Abstract:
In spite of the fact that there are different techniques in the creation of the high-quality liquid crystals (LCs) alignment by means of various surfaces, the azimuthal and polar anchoring energies as well as the pre-tilt angle are important parameters to all of them. Here, the modified by a certain manner aligning layers, previously formed by nonlinear laser lithography (NLL), having high-quality…

In spite of the fact that there are different techniques in the creation of the high-quality liquid crystals (LCs) alignment by means of various surfaces, the azimuthal and polar anchoring energies as well as the pre-tilt angle are important parameters to all of them. Here, the modified by a certain manner aligning layers, previously formed by nonlinear laser lithography (NLL), having high-quality nano-periodic grooves on Ti surfaces, recently proposed for LC alignment was studied. The change of the scanning speed of NLL in the process of nano-structured Ti surfaces and their further modification by means of ITO-coating, and deposition of polyimide film has enabled different aligning layers, whose main characteristics, namely azimuthal and polar anchoring energies, were measured. For the modified aligning layers, the dependencies of the twist and pre-tilt angles for LC cells filled by nematic E7 (Δε > 0) and MLC-6609 (Δε < 0) were obtained. Also the contact angle for droplets of isotropic liquid (glycerol), and nematic LCs was measured for the various values of the scanning speed during the laser processing.

A new Godunov-type numerical code with a non-linear Riemann solver for equations of relativistic hydrodynamics

Abstract:
We present a second-order upwind numerical scheme for equations of relativistic hydrodynamics with a source term. A new non-linear Riemann solver is constructed. Solution of a Riemann problem on a cells boundary is based on exact relations in case of zero tangential velocities. In this sense our solver is "exact". In case of non-zero tangential velocities a reasonable approximation is made that…

Solution of a Riemann problem on a cells boundary is based on exact relations in case of zero tangential velocities. In this sense our solver is "exact". In case of non-zero tangential velocities a reasonable approximation is made that allows to avoid solution of very complicated exact equations. The scheme is tested on several one- and three-dimensional solutions demonstrating a good performance for both strong shocks and strong rarefactions.

Abstract:
We present a criterion for a shock wave existence in relativistic magnetic hydrodynamics with an arbitrary (possibly non-convex) equation of state. The criterion has the form of algebraic inequality that involves equation of state of the fluid; it singles out the physical solutions and it can be easily checked for any discontinuity satisfying concervation laws. The method of proof uses introduct…

The method of proof uses introduction of small viscosity into the coupled set of equations of motion of ideal relativistic fluid with infinite conductivity and Maxwell equations.

Abstract:
We analyse the stability of a magnetized medium consisting of a neutral fluid and a fluid of charged particles, coupled to each other through a drag force and exposed to differential body forces (for example, as the result of radiation forces on one phase). We consider a uniform equilibrium and simple model input physics, but do not arbitrarily restrict the relative orientations of the magnetic…

We analyse the stability of a magnetized medium consisting of a neutral fluid and a fluid of charged particles, coupled to each other through a drag force and exposed to differential body forces (for example, as the result of radiation forces on one phase). We consider a uniform equilibrium and simple model input physics, but do not arbitrarily restrict the relative orientations of the magnetic field, slip velocity and wave vector of the disturbance. We find several instabilities and classify these in terms of wave resonances. We briefly apply our results to the structure of SiO maser regions appearing in the winds from late-type stars.
