We examine the geometry of the post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star binary AC Her and its circumbinary disk. We show that the observations describe a binary orbit that is perpendicular to the disk with an angular momentum vector that is within $9^\circ$ of the binary eccentricity vector, meaning that the disk is close to a stable polar alignment. The most likely explanation for the very large inner radius of the dust is a planet within the circumbinary disk. This is therefore both the first reported detection of a polar circumbinary disk around a post-AGB binary and the first evidence of a polar circumbinary planet. We consider the dynamical constraints on the circumbinary disk size and mass. The polar circumbinary disk feeds circumstellar disks with gas on orbits that are highly inclined with respect to the binary orbit plane. The resulting circumstellar disk inclination could be anywhere from coplanar to polar depending upon the competition between the mass accretion and binary torques.

While giant planet occurrence rates increase with stellar mass, occurrence rates of close-in super-Earths decrease. This is in contradiction to the expectation that the total mass of the planets in a system scale with the protoplanetary disc mass and hence the stellar mass. Since the snow line plays an important role in the planet formation process we examine differences in the temperature structure of protoplanetary gas discs around stars of different mass. Protoplanetary discs likely contain a dead zone at the midplane that is sufficiently cold and dense for the magneto-rotational instability to be suppressed. As material builds up, the outer parts of the dead zone may be heated by self-gravity. The temperature in the disc can be below the snow line temperature far from the star and in the inner parts of a dead zone. The inner icy region has a larger radial extent around smaller mass stars. The increased mass of solid icy material may allow for the in situ formation of larger and more numerous planets close to a low-mass star. Super-Earths that form in the inner icy region may have a composition that includes a significant fraction of volatiles.

We consider a hierarchical triple system consisting of an inner eccentric binary with an outer companion. A highly misaligned circumbinary disk around the inner binary is subject to two competing effects: (i) nodal precession about the inner binary eccentricity vector that leads to an increase in misalignment (polar alignment) and (ii) Kozai-Lidov (KL) oscillations of eccentricity and inclination driven by the outer companion that leads to a reduction in the misalignment. The outcome depends upon the ratio of the timescales of these effects. If the inner binary torque dominates, then the disk aligns to a polar orientation. If the outer companion torque dominates, then the disk undergoes KL oscillations. In that case, the highly eccentric and misaligned disk is disrupted and accreted by the inner binary, while some mass is transferred to the outer companion. However, when the torques are similar, the outer parts of the circumbinary disk can undergo large eccentricity oscillations while the inclination remains close to the polar orientation. The range of initial disk inclinations that evolve to a polar orientation is smaller in the presence of the outer companion. Disk breaking is also more likely, at least temporarily, during the polar alignment process. The stellar orbits in HD 98800 have parameters such that polar alignment of the circumbinary disk is expected. In the absence of the gas, solid particles are unstable at much smaller radii than the gas disk inner tidal truncation radius because KL driven eccentricity leads to close encounters with the binary.

Abstract:
The manner in which warps in accretion disks evolve depends on the magnitude of the viscosity. For small viscosity $(α< H/R)$ the warp evolves in a wave-like manner; for large viscosity $H/R<α\ll 1$ it evolves diffusively. Here $α$ is the viscosity parameter and $H/R$ the disk aspect ratio. Currently there is no simple set of equations which describes the evolution in both regimes. In this paper w…

In this paper we describe a possible solution to this problem and introduce a set of one-dimensional equations that describe the evolution of a warped disk that are applicable in both high and low viscosity regimes for arbitrary tilts, but small warps.

In this paper we present an approach for supporting users in the difficult task of searching for video. We use collaborative feedback mined from the interactions of earlier users of a video search system to help users in their current search tasks. Our objective is to improve the quality of the results that users find, and in doing so also assist users to explore a large and complex information space. It is hoped that this will lead to them considering search options that they may not have considered otherwise. We performed a user centred evaluation. The results of our evaluation indicate that we achieved our goals, the performance of the users in finding relevant video clips was enhanced with our system; users were able to explore the collection of video clips more and users demonstrated a preference for our system that provided recommendations.

We report a novel mode of oscillatory crack propagation when a cutting tip is driven through a thin brittle polymer film. The phenomenon is so robust that it can easily be reproduced at hand (using CD packaging material for example). Careful experiments show that the amplitude and wavelength of the oscillatory crack path scale lineraly with the width of the cutting tip over a wide range of lenghtscales but are independant of the width of thje sheet and the cutting speed. A simple geometric model is presented, which provides a simple but thorough interpretation of the oscillations.
