Snowmass 2021 White Paper on Upgrading SuperKEKB with a Polarized Electron Beam: Discovery Potential and Proposed Implementation

Abstract: Upgrading the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider with polarized electron beams opens a new program of precision physics at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. This white paper describes the physics potential of this `Chiral Belle' program. It includes projections for precision measurements of $\sin^2θ_W$ that can be obtained from independent left-right asymmetry measurements of $e^+e^-$ transi… ▽ More Upgrading the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider with polarized electron beams opens a new program of precision physics at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. This white paper describes the physics potential of this `Chiral Belle' program. It includes projections for precision measurements of $\sin^2θ_W$ that can be obtained from independent left-right asymmetry measurements of $e^+e^-$ transitions to pairs of electrons, muons, taus, charm and b-quarks. The $\sin^2θ_W$ precision obtainable at SuperKEKB will match that of the LEP/SLC world average, but at the centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Measurements of the couplings for muons, charm, and $b$-quarks will be substantially improved and the existing $3σ$ discrepancy between the SLC $A_{LR}$ and LEP $A_{FB}^b$ measurements will be addressed. Precision measurements of neutral current universality will be more than an order of magnitude more precise than currently available. As the energy scale is well away from the $Z^0$-pole, the precision measurements will have sensitivity to the presence of a parity-violating dark sector gauge boson, $Z_{\rm dark}$. The program also enables the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment $g-2$ form factor of the $τ$ to be made at an unprecedented level of precision. A precision of $10^{-5}$ level is accessible with 40~ab$^{-1}$ and with more data it would start to approach the $10^{-6}$ level. This technique would provide the most precise information from the third generation about potential new physics explanations of the muon $g-2$ $4σ$ anomaly. Additional $τ$ and QCD physics programs enabled or enhanced with having polarized electron beams are also discussed in this White Paper. Abstract: We present a summary of future prospects for direct detection of dark matter within the GeV/c2 to TeV/c2 mass range. This is paired with a new definition of the neutrino fog in order to better quantify the rate of diminishing returns on sensitivity due to irreducible neutrino backgrounds. A new Monte Carlo Generator for BSM physics in $B\to K^* \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays with an application to lepton non-universality in angular distributions

Abstract: Within the widely used EvtGen framework, we have added a new event generator model for $B\to K^* \ell^+ \ell^-$ with improved standard model (SM) decay amplitudes and possible BSM physics contributions, which are implemented in the operator product expansion in terms of Wilson coefficients. This event generator can then be used to investigate the experimental sensitivity to the most general BSM si… ▽ More Within the widely used EvtGen framework, we have added a new event generator model for $B\to K^* \ell^+ \ell^-$ with improved standard model (SM) decay amplitudes and possible BSM physics contributions, which are implemented in the operator product expansion in terms of Wilson coefficients. This event generator can then be used to investigate the experimental sensitivity to the most general BSM signal resulting from dimension-six operators. We describe the advantages and potential of the newly developed `Sibidanov Physics Generator' in improving experimental sensitivity of searches for lepton non-universal BSM physics and clarifying signatures. The new generator can properly simulate BSM scenarios, interference between SM and BSM amplitudes, and correlations between different BSM observables as well as acceptance bias. We show that exploiting such correlations substantially improves experimental sensitivity. As a demonstration of the utility of the MC generator, we examine the prospects for improved measurements of lepton non-universality in angular distributions for $B \to K^* \ell \ell$ decays from the expected 50 ab$^{-1}$ data set of the Belle II experiment, using a four-dimensional unbinned maximum likelihood fit. We describe promising experimental signatures and correlations between observables. The use of lepton-universality violating $Δ$-observables significantly reduce uncertainties in the SM expectations due to QCD and resonance effects, are ideally suited for Belle II with the large data sets expected in the next decade. Our simulation studies also show that Belle II should have excellent sensitivity to BSM physics in the Wilson coefficients $C_7$ and $C_7'$, which appears at low $q^2$ in the di-electron channel. △ Less

Recoil imaging for directional detection of dark matter, neutrinos, and physics beyond the Standard Model

Abstract: Recoil imaging entails the detection of spatially resolved ionization tracks generated by particle interactions. This is a highly sought-after capability in many classes of detector, with broad applications across particle and astroparticle physics. However, at low energies, where ionization signatures are small in size, recoil imaging only seems to be a practical goal for micro-pattern gas detect… ▽ More Recoil imaging entails the detection of spatially resolved ionization tracks generated by particle interactions. However, at low energies, where ionization signatures are small in size, recoil imaging only seems to be a practical goal for micro-pattern gas detectors. This white paper outlines the physics case for recoil imaging, and puts forward a decadal plan to advance towards the directional detection of low-energy recoils with sensitivity and resolution close to fundamental performance limits. The science case covered includes: the discovery of dark matter into the neutrino fog, directional detection of sub-MeV solar neutrinos, the precision study of coherent-elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, the detection of solar axions, the measurement of the Migdal effect, X-ray polarimetry, and several other applied physics goals. We also outline the R&D programs necessary to test concepts that are crucial to advance detector performance towards their fundamental limit: single primary electron sensitivity with full 3D spatial resolution at the $\sim$100 micron-scale. These advancements include: the use of negative ion drift, electron counting with high-definition electronic readout, time projection chambers with optical readout, and the possibility for nuclear recoil tracking in high-density gases such as argon. We also discuss the readout and electronics systems needed to scale-up such detectors to the ton-scale and beyond. △ Less

Abstract: The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider aims to collect an unprecedented data set of $\rm 50~{\rm ab}^{-1}$ to study $CP$-violation in the $B$-meson system and to search for Physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In order to collect the planned data set within approximately one decade, the target is to reac… ▽ More The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider aims to collect an unprecedented data set of $\rm 50~{\rm ab}^{-1}$ to study $CP$-violation in the $B$-meson system and to search for Physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). SuperKEKB is already the world's highest-luminosity collider. In order to collect the planned data set within approximately one decade, the target is to reach a peak luminosity of $\rm 6.3 \times 10^{35}~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ by further increasing the beam currents and reducing the beam-size at the interaction point by squeezing the betatron function down to $β^{*}_{\rm y}=\rm 0.3~mm$. Beam backgrounds are a key challenge in this context. We estimate the expected background evolution in the next ten years and discuss potential challenges and background mitigation strategies. We find that backgrounds will remain high but acceptable until a luminosity of at least $\rm 2.8\times 10^{35}~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ is reached at $β^{*}_{\rm y}=\rm 0.6~mm$. Beyond this luminosity, predictions are highly uncertain, owing to a planned redesign of the interaction region. Improved background estimates with reduced uncertainties for the final, maximum-luminosity operation will require completion of this redesign. △ Less

Abstract: We report the first search for the penguin-dominated process $B^0 \rightarrow K_S^0 K_S^0 γ$ using the full data sample of $772\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Understanding and mitigating these backgrounds is critical to the success of the Belle~II experi\ ment. Understanding and mitigating these backgrounds is critical to the success of the Belle~II experi\ ment. We report on the first background measurements performed after roll-in of the Belle II detector, a period known as SuperKE\ KB Phase 2, utilizing both the BEAST II system of dedicated background detectors and the Belle II detector itself. We also repor\ t on first revisions to the background simulation made in response to our findings. Backgrounds measured include contributions f\ rom synchrotron radiation, beam-gas, Touschek, and injection backgrounds. At the end of Phase 2, single-beam backgrounds origina\ ting from the 4 GeV positron Low Energy Ring (LER) agree reasonably well with simulation, while backgrounds from the 7 GeV elect\ ron High Energy Ring (HER) are approximately one order of magnitude higher than simulation. We extrapolate these backgrounds for\ ward and conclude it is safe to install the Belle II vertex detector. △ Less

First Measurement of the $Λ_c^+ \to p η'$ decay

Abstract: We present the first measurement of the branching fraction of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) decay $Λ_c^+ \to p η'$ with $η' \to ηπ^+π^-$, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 981 $\rm fb^{-1}$, collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}$$e^{-}$ asymmetric-energy collider. A significant $Λ_c^+$ signal is observed for the first time with a signal significanc… ▽ More We present the first measurement of the branching fraction of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) decay $Λ_c^+ \to p η'$ with $η' \to ηπ^+π^-$, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 981 $\rm fb^{-1}$, collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}$$e^{-}$ asymmetric-energy collider. A significant $Λ_c^+$ signal is observed for the first time with a signal significance of 5.4$σ$. The relative branching fraction with respect to the normalization mode $Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+$ is measured to be \begin{equation*} \frac{{\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p η')}{{\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^-π^+)} = (7.54 \pm 1.32 \pm 0.75) \times 10^{-3}, \end{equation*} where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Using the world-average value of ${\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^-π^+) = (6.28\pm0.32)\times10^{-2}$, we obtain \begin{equation*} {\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p η') = (4.73 \pm 0.82 \pm 0.47 \pm 0.24)\times 10^{-4}, \end{equation*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and from ${\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+)$, respectively. △ Less

Search for a light Higgs boson in single-photon decays of $Υ(1S)$ using $Υ(2S) \to π^+ π^- Υ(1S)$ tagging method

Abstract: We search for a light Higgs boson ($A^0$) decaying into a $τ^+τ^-$ or $μ^+μ^-$ pair in the radiative decays of $Υ(1S)$. The production of $Υ(1S)$ mesons is tagged by $Υ(2S)\to π^+ π^- Υ(1S)$ transitions, using 158 million $Υ(2S)$ events accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. No significant $A^0$ signals in the mass range from the $τ^+τ^-$ or… ▽ More We search for a light Higgs boson ($A^0$) decaying into a $τ^+τ^-$ or $μ^+μ^-$ pair in the radiative decays of $Υ(1S)$. The production of $Υ(1S)$ mesons is tagged by $Υ(2S)\to π^+ π^- Υ(1S)$ transitions, using 158 million $Υ(2S)$ events accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. No significant $A^0$ signals in the mass range from the $τ^+τ^-$ or $μ^+μ^-$ threshold to 9.2 GeV/$c^2$ are observed. We set the upper limits at 90\% credibility level (C.L.) on the product branching fractions for $Υ(1S)\to γA^0$ and $A^0\to τ^+τ^-$ varying from $3.8\times10^{-6}$ to $1.5\times10^{-4}$. Our results represent an approximately twofold improvement on the current world best upper limits for the $Υ(1S)\to γA^0(\to τ^+τ^-)$ production. For $A^0\to μ^+μ^-$, the upper limits on the product branching fractions for $Υ(1S)\to γA^0$ and $A^0\to μ^+μ^-$ are at the same level as the world average limits, and vary from $3.1\times10^{-7}$ to $1.6\times10^{-5}$. The upper limits at 90\% C.L. on the Yukawa coupling $f_{Υ(1S)}$ and mixing angle ${\rm sin}θ_{A^0}$ are also given. △ Less

Abstract: We present the first observation of the $Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} μ^{+} ν_μ$ decay and present measurements of the branching fraction ratios of the $Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ decays compared to the reference mode $Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} π^+$, ($\ell = e$ or $μ$). This analysis is based on 89.5 fb$^{-1}$, 711 fb$^{-1}$, and 121.1 fb$^{-1}$ data samples collected with the Belle detector at the… ▽ More We present the first observation of the $Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} μ^{+} ν_μ$ decay and present measurements of the branching fraction ratios of the $Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ decays compared to the reference mode $Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} π^+$, ($\ell = e$ or $μ$). This analysis is based on 89.5 fb$^{-1}$, 711 fb$^{-1}$, and 121.1 fb$^{-1}$ data samples collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider at the center-of-mass energies of 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.86 GeV, respectively. The $Ω_{c}^{0}$ signal yields are extracted by fitting $M_{Ω^{-} \ell^{+}}$ and $M_{Ω^{-}π^+}$ spectra. The branching fraction ratios ${\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} e^{+} ν_{e})/{\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} π^+)$ and ${\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} μ^{+} ν_μ)/{\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} π^+)$ are measured to be $1.98 \pm0.13~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.08~({\rm syst.})$ and $ 1.94 \pm 0.18~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.10~({\rm syst.})$, respectively. The ratio of ${\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} e^{+} ν_{e})/{\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-} μ^{+} ν_μ)$ is measured to be $1.02 \pm 0.10~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.02~({\rm syst.})$, which is consistent with the expectation of lepton flavor universality. △ Less

Abstract: We report results from a search for the decay $B_s^0\rightarrowηη$ using 121.4 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The measurements of $\mathcal{B}$ are the most precise to date and are in good agreement with previous results, as is the measurement of ${\cal A}_{CP}(B^{+}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{+})$. Study of $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}h^{-} (h=K/π)$ decays at Belle

Abstract: We present a measurement of the branching fractions of the Cabibbo favored $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}π^{-}$ and the Cabibbo suppressed $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}K^{-}$ decays. Application of recoil-imaging time projection chambers to directional neutron background measurements in the SuperKEKB accelerator tunnel

Abstract: Gaseous time projection chambers (TPCs) with high readout segmentation are capable of reconstructing detailed 3D ionization distributions of nuclear recoils resulting from elastic neutron scattering. Using a system of six compact TPCs with pixel ASIC readout, filled with a 70:30 mixture of He:CO$_2$ gas, we analyze the first directional measurements of beam-induced neutron backgrounds in the tunne… ▽ More Gaseous time projection chambers (TPCs) with high readout segmentation are capable of reconstructing detailed 3D ionization distributions of nuclear recoils resulting from elastic neutron scattering. Using a system of six compact TPCs with pixel ASIC readout, filled with a 70:30 mixture of He:CO$_2$ gas, we analyze the first directional measurements of beam-induced neutron backgrounds in the tunnel regions surrounding the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. With the use of 3D recoil tracking, we show that these TPCs are capable of maintaining nearly $100\%$ nuclear recoil purity to reconstructed ionization energies ($E_\text{reco}$) as low as 5 $\mathrm{keV_\text{ee}}$. Using a large sample of simulated $^4$He, $^{12}$C, and $^{16}$O recoil tracks, we find consistency between predicted and measured recoil energy spectra in five of the six TPCs, providing useful validation of the neutron production mechanisms modeled in simulation. Restricting this sample to $^4$He recoil tracks with $E_\text{reco}>40$ $\mathrm{keV_\text{ee}}$, we demonstrate axial angular resolutions within $8^{\circ}$ and we introduce a procedure that under suitable conditions, correctly assigns the vector direction to $91\%$ of simulated $^4$He recoils. Applying this procedure to assign vector directions to measured $^4$He recoil tracks, we observe consistency between the angular distributions of observed and simulated recoils, providing first experimental evidence of localized neutron "hotspots" in the accelerator tunnel. Observed rates of nuclear recoils in these TPCs suggest that simulation overestimates the neutron flux from these hotspots. △ Less

We fit the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ candidate energy, continuum-suppression variable, dipion masses, and angular distributions of the resulting samples, to determine a signal yield of $104\pm16$ events. The signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to ρ^+ρ^0) = [20.6 \pm 3.2(\rm stat) \pm 4.0(\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, and $f_L(B^+ \to ρ^+ρ^0) = 0.936 ^{+0.049}_{-0.041}(\rm stat)\pm 0.021(\rm syst)$. This first Belle II $B^+ \to ρ^+ρ^0$ angular analysis yields results compatible with previous determinations, and indicates Belle II performance superior to early Belle results. △ Less

In order to identify and reconstruct the $X_c$ system, we reconstruct one of the two $B$-mesons using machine learning techniques in fully hadronic decay modes. The moments are measured with progressively increasing threshold selections on $q^2$ starting with a lower value of 3.0 $\mathrm{GeV}^2$ in steps of 0.5 $\mathrm{GeV}^2$ up to a value of 10.0 $\mathrm{GeV}^2$. The measured moments are further unfolded, correcting for reconstruction and selection effects as well as QED final state radiation. Primary track recovery in high-definition gas time projection chambers

Abstract: We develop and validate a new algorithm called \textit{primary track recovery} (\ptr) that effectively deconvolves known physics and detector effects from nuclear recoil tracks in gas time projection chambers (TPCs) with high-resolution readout. This gives access to the primary track charge, length, and vector direction (hel** to resolve the "head-tail" ambiguity). Additionally, \ptr provides a measurement of the transverse and longitudinal diffusion widths, which can be used to determine the absolute position of tracks in the drift direction for detector fiducialization. Using simulated helium recoils in an atmospheric pressure TPC with a 70:30 mixture of He:CO$_2$ we compare the performance of \ptr to traditional methods for all key track variables. We find that the algorithm reduces reconstruction errors, including those caused by charge integration, for tracks with mean length-to-width ratios 1.4 and above, corresponding to recoil energies of $20$ keV and above in the studied TPCs. We show that \ptr improves on existing methods for head-tail disambiguation, particularly for highly inclined tracks, and improves the determination of the absolute position of recoils on the drift axis via transverse diffusion. We find that \ptr can partially recover charge structure integrated out by the detector in the $z$ direction, but that its determination of energy and length have worse resolution compared to existing methods. We use experimental data to qualitatively verify these findings and discuss implications for future directional detectors at the low-energy frontier. △ Less

SF$_6$ is of particular interest to the directional dark matter detection community, as its low thermal diffusion helps to retain recoil ionization track features over long drift lengths. The high-gain data is well described purely in terms of the reduced electric field strength and the number of GEMs, and the robust relationship between the RFTC and the average, reduced, electric field strength across the GEMs is emphasized. The associated (pulse-height) resolution measurements are used to discuss the variance of the avalanche distribution and to describe and estimate the lower limits of energy resolution one should expect to measure using a simple relationship with the RFTC. In the end, a description of avalanche gain, its effect on energy resolution, and the contributing experimental parameters in GEM-based detectors is developed over a broad parameter space for further use. △ Less

First 3D vector tracking of helium recoils for fast neutron measurements at SuperKEKB

Abstract: We present results from the first deployment of novel, high definition, compact gas Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) with pixel chip readout as part of the BEAST II beam background measurement project at SuperKEKB. The TPCs provide detailed 3D imaging of ionization from neutron-induced nuclear recoils in a helium and carbon dioxide target gas mixture at standard temperature and pressure. We find ex… ▽ More We present results from the first deployment of novel, high definition, compact gas Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) with pixel chip readout as part of the BEAST II beam background measurement project at SuperKEKB. The TPCs provide detailed 3D imaging of ionization from neutron-induced nuclear recoils in a helium and carbon dioxide target gas mixture at standard temperature and pressure. We find excellent electron background rejection, leading to background-free nuclear recoil measurements above 50 keVee, despite the extreme high-background environment. We measure an angular resolution better than 20° for recoil tracks longer than 1.7 mm, corresponding to an average ionization energy of ~100 keVee. We also obtain the 3D vector direction of helium recoils by utilizing charge profile measurements along the recoil axis, with a correct head/tail assignment efficiency of approximately 80%. With this performance, we present comparisons between measured and simulated event rates, recoil energy spectra, and directional distributions originating from beam-gas and Touschek beam losses at SuperKEKB. We utilize head/tail recognition to distinguish neutron components travelling with positive radial velocity in the Belle II coordinate system from those with opposite directionality. Finally, we present a novel method of discriminating beam-gas interactions from Touschek beam losses that can eliminate the need for dedicated accelerator runs for background measurements. This method is still statistics-limited. However, future studies should be able to verify this method, which in turn could lead to neutron background analysis runs symbiotic with normal Belle II operation. The capabilities demonstrated here also suggest that high definition recoil imaging in gas TPCs is applicable to low energy, low-background experiments, such as directional dark matter searches. △ Less

The samples are analysed using two-dimensional fits in $ΔE$ and $M_{\it bc}$ to determine signal yields of approximately 568, 103, and 115 decays for the channels $B^0 \to K^+π^-$, $B^+ \to K_{\rm S}^0π^+$, and $B^0 \to π^+π^-$, respectively. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. Abstract: We report measurements related to hadronic $B$ decays to final states that contain charm mesons. The analyses are performed on a $62.8~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ data set collected by the Belle II experiment at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the mass of the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. Improved simulation of beam backgrounds and collimation at SuperKEKB

Abstract: Searches for dark matter-induced recoils have made impressive advances in the last few years. Yet the field is confronted by several outstanding problems. First, the inevitable background of solar neutrinos will soon inhibit the conclusive identification of many dark matter models. Second, and more fundamentally, current experiments have no practical way of confirming a detected signal's galactic… ▽ More Searches for dark matter-induced recoils have made impressive advances in the last few years. Yet the field is confronted by several outstanding problems. First, the inevitable background of solar neutrinos will soon inhibit the conclusive identification of many dark matter models. Second, and more fundamentally, current experiments have no practical way of confirming a detected signal's galactic origin. The concept of directional detection addresses both of these issues while offering opportunities to study novel dark matter and neutrino-related physics. The concept remains experimentally challenging, but gas time projection chambers are an increasingly attractive option, and when properly configured, would allow directional measurements of both nuclear and electron recoils. In this review, we reassess the required detector performance and survey relevant technologies. Fortuitously, the highly-segmented detectors required to achieve good directionality also enable several fundamental and applied physics measurements. We comment on near-term challenges and how the field could be advanced. △ Less

Abstract: We present measurements of partial branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic $B \to X_u \, \ell^+\, ν_{\ell}$ decays using the full Belle data set of 711 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance and for $\ell = e, μ$. Inclusive semileptonic $B \to X_u \, \ell^+\, ν_{\ell}$ decays are CKM suppressed and measurements are complicated by the large background from CKM-favored… ▽ More We present measurements of partial branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic $B \to X_u \, \ell^+\, ν_{\ell}$ decays using the full Belle data set of 711 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance and for $\ell = e, μ$. Inclusive semileptonic $B \to X_u \, \ell^+\, ν_{\ell}$ decays are CKM suppressed and measurements are complicated by the large background from CKM-favored $B \to X_c \, \ell^+\, ν_{\ell}$ transitions, which have a similar signature. Using machine learning techniques, we reduce this and other backgrounds effectively, whilst retaining access to a large fraction of the $B \to X_u \, \ell^+\, ν_{\ell}$ phase space and high signal efficiency. We measure partial branching fractions in three phase-space regions covering about $31\%$ to $86\%$ of the accessible $B \to X_u \, \ell^+\, ν_{\ell}$ phase space. The most inclusive measurement corresponds to the phase space with lepton energies of $E_\ell^B > 1 $ GeV, and we obtain $Δ\mathcal{B}(B \to X_u \ell^+ \, ν_\ell) = \left( 1.59 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.16 \right) \times 10^{-3}$ from a two-dimensional fit of the hadronic mass spectrum and the four-momentum-transfer squared distribution, with the uncertainties denoting the statistical and systematic error. We find $\left| V_{ub} \right| = \left( 4.10 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.15 \right) \times 10^{-3}$ from an average of four calculations for the partial decay rate with the third uncertainty denoting the average theory error. This value is higher but compatible with the determination from exclusive semileptonic decays within 1.3 standard deviations. In addition, we report charmless inclusive partial branching fractions separately for $B^+$ and $B^0$ mesons as well as for electron and muon final states. No isospin breaking or lepton flavor universality violating effects are observed. △ Less

For $B^+ \to φφK^+$, the branching fraction and $CP$-violation asymmetry measured below the $η_{c}$ threshold ($m_{φφ}<2.85\,{\rm GeV}/c^2$) are $[3.43^{\,+\,0.48}_{\,-\,0.46}({\rm stat})\pm 0.22({\rm syst})] \times10^{-6}$ and $-0.02\pm0.11({\rm stat})\pm0.01({\rm syst})$, respectively. Similarly, the branching fraction obtained for $B^0 \toφφK^0$ below the $η_{c}$ threshold is $[3.02^{\,+\,0.75}_{\,-\,0.66} ({\rm stat})\pm \,0.20({\rm syst})]\times10^{-6}$. We also measure the $CP$-violation asymmetry for $B^+ \toφφK^+$ within the $η_{c}$ region ($m_{φφ}\in [2.94,3.02]\,{\rm GeV}/c^2$) to be $+0.12\pm0.12({\rm stat})\pm0.01({\rm syst})$. △ Less

Observables for Recoil Identification in High-Definition Gas Time Projection Chambers

Gas Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) can enable directional recoil detection if the readout granu… ▽ More Directional detection of nuclear recoils is broadly desirable in nuclear and particle physics. At low recoil energies, this capability may be used to confirm the cosmological origin of a dark matter signal, to penetrate the so-called neutrino floor, or to distinguish between different neutrino sources. Gas Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) can enable directional recoil detection if the readout granularity is sufficiently high, as is the case when micro-pattern gaseous detectors (MPGDs) are utilized. A key challenge in such detectors is identifying and rejecting background electron recoil events caused by gamma rays from radioactive contaminants in the detector materials and the environment. We define new observables that can distinguish electron and nuclear recoils, even at keV-scale energies, based on the simulated ionization's topology. We perform a simulation study that shows these observables outperform the traditionally used discriminant, dE/dx, by up to three orders of magnitude. Furthermore, these new observables work well even at ionization energies well below 10 keV and remain robust even in the regime where directionality fails. △ Less

No signal is found in the dark photo… ▽ More We present a search for the dark photon $A^{\prime}$ in the $B^0 \to A^{\prime} A^{\prime}$ decays, where $A^{\prime}$ subsequently decays to $e^+ e^-$, $μ^+ μ^-$, and $π^+ π^-$. The search is performed by analyzing $772 \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ events collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ energy-asymmetric collider at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. No signal is found in the dark photon mass range $0.01~\mathrm{GeV}/c^2 \le m_{A^{\prime}} \le 2.62~\mathrm{GeV}/c^2$, and we set upper limits of the branching fraction of $B^0 \to A^{\prime} A^{\prime}$ at the 90\% confidence level. The products of branching fractions, $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to A^{\prime} A^{\prime}) \times \mathcal{B}(A^{\prime} \to e^+ e^-)^2$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to A^{\prime} A^{\prime}) \times \mathcal{B}(A^{\prime} \to μ^+ μ^-)^2$, have limits of the order of $10^{-8}$ depending on the $A^{\prime}$ mass. Furthermore, considering $A^{\prime}$ decay rate to each pair of charged particles, the upper limits of $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to A^{\prime} A^{\prime})$ are of the order of $10^{-8}$-$10^{-5}$. From the upper limits of $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to A^{\prime} A^{\prime})$, we obtain the Higgs portal coupling for each assumed dark photon and dark Higgs mass. The Higgs portal couplings are of the order of $10^{-2}$-$10^{-1}$ at $m_{h'} \simeq m_{B^0} \pm 40~\mathrm{MeV}/c^2$ and $10^{-1}$-$1$ at $m_{h'} \simeq m_{B^0} \pm 3~\mathrm{GeV}/c^2$. △ Less
