Sampling From Multiscale Densities With Delayed Rejection Generalized Hamiltonian Monte Carlo
Abstract: With the increasing prevalence of probabilistic programming languages, Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) has become the mainstay of applied Bayesian inference. However HMC still struggles to sample from densities with multiscale geometry: a large step size is needed to efficiently explore low curvature regions while a small step size is needed to accurately explore high curvature regions. We introduce… ▽ More

Exactly Azimuthal Pixelizations of the Sky
Abstract: We investigate various pixelizations of the sky which allow for fast spherical transforms, for implementation in full sky CMB experiments such as Planck and MAP. We study the effect of varying pixel shape and area on the extraction of the CMB power spectrum. We argue for the benefits of having a truly azimuthal, or `igloo' pixelization. Such pixelizations are simple and allow for fast, exact sim… ▽ More

Ringing the eigenmodes from compact manifolds
Abstract: We present a method for finding the eigenmodes of the Laplace operator acting on any compact manifold. The procedure can be used to simulate cosmic microwave background fluctuations in multi-connected cosmological models. Other applications include studies of chaotic mixing and quantum chaos.

Correlations Between the Cosmic X-ray and Microwave Backgrounds: Constraints on a Cosmological Constant
Abstract: In universes with significant curvature or cosmological constant, cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies are created very recently via the Rees-Sciama or integrated Sachs-Wolfe effects. This causes the CMB anisotropies to become partially correlated with the local matter density (z < 4). We examine the prospects of using the hard (2-10 keV) X-ray background as a probe of the local densit… ▽ More

Lattice Chern-Simons Number Without Ultraviolet Problems
Abstract: We develop a topological method of measuring Chern-Simons number change in the real time evolution of classical lattice SU(2) and SU(2) Higgs theory. We find that the Chern-Simons number diffusion rate per physical 4-volume is very heavily suppressed in the broken phase, and that it decreases with lattice spacing in pure Yang-Mills theory, although not as quickly as predicted by Arnold, Son, and… ▽ More

Classical Field Dynamics of the Electroweak Phase Transition
Abstract: We investigate the thermodynamics and dynamics of the electroweak phase transition by modelling the infrared physics with classical Yang-Mills Higgs theory. We discuss the accuracy of this approach and conclude that, for quantities whose determination is dominated by the infrared, the classical method should be correct up to parametrically suppressed (ie O(alpha)) corrections. For a Higgs self-c… ▽ More

The Doppler Peaks from Cosmic Texture
Abstract: We compute the angular power spectrum of temperature anisotropies on the microwave sky in the cosmic texture theory, with standard recombination assumed. The spectrum shows `Doppler' peaks analogous to those in scenarios based on primordial adiabatic fluctuations such as `standard CDM', but at quite different angular scales. There appear to be excellent prospects for using this as a discriminant… ▽ More

Temperature-Polarization Correlations from Tensor Fluctuations
Abstract: We study the polarization-temperature correlations on the cosmic microwave sky resulting from an initial scale invariant spectrum of tensor (gravity wave) fluctuations, such as those which might arise during inflation. The correlation function has the opposite sign to that for scalar fluctuations on large scales, raising the possibility of a direct determination of whether the microwave anisotro… ▽ More
