Out-of-equilibrium investigation of strongly correlated materials deciphers the hidden equilibrium properties. Herein, we have investigated the out-of-equilibrium magnetic properties of polycrystalline Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7 spin ices. The experimental results show the emergence of magnetic field-induced anomalous hysteresis observed only in temperature/magnetic field-dependent ac susceptibility measurements. The observed memory effect (anomalous thermomagnetic hysteresis) strongly depends on the driving thermal and non-thermal variables. Contrary, in the absence of the magnetic field, dipolar interaction induced Ising paramagnetic to spin ice crossover develops a liquid-gas transition type hysteresis below 4 K. Unlike field-induced hysteresis, it shows weak dependency on thermal and non-thermal variables. Due to the non-colinear spin structure, the applied dc bias magnetic field produces quench disorder sites in the cooperative Ising spin matrix and suppresses the spin-phonon coupling. These quench disorders create dynamic spin correlations governed by quantum fluctuations, having slow spin relaxation and quick decay times, which additionally contribute to ac susceptibility. The initial conditions and measurement protocol decide the magnitude and sign of this dynamical term contributing to ac susceptibility. It has been suggested that such kind of out-of-equilibrium properties emerge by the cumulative effect of geometric frustration, disorder, quantum fluctuations, and the cooperative nature of spin dynamics of these materials.

We herein present the spin freezing dynamics of stuffed polycrystalline compound Dy$_2$Ti$_{1.8}$Mn$_{0.2}$O$_7$. In Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, spin freezes with ice-like spin relaxations at a temperature around 3 K (T$_i$) along with another spin freezing at a temperature around 0.7 K (T\textless T$_i$). These relaxations can be observed prominently with an application of varying DC magnetic field bias and applied AC-field. We show here that with fractional inclusion of Mn at the Ti site in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, there is a significant shift in these temperatures. In Dy$_2$Ti$_{1.8}$Mn$_{0.2}$O$_7$ the T$_i$ shifts to a higher temperature around 5 K and freezing belonging to T\textless T$_i$ shifts to 2.5 K without any application of external DC Bias and/or AC-field. The inclusion of Mn at Ti site also enhances the ferromagnetic interaction for Dy$_2$Ti$_{1.8}$Mn$_{0.2}$O$_7$ as compared to Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. Arrhenius fit of freezing temperature with frequency for Dy$_2$Ti$_{1.8}$Mn$_{0.2}$O$_7$ shows that these spin relaxations at T$_i$ and T\textless T$_i$ are thermally induced. Low-temperature structural change in lattice parameters and crystal field phonon coupling has been studied using synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Debye-Gruineisen analysis of temperature-dependent lattice volume shows the emergence of crystal field phonon coupling at a much higher temperature (70 K) in Dy$_2$Ti$_{1.8}$Mn$_{0.2}$O$_7$ in contrast to 40 K in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. These findings make Dy$_2$Ti$_{1.8}$Mn$_{0.2}$O$_7$ a suitable system to explore the application of the spin ice phenomenon at a workable temperature.

Despite the technological significance of the tetragonal PbTiO3 for the piezoelectric transducer industry, its high pressure behaviour is quite controversial as two entirely different scenarios, involving pressure induced (1) morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) like structural transition with concomitant rotation of the ferroelectric polarization vector and (2) antiferrodistortive (AFD) phase transition followed by emergence of a reentrant ferroelectric phase, have been proposed in recent theoretical and experimental studies. We have attempted to address these controversies through a high resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction study of pressure induced phase transitions in the tetragonal phase of a modified PbTiO3 composition containing 50% BiFeO3, where BiFeO3 was added to enhance the AFD instability of PbTiO3. We present here the first experimental evidence for the presence of the characteristic superlattice reflections due to an AFD transition at a moderate pressure pc1 ~2.15 GPa in broad agreement with scenario (2), but the high pressure ferroelectric phase belongs to the monoclinic space group Cc, and not the tetragonal space group I4cm predicted under scenario (2), which permits the rotation of the ferroelectric polarization vector as per scenario (1). We show that the monoclinic distortion angle and ferroelectric polarization of the Cc phase initially decrease with increasing pressure for p < 7 GPa, but start increasing above pc2 ~ 7 GPa due to an isostructural Cc-I to Cc-II transition reminiscent of MA(apc > bpc ~ cpc) to MB(apc< bpc ~ cpc) transition predicted for MPB systems. We also show that octahedral tilting provides an efficient mechanism for accommodating pressure induced volume reduction for the stabilisation of the reentrant ferroelectric phase Cc-II.

To investigate the possible origin and mechanism of ferroelectricity in polycrystalline spin ices Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 a detailed dielectric study has been performed. Experimental finding suggests that both materials have two prominent diffuse ferroelectric phase transitions around 90K and 36K. These transitions are distinctly generated by the lattice distortions at the oxygen sites as confirmed by triggered distortions and order of activation energy. Due to the incompatibility of the gyrotropic order with any phonon mode at the Brillouin zone center, observed diffuse ferroelectric phase transitions can have only an electronic origin. Through magnetic susceptibility and previously reported spin relaxation behavior it has been concluded that single ion anisotropy has thermal variation, due to which orientation of rare earth magnetic moment from isotropic non-Ising to Ising spin along local <111>axis takes place. This spin orientation distinctly distorting the both oxygen sites of the structure reflects in the form of diffuse ferroelectric phase transitions.

Development of reliable and eco-friendly processes for synthesis of metallic nanoparticles is an important step in the field of application of nanotechnology. In the present study, extracellular synthesis of silver nanoparticles using culture supernatant of plant growth promoting rhizobacterium, Pseudomonas sp.ARS22. The biosynthesis of AgNPs by Pseudomonas sp.ARS22 was monitored by UVvisible spectrum that showed the surface plasmon resonance peak at 410 nm, an important characteristic of AgNPs. Furthermore, the morphological, elemental, functional and thermal characterization of arsAgNPs was carried out using the electron and atomic microscopies, FTIR spectroscopy and Atomic Force microscopy, respectively. The arsAgNPs were spherical in shape. The DebyeScherrer equation was used to calculate particle sizes and the silver nanoparticles of approximate size 10 to 30 nm were observed. The process of reduction is extracellular, which makes it an easier method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles.

The coexistence and coupling of magnetic and ferroelectric orderings in single phase multiferroics has evinced enormous scientific interest as it involves breaking of time reversal and space inversion symmetries in the same material. The mutual controllability of the two diverse orderings in multiferroics has potential for develo** new generation multifunctional sensor, actuator and data storage devices. We present here evidence for a new exotic facet of multiferroicity, whereby one can raise the strength of antiferromagnetic (AFM) superexchange interaction and hence tune the Néel temperature (TN) from ~120K in bulk to ~350K in 18nm size particles by tuning the ferroelectric distortion in the tetragonal phase of multiferroic (1-x)BiFeO3 -xPbTiO3 solid solutions . This observation is unique to multiferroics only as the TN in non-multiferroic AFM oxides decreases with particle size. Our results provide a scientific basis for designing room temperature single phase multiferroics, useful for making multifunctional device operating at room temperature.

In this paper we show that we can use a modified version of the h-p spectral element method proposed in \cite{duttora1,duttom,duttora2,tomarth} to solve elliptic problems with general boundary conditions to exponential accuracy on polygonal domains using nonconforming spectral element functions. A geometrical mesh is used in a neighbourhood of the corners. With this mesh we seek a solution which minimizes the sum of a weighted squared norm of the residuals in the partial differential equation and the squared norm of the residuals in the boundary conditions in fractional Sobolev spaces and enforce continuity by adding a term which measures the jump in the function and its derivatives at inter-element boundaries, in fractional Sobolev norms, to the functional being minimized. In the neighbourhood of the corners, modified polar coordinates are used and a global coordinate system elsewhere. A stability estimate is derived for the functional which is minimized based on the regularity estimate in \cite{babguo1}. We examine how to parallelize the method and show that the set of common boundary values consists of the values of the function at the corners of the polygonal domain. The method is faster than that proposed in \cite{duttora1,duttom,tomarth} and the h-p finite element method and stronger error estimates are obtained.
