteristic features of exciton photoionization process are critically discussed based on the detailed analysis of angle-resolved photoemission results for the 1S excitons formed 1.5 ps after excitation.

Based on the detailed balance, the optical phonon population is retrieved, which shows an instant build-up and a relaxation lifetime of around 4 ps at an exciton density E12 cm-2. The corresponding optical phonon temperature rises by 25 K, eventually, after some 10s of picoseconds, leading to a lattice heating by only around 3 K. The exciton relaxation dynamics extracted from the transient vibrational Raman response shows a strong excitation density dependence, signaling an important bi-molecular contribution to the decay. The exciton relaxation rate is found to be (70 ps)-1 and exciton-exciton annihilation rate 0.1 cm2s-1. These results provide valuable insight into the thermal dynamics after optical excitation and enhance the understanding of the fundamental exciton dynamics in two-dimensional transition metal materials.

Layered $α$-RuCl3 has been discussed as a proximate Kitaev spin liquid compound. Raman and THz spectroscopy of magnetic excitations confirm that the low-temperature antiferromagnetic ordered phase features a broad Raman continuum, together with two magnon-like excitations at 2.7 and 3.6 meV, respectively. The continuum strength is maximized as long-range order is suppressed by an external magnetic field. The state above the field-induced quantum phase transition around 7.5 T is characterized by a gapped multi-particle continuum out of which a two-particle bound state emerges, together with a well-defined single-particle excitation at lower energy. Exact diagonalization calculations demonstrate that Kitaev and off-diagonal exchange terms in the Fleury-Loudon operator are crucial for the occurrence of these features in the Raman spectra. Our study firmly establishes the partially-polarized quantum disordered character of the high-field phase.

Such type of spin order bears resemblance to molecular crystals, and we therefore may expect a prototypical spin wave spectrum which can be divided into low-energy external and high-energy internal cluster spin wave modes. Here, we study high-energy spin cluster excitations in the spin cluster Mott insulator Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$ by means of spontaneous Raman scattering. Multiple high-energy optical magnon modes are observed, of which the Raman-activity is shown to originate in the Elliot-Loudon scattering mechanism. Upon crossing the long-range ordering transition temperature the magnetic modes significantly broaden, corresponding to scattering from localized spin excitations within the spin clusters. Different optical phonon modes show a strong temperature dependence, evidencing a strong magnetoelectric coupling between optical phonons and the high-energy spin cluster excitations. Our results support the picture that Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$ can be regarded as a solid-state molecular crystal of spin nature.

In the quest for realizations of quantum spin liquids, the exploration of Kitaev materials - spin-orbit entangled Mott insulators with strong bond-directional exchanges - has taken center stage. However, in these materials the local spin-orbital j=1/2 moments typically show long-range magnetic order at low temperature, thus defying the formation of a spin-liquid ground state. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), we here report on a proximate spin liquid regime with clear fingerprints of Kitaev physics in the magnetic excitations of the honeycomb iridates alpha-Li2IrO3 and Na2IrO3. We observe a broad continuum of magnetic excitations that persists up to at least 300K, more than an order of magnitude larger than the magnetic ordering temperatures. We prove the magnetic character of this continuum by an analysis of the resonance behavior. RIXS measurements of the dynamical structure factor for energies within the continuum show that dynamical spin-spin correlations are restricted to nearest neighbors. Notably, these spectroscopic observations are also present in the magnetically ordered state for excitation energies above the conventional magnon excitations. Phenomenologically, our data agree with inelastic neutron scattering results on the related honeycomb compound RuCl3, establishing a common ground for a proximate Kitaev spin-liquid regime in these materials.

Young's archetypal double-slit experiment forms the basis for modern diffraction techniques: the elastic scattering of waves yields an interference pattern that captures the real-space structure. Here, we report on an inelastic incarnation of Young's experiment and demonstrate that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measures interference patterns which reveal the symmetry and character of electronic excited states in the same way as elastic scattering does for the ground state. A prototypical example is provided by the quasi-molecular electronic structure of insulating Ba3CeIr2O9 with structural Ir dimers and strong spin-orbit coupling. The double 'slits' in this resonant experiment are the highly localized core levels of the two Ir atoms within a dimer. The clear double-slit-type sinusoidal interference patterns that we observe allow us to characterize the electronic excitations, demonstrating the power of RIXS interferometry to unravel the electronic structure of solids containing, e.g., dimers, trimers, ladders, or other superstructures.

We establish the double perovskite Ba$_2$CeIrO$_6$ as a nearly ideal model system for j=1/2 moments, with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering indicating a deviation of less than 1% from the ideally cubic j=1/2 state. The local j=1/2 moments form an fcc lattice and are found to order antiferromagnetically at $T_N$=14K, more than an order of magnitude below the Curie-Weiss temperature. Model calculations show that the geometric frustration of the fcc Heisenberg antiferromagnet is further enhanced by a next-nearest neighbor exchange, indicated by ab initio theory. Magnetic order is driven by a bond-directional Kitaev exchange and by local distortions via a strong magneto-elastic effect - both effects are typically not expected for j=1/2 compounds making Ba2CeIrO6 a riveting example for the rich physics of spin-orbit entangled Mott insulators.

We have performed optical microscopy, micro-photoelectron spectroscopy, and micro-Raman scattering measurements on Y$_{0.63}$Ca$_{0.37}$TiO$_3$ single crystals in order to clarify the interplay between the microstructure and the temperature dependent electronic transport mechanisms in this material. Optical microscopy observations reveal dark and bright domain patterns on the surface with length scales of the order of several to a hundred micrometers showing a pronounced temperature dependent evolution. Spatially resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show the different electronic character of these domains. Using micro-Raman spectroscopy, we observe a distinct temperature dependence of the crystal structure of these domains. On the basis of these findings the different domains are assigned to insulating and metallic volume fractions, respectively. By decreasing the temperature, the volume fraction of the conducting domains increases, hence allowing the electrons to percolate through the sample at temperatures lower than $\sim$150 K.

It is a member of the solid-solution system Bi$_{2-x}$Sb$_x$Te$_{3-y}$Se$_y$, for which the local crystal structure, such as the occupation probabilities of each atomic site, is not well understood. We have investigated the temperature and polarization dependent spontaneous Raman scattering in BiSbTeSe$_2$, revealing a much higher number of lattice vibrational modes than predicted by group theoretical considerations for the space group R$\bar{3}$m corresponding to an ideally random solid-solution situation. The density functional calculations of phonon frequencies show a very good agreement with experimental data for parent material Bi$_2$Te$_3$, where no disorder effects were found. In comparison to Bi$_2$Te$_3$ the stacking disorder in BiSbTeSe$_2$, causes a discrepancy between theory and experiment. Combined analysis of experimental Raman spectra and DFT calculated phonon spectra for different types of atomic orders showed coexistence of different sequences of layers in the material and that those with Se in the center and a local order of Se-Bi-Se-Sb-Te, are the most favored.

We present a flexible and efficient ultrafast time-resolved spontaneous Raman spectroscopy setup to study collective excitation and quasi-particle dynamics in quantum matter. The setup has a broad energy tuning range extending from the visible to near infrared spectral regions for both the pump excitation and Raman probe pulses. Additionally, the balance between energy and time-resolution can be controlled. A high light collecting efficiency is realized by high numerical aperture collection optics and a high-throughput flexible spectrometer. We demonstrate the functionality of the setup with a study of the zone-center longitudinal optical phonon and hole continuum dynamics in silicon, and discuss the role of the Raman tensor in time-resolved Raman scattering. In addition, we show evidence for unequal phonon softening rates at different high symmetry points in the Brillouin zone of silicon by means of detecting pump-induced changes in the two-phonon overtone spectrum. Demagnetization dynamics in the helimagnet Cu2OSeO3 is studied by observing softening and broadening of a magnon after photo-excitation, underlining the unique power of measuring transient dynamics in the frequency domain, and the feasibility to study phase transitions in quantum matter.

Time-resolved spontaneous Raman spectroscopy serves as a probe for incoherent quasiparticle and collective excitation dynamics, and allows to distinguish symmetry changes across a photoinduced phase transition through the inelastic light scattering selection rules. Largely unexplored is the role of the Raman resonance enhancement in the time-domain, and the transient interaction between scattering from quasiparticles and collective excitations, with the latter interaction leading to a Fano interference.
In this work, we report on the observation of a phonon Raman tensor quench and Fano interference after strong photoexcitation of an intrinsic semiconductor. We observed a dynamic phonon scattering rate asymmetry and spectral asymmetry through simultaneous detection of both the anti-Stokes and Stokes response. The asymmetric phonon scattering rate is ascribed to the combined effect of the transient phonon population and the reduction of the phonon Raman tensor resulting from the photoexcited hole population. This same hole population results in a strong enhancement of the Fano spectral asymmetry.

We report on the linear optical properties of the chiral magnet Cu2OSeO3, specifically associated with the absence of inversion symmetry, the chiral crystallographic structure, and magnetic order. Through spectroscopic ellipsometry, we observe local crystal-field excitations below the charge-transfer gap. These crystal-field excitations are optically allowed due to the lack of inversion symmetry at the Cu sites. Optical polarization rotation measurements were used to study the structural chirality and magnetic order. The temperature dependence of the natural optical rotation, originating in the chiral crystal structure, provides evidence for a finite magneto-electric effect in the helimagnetic phase. We find a large magneto-optical susceptibility on the order of V(540nm)~10^4 rad/(T*m) in the helimagnetic phase and a maximum Faraday rotation of ~165deg/mm in the ferrimagnetic phase. The large value of V can be explained by considering spin cluster formation and the relative ease of domain reorientation in this metamagnetic material. The magneto-optical activity allows us to map the magnetic phase diagram, including the skyrmion lattice phase. In addition to this, we probe and discuss the nature of the various magnetic phase transitions in Cu2OSeO3.

Three-dimensional topological insulators harbour metallic surface states with exotic properties. In transport or optics, these properties are typically masked by defect-induced bulk carriers. Compensation of donors and acceptors reduces the carrier density, but the bulk resistivity remains disappointingly small. We show that measurements of the optical conductivity in BiSbTeSe$_2$ pinpoint the presence of electron-hole puddles in the bulk at low temperatures, which is essential for understanding DC bulk transport. The puddles arise from large fluctuations of the Coulomb potential of donors and acceptors, even in the case of full compensation. Surprisingly, the number of carriers appearing within puddles drops rapidly with increasing temperature and almost vanishes around 40 K. Monte Carlo simulations show that a highly non-linear screening effect arising from thermally activated carriers destroys the puddles at a temperature scale set by the Coulomb interaction between neighbouring dopants, explaining the experimental observation semi-quantitatively. This mechanism remains valid if donors and acceptors do not compensate perfectly.

We study the temperature dependence as well as anisotropy of optical conductivity ($σ_1$) in the pseudocubic single crystal Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{1.5}$MnO$_{4}$ using spectrocopic ellipsometry. Three transition temperatures are observed and can be linked to charge-orbital ($T_{\rm CO/OO}$ $\sim$ 320 K), two-dimensional-antiferromagnetic (2D-AFM) ($\sim$ 200 K), and three-dimensional AFM ($T_{\rm N} \sim$ 125 K) orderings. Below $T_{\rm CO/OO}$, $σ_1$ shows a charge ordering peak ($\sim$0.8 eV) with a significant blue shift as the temperature decreases. Calculations based on a model that incorporates a static Jahn-Teller distortion and assumes the existence of a local charge imbalance between two different sublattices support this assignment and explain the blue shift. This view is further supported by the partial spectral weight analysis showing the onset of optical anisotropy at $T_{\rm CO/OO}$ in the charge-ordering region ($0.5-2.5$ eV). Interestingly, in the charge-transfer region ($2.5-4$ eV), the spectral weight shows anomalies around the $T_{\rm 2D-AFM}$ that we attribute to the role of oxygen-$p$ orbitals in stabilizing the CE-type magnetic ordering. Our result shows the importance of spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom in this layered manganite.

We study the thermal transport of a spin-1/2 two leg antiferromagnetic ladder in the direction of legs. The possible effect of spin-orbit coupling and crystalline electric field are investigated in terms of anisotropies in the Heisenberg interactions on both leg and rung couplings. The original spin ladder is mapped to a bosonic model via a bond-operator transformation where an infinite hard-core repulsion is imposed to constrain one boson occupation per site. The Green's function approach is applied to obtain the energy spectrum of quasi-particle excitations responsible for thermal transport. The thermal conductivity is found to be monotonically decreasing with temperature due to increased scattering among triplet excitations at higher temperatures. A tiny dependence of thermal transport on the anisotropy in the leg direction at low temperatures is observed in contrast to the strong one on the anisotropy along the rung direction, due to the direct effect of the triplet density. Our results reach asymptotically the ballistic regime of the spin - 1/2 Heisenberg chain and compare favorably well with exact diagonalization data.
