We use a design workbook of speculative scenarios as a values elicitation activity with 14 participants. The workbook depicts use case scenarios with smart home camera technologies that involve surveillance and uneven power relations. The scenarios were initially designed by the researchers to explore scenarios of privacy and surveillance within three social relationships involving "primary" and "non-primary" users: Parents-Children, Landlords-Tenants, and Residents-Domestic Workers. When the scenarios were utilized as part of a values elicitation activity with participants, we found that they reflected on a broader set of interconnected social values beyond privacy and surveillance, including autonomy and agency, physical safety, property rights, trust and accountability, and fairness. The paper suggests that future research about ethical issues in smart homes should conceptualize privacy as interconnected with a broader set of social values (which can align or be in tension with privacy), and reflects on considerations for doing research with non-primary users.

Biomedical data is growing exponentially, and managing it is increasingly challenging. While Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) data principles provide guidance, their adoption has proven difficult, especially in larger enterprises like pharmaceutical companies. In this manuscript, we describe how we leverage an Ontology-Based Data Management (OBDM) strategy for digital transformation in Novo Nordisk Research & Early Development. Here, we include both our technical blueprint and our approach for organizational change management. We further discuss how such an OBDM ecosystem plays a pivotal role in the organizations digital aspirations for data federation and discovery fuelled by artificial intelligence. Our aim for this paper is to share the lessons learned in order to foster dialogue with parties navigating similar waters while collectively advancing the efforts in the fields of data management, semantics and data driven drug discovery.

In this work, we present a quantization scheme for the damped harmonic oscillator (QDHO) using a framework known as momentous quantum mechanics. Our method relies on a semiclassical dynamical system derived from an extended classical Hamiltonian, where the phase-space variables are given by expectation values of observables and quantum dispersions. The significance of our study lies in its potential to serve as a foundational basis for the effective description of open quantum systems (OQS), and the description of dissipation in quantum mechanics. By employing the Bateman's dual model as the initial classical framework, and undergoing quantization, we demonstrate that our description aligns exceptionally well with the well-established Lindblad master equation. Furthermore, our approach exhibits robustness and broad applicability in the context of OQS, rendering it a versatile and powerful tool for studying various phenomena. We intend to contribute to the advancement of quantum physics by providing an effective means of quantizing the damped harmonic oscillator and shedding light on the behavior of open quantum systems.

Abstract:
A new potential class of nanolaminated and structurally complex materials, herein conceived as the Zigzag IntermetAllic (ZIA) phases, is proposed. A new potential class of nanolaminated and structurally complex materials, herein conceived as the Zigzag IntermetAllic (ZIA) phases, is proposed. A study of the constituent phases of a specific Nb--Si--Ni intermetallic alloy revealed that its ternary H-phase, \textit{i.e.}, the Nb$_3$SiNi$_2$ intermetallic compound (IMC), is a crystalline solid with the close-packed \textit{fcc} Bravais lattice, the 312 MAX phase stoichiometry and a layered atomic arrangement that may define an entire class of nanolaminated IMCs analogous to the nanolaminated ceramic compounds known today as the MAX phases. The electron microscopy investigation of the Nb$_{3}$SiNi$_{2}$ compound -- the first candidate ZIA phase -- revealed a remarkable structural complexity, as its ordered unit cell is made of 96 atoms. The ZIA phases extend the concept of nanolaminated crystalline solids well beyond the MAX phases family of early transition metal carbides/nitrides, most likely broadening the spectrum of achievable material properties into domains typically not covered by the MAX phases. Furthermore, this work uncovers that both families of nanolaminated crystalline solids, \textit{i.e.}, the herein introduced \textit{fcc} ZIA phases and all known variants of the \textit{hcp} MAX phases, obey the same overarching stoichiometric rule $P_{x+y}A_xN_y$, where $x$ and $y$ are integers ranging from 1 to 6.

We study the behavior of a quantum particle trapped in a confining potential in one dimension under multiple sudden changes of velocity and/or acceleration. We develop the appropriate formalism to deal with such situation and we use it to calculate the probability of transition for simple problems such as the particle in an infinite box and the simple harmonic oscillator. For the infinite box of length $L$ under two and three sudden changes of velocity, where the initial and final velocity vanish, we find that the system undergoes quantum revivals for $Δt = τ_0 \equiv \frac{4mL^2}{π\hbar}$, regardless of other parameters ($Δt$ is the time elapsed between the first and last change of velocity). For the simple harmonic oscillator we find that the states obtained by suddenly changing (one change) the velocity and/or the acceleration of the potential, for a particle initially in an eigenstate of the static potential, are {\sl coherent} states. For multiple changes of acceleration or velocity we find that the quantum expectation value of the Hamiltonian is remarkably close (possibly identical) to the corresponding classical expectation values. Finally, the probability of transition for a particle in an accelerating harmonic oscillator (no sudden changes) calculated with our formalism agrees with the formula derived long time ago by Ludwig and recently modified by Dodonov~\cite{Dodonov21}, but with a different expression for the dimensionless parameter $γ$. Our probability agrees with the one of ref.~\cite{Dodonov21} for $γ\ll 1$ but is not periodic in time (it decays monotonously), contrary to the result derived in ref.~\cite{Dodonov21}.

We provide a semiclassical description of the double-slit experiment based on momentous quantum mechanics, where the implementation of canonical variables facilitate the derivation of the equations of motion for the system. We show the evolution of individual particles and their semiclassical trajectories, collectively reproduce the well-known quantum interference pattern. It is found that the non-crossing rule for trajectories, present in Bohmian mechanics, is not required under our treatment. We are able to follow classical configuration variables from this semiclassical scheme, and discuss substantial differences between our description and the Bohmian perspective

The nuclear structure of the Rb isotopes makes the experiment particularly sensitive to spin-dependent interactions of the proton. The spin-dependent component of the gravitational energy of the proton in the Earth's field is found to be smaller than $3 \times 10^{-18}~{\rm eV}$, improving laboratory constraints on long-range monopole-dipole interactions by over three orders of magnitude.

The pyrochlore structure was confirmed via grazing angle x-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). TEM analysis also showed that the films were dense and of uniform thickness with surface roughness of approximately 8nm. The total conductivity measured with AC impedance spectroscopy was found to be independent of thickness and comparable in magnitude to that of bulk Gd2Ti2O7. Differences were observed in the Arrhenius behavior between the bulk and thin film samples and are attributed to varying levels of background impurities.

The experimental concept of a search for a long-range coupling between rubidium (Rb) nuclear spins and the mass of the Earth is described. The experiment is based on simultaneous measurement of the spin precession frequencies for overlap** ensembles of Rb-85 and Rb-87 atoms contained within an evacuated, antirelaxation-coated vapor cell. Rubidium atoms are spin-polarized in the presence of an applied magnetic field by synchronous optical pum** with circularly polarized laser light. Spin precession is probed by measuring optical rotation of far-off-resonant, linearly polarized laser light. Simultaneous measurement of Rb-85 and Rb-87 spin precession frequencies enables suppression of magnetic-field-related systematic effects. The nuclear structure of the Rb isotopes makes the experiment particularly sensitive to anomalous spin-dependent interactions of the proton. Experimental sensitivity and a variety of systematic effects are discussed, and initial data are presented.
