(Abridged) In this paper, we present a project of multi-channel wide-field optical sky monitoring system with high temporal resolution -- Small Aperture Imaging Network Telescope (SAINT) -- mostly built from off-the-shelf components and aimed towards searching and studying optical transient phenomena on the shortest time scales. The instrument consists of 12 channels each containing 30cm (F/1.5) objectives mounted on separate mounts with pointing speeds up to 50deg/s. Each channel is equipped with a 4128x4104 pixel, and a set of photometric $griz$ filters and linear polarizers. At the heart of every channel is a custom built reducer-collimator module allowing rapid switching of an effective focal length of the telescope -- due to it the system is capable to operate in either wide-field survey or narrow-field follow-up modes. In the first case, the field of view of the instrument is 470 square degrees and the detection limits (5$σ$ level at 5500$Å$) are 12.5-21 mag for exposure times of 20 ms - 20 min correspondingly.
In the second, follow-up regime, all telescopes are oriented towards the single target, and SAINT becomes an equivalent to a 1m telescope, with the field of view reduced to 11$'$ x 11$'$, and the exposure times decreased down to 0.6 ms. Different channels may then have different filters installed, thus allowing a detailed study -- acquiring both color and polarization information -- of a target object with highest possible temporal resolution.
The operation of SAINT will allow acquiring an unprecedented amount of data on various classes of astrophysical phenomena, from near-Earth to extragalactic ones, while its multi-channel design and the use of commercially available components allows easy expansion of its scale, and thus performance and detection capabilities.

In this paper, the first in a series of four articles, the scientific goals of the Metron project are highlighted, and the characteristics of the cosmic objects available for study within its framework are provided. The Metron interferometer radio telescope should include arrays of meter-range dipole antennas placed on Earth, in outer space or on the far side of the Moon (or a combination of these options). Working in the meter range will enable the study of the so-called cosmological epoch of ``Dark Ages'', which is challenging to observe but highly interesting for understanding the origin of the first stars, galaxies, and black holes, as well as for the search for new cosmological objects and processes. One possibility is to search for absorption in the 21 cm line within extended halos around early protogalaxies and supermassive primordial black holes, whose existence is predicted in a number of models. Another goal of Metron may be to clarify the anomalous absorption in the 21 cm line previously detected by the EDGES telescopes and to observe radio emissions from stars' and exoplanets' magnetospheres. The Metron project aims to achieve unprecedented resolution for the meter range, which is expected to yield new world-class scientific results. Meter-range antennas and receivers are relatively simple and inexpensive, and the construction of interferometric arrays from them can be accomplished in a relatively short period of time.

We report an independent Doppler confirmation of the TESS planet candidate orbiting an F-type main sequence star TOI-1408 located 140 pc away. We present a set of radial velocities obtained with a high-resolution fiber-optic spectrograph FFOREST mounted at the SAO RAS 6-m telescope (BTA-6). Our self-consistent analysis of these Doppler data and TESS photometry suggests a grazing transit such that the planet obscures its host star by only a portion of the visible disc. Because of this degeneracy, the radius of TOI-1408.01 appears ill-determined with lower limit about $\sim$1 R$_{\rm Jup}$, significantly larger than in the current TESS solution. We also derive the planet mass of $1.69\pm0.20$~$M_{\rm Jup}$ and the orbital period $\sim4.425$ days, thus making this object a typical hot Jupiter, but with a significant orbital eccentricity of $0.259\pm0.026$. Our solution may suggest the planet is likely to experience a high tidal eccentricity migration at the stage of intense orbital rounding, or may indicate possible presence of other unseen companions in the system, yet to be detected.

We estimated the candidate radii (all are greater than 1.4 times the Jovian radius), semi-major axes of their orbits ($0.012-0.035 AU$), and other orbital parameters by modelling. We report the light curves with transits for two stars obtained in 2022 based on individual observations.

We propose a design of an adaptive optics (AO) system for the high-resolution fiber-fed echelle spectrograph installed at the Nasmyth focus of the 6-m BTA telescope at the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). The system will be based on a pyramid wavefront sensor and benefit from the experience of the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille team in the field of adaptive optics. The AO will operate in the visible domain of 430-680 nm, in an f\30 input beam and provide correction for the on-axis source only. The main challenges in this particular design are insetting inserting the AO into an existing optical system and maintaining the focal and pupil planes configuration, fitting within the instrument's flux budget as well as limitations on the total cost of the AO bench. According to the current design, the AO bench will use an additional relay consisting of 2 spherical mirrors to re-collimate the beam and project the pupil onto a small deformable mirror. A dichroic splitter will be used to longwave component to the pyramid wavefront sensor branch based on refractive optics only. Using off-the-shelf components only we can reach the instrumental wavefront error of 0.016 waves PTV with a 20 nm bandpass filter at 700 nm. Using folding mirrors and refocusing of the fiber's microlens we restore the nominal geometry of the beam feeding the spectrograph. The final goal for the AO system is to increase the energy concentration in spot at the spectrograph's entrance, and our preliminary modelling shows that we can gain by factor of 69.5 with the typical atmospheric conditions at SAO RAS.

We developed a dedicated statistical test for a massive detection of spot- and facula-crossing anomalies in multiple exoplanetary transit lightcurves, based on the frequentist $p$-value thresholding. This test was used to augment our algorithmic pipeline for transit lightcurves analysis. It was applied to $1598$ amateur and professional transit observations of $26$ targets being monitored in the EXPANSION project. We detected $109$ statistically significant candidate events revealing a roughly $2:1$ asymmetry in favor of spots-crossings over faculae-crossings. Although some candidate anomalies likely appear non-physical and originate from systematic errors, such asymmetry between negative and positive events should indicate a physical difference between the frequency of star spots and faculae. Detected spot-crossing events also reveal positive correlation between their amplitude and width, possibly owed to spot size correlation. However, the frequency of all detectable crossing events appears just about a few per cent, so they cannot explain excessive transit timing noise observed for several targets.

We analyzed 62 lines of sight where the stellar contamination by Mg{\sc ii} was corrected or found negligible for DIB 9633. Equivalent widths of DIB 9577 were measured in 62 lines of sight. Poor mutual correlation between the strengths of the above features and the major diffuse bands (5780 and 5797) as well as with other DIBs (with some exceptions) were revealed. The considered DIBs are also poorly correlated with the features of neutral hydrogen, molecular carbon, and those of simple interstellar radicals. Perhaps this phenomenon can be explained if the diffuse band 9577 is an unresolved blend of two or more interstellar features. There are indications that 9633 and 9577 diffuse bands are stronger in $σ$-type clouds, i.e. these features resemble the behavior of reasonably broad DIBs, which are strong in the lines of sight where the UV flux from the very hot nearby stars plays an important role.

The brown dwarf transits a moderately bright ($V$ = 12.3 mag) fast-rotating F-type star with a projected rotational velocity $v\sin{ i_*}=40\pm10$ km/s. We use the isochrone placement algorithm to characterize the host star, which has effective temperature $7000\pm200$ K, mass $1.68\pm0.10$ $M_{\mathrm{Sun}}$, radius $1.56\pm0.10$ $R_{\mathrm{Sun}}$ and approximate age $0.27_{-0.15}^{+0.09}$ Gyr. GPX-1 b has an orbital period of $\sim$1.75 d, and a transit depth of $0.90\pm0.03$ %. We describe the GPX transit detection observations, subsequent photometric and speckle-interferometric follow-up observations, and SOPHIE spectroscopic measurements, which allowed us to establish the presence of a sub-stellar object around the host star. GPX-1 was observed at 30-min integrations by TESS in Sector 18, but the data is affected by blending with a 3.4 mag brighter star 42 arcsec away. GPX-1 b is one of about two dozen transiting brown dwarfs known to date, with a mass close to the theoretical brown dwarf/gas giant planet mass transition boundary. Since GPX-1 is a moderately bright and fast-rotating star, it can be followed-up by the means of Doppler tomography.

The determination of fundamental parameters of stars is one of the main tasks of astrophysics. For magnetic chemically peculiar stars, this problem is complicated by the anomalous chemical composition of their atmospheres, which requires special analysis methods. We present the results of the effective temperature, surface gravity, abundance and radius determinations for three CP stars HD 188041, HD 111133, and HD 204411. Our analysis is based on a self-consistent model fitting of high-resolution spectra and spectrophrotometric observations over a wide wavelength range, taking into account the anomalous chemical composition of atmospheres and the inhomogeneous vertical distribution for three chemical elements: Ca, Cr, and Fe. For two stars, HD 188041 and HD 204411, we also performed interferometric observations which provided us with the direct estimates of stellar radii. Parameters for another 8 CP stars are collected. Comparison of the radii determined from the analysis of spectroscopic/spectrophotometric observations with direct measurements of the radii by interferometry methods for seven CP stars shows that the radii agree within the limits of measurement errors, which proves indirect spectroscopic analysis capable of proving reliable determinations of the fundamental parameters of fainter Ap stars that are not possible to study with modern interferometric facilities.

HD 219134 hosts several planets, with seven candidates reported, and the two shortest period planets are rocky (4-5 $M_{\oplus}$) and transit the star. Here we present contemporaneous multi-wavelength observations of the star HD 219134. We observed HD 219134 with the Narval spectropolarimeter at the Observatoire du Pic du Midi, and used Zeeman Doppler Imaging to characterise its large-scale stellar magnetic field. We found a weak poloidal magnetic field with an average unsigned strength of 2.5 G. From these data we confidently confirm the rotation period of 42 days, measure a stellar inclination of 77$\pm$8 degrees, and find evidence for differential rotation. The projected obliquity of the two transiting super-Earths is therefore between 0 and 20 degrees. We employed HST STIS observations of the Ly$α$ line to derive a stellar wind mass-loss rate of half the solar value ($10^{-14} M_{\odot} {\rm yr}^{-1}$). We further collected photometric transit observations of the closest planet at near-UV wavelengths centred on the Mg II h&k lines with AstroSat. We found no detectable absorption, setting an upper limit on the transit depth of about 3%, which rules out the presence of a giant magnesium cloud larger than 9 planet radii. Finally, we estimated the high-energy flux distribution of HD 219134 as seen by planets b and c. These results present a detailed contemporaneous characterisation of HD 219134, and provide the ingredients necessary for accurately modelling the high-energy stellar flux, the stellar wind, and their impact on the two shortest-period planets, which will be presented in the second paper of this series.

We present a 3D study of the formation of refractory-rich exospheres around the rocky planets HD219134b and c. These exospheres are formed by surface particles that have been sputtered by the wind of the host star. The stellar wind properties are derived from magnetohydrodynamic simulations, which are driven by observationally-derived stellar magnetic field maps, and constrained by Ly-alpha observations of wind mass-loss rates, making this one of the most well constrained model of winds of low-mass stars. The proximity of the planets to their host star implies a high flux of incident stellar wind particles, thus the sputtering process is sufficiently effective to build up relatively dense, refractory-rich exospheres. The sputtering releases refractory elements from the entire dayside surfaces of the planets, with elements such as O and Mg creating an extended neutral exosphere with densities larger than 10/cm3, extending to several planetary radii. For planet b, the column density of OI along the line of sight reaches 10^{13}/cm2, with the highest values found ahead of its orbital motion. This asymmetry would create asymmetric transit profiles. To assess its observability, we use a ray tracing technique to compute the expected transit depth of the OI exosphere of planet b. We find that the transit depth in the OI 1302.2A line is 0.042%, which is a small increase relative to the continuum transit (0.036%). This implies that the sputtered exosphere of HD219134b is unlikely to be detectable with our current UV instruments.

We present the results of an experimental study of an advanced moderate-resolution spectrograph based on a cascade of narrow-band holographic gratings. The main goal of the project is to achieve a moderately high spectral resolutionwith R up to 5000 simultaneously in the 4300-6800 A visible spectral range on a single standard CCD, together with an increased throughput. The experimental study consisted of (1) resolution and image quality tests performed using the solar spectrum; and (2) a total throughput test performed for a number of wavelengths using a calibrated lab monochromator. The measured spectral resolving power reaches values over R>4000 while the experimental throughput is as high as 55%, which is in good agreement with the modeling results. Comparing the obtained characteristics of the spectrograph under consideration with the best existing spectrographs, we conclude that the used concept can be considered a very competitive and cheap alternative to the existing spectrographs of the given class. We propose several astrophysical applications for the instrument and discuss the prospect of creating its full-scale version.

We present high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the spectroscopic binary Chi Dra. Spectral lines in the spectrum of the main component Chi Dra A show variable Zeeman displacement, which confrms earlier suggestions about the presence of a weak magnetic field on the surface of this star. Within about 2 years of time base of our observations, the longitudinal component BL of the magnetic field exhibits variation from -11.5 +/- 2.5 G to +11.1 +/- 2.1 G with a period of about 23 days. Considering the rotational velocity of Chi DraA in the literature and that newly measured in this work, this variability may be explained by the stellar rotation under the assumption that the magnetic field is globally stable. Our new measurements of the radial velocities (RV) in high-resolution I-spectra of Chi Dra A refined the orbital parameters and reveal persistent deviations of RVs from the orbital curve. We suspect that these deviations may be due to the in uence of local magnetically generated spots, pulsations, or a Jupiter-size planet orbiting the system.

Magnetic fields are detected in a few percent of white dwarfs. The number of such magnetic white dwarfs known is now some hundreds. Fields range in strength from a few kG to several hundred MG. Almost all the known magnetic white dwarfs have a mean field modulus >= 1 MG. We are trying to fill a major gap in observational knowledge at the low field limit (<= 200 kG) using circular spectro-polarimetry.
In this paper we report the discovery and monitoring of strong, periodic magnetic variability in two previously discovered "super-weak field" magnetic white dwarfs, WD2047+372 and WD2359-434. WD2047+372 has a mean longitudinal field that reverses between about -12 and +15 kG, with a period of 0.243 d, while its mean field modulus appears nearly constant at 60 kG. The observations can be intepreted in terms of a dipolar field tilted with respect to the stellar rotation axis. WD2359-434 always shows a weak positive longitudinal field with values between about 0 and +12 kG, varying only weakly with stellar rotation, while the mean field modulus varies between about 50 and 100 kG. The rotation period is found to be 0.112 d using the variable shape of the Halpha line core, consistent with available photometry. The field of this star appears to be much more complex than a dipole, and is probably not axisymmetric.
Available photometry shows that WD2359-434 is a light variable with an amplitude of only 0.005 mag, our own photometry shows that if WD2047+372 is photometrically variable, the amplitude is below about 0.01 mag.
These are the first models for magnetic white dwarfs with fields below about 100 kG based on magnetic measurements through the full stellar rotation. They reveal two very different magnetic surface configurations, and that, contrary to simple ohmic decay theory, WD2359-434 has a much more complex surface field than the much younger WD2047+372.

We review the measurements of magnetic fields of OBA stars. Based on these data we confirm that magnetic fields are distributed according to a lognormal law with a mean log(B)=-0.5 (B in kG) with a standard deviation sigma=0.5. The shape of the magnetic field distribution is similar to that for neutron stars. This finding is in favor of the hypothesis that the magnetic field of a neutron star is determined mainly by the magnetic field of its predecessor, the massive OB star. Further, we model the evolution of an ensemble of magnetic massive stars in the Galaxy. We use our own population synthesis code to obtain the distribution of stellar radii, ages, masses, temperatures, effective magnetic fields and magnetic fluxes from the pre-main sequence (PMS) via zero age main sequence (ZAMS) up to the terminal age main sequence (TAMS) stages. A comparison of the obtained in our model magnetic field distribution (MFD) with that obtained from the recent measurements of the stellar magnetic field allows us to conclude that the evolution of magnetic fields of massive stars is slow if not absent. The shape of the real MFD shows no indications of the magnetic desert proposed previously. Based on this finding we argue that the observed fraction of magnetic stars is determined by physical conditions at the PMS stage of stellar evolution.

In the present work we discuss a possibility to build an instrument with two operation modes - spectral and imaging ones. The key element of such instrument is a dispersive and filtering unit consisting of two narrowband volume-phase holographic gratings. Each of them provides high diffraction efficiency in a relatively narrow spectral range of a few tens of nanometers. Besides, the position of this working band is highly dependent on the angle of incidence. So we propose to use a couple of such gratings to implement the two operational modes. The gratings are mounted in a collimated beam one after another. In the spectroscopic mode the gratings are turned on such angle that the diffraction efficiency curves coincide, thus the beams diffracted on the first grating are diffracted twice on the second one and a high-dispersion spectrum in a narrow range is formed. If the collimating and camera lenses are corrected for a wide field it is possible to use a long slit and register the spectra from its different points separately. In the imaging mode the gratings are turned to such angle that the efficiency curves intersect in a very narrow wavelength range. So the beams diffracted on the first grating are filtered out by the second one except of the spectral component, which forms the image. In this case the instrument works without slit diaphragm on the entrance. We provide an example design to illustrate the proposed concept. This optical scheme works in the region around 656 nm with F/# of 6.3. In the spectroscopic mode it provides a spectrum for the region from 641 to 671 nm with reciprocal linear dispersion of 1.4 nm/mm and the spectral resolving power higher than 14000. In the imaging mode it covers linear 12mm x 12mm field of view with spatial resolution of 15-30 lines/mm.

We describe a dispersive unit consisting of cascaded volume-phase holographic gratings for spectroscopic applications. Each of the gratings provides high diffractive efficiency in a relatively narrow wavelength range and transmits the rest of the radiation to the 0th order of diffraction. The spectral lines formed by different gratings are centered in the longitudal direction and separated in the transverse direction due to tilt of the gratings around two axes. We consider a technique of design and optimization of such a scheme. It allows to define modulation of index of refraction and thickness of the holographic layer for each of the gratings as well as their fringes frequencies and inclination angles. At the first stage the gratings parameters are found approximately using analytical expressions of Kogelnik's coupled wave theory. Then each of the grating starting from the longwave sub-range is optimized separately by using of numerical optimization procedure and rigorous coupled wave analysis to achieve a high diffraction efficiency profile with a steep shortwave edge. In parallel such targets as ray aiming and linear dispersion maintenance are controlled by means of ray tracing. We demonstrate this technique on example of a small-sized spectrograph for astronomical applications. It works in the range of 500-650 nm and uses three gratings covering 50 nm each. It has spectral resolution of 6130 - 12548. Obtaining of the asymmetrical efficiency curve is shown with use of dichromated gelatin and a photopolymer. Change of the curve shape allows to increase filling coefficient for the target sub-range up to 2.3 times.

In the present article we consider an accurate modeling of spectrograph with cascade of volume-phase holographic gratings. The proposed optical scheme allows to detect spectra in an extended wavelength range without gaps providing relatively high spectral resolution and high throughput. However, modeling and minimization of possible cross-talks between gratings and stray light in such a scheme represents a separate task. We use analytical equations of coupled wave theory together with rigorous coupled wave analysis to optimize the gratings parameters and further apply the latter together with non-sequential raytracing algorithm to model propagation of beams through the spectrograph. The results show relatively high throughput up to 53% and absence of any significant cross-talks or ghost images even for ordinary holograms recorded on dichromated gelatin.

The laboratory gas phase spectrum recently published by Campbell et al. has reinvigorated attempts to confirm the presence of the C$_{60}^+$ cation in the interstellar medium, thorough an analysis of the spectra of hot, reddened stars. This search is hindered by at least two issues that need to be addressed: (i) the wavelength range of interest is severely polluted by strong water- vapour lines coming from the Earth's atmosphere; (ii) one of the major bands attributed to C$_{60}^+$, at 9633 Å, is blended with the stellar Mg{\sc ii} line, which is susceptible to non-local-thermodynamic equilibrium effects in hot stellar atmospheres. Both these issues are here carefully considered here for the first time, based on high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio echellé spectra for 19 lines of sight. The result is that the presence of C$_{60}^+$ in interstellar clouds is brought into question.

We are searching for new examples of magnetic white dwarfs with very weak fields, and trying to model the few known examples. Our search is intended to be sensitive enough to detect fields at the few kG level.
We have been surveying bright white dwarfs for very weak fields using spectropolarimeters at the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope, the William Herschel telescope, the European Southern Observatory, and the Russian Special Astrophysical Observatory. We discuss in some detail tests of the WHT spectropolarimeter ISIS using the known magnetic strong-field Ap star HD 215441 (Babcock's star) and the long-period Ap star HD 201601 (gamma Equ).
We report the discovery of a field with a mean field modulus of about 57 kG in the white dwarf LTT 16093 = WD2047+372. The field is clearly detected through the Zeeman splitting of Halpha seen in two separate circularly polarised spectra from two different spectropolarimeters. Zeeman circular polarisation is also detected, but only barely above the 3 sigma level.
The discovery of this field is significant because it is the third weakest field ever unambiguously discovered in a white dwarf, while still being large enough that we should be able to model the field structure in some detail with future observations.

Searches for magnetic fields in white dwarfs have clarified both the frequency of occurrence and the global structure of the fields found down to field strengths of the order of 500 kG. Below this level, the situation is still very unclear. We are studying the weakest fields found in white dwarfs to determine the frequency of such fields and their structure. We describe a very sensitive new method of measuring such fields in DA (H-rich) white dwarfs, and search for a field in the brightest such star, 40 Eri B. Our new method makes use of the strongly enhanced polarisation signal in the sharp core of Halpha. We find that with one-hour integrations with the high-resolution spectropolarimeter ESPaDOnS on the 3.6-m CFHT, we can reach a standard error fo the longitudinal field of about 85 G, the smallest error ever achieved for any white dwarf. Nevertheless, we do not detect a magnetic field in this star. Observations with ISIS at the WHT, and the Main Stellar Spectrograph at the SAO, support the absence of a field at somewhat lower precision. The new method is very efficient; it is shown that for suitable DA stars the integration time, with ESPaDOnS on a 3.6-m telescope, to reach a 500 G standard error on a white dwarf of V = 12.5, is about half an hour, about the same as the time required on an ESO 8-m telescope with FORS using conventional low-resolution spectropolarimetry.

We present the first morpho-kinematical analysis of the planetary nebulae Kn 61 and Pa 5 and explore the nature of their central stars. Our analysis is based on high resolution and medium resolution spectroscopic observations, deep narrow-band imaging, and integral photometry. This material allows us to identify the morphological components and study their kinematics. The direct images and spectra indicate an absence of the characteristic [N II] and [S II] emission lines in both nebulae. The nebular spectrum of Kn 61 suggests an hydrogen deficient planetary nebula and the stellar spectrum of the central star reveals a hydrogen deficient PG 1159-type star. The [O III] position velocity diagram reveals that Kn 61 is a closed, empty, spherical shell with a thin border and a filamentary surface expanding at 67.6 km s$^{-1}$, and the shell is currently not expanding isotropically. We derived a kinematic age of $\sim$ 1.6$\times$10$^4$ yrs for an assumed distance of 4 kpc. A photometric period of $\sim$ 5.7($\pm$0.4) days has been detected for Kn 61, indicating presence of a possible binary system at its core. A possible link between filamentary, spherical shells and PG 1159-type stars is noted.
The morphology of Pa 5 is dominated by an equatorial toroid and faint polar extensions. The equatorial region of this planetary nebula is expanding at 45.2 kms$^{-1}$. The stellar spectrum corresponds to a very hot star and is dominated by a steep blue rising continuum and He II, Balmer and Ca II photospheric lines.

The purpose of the survey is to search for low-amplitude and long-period RV variations in giants and examine the origin of the variations using the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph installed at the 1.8-m telescope of Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory in Korea. We present high-accuracy RV measurements of sigma Per made from December 2003 to January 2014. We argue that the RV variations are not related to the surface inhomogeneities but instead a Keplerian motion of the planetary companion is the most likely explanation. Assuming a stellar mass of 2.25 +/- 0.5 M_Sun, we obtain a minimum planetary companion mass of 6.5 +/- 1.0 M_Jup, with an orbital semi-major axis of 1.8 +/- 0.1 AU, and an eccentricity of 0.3 +/- 0.1 around sigma Per.

We conducted a multi-wavelength study to unveil the properties of the extremely long-period cataclysmic variable V479 And. We performed series of observations, including moderate to high spectral resolution optical spectrophotometry, X-ray observations with Swift, linear polarimetry and near-IR photometry. This binary system is a low-inclination ~ 17^o system with a 0.594093(4) day orbital period. The absorption line complex in the spectra indicate a G8--K0 spectral type for the donor star, which has departed from the zero-age main sequence. This implies a distance to the object of about 4 kpc. The primary is probably a massive 1.1-1.4 Msun magnetic white dwarf, accreting matter at a rate M(dot) > 10^-10 Msun/ yr. This rate can be achieved if the donor star fills its corresponding Roche lobe, but there is little observational evidence for a mass-transfer stream in this system. An alternative explanation is a stellar wind from the donor star, although such a high rate mass loss is not anticipated from a subgiant. If the strongly magnetic white dwarf in V479 And. is confirmed by future observations, the system the polar with the longest observed orbital period. We also discuss the evolutionary state of V479 And.

It is not known whether the remaining white dwarfs are not magnetic, or if they have a magnetic field too weak to be detected with the techniques adopted in the large surveys. Aims. We describe the results of the first survey specifically devised to clarify the detection frequency of kG-level magnetic fields in cool DA white dwarfs. Methods: Using the FORS1 instrument of the ESO VLT, we have obtained Balmer line circular spectropolarimetric measurements of a small sample of cool (DA6 - DA8) white dwarfs. Using FORS and UVES archive data, we have also revised numerous white dwarf field measurements previously published in the literature. Results: We have discovered an apparently constant longitudinal magnetic field of \sim9.5 kG in the DA6 white dwarf WD2105-820. This star is the first weak-field white dwarf that has been observed sufficiently to roughly determine the characteristics of its field. The available data are consistent with a simple dipolar morphology with magnetic axis nearly parallel to the rotation axis, and a polar strength of \simeq 56 kG. Our re-evaluation of the FORS archive data for white dwarfs indicates that longitudinal magnetic fields weaker than 10 kG had previously been correctly identified in at least three white dwarfs. Conclusions: We find that the probability of detecting a field of kG strength in a DA white dwarf is of the order of 10% for each of the cool and hot DA stars. If there is a lower cutoff to field strength in white dwarfs, or a field below which all white dwarfs are magnetic, the current precision of measurements is not yet sufficient to reveal it.

We present and interpret simultaneous new photometric and spectroscopic observations of the peculiar magnetic white dwarf WD1953-011. The flux in the V-band filter and intensity of the Balmer spectral lines demonstrate variability with the rotation period of about 1.45 days. According to previous studies, this variability can be explained by the presence of a dark spot having a magnetic nature, analogous to a sunspot. Motivated by this idea, we examine possible physical relationships between the suggested dark spot and the strong-field magnetic structure (magnetic "spot", or "tube") recently identified on the surface of this star. Comparing the rotationally-modulated flux with the variable spectral observables related to the magnetic "spot" we establish their correlation, and therefore their physical relationship. Modeling the variable photometric flux assuming that it is associated with temperature variations in the stellar photosphere, we argue that the strong-field area and dark, low-temperature spot are comparable in size and located at the same latitudes, essentially overlap** each other with a possible slight longitudinal shift. In this paper we also present a new, improved value of the star's rotational period and constrain the characteristics of the thermal inhomogeneity over the degenerate's surface.

Based on an analysis of the catalog of magnetic fields, we have investigated the statistical properties of the mean magnetic fields for OB stars. We show that the mean effective magnetic field ${\cal B}$ of a star can be used as a statistically significant characteristic of its magnetic field. No correlation has been found between the mean magnetic field strength ${\cal B}$ and projected rotational velocity of OB stars, which is consistent with the hypothesis about a fossil origin of the magnetic field. We have constructed the magnetic field distribution function for B stars, $F({\cal B})$, that has a power-law dependence on ${\cal B}$ with an exponent of $\approx -1.82$. We have found a sharp decrease in the function $F({\cal B})$F for ${\cal B}\lem 400 G$ that may be related to rapid dissipation of weak stellar surface magnetic fields.

Methods: We selected about 55 early K giant (K0 - K4) stars brighter than fifth magnitude that were observed using BOES, a high resolution spectrograph attached to the 1.8 m telescope at BOAO (Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory). BOES is equipped with $I_2$ absorption cell for high precision RV measurements.
Results: We detected a periodic radial velocity variations in the K0 III star \gam1leo with a period of P = 429 days. An orbital fit of the observed RVs yields a period of P = 429 days, a semi-amplitude of K = 208 \mps, and an eccentricity of e = 0.14. To investigate the nature of the RV variations, we analyzed the photometric, CaII $λ$ 8662 equivalent width, and line-bisector variations of \gam1leo. We conclude that the detected RV variations can be best explained by a planetary companion with an estimated mass of m $\sin i = 8.78 M_{Jupiter}$ and a semi-major axis of $a = 1.19$ AU, assuming a stellar mass of 1.23 \Msun.

The presence of electric currents in the atmospheres of magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars could bring important theoretical constrains about the nature and evolution of magnetic field in these stars. The Lorentz force, which results from the interaction between the magnetic field and the induced currents, modifies the atmospheric structure and induces characteristic rotational variability of pressure-sensitive spectroscopic features, that can be analysed using phase-resolved spectroscopic observations. In this work we continue the presentation of results of the magnetic pressure studies in mCP stars focusing on the high-resolution spectroscopic observations of Bp star 56Ari. We have detected a significant variability of the Halpha, Hbeta, and Hgamma spectral lines during full rotation cycle of the star. Then these observations are interpreted in the framework of the model atmosphere analysis, which accounts for the Lorentz force effects. We used the LLmodels stellar model atmosphere code for the calculation of the magnetic pressure effects in the atmosphere of 56Ari taking into account realistic chemistry of the star and accurate computations of the microscopic plasma properties. The Synth3 code was employed to simulate phase-resolved variability of Balmer lines. We demonstrate that the model with the outward-directed Lorentz force in the dipole+quadrupole configuration is likely to reproduce the observed hydrogen lines variation. These results present strong evidences for the presence of non-zero global electric currents in the atmosphere of this early-type magnetic star.

We present and interpret new spectropolarimetric observations of the magnetic white dwarf WD 1953-011. Circular polarization and intensity spectra of the H$α$ spectral line demonstrate the presence of two-component magnetic field in the photosphere of this star. The geometry consists of a weak, large scale component, and a strong, localized component. Analyzing the rotationally modulated low-field component, we establish a rotation period $P_{rot} = 1.4480 \pm 0.0001$ days. Modeling the measured magnetic observables, we find that the low-field component can be described by the superposition of a dipole and quadrupole. According to the best-fit model, the inclination of the stellar rotation axis with respect to the line of sight is $i \approx 20^\circ$, and the angle between the rotation axis and the dipolar axis is $β\approx 10^\circ$. The dipole strength at the pole is about 180 kG, and the quadrupolar strength is about 230 kG. These data suggest a fossil origin of the low-field component. In contrast, the strong-field component exhibits a peculiar, localized structure (``magnetic spot'') that confirms the conclusions of Maxted and co-workers. The mean field modulus of the spot ($|B_{spot}| = 520 \pm 7$ kG) together with its variable longitudinal magnetic field having a maximum of about +400 kG make it difficult to describe it naturally as a high-order component of the star's global poloidal field. Instead, we suggest that the observed strong-field region has a geometry similar to a magnetic flux tube.

We have observed a new cataclysmic variable (CV) SDSS J080434.20+510349.2 and study the origin of a long-term variability found in its light curve. Multi-longitude time-resolved photometric observations were carried out to analyze the uncommon behavior also found recently in two newly discovered CVs. This study of SDSS J080434.20+510349.2 mainly concerns the understanding of the nature of the observed double-humped light curve and its relation to a cyclic brightening occurring during quiescence. The observations were obtained early in 2007, when the object was at about V~17.1, 0.4 mag brighter than the pre-outburst magnitude. The light curve shows a sinusoidal variability with an amplitude of about 0.07 mag and a periodicity of 42.48 min, which is half of the orbital period of the system. In addition, we have observed two "mini-outbursts" of the system up to 0.6 mag, with a duration of about 4 days each. The "mini-outburst" had a symmetric profile and repeated in about 32 days. Subsequent monitoring of the system shows a cyclical behaviour of such "mini-outbursts" with a similar recurrence period. The origin of the double-humped light curve and the periodic brightening is discussed in the light of the evolutionary state of SDSS J080434.20+510349.2.

Several dynamical processes may induce considerable electric currents in the atmospheres of magnetic chemically peculiar (CP) stars. The Lorentz force, which results from the interaction between the magnetic field and the induced currents, modifies the atmospheric structure and induces characteristic rotational variability of the hydrogen Balmer lines. To study this phenomena we have initiated a systematic spectroscopic survey of the Balmer lines variation in magnetic CP stars. In this paper we continue presentation of results of the program focusing on the high-resolution spectral observations of A0p star \aur (HD 40312). We have detected a significant variability of the H$α$, H$β$, and H$γ$ spectral lines during full rotation cycle of the star. This variability is interpreted in the framework of the model atmosphere analysis, which accounts for the Lorentz force effects. Both the inward and outward directed Lorentz forces are considered under the assumption of the axisymmetric dipole or dipole+quadrupole magnetic field configurations. We demonstrate that only the model with the outward directed Lorentz force in the dipole+quadrupole configuration is able to reproduce the observed hydrogen line variation. These results present new strong evidences for the presence of non-zero global electric currents in the atmosphere of an early-type magnetic star.

We detected variability in the HeII$ λ4686$, HeI$ λ$4713 and H$β$ absorption and the CIII$ λ$5696 emission line profiles. The amplitude of the variability is $\approx$(0.5--1)% of the continuum intensity. The dynamical wavelet spectrum of the profile variations reveals large-scale components in the interval 25--50 km/s that move within the -$V\sin i$ to $V\sin i$ band for the primary star of the system, Aa$^1$, with a band crossing time of 4$^h$--5$^h$. However, some of the variable features go outside the band, presumably due to either imhomogeneities in the stellar wind from $δ$Ori Aa$^1$ or non-radial pulsations of the weaker components of the system, Aa$^2$ or Ab. The detected variability may by cyclic with a period of $\approx 4^h$ . We suggest that it is associated with non-radial pulsations of the primary in the sector mode $(l, m)=(2,-2)$.

The abundance anomalies in chemically peculiar B-F stars are usually explained by diffusion of chemical elements in the stable atmospheres of these stars. But it is well known that Cp stars with similar temperatures and gravities show very different chemical compositions. We show that the abundance patterns of several stars can be influenced by accretion and (or) nuclear reactions in stellar atmospheres. We report the result of determination of abundances of elements in the atmosphere of hot Am star: Sirius A and show that Sirius A was contaminated by s-process enriched matter from Sirius B (now a white dwarf). The second case is Przybylski's star. The abundance pattern of this star is the second most studied one after the Sun with the abundances determined for about 60 chemical elements. Spectral lines of radioactive elements with short decay times were found in the spectrum of this star. We report the results of investigation on the stratification of chemical elements in the atmosphere of Przybylski's star and the new identification of lines corresponding to short lived actinides in its spectrum. Possible explanations of the abundances pattern of Przybylski's star (as well as HR465 and HD965) can be the natural radioactive decay of thorium, and uranium, the explosion of a companion as a Supernova or nucleosynthesis events at stellar surface.

While these values are near the detection limit of our apparatus, we belive that they are real. In any case one can conclude from our data that $B_{\|}$ of T Tau does not significantly exceed 200 G, which is much less than surface magnetic field strength of the star ($>2.3$ kG) found by Guenther et al. (1999) and Johns-Krull et al. (2000). We discuss possible reasons of this difference.

This paper describes results of magnetic field measurements of white dwarfs carried out on the 6-m telescope for the last years. A magnetic field of about Be ~ 28 kG has been discovered in the degenerate star WD 1953-011.
A rotational period of WD 0009+501, 1.83 hours, has been discovered, the average magnetic field of the star is <Be> = -42.3 +/- 5.4 kG and its semi-amplitude of the rotational variability is 32.0 +/- 6.8 kG. The variable magnetic field of the bright normal (non-magnetic) degenerate star 40 Eridani B was confirmed in January 1999 by Zeeman time-resolved spectroscopy. Both the Halpha and the Hbeta lines give about the same results, we have selected two best periods in the magnetic field variability, 2h25m and 5h17m. The semi-amplitude of the rotational variations B_ max ~ 4000-5000 G and the average field is about zero +/- 500 G. If the magnetic field of 40 Eridani B is a central dipole, then the rotational axis inclination to the line of sight is i ~ 90 DEG, and the magnetic axis inclination to the rotational axis is about the same, beta ~ 90 DEG. For the first time an ultra-high signal-to-noise spectrum of the white dwarf has been obtained (S/N > 1000). We have found in this hydrogen-rich DA white dwarf 40 Eridani B (16500 K) that helium abundance is low (N(He)/N(H) < 10^{-7}), but the spectrum is rich in ultra-weak absorption lines of metals in low ionization states. It was proposed that these lines were produced in both circumstellar and interstellar gas.
