The nonlinear wave propagation in large extra spatial dimensions (on and above $d=2$) is investigated in the context of nonlinear electrodynamics theories that depends exclusively on the invariant $\mathcal{F}$. In this vein, we consider propagating waves under the influence of external uniform electric and magnetic fields. Features related to the blackbody radiation in the presence of a background constant electric field such as the generalization of the spectral energy density distribution and the Stefan-Boltzmann law are obtained. Interestingly enough, anisotropic contributions to the frequency spectrum appear in connection to the nonlinearity of the electromagnetic field. In addition, the long wavelength regime and the Wien's displacement law in this situation are studied. The corresponding thermodynamics quantities at thermal equilibrium, such as energy, pressure, entropy and heat capacity densities are contemplated as well.

We study the blackbody properties and the thermodynamic equilibrium quantities of a photon gas in the framework of nonlinear electrodynamics. In this vein, we take into account the photon propagation in a uniform external magnetic field in the weak field approximation, where an angular anisotropic energy density distribution appears in the frequency spectrum. The particular case when the photon propagates perpendicular to the background magnetic field is also discussed, which allows us to probe the strong field regime. We then derive a modified blackbody spectral distribution and the Stefan-Boltzmann law in this situation. Considerations about Wien's displacement law and the Rayleigh-Jeans formula are contemplated as well. Deviations from the thermodynamic quantities at thermal equilibrium such as energy, pressure, entropy, and heat capacity densities are obtained from the Helmholtz free energy. As an application, we study three nonlinear electrodynamics, namely, the Euler-Heisenberg, the generalized Born-Infeld, and the logarithmic electrodynamics. Possible implications on stellar systems with strong magnetic fields such as magnetars are discussed.

We study the emergence of quasicrystal configurations produced purely by quantum fluctuations in the ground-state phase diagram of interacting bosonic systems. By using a variational mean-field approach, we determine the relevant features of the pair interaction potential that stabilize such quasicrystalline states in two dimensions. Unlike their classical counterpart, in which the interplay between only two wave vectors determines the resulting symmetries of the solutions, the quantum picture relates in a more complex way to the instabilities of the excitation spectrum. Moreover, the quantum quasicrystal patterns are found to emerge as the ground state with no need of moderate thermal fluctuations. The study extends to the exploration of the excitation properties and the possible existence of super-quasicrystals, i.e. supersolid-like quasicrystalline states in which the long-range non-periodic density profile coexist with a non-zero superfluid fraction. Our calculations show that, in an intermediate region between the homogeneous superfluid and the normal quasicrystal phases, these exotic states indeed exist at zero temperature. Comparison with full numerical simulations provides a solid verification of the variational approach adopted in this work.

In this contribution, we start off from a fully relativistic description of a single electron non-minimally coupled to an external electromagnetic field. Making direct use of the field equation, instead of canonically deriving from the Lagrangian density, the relativistic total angular momentum is attained, where the effect of the relativistic torque due to the external sources is also taken into account. Both the spin density and the orbital angular momentum tensors are identified in the relativistic-covariant approach. Furthermore, the symmetric and gauge invariant energy-momentum tensor is derived as well. In addition, to inspect the non-relativistic regime, a perturbative expansion of the field equation up to the leading order in $\left(v/c\right)$ is carried out, where spin-orbit interaction terms naturally emerge in the non-relativistic Hamiltonian as a consequence of the non-minimal coupling. Features related to the spin currents, the spin-transfer torque and their dependence on both magnetic and electric external fields are then calculated and discussed. Considering that spin-orbit coupled systems are of particular interest in the study of spin Hall effect, a two-dimensional (planar) scenario of the system is contemplated, where the contributions to the Landau levels are re-assessed. As a consequence of the planar regime and the non-minimal coupling, a peculiar sort of fractionalization of the spin-up and -down components emerges with the different spin components localized in distinct positions.

The aforementioned derivation is performed using relativistic and non-relativistic Bose-Einstein condensates. In addition, we demonstrate that the (2+1) planar AdS black hole can be mapped into the non-relativistic acoustic metric. Given that AdS black holes are extensively employed in the gauge/gravity duality, we then comment on the possibility to study the AdS/CFT correspondence and gravity/fluid duality from an analogue gravity perspective.

Relativistic Bose-Einstein condensates (rBECs) have recently become a well-established system for analogue gravity. Indeed, while such relativistic systems cannot be yet realized experimentally, they provide an interesting framework for mimicking metrics for which no analogue is yet available, so paving the way for further theoretical and numerical explorations. In this vein, we here discuss black holes in rBECs and explore how their features relate to the bulk properties of the system. We then propose the coupling of external fields to the rBEC as a way to mimic non-metric features. In particular, we use a Proca field to simulate an aether field, as found in Einstein-Aether or Horava-Lifshitz gravity. This allows us to mimic a universal horizon, the causal barrier relevant for superluminal modes in these modified gravitational theories.

We consider a higher-derivative extension of QED modified by the addition of a gauge-invariant dimension-6 kinetic operator in the U(1) gauge sector. The Feynman diagrams at one-loop level are then computed. The modification in the spin-1 sector leads the electron self-energy and vertex corrections diagrams finite in the ultraviolet regime. Indeed, no regularization prescription is used to calculate these diagrams because the modified propagator always occurs coupled to conserved currents. Moreover, besides the usual massless pole in the spin-1 sector, there is the emergence of a massive one, which becomes complex when computing the radiative corrections at one-loop order. This imaginary part defines the finite decay width of the massive mode. To check consistency, we also derive the decay length using the electron--positron elastic scattering and show that both results are equivalent. Because the presence of this unstable mode, the standard renormalization procedures cannot be used and is necessary adopt an appropriate framework to perform the perturbative renormalization. For this purpose, we apply the complex-mass shell scheme (CMS) to renormalize the aforementioned model. As an application of the formalism developed, we estimate a quantum bound on the massive parameter using the measurement of the electron anomalous magnetic moment and compute the Uehling potential. At the end, the renormalization group is analyzed.

In the analogue gravity framework, the acoustic disturbances in a moving fluid can be described by an equation of motion identical to a relativistic scalar massless field propagating in a curved spacetime. This description is possible only when the fluid under consideration is barotropic, inviscid and irrotational. In this case, the propagation of the perturbations is governed by an acoustic metric which depends algebrically on the local speed of sound, density and the background flow velocity, the latter assumed to be vorticity free. In this work we provide an straightforward extension in order to go beyond the irrotational constraint. Using a charged --- relativistic and non-relativistic --- Bose--Einstein condensate as a physical system, we show that in the low momentum limit and performing the eikonal approximation we can derive a d'Alembertian equation of motion for the charged phonons where the emergent acoustic metric depends on a flow velocity in the presence of vorticity.

We find that unitarity at tree-level can be assured for pure spacelike, timelike and lightlike background four-vectors (the last two under restrictions upon the allowed momenta). We then analyze the non-relativistic interparticle potential energy behavior for different background four-vectors and compare to the usual Coulomb potential.

Three bounds on the LW heavy photon mass are then estimated. It is amazing that one of these bounds, actually the most reliable one, is of the order of the vectorial bosons masses found in nature. The lowest order modification of the Coulomb potential due to the presence of the higher-derivative term is obtained afterward by means of two outstanding methods: one of them is based on the marriage of quantum mechanics with the nonrelativistic limit of quantum field theory; the other, pioneered by Dirac, makes use of a gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. Interestingly enough, these approaches, despite being radically different, lead to the same result which seems to indicate that they are equivalent term by term.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) being the most luminous among known cosmic objects carry an essential potential for cosmological studies if properly used as standard candles. In this paper we test with GRBs the cosmological predictions of the Gurzadyan-Xue (GX) model of dark energy, a novel theory that predicts, without any free parameters, the current vacuum fluctuation energy density close to the value inferred from the SNIa observations. We also compare the GX results with those predicted by the concordance scenario $Λ$-CDM. According to the statistical approach by Schaefer (2007), the use of several empirical relations obtained from GRBs observables, after a consistent calibration for a specific model, enables one to probe current cosmological models. Based on this recently introduced method, we use the 69 GRBs sample collected by Schaefer (2007); and the most recently released SWIFT satellite data (Sakamoto et al. 2007) together with the 41 GRBs sample collected by Rizzuto et al. (2007), which has the more firmly determined redshifts. Both data samples span a distance scale up to redshift about 7. We show that the GX models are compatible with the Hubble diagram of the Schaefer (2007) 69 GRBs sample. Such adjustment is almost identical to the one for the concordance $Λ$-CDM.

The Hubble diagram (HD) of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) having properly estimated redshifts is compared with the predicted one for the Chaplygin gas (CG), a dark energy candidate. The CG cosmology and that of Friedmann and $Λ$-CDM models are studied and confronted to the GRBs observations. The model-to-sample $χ^2$ statistical analysis indicates the CG model as the best fit. The present GRBs HD plot exhibits a marked trend: as one goes back in time, it gets much closer to the predict HD for a Friedmann universe. This clear trend conclusively demonstrates that a transition from decelerate to accelerate expansion did take place. However, contrarily to claims based on supernovae type Ia, the transition redshift lies somewhere between $\sim 2.5 < z \simeq 3.5$ rather than at $z \sim 0.5-1$. All of these striking features of the GRBs HD constitute the most robust demonstration that the Chaplygin gas can in fact be the universe's driving dark energy field.

In this {\sl Letter} we construct the Hubble diagram (HD) for the standard Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmological model after enforcing it with the general relativistic energy conditions, heeding to investigate whether it still stands on as the leading scenario for cosmology in face of the distance modulus-redshift relation of a sample of GRBs that had their redshifts properly estimated and corrected upon applying on the data analysis the {\sl Ghirlanda relation} (Ghirlanda et al. 2004) and the recently discovered {\sl Firmani et al. relation} (Firmani et al. 2006a). Our $χ^2$ analysis support the view that FLRW plus the strong energy condition (SEC) is what better fits the GRB data. But this is not the whole story, since for a cosmological constant $Λ\neq 0$ the FLRW+SEC analysis with undefined $p=p(ρ)$ suggests that $Λ$ is not constant anyhow, because it does not follows the $p= ωρ$ HD, with $ω=-1$. Thenceforth, one concludes that either the cosmological constant does not exist at all, and consequently one is left with the FLRW+SEC which fits properly the GRBs HD and there is no late-time acceleration, or it does exist but should be time-varying. This all is contrary to current views based on SNIa observations that advogate for an actual constant $Λ$ and an accelerating universe. In connection to the results above, this last argumentation would imply that either there is something wrong with the SNIa interpretation regarding cosmic late-time acceleration (Middleditch 2006) or we will have to move away from general relativity. We would better to think that general relativity is still the most correct theory of gravity.
