We push the definition of multiple operator integrals (MOIs) into the realm of unbounded operators, using the pseudodifferential calculus from the works of Connes and Moscovici, Higson, and Guillemin. This in particular provides a natural language for operator integrals in noncommutative geometry. For this purpose, we develop a functional calculus for these pseudodifferential operators. To illustrate the power of this framework, we provide a pertubative expansion of the spectral action for regular $s$-summable spectral triples $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{H}, D)$, and an asymptotic expansion of $\mathrm{Tr}(P e^{-t(D+V)^2})$ as $t \downarrow 0$, where $P$ and $V$ belong to the algebra generated by $\mathcal{A}$ and $D$, and $V$ is bounded and self-adjoint.

We construct C*-dynamical systems for the dynamics of classical infinite particle systems describing harmonic oscillators interacting with arbitrarily many neighbors on lattices, as well on more general structures. Our approach allows particles with varying masses, varying frequencies, irregularly placed lattice sites and varying interactions subject to a simple summability constraint. A key role is played by the commutative resolvent algebra, which is a C*-algebra of bounded continuous functions on an infinite dimensional vector space, and in a strong sense the classical limit of the Buchholz--Grundling resolvent algebra, which suggests that quantum analogs of our results are likely to exist. For a general class of Hamiltonians, we show that the commutative resolvent algebra is time-stable, and admits a time-stable sub-algebra on which the dynamics is strongly continuous, therefore obtaining a C*-dynamical system.

It is shown that all compact operators can be approximated in norm by linear combinations of the basic resolvents (aQ + bP - i r)^{-1} for real constants a,b,r=/=0. This implies that the basic resolvents form a total set (norm dense span) in the C*-algebra R generated by the resolvents, termed resolvent algebra. So the basic resolvents share this property with the unitary Weyl operators, which span the Weyl algebra. These results obtain for finite systems of particles in any number of dimensions. The resolvent algebra of infinite systems (quantum fields), being the inductive limit of its finitely generated subalgebras, is likewise spanned by its basic resolvents.

The universal approximation theorem is generalised to uniform convergence on the (noncompact) input space $\mathbb{R}^n$. All continuous functions that vanish at infinity can be uniformly approximated by neural networks with one hidden layer, for all activation functions $\varphi$ that are continuous, nonpolynomial, and asymptotically polynomial at $\pm\infty$. When $\varphi$ is moreover bounded, we exactly determine which functions can be uniformly approximated by neural networks, with the following unexpected results. Let $\overline{\mathcal{N}_\varphi^l(\mathbb{R}^n)}$ denote the vector space of functions that are uniformly approximable by neural networks with $l$ hidden layers and $n$ inputs. For all $n$ and all $l\geq2$, $\overline{\mathcal{N}_\varphi^l(\mathbb{R}^n)}$ turns out to be an algebra under the pointwise product. If the left limit of $\varphi$ differs from its right limit (for instance, when $\varphi$ is sigmoidal) the algebra $\overline{\mathcal{N}_\varphi^l(\mathbb{R}^n)}$ ($l\geq2$) is independent of $\varphi$ and $l$, and equals the closed span of products of sigmoids composed with one-dimensional projections. If the left limit of $\varphi$ equals its right limit, $\overline{\mathcal{N}_\varphi^l(\mathbb{R}^n)}$ ($l\geq1$) equals the (real part of the) commutative resolvent algebra, a C*-algebra which is used in mathematical approaches to quantum theory. In the latter case, the algebra is independent of $l\geq1$, whereas in the former case $\overline{\mathcal{N}_\varphi^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}$ is strictly bigger than $\overline{\mathcal{N}_\varphi^1(\mathbb{R}^n)}$.

We explicitly compute the local invariants (heat kernel coefficients) of a conformally deformed non-commutative $d$-torus using multiple operator integrals. We derive a recursive formula that easily produces an explicit expression for the local invariants of any order $k$ and in any dimension $d$. Our recursive formula can conveniently produce all formulas related to the modular operator, which before were obtained in incremental steps for $d\in\{2,4\}$ and $k\in\{0,2,4\}$. We exemplify this by writing down some known ($k=2$, $d=2$) and some novel ($k=2$, $d\geq 3$) formulas in the modular operator.

The first part is based on [Skripka,vN - JST 2022], [van Suijlekom,vN - JNCG 2021], and [van Suijlekom,vN - JHEP 2022], and concerns the spectral action of noncommutative geometry and its perturbative expansions. We prove the existence of a higher-order spectral shift function under the relative Schatten class assumption, give a converging series expansion of the spectral action in terms of Chern--Simons and Yang--Mills forms, and show one-loop renormalizability of the spectral action in a generalized sense. The second part is based on [Stienstra,vN 2020] and [vN - LMP 2022] and concerns a non-perturbative approach to quantum gauge theory by means of Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory and strict quantization. We construct C*-algebras of U(1)^n-gauge observables on the lattice, show that they are conserved under the relevant time evolutions, construct continuum limit C*-algebras, and show that the result constitutes a strict deformation quantization.

Our result generalizes the result of \cite{PSS13} for Schatten-von Neumman perturbations $V$ and settles earlier attempts to encompass general perturbations with Schatten-von Neumman difference of resolvents, which led to more complicated trace formulas for more restrictive sets of functions $f$ and to analogs of spectral shift functions lacking real-valuedness and/or expected degree of uniqueness. Our proof builds on a general change of variables method derived in this paper and significantly refining those appearing in \cite{vNS21,PSS15,S17} with respect to several parameters at once.

In the odd orders, generalized Chern-Simons forms are integrated against an odd $(b,B)$-cocycle, whereas, in the even orders, powers of the curvature are integrated against $(b,B)$-cocycles that are Hochschild cocycles as well. In both cases, the Hochschild cochains are derived from the Taylor series expansion of the spectral action Tr$(f(D+V))$ in powers of $V=π_D(A)$, but unlike the Taylor expansion we expand in increasing order of the forms in $A$. We then analyze the perturbative quantization of the spectral action in noncommutative geometry and establish its one-loop renormalizability as a gauge theory. We show that the one-loop counterterms are of the same Chern-Simons-Yang-Mills form so that they can be safely subtracted from the spectral action. A crucial role will be played by the appropriate Ward identities, allowing for a fully spectral formulation of the quantum theory at one loop.

In this paper we discuss the prospects to take a picture of an extended neutrino source, i.e., resolving its angular neutrino luminosity distribution. This is challenging since neutrino directions cannot be directly measured but only estimated from the directions of charged particles they interact with in the detector material. This leads to an intrinsic blurring effect. We first discuss the problem in general terms and then apply our insights to solar neutrinos scattering elastically with electrons. Despite the aforementioned blurring we show how with high statistics and precision the original neutrino distributions could be reconstructed.

This paper shows how to construct classical and quantum field C*-algebras modeling a $U(1)^n$-gauge theory in any dimension using a novel approach to lattice gauge theory, while simultaneously constructing a strict deformation quantization between the respective field algebras. The construction starts with quantization maps defined on operator systems (instead of C*-algebras) associated to the lattices, in a way that quantization commutes with all lattice refinements, therefore giving rise to a quantization map on the continuum (meaning ultraviolet and infrared) limit. Although working with operator systems at the finite level, in the continuum limit we obtain genuine C*-algebras. We also prove that the C*-algebras (classical and quantum) are invariant under time evolutions related to the electric part of abelian Yang--Mills. Our classical and quantum systems at the finite level are essentially the ones of [van Nuland and Stienstra, 2020], which admit completely general dynamics, and we briefly discuss ways to extend this powerful result to the continuum limit. We also briefly discuss reduction, and how the current set-up should be generalized to the non-abelian case.

This extends [Connes--Chamseddine 2006], which computes only the scale-invariant part of the spectral action, works in dimension at most 4, and assumes the vanishing tadpole hypothesis. In our situation, we obtain a truly infinite odd $(b,B)$-cocycle. The analysis involved draws from recent results in multiple operator integration, which also allows us to give conditions under which this cocycle is entire, and under which our expansion is absolutely convergent. As a consequence of our expansion and of the gauge invariance of the spectral action, we show that the odd $(b,B)$-cocycle pairs trivially with $K_1$.

We introduce a novel commutative C*-algebra of functions on a symplectic vector space admitting a complex structure, along with a strict deformation quantization that maps a dense subalgebra to the resolvent algebra introduced by Buchholz and Grundling \cite{BG2008}. The associated quantization map is a field-theoretical Weyl quantization compatible with the work of Binz, Honegger and Rieckers \cite{BHR}. We also define a Berezin-type quantization map on the whole C*-algebra, which continuously and bijectively maps it onto the resolvent algebra.
This C*-algebra, generally defined on a real inner product space X, intimately depends on the finite dimensional subspaces of X. We thoroughly analyze the structure and applicability of this algebra in the finite dimensional case by giving a characterization of its elements and by computing its Gelfand spectrum.
