We present a gas selection for Xe-based gas electron multiplier (GEM) detectors, Gas Multiplier Counters (GMCs) onboard the CubeSat X-ray observatory NinjaSat. To achieve an energy bandpass of 2-50 keV, we decided to use a Xe-based gas mixture at a pressure of 1.2 atm that is sensitive to high-energy X-rays. In addition, an effective gain of over 300 is required for a single GEM so that the 2 keV X-ray signal can be sufficiently larger than the electrical noise. At first, we measured the effective gains of GEM in nine Xe-based gas mixtures (combinations of Xe, Ar, CO2, CH4, and dimethyl ether; DME) at 1.0 atm. The highest gains were obtained with Xe/Ar/DME mixtures, while relatively lower gains were obtained with Xe/Ar/CO2, Xe/Ar/CH4, and Xe+quencher mixtures. Based on these results, we selected the Xe/Ar/DME (75%/24%/1%) mixture at 1.2 atm as the sealed gas for GMC. Then we investigated the dependence of an effective gain on the electric fields in the drift and induction gaps ranging from 100-650 V cm$^{-1}$ and 500-5000 V cm$^{-1}$, respectively, in the selected gas mixture. The effective gain weakly depended on the drift field while it was almost linearly proportional to the induction field: 2.4 times higher at 5000 V cm$^{-1}$ than at 1000 V cm$^{-1}$. With the optimal induction and drift fields, the flight model GMC achieves an effective gain of 460 with an applied GEM voltage of 590 V.

Magnetars are the most strongly magnetized neutron stars, and one of the most promising targets for X-ray polarimetric measurements. We present here the first Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observation of the magnetar 1RXS J170849.0-400910, jointly analysed with a new Swift observation and archival NICER data. The total (energy and phase integrated) emission in the 2-8 keV energy range is linerarly polarized, at a ~35% level. The phase-averaged polarization signal shows a marked increase with energy, ranging from ~20% at 2-3 keV up to ~80% at 6-8 keV, while the polarization angle remain constant. This indicates that radiation is mostly polarized in a single direction. The spectrum is well reproduced by a combination of either two thermal (blackbody) components or a blackbody and a power law. Both the polarization degree and angle also show a variation with the spin phase, and the former is almost anti-correlated with the source counts in the 2-8 keV and 2-4 keV bands. We discuss the possible implications and interpretations, based on a joint analysis of the spectral, polarization and pulsation properties of the source. A scenario in which the surface temperature is not homogeneous, with a hotter cap covered by a gaseous atmosphere and a warmer region in a condensed state, provides a satisfactory description of both the phase- and energy-dependent spectro-polarimetric data. The (comparatively) small size of the two emitting regions, required to explain the observed pulsations, does not allow to reach a robust conclusion about the presence of vacuum birefringence effects.

Photochromic diarylethene is known to exhibit reversible photoisomerization under irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) and visible light. Besides reversible optical properties upon light irradiation, a variety of discontinuous morphological changes are reported in the literature, such as sudden crystal bending, cracking, and photosalient effects, which are caused simply by UV and visible light irradiation. These morphological phenomena with discontinuities are micro-scale changes caused by photoisomerization at the nanoscale and lead to the realization of important functions as optical devices. However, the theoretical models behind these phenomena are not well understood. In this paper, we construct a mathematical model that can treat diverse phenomena in a unified model by using swallow-tail catastrophe, a higher-order catastrophe than cusp catastrophe, from the seven elementary catastrophes that can describe discontinuities in the phenomena. By introducing the hyperbolic operating curves in the model, intrinsic properties of the photochromic crystals are represented. The induced morphogenesis, such as bending, cracking, and photosalient, are systematically classified by the proposed catastrophe model, which even implies unexplored operating conditions of the crystals and explains known phenomena. The proposed catastrophe-theory-based modeling provides a foundation for understanding and discovering the versatile morphogenesis in photochromic crystals. Furthermore, the proposed approach provides a basis for understanding and discovering various morphological changes in photochromic crystals and similar systems.

We demonstrate history-dependent or dynamic nano-photoisomerization by sequential formation of multiple memory pathways in photochromic crystals via optical near-field interactions. We observed the incident photons passing through the photoisomerization memory pathways by a double-probe optical near-field microscope, with one probe located on the front surface for local excitation and the other on the rear surface for near-field observation. By carrying out localized near-field excitation twice but at spatially different positions, we observed negatively correlated near-field output patterns between the first memory pathway and the second memory pathway. That is, the added memory pathway was formed exclusively to the previously formed memory pathway. We also confirmed that the first memory pathway was preserved after the second memory pathway was formed. This result indicates that photoisomerization by an optical near-field in diarylethene crystals has a history dependence, leading to brain-like dynamic information memorization using light-matter interactions on the nanometer-scale.

The IXPE 35 observations of the anomalous x-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61 reveal a linear polarization degree of $(12\pm 1)\%$ throughout the IXPE 2--8 keV band. We detect a substantial variation of the polarization with energy: the degree is $(14\pm 1)\%$ at 2--4 keV and $(41\pm 7)\%$ at 5.5--8 keV, while it drops below the instrumental sensitivity around 4--5 keV, where the polarization angle swings by $\sim 90^\circ$. The IXPE observations give us completely new information about the properties of the neutron star surface and magnetosphere and lend further support to the presence of the quantum mechanical effect of vacuum birefringence.

We have previously observed an irregular spatial distribution of photon transmission through a photochromic crystal photoisomerized by a local optical near-field excitation, manifesting complex branching processes via the interplay of deformation of the material and near-field photon transfer therein. Furthermore, by combining such naturally constructed complex photon transmission with a simple photon detection protocol, Schubert polynomials, the foundation of versatile permutation operations in mathematics, have been generated. In this study, we demonstrate an order recognition algorithm inspired by Schubert calculus using optical near-field statistics via nanometre-scale photochromism. More specifically, by utilizing Schubert polynomials generated via optical near-field patterns, we show that the order of slot machines with initially unknown reward probability is successfully recognized. We emphasize that, unlike conventional algorithms in the literature, the proposed principle does not estimate the reward probabilities. Instead, it exploits the inversion relations contained in the Schubert polynomials. To quantitatively evaluate the impact of the Schubert polynomials generated from an optical near-field pattern, order recognition performances are compared with uniformly distributed and spatially strongly skewed probability distributions, where the optical near-field pattern outperforms the others. We found that the number of singularities contained in Schubert polynomials and that of the given problem or considered environment exhibits a clear correspondence, indicating that superior order recognition performances may be attained if the singularity of the given problem is presupposed. This study paves a new way toward nanophotonic intelligent devices and systems by the interplay of complex natural processes and mathematical insights gained by Schubert calculus.

In this paper we shall review the design, manufacturing, and test of the IXPE focal-plane detectors, with particular emphasis on the connection between the science drivers, the performance metrics and the operational aspects. We shall present a thorough characterization of the GPDs in terms of effective noise, trigger efficiency, dead time, uniformity of response, and spectral and polarimetric performance. In addition, we shall discuss in detail a number of instrumental effects that are relevant for high-level science analysis -- particularly as far as the response to unpolarized radiation and the stability in time are concerned.

We propose a concept of multiplexing lobster-eye (MuLE) optics to achieve significant reductions in the number of focal plane imagers in lobster-eye (LE) wide-field X-ray monitors. In the MuLE configuration, an LE mirror is divided into several segments and the X-rays reflected on each of these segments are focused on a single image sensor in a multiplexed configuration. If each LE segment assumes a different rotation angle, the azimuthal rotation angle of a cross-like image reconstructed from a point source by the LE optics identifies the specific segment that focuses the X-rays on the imager. With a focal length of 30 cm and LE segments with areas of 10 x 10 cm^2, ~1 sr of the sky can be covered with 36 LE segments and only four imagers (with total areas of 10 x 10 cm^2). A ray tracing simulation was performed to evaluate the nine-segment MuLE configuration. The simulation showed that the flux (0.5 to 2 keV) associated with the 5-sigma detection limit was ~2 x 10^-10 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (10 mCrab) for a transient with a duration of 100 s. The simulation also showed that the direction of the transient for flux in the range of 14 to 17 mCrab at 0.6 keV was determined correctly with 99.7% confidence limit. We conclude that the MuLE configuration can become an effective on-board device for small satellites for future X-ray wide-field transient monitoring.

If $F$ is concentrated on $[0,\infty)$, it is relatively stable if and only if $\ell(x) :=\int_0^x F\{(t,\infty)\}dt$ is slowly varying at infinity; our result entails that if $F$ is non-arithmetic and relatively stable, then $\lim_{x\to\infty}\, \ell(x)U\{[x, x+h)\} = h$ for each $h>0$. This surpasses the known result due to Erickson \cite{Ec}, the latter assuming the stronger condition that $xF\{(x,\infty)\}$ is slowly varying. An obvious analog also holds for arithmetic variables.

Generation of irregular time series based on physical processes is indispensable in computing and artificial intelligence. In this report, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the generation of Schubert polynomials, which is the foundation of versatile permutations in mathematics, via optical near-field processes introduced in a photochromic crystal of diarylethene, which optical near-field excitation on the surface of a photochromic single crystal yields a chain of local photoisomerization, forming a complex pattern on the opposite side of the crystal. The incoming photon travels through the nanostructured photochromic crystal, and the exit position of the photon exhibits a versatile pattern. We experimentally generated Schubert matrices, corresponding to Schubert polynomials, via optical near-field density map**. The versatility and correlations of the generated patterns could be reconfigured in either a soft or hard manner by adjusting the photon detection sensitivity. This is the first study of Schubert polynomial generation by physical processes or nanophotonics, paving the way toward future nano-scale intelligence devices and systems.

This paper concerns a scaling limit of a one-dimensional random walk $S^x_n$ started from $x$ on the integer lattice conditioned to avoid a non-empty finite set $A$, the random walk being assumed to be irreducible and have zero mean. Suppose the variance $σ^2$ of the increment law is finite. Given positive constants $b$, $c$ and $T$ we consider the scaled process $S^{b_N}_{[tN]}/σ\sqrt N$, $0\leq t \leq T$ started from a point $b_N \approx b\sqrt N$ conditioned to arrive at another point $\approx -c\sqrt N$ at $t=T$ and avoid $A$ in between and discuss the functional limit of it as $N\to\infty$. We show that it converges in law to a continuous process if $E[|S_1|^3; S_1<0] <\infty$. If $E[|S_1|^3; S_1<0] =\infty$ we suppose $P[S_1<u]$ to vary regularly as $u\to -\infty$ with exponent $-β$, $2\leq β\leq 3$ and show that it converges to a process which has one downward jump that clears the origin if $β<3$; in case $β=3$ there arises the same limit process as in case $E[|S_1|^3; S_1<0] <\infty$. In case $σ^2=\infty$ we consider the special case when $S_1$ belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law of index $1<α<2$ having no negative jumps and obtain analogous results.

We consider a recurrent random walk of i.i.d. increments on the one-dimensional integer lattice and obtain a formula relating the hitting distribution of a half-line with the potential function, $a(x)$, of the random walk. Applying it, we derive an asymptotic estimate of $a(x)$ and thereby a criterion for $a(x)$ to be bounded on a half-line. The application is also made to estimate some hitting probabilities as well as to derive asymptotic behaviour for large times of the walk conditioned never to visit the origin.

Let $S_n =X_1+\cdots +X_n$ be an irreducible random walk (r.w.) on the one dimensional integer lattice with zero mean, infinite variance and i.i.d. increments $X_n$. We obtain an upper and lower bounds of the potential function, $a(x)$, of $S_n$ in the form $a(x)\asymp x/m(x)$ under a reasonable condition on the distribution of $X_n$; we especially show that as $x\to\infty$ $$a(x) \asymp \frac{x}{m_-(x)} \quad\mbox{and}\quad \frac{a(-x)}{a(x)} \to 0 \quad\;\;\mbox{if}\quad \lim_{x\to +\infty} \frac{m_+(x)}{m_-(x)} =0,$$ where $m_\pm(x) = \int_0^xdy\int_y^\infty P[\pm X_1>u]du$ and $m=m_++m_-$. Under certain conditions on the tails of the distribution of $X$ we derive precise asymptotic forms of $a(x)$ as $x\to +\infty$ or/and $-\infty$. The results are applied to derive a sufficient condition for the relative stability of the ladder height and estimates of some escape probabilities from the origin; we show among others that under the above condition on $m_+/m-$, $P[S_n>0] \to 1/α$ if and only if the probability of exiting a long interval $[-Q,R]$ through the upper boundary converges to $λ^{α-1}$ as $Q/(Q+R) \to λ$ for any $0<λ<1$.

This paper concerns a random walk on a planar graph and presents certain estimates concerning the harmonic measures for the walk in a grid domain which estimates are useful for showing the convergence of a LERW (loop-erased random walk) to an SLE (stochastic Loewner evolution). We assume that the walk started at a fixed vertex of the graph satisfies the invariance principle as in Yadin and Yehudayoff [16] in which the convergence of LERW to a radial SLE is established in this setting. Our main concern is chordal case, where a random walk is started at a boundary vertex of a simply connected grid domain and conditioned to exit it through another boundary vertex specified in advance. The primary contribution of the present paper is an estimate, which states that the excursion of the conditioned walk leaves an intrinsic neighborhood of its initial point not 'along' the boundary but through an intrinsic interior of the domain with high probability. Based on this result we give a proof for the convergence to the chordal SLE, a result that has recently been proved by Suzuki [12] under an analyticity assumption on the boundary of the domain arising in the limit.

Within the parabolic regime $|{\bf x}|\vee |{\bf y}| = O(\sqrt t)$ in particular $p^A_t({\bf x},{\bf y})$ is shown to behave like $4e_A({\bf x})e_A({\bf y}) (\lg t)^{-2} p_t({\bf y}-{\bf x})$ for large $t$, where $p_t({\bf y}-{\bf x})$ is the transition kernel of the Brownian motion (without killing) and $e_A$ is the Green function for the \lq exterior of $A$' with a pole at infinity normalized so that $e_A({\bf x}) \sim \lg |{\bf x}|$. We also provide fairly accurate upper and lower bounds of $p^A_t({\bf x},{\bf y})$ for the case $|{\bf x}|\vee |{\bf y}|>t$ as well as corresponding results for the higher dimensions.

We derive the asymptotic form of $p_A^n(x, y)$ for large $n$ valid uniformly in the regime characterized by the conditions $|x|\vee |y| =O(\sqrt n)$ and $|x|\wedge |y|= o(\sqrt n)$, in which $p^A_t({\bf x},{\bf y})$ behaves for large $n$ like $[g_A^{+}(x)\hat g_{A}^{\,+}(y) + g_A^-(x)\hat g_{A}^{\,-}(y)] (σ^{2}/2n) p^n(y-x)$. Here $p^n(y-x)$ is the transition kernel of the random walk (without killing); $g^\pm_A$ are the Green functions for the "exterior" of $A$ with "pole at $\pm \infty$" normalized so that $g^\pm_A(x) \sim 2|x|/σ^2$ as $x \to \pm\infty$; and $\hat g_A^{\, \pm}$ are the corresponding Green functions for the time-reversed walk.

The equation for each individual consumers is assumed and the equation of social response to each hit subject is derived as stochastic process of statistical physics. The advertisement effect is included as external force and the communication effects are included as two-body and three-body interaction. The applications of this model are demonstrated for analyzing population of weekly TV drama. Including both the realtime view data and the playback view data, we found that the indirect communication correlate strongly to the TV viewing rate data for recent Japanese 20 TV drama.

The asymptotic form of its density is obtained when either the hitting time or the starting site $B_0$ becomes large. Our results entail that if Brownian motion is started at ${\bf x}$ and conditioned to hit $U(a)$ at time $t$ for the first time, the distribution of the hitting site approaches the uniform distribution or the point mass at $a{\bf x}/|{\bf x}|$ according as $|{\bf x}|/t$ tends to zero or infinity; in each case we provide a precise asymptotic estimate of the density. In the case when $|{\bf x}|/t$ tends to a positive constant we show the convergence of the density and derive an analytic expression of the limit density.

Abstract:
The expected areas of the Wiener sausages swept by a disc attached to the two-dimensional Brownian Bridge joining the origin to a point x over a time interval [0,t] are computed. It is proved that the leading term of the expectation is given by Ramanujan's function if (x,t) remains in a parabolic region. The corresponding result for unconditioned process is also obtained.

It is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally that the low energy density of states $N(E)$ is described by a singular V-shape form $N(E)=N_0(H)+α|E|+O(E^2)$ for all clean superconductors in a vortex state, irrespective of the underlying gap structure. The linear term $α|E|$ which has been not recognized so far is obtained by exactly evaluating the vortex contribution. Based on microscopic Eilenberger theory $N(E)$ is evaluated for isotropic gap, line and point node gaps to yield a V-shape $N(E)$. STS-STM experiments on NbSe$_2$ and YNi$_2$B$_2$C give direct evidence for this. We provide arguments on significance of this finding and on relevance to other experiments.

The B(E2:0_1^+ -> 2_1^+) values of the Ba isotopes (Z=56) exhibit a sharp increase in deformation as the neutron numbers approach the mid-shell value of N=66. This behavior is anomalous because the 2_1^+ level energies are very similar to those of the neighboring isotopes. By means of the axially-symmetric deformed Woods-Saxon (WS) hamiltonian plus the BCS method, we investigated the systematics of B(E2) of the Ba isotopes. We showed that 15% of the B(E2) values at N=66 was due to the level crossing, occurring at the deformation with beta being nearly 0.3, between the proton orbits originating from the orbits Omega=1/2^-(h11/2) and 9/2^+(g9/2) at zero deformation. The latter of these two was an intruder orbit originating from below the energy gap at Z=50, rising higher in energy with the deformation and intruding the Z=50-82 shell. These two orbits have the largest magnitude of the quadrupole moment with a different sign among the orbits near and below the Fermi surface. Occupancy and non-occupancy of these orbits by protons thus affect B(E2:0_1^+ -> 2_1^+) significantly.
