Quasilinear diffusion coefficients in a finite Larmor radius expansion for ion cyclotron heated plasmas
Abstract: In this paper, a reduced model of quasilinear diffusion by a small Larmor radius approximation is derived to couple the Maxwell's equations and the Fokker-Planck equation self-consistently for ion cyclotron range of frequency waves in a tokamak. The reduced model ensures the important properties of the full model by Kennel-Engelmann diffusion, such as diffusion directions, wave polarizations, and… ▽ More

Formation of laser plasma channels in a stationary gas
Abstract: The formation of plasma channels with nonuniformity of about +- 3.5% has been demonstrated. The channels had a density of 1.2x10^19 cm-3 with a radius of 15 um and with length >= 2.5 mm. The channels were formed by 0.3 J, 100 ps laser pulses in a nonflowing gas, contained in a cylindrical chamber. The laser beam passed through the chamber along its axis via pinholes in the chamber walls. A plasm… ▽ More

Excitation of Large-ktheta Ion-Berstein Waves in Tokamaks
Abstract: The mode-converted ion-Bernstein wave excited in tokamaks is shown to exhibit certain very interesting behavior, including the attainment of very small poloidal phase velocities, the reversal of poloidal direction, and up-down asymmetries in propagation and dam**. Because of these effects, this wave holds promise for channeling {$α$-particle}\ power to ions, something that would make a tokamak f… ▽ More
