We provide a unified presentation of extensions of the Minimal Dark Matter framework in which new fermionic electroweak multiplets are coupled to each other via the Standard Model Higgs doublet. We study systematically the generic features of all the possibilities, starting with a singlet and two doublets (akin to Bino-Higgsino dark matter) up to a Majorana quintuplet coupled to two Weyl quadruplets. We pay special attention to this last case, since it has not yet been discussed in the literature. We estimate the parameter space for viable dark matter candidates. This includes an estimate for the mass of a quasi-pure quadruplet dark matter candidate taking into account the Sommerfeld effect. We also argue how the coupling to the Higgs can bring the Minimal Dark Matter scenario within the reach of present and future direct detection experiments.

We study in detail the top-charm flavour-changing interaction, by investigating the single top plus large missing energy signature at the LHC as well as constraints from the relic density and direct and indirect dark matter detection experiments. We present strategies to distinguish between the top-charm and top-up flavour-changing models by taking advantage of the lepton charge asymmetry as well as by using charm-tagging techniques on an extra jet. We also show the complementarity between the LHC and canonical dark matter experiments in exploring the viable parameter space of the models.

The Singlet-Doublet model of dark matter is a minimal extension of the Standard Model with dark matter that is a mixture of a singlet and a non-chiral pair of electroweak doublet fermions. The stability of dark matter is ensured by the typical parity symmetry, and, similar to a "Bino-Higgsino" system, the extra matter content improves gauge coupling unification. We revisit the experimental constraints on the Singlet-Doublet dark matter model, combining the most relevant bounds from direct (spin independent and spin dependent) and indirect searches. We show that such comprehensive analysis sets strong constraints on a large part of the 4-dimensional parameter space, closing the notorious "blind-spots" of spin independent direct searches. Our results emphasise the complementarity of direct and indirect searches in probing dark matter models in diverse mass scale regimes. We also discuss the LHC bounds on such scenario, which play a relevant role in the low mass region of the dark matter candidate.

It has been claimed that Dirac gaugino masses are necessary for realistic models of low-scale supersymmetry breaking, and yet very little attention has been paid to the phenomenology of a light gravitino when gauginos have Dirac masses. We begin to address this deficit by investigating the couplings and phenomenology of the gravitino in the effective Lagrangian approach. We pay particular attention to the phenomenology of the scalar octets, where new decay channels open up. This leads us to propose a new simplified effective scenario including only light gluinos, sgluons and gravitinos, allowing the squarks to be heavy -- with the possible exception of the third generation. Finally, we comment on the application of our results to Fake Split Supersymmetry.

In the context of supersymmetric models where the gauginos may have both Majorana and Dirac masses we investigate the general constraints from flavour-changing processes on the scalar mass matrices. One finds that the chirality-flip suppression of flavour-changing effects usually invoked in the pure Dirac case holds in the mass insertion approximation but not in the general case, and fails in particular for inverted hierarchy models. We quantify the constraints in several flavour models which correlate fermion and scalar superpartner masses. We also discuss the limit of very large Majorana gaugino masses compared to the chiral adjoint and Dirac masses, where the remaining light eigenstate is the "fake" gaugino, including the consequences of suppressed couplings to quarks beyond flavour constraints.

We study the most general extension of the MSSM Lagrangian that includes scenarios in which supersymmetry is spontaneously broken at a low scale f. The spurion that parametrizes supersymmetry breaking in the MSSM is promoted to a dynamical superfield involving the goldstino, with (and without) its scalar superpartner, the sgoldstino. The low energy effective Lagrangian is written as an expansion in terms of m_{SUSY}/sqrt{f}, where m_{SUSY} is the induced supersymmetry breaking scale, and contains, in addition to the usual MSSM Lagrangian with the soft terms, couplings involving the component fields of the goldstino superfield and the MSSM fields. This Lagrangian can provide significant corrections to the usual couplings in the Standard Model and the MSSM. We study how these new corrections affect the Higgs couplings to gauge bosons and fermions, and how LHC bounds can be used in order to constrain f. We also discuss that, from the effective field theory point of view, the couplings of the goldstino interactions are not determined by any symmetry, and their usual simple relation to the soft terms is corrected by higher-dimensional operators.

This work consists of two parts. In the first part we construct the complete extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model by higher dimensional effective operators and study its phenomenology. These operators encapsulate the effects on LHC physics of possible new degrees of freedom at the multiTeV scale. The effective analysis includes the case where the multiTeV physics is the supersymmetry breaking sector itself. Beyond the new effective couplings, the analysis suggests an interpretation of the 'little hierarchy problem' as an indication of new physics at multiTeV scale. In the second part we explore the power of constrained superfields in extended supersymmetry. It is known that in N = 2 supersymmetry the gauge kinetic function cannot depend on hypermultiplet scalars. However, it is also known that the low energy effective action of a D-brane in an N = 2 supersymmetric bulk includes the DBI action, where the gauge kinetic function does depend on the dilaton. We show how the nonlinearization of the second SUSY (imposed by the presence of the D-brane) opens this possibility, by constructing the global N = 1 linear + 1 nonlinear invariant coupling of a hypermultiplet with a gauge multiplet. The constructed theory enjoys interesting features, including a novel super-Higgs mechanism without gravity.

We continue a previous study of the MSSM Higgs Lagrangian extended by all effective operators of dimension d=6 that can be present beyond the MSSM, consistent with its symmetries. By supersymmetry, such operators also extend the neutralino and chargino sectors, and the corresponding component fields Lagrangian is computed onshell. The corrections to the neutralino and chargino masses, due to these operators, are computed analytically in function of the MSSM corresponding values. For individual operators, the corrections are small, of few GeV for the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) viable parameter space. We investigate the correction to the lightest Higgs mass, which receives, from individual operators, a supersymmetric correction of up to 4 (6) GeV above the 2-loop leading-log CMSSM value, from those CMSSM phase space points with: EW fine tuning Delta<200, consistent with WMAP relic density (3$σ$), and for a scale of the operators of M=10 (8) TeV, respectively. Applied to the CMSSM point of minimal fine tuning (Delta=18), such increase gives an upper limit $m_h=120(122)\pm 2$ GeV, respectively. The increase of m_h from individual operators can be larger ($\sim$ 10-30 GeV) for those CMSSM phase space points with Delta>200; these can now be phenomenologically viable, with reduced Delta, and this includes those points that would have otherwise violated the LEP2 bound by this value. The neutralino/chargino Lagrangian extended by the effective operators can be used in studies of dark matter relic density within extensions of the MSSM, by implementing it in public codes like micrOMEGAs.

Using the formalism of constrained superfields, we derive the most general effective action of a light goldstino coupled to the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and study its phenomenological consequences. The goldstino-induced couplings become important when the (hidden sector) scale of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking, $\sqrt f$, is relatively low, of the order of few TeV. In particular, we compute the Higgs potential and show that the (tree level) mass of the lightest Higgs scalar can be increased to the LEP bound for $\sqrt f\sim 2$ TeV to 7 TeV. Moreover, the effective quartic Higgs coupling is increased due to additional tree-level contributions proportional to the ratio of visible to hidden sector supersymmetry breaking scales. This increase can alleviate the amount of fine tuning of the electroweak scale that exists in the MSSM. Among the new goldstino couplings, beyond those in MSSM, the most important ones generate an invisible decay of the Higgs boson into a goldstino and neutralino (if m_h>m_{χ_1^0}), with a partial decay rate that can be comparable to the SM channel h^0-> γγ. A similar decay of Z boson is possible if m_Z>m_{χ_1^0} and brings a lower bound on $\sqrt f$ that must be of about 700 GeV. Additional decay modes of the Higgs or Z bosons into a pair of light goldstinos, while possible, are suppressed by an extra 1/f factor and have no significant impact on the model.

The string coupling of N=2 supersymmetric compactifications of type II string theory on a Calabi-Yau manifold belongs to the so-called universal dilaton hypermultiplet, that has four real scalars living on a quaternion-Kaehler manifold. Requiring Heisenberg symmetry, which is a maximal subgroup of perturbative isometries, reduces the possible manifolds to a one-parameter family that describes the tree-level effective action deformed by the only possible perturbative correction arising at one-loop level. A similar argument can be made at the level of global supersymmetry where the scalar manifold is hyper-Kaehler. In this work, the connection between global and local supersymmetry is explicitly constructed, providing a non-trivial gravity decoupled limit of type II strings already in perturbation theory.

We derive the coupling of a hypermultiplet of N=2 global supersymmetry to the Dirac-Born-Infeld Maxwell theory with linear N=1 and a second nonlinear supersymmetry. At the level of global supersymmetry, this construction corresponds to the interaction with Maxwell brane fields of bulk hypermultiplets, such as the universal dilaton of type IIB strings compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold. It displays in particular the active role of a four-form field. Constrained N=1 and N=2 superfields and the formulation of the hypermultiplet in its single-tensor version are used to derive the nonlinear realization, allowing a fully off-shell description. Exact results with explicit symmetries and supersymmetries are then obtained. The electric-magnetic dual version of the theory is also derived and the gauge structure of the interaction is exemplified with N=2 nonlinear QED of a charged hypermultiplet. Its Higgs phase describes a novel super-Higgs mechanism without gravity, where the goldstino is combined with half of the hypermultiplet into an N=1 massive vector multiplet.

The corrections to the masses of the neutral CP-even and CP-odd Higgs bosons due to the d=5 and d=6 operators are computed. When the d=5 and d=6 operators are generated by the same physics (i.e. when suppressed by powers of the same scale M), due to the relative $\tanβ$ enhancement of the latter, which compensates their extra scale suppression (1/M), the mass corrections from d=6 operators can be comparable to those of d=5 operators, even for conservative values of the scale M. We identify the effective operators with the largest individual corrections to the lightest Higgs mass and discuss whether at the microscopic level and in the simplest cases, these operators are generated by "new physics" with a sign consistent with an increase of m_h. Simple numerical estimates easily allow an increase of m_h due to d=6 operators alone in the region of 10-30 GeV, while for a much larger increase light new states beyond MSSM may be needed, in which case the effective description is unreliable. Special attention is paid to the treatment of the effective operators with higher derivatives. These can be removed by non-linear field redefinitions or by an "unfolding" technique, which effectively ensure that any ghost degrees of freedom (of mass $\geqsim M$) are integrated out and absent in the effective theory at scales much smaller than M. Considering general coefficients of the susy operators with a scale of new physics above the LHC reach, it is possible to increase the tree-level prediction for the Higgs mass to the LEPII bound, thus alleviating the MSSM fine-tuning.

The origin and the implications of higher dimensional effective operators in 4-dimensional theories are discussed in non-supersymmetric and supersymmetric cases. Particular attention is paid to the role of general, derivative-dependent field redefinitions which one can employ to obtain a simpler form of the effective Lagrangian. An application is provided for the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model extended with dimension-five R-parity conserving operators, to identify the minimal irreducible set of such operators after supersymmetry breaking. Among the physical consequences of this set of operators are the presence of corrections to the MSSM Higgs sector and the generation of "wrong"-Higgs Yukawa couplings and fermion-fermion-scalar-scalar interactions. These couplings have implications for supersymmetry searches at the LHC.

We perform a general analysis of the R-parity conserving dimension-five operators that can be present beyond the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Not all these operators are actually independent. We present a method which employs spurion-dependent field redefinitions that removes this "redundancy" and establishes the minimal, irreducible set of these dimension-five operators. Their potential effects on the MSSM Higgs sector are discussed to show that the tree level bound $m_h\leq m_Z$ cannot be easily lifted within the approximations used, and quantum corrections are still needed to satisfy the LEPII bound. An ansatz is provided for the structure of the remaining couplings in the irreducible set of D=5 operators, which avoids phenomenological constraints from flavor changing neutral currents. The minimal set of operators brings new couplings in the effective Lagrangian, notably "wrong"-Higgs Yukawa couplings and contact fermion-fermion-scalar-scalar interactions, whose effects are expected to be larger than those generated in the MSSM at loop or even tree level. This has implications in particular for LHC searches for supersymmetry by direct squark production.
