The ability of bipedal robots to adapt to diverse and unstructured terrain conditions is crucial for their deployment in real-world environments. To this end, we present a novel, bio-inspired robot foot design with stabilizing tarsal segments and a multifarious sensor suite involving acoustic, capacitive, tactile, temperature, and acceleration sensors. A real-time signal processing and terrain classification system is developed and evaluated. The sensed terrain information is used to control actuated segments of the foot, leading to improved ground contact and stability. The proposed framework highlights the potential of the sensor-integrated adaptive foot for intelligent and adaptive locomotion.

Abstract:
We study a nonlinear Schrödinger-Poisson system which reduces to the nonlinear and nonlocal equation \[- Δu+ u + λ^2 \left(\frac{1}{ω|x|^{N-2}}\star ρu^2\right) ρ(x) u = |u|^{q-1} u \quad x \in \mathbb R^N, \] where $ω= (N-2)|\mathbb{S}^{N-1}|,$ $λ>0,$ $q\in(2,2^{\ast} -1),$ $ρ:\mathbb R^N \to \mathbb R$ is nonnegative and locally bounded, $N=3,4,5$ and $2^*=2N/(N-2)$ is the critical Sobolev expon…

Our results cover the range $p\in(2,3)$ where the lack of compactness phenomena may be due to the combined effect of the invariance by translations of a `limiting problem' at infinity and of the possible unboundedness of the Palais-Smale sequences. Moreover, we find necessary conditions for concentration at points to occur for solutions to the singularly perturbed problem \begin{equation}\nonumber \left\{\begin{array}{lll}
- ε^2Δu+ u + ρ(x) φu = |u|^{p-1} u, \qquad &x\in \mathbb R^3,
\,\,\, -Δφ=ρ(x) u^2,\ & x\in \mathbb R^3, \end{array} \right. \end{equation} in various functional settings which are suitable for both variational and perturbation methods.

We report, for the first time, a full experimental and computational investigation of all possible light matter interactions on the surface of an infrared metamaterial absorber (MMA). Two channels of energy dissipation - diffuse scattering and generation of surface electromagnetic waves - are quantified in terms of their impact on specular absorption. The diffuse scattering is found to play a negligible roll in the absorption process, at least for wavelengths greater than the periodicity of unit cell. In contrast, surface electromagnetic waves are found to be generated for transverse magnetic (TM) polarized light at the operational wavelength of the MMA, i.e. λ_0, and shorter wavelengths. Our computational results indicate that the highly lossy surface electromagnetic wave generated at λ_0 is responsible for the good angular dependence of absorption in TM polarization. Experimental results are supported by full wave three dimensional electromagnetic and eigenmode simulations.

Reconfigurable metamaterial-based apertures can play a unique role in both imaging and in beam-forming applications, where current technology relies mostly on the fabrication and integration of large detector or antenna arrays. Here, we report the experimental demonstration of a voltage-controlled, silicon-based electromagnetic metamaterial operating in the W-band (75-110 GHz). In this composite semiconductor metamaterial, patterned gold metamaterial elements serve both to manage electromagnetic wave propagation while simultaneously acting as electrical Schottky contacts that control the local conductivity of the semiconductor substrate. The active device layers consist of a patterned metal on a 2-μm-thick n-doped silicon layer, adhesively bonded to a transparent Pyrex wafer. The transmittance of the composite metamaterial can be modulated over a given frequency band as a function of bias voltage. We demonstrate a quantitative understanding of the composite device through the application of numerical approaches that simultaneously treat the semiconductor junction physics as well as wave propagation.

In this paper we demonstrate, for the first time, selective thermal emitters based on metamaterials perfect absorbers. We experimentally realize a narrow band mid-infrared (MIR) thermal emitter. Multiple metamaterial sublattices further permit construction of a dual-band MIR emitter. By performing both emissivity and absorptivity measurements, we find that emissivity and absorptivity agree very well as predicted by Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation. Our results directly demonstrate the great flexibility of metamaterials for tailoring blackbody emission.
