The problem of orbital collapse of the $5g$ and $6f$ electrons in atoms of superheavy elements (SHE) is considered. Previously, the presence of the orbital collapse was established for the $4f$ and $5f$ elements of the periodic table. Because of the large centrifugal term for the $f$ and $g$ electrons, the effective radial potential has two wells, one narrow and deep and the other wide but shallow. Depending on the external parameters, the electron can be either localized in the outer well with low binding energy and large average radius or in the inner one with higher energy and smaller radius. In this work, we demonstrate the existence of the orbital collapse for the $5g$ electrons when changing the total angular momentum $J$ of the atom. We also found that for some SHE elements, two different solutions of the same Dirac-Fock equations may coexist, with the $5g$ electron localized either in the inner or outer well. In both cases, the radial wave functions are nodeless. The problem of the dual-state coexistence is studied by the configuration-interaction method in the Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbital basis as well.

The ground X1Σ+ state potential energy curve (PEC) and dipole moment curve (DMC) of CO molecule have been revisited within the framework of the relativistic coupled-cluster approach, which incorporates non-perturbative single, double, and triple cluster amplitudes (CCSDT) in conjunction with a finite-field methodology. The generalized relativistic pseudo-potential model was used for the effective introducing the relativity in all-electron correlation treatment and accounting the quantum-electrodynamics (QED) corrections within the model-QED-operator approach. The diagonal Born-Oppenheimer correction to PEC has been evaluated using the CCSD approach. The sensitivity of resulting PEC and DMC to variations in basis set parameters and regular intramolecular perturbations were considered as well. The present ab initio results are in a reasonable agreement with their most accurate semi-empirical counterparts.

Positron creation probabilities as well as energy and angular distributions of outgoing positrons in slow collisions of two identical heavy nuclei are obtained within the two-center approach beyond the monopole approximation. The time-dependent Dirac equation for positron wave functions is solved with the help of the generalized pseudospectral method in modified prolate spheroidal coordinates adapted for variable internuclear separation. Depending on the nuclear charge, the results are obtained for both subcritical and supercritical regimes of the positron creation. The signatures of transition to the supercritical regime in the total positron creation probabilities and energy spectra are discussed. The angular distributions of emitted positrons demonstrate a high degree of isotropy.

The $^{229}$Th nucleus has a long-lived isomeric state $A^*$ at 8.338(24) eV [Kraemer et al, Nature, \textbf{617}, 706 (2023)]. This state is connected to the ground state by an M1 transition. For a hydrogenlike Th ion in the $1s$ state the hyperfine structure splitting is about 0.7 eV. This means that the hyperfine interaction can mix the nuclear ground state with the isomeric state with a mixing coefficient $β$ about 0.03. If the electron is suddenly removed from this system, the nucleus will be left in the mixed state. The probability to find the nucleus in the isomeric state $A^*$ is equal to $β^2\sim 10^{-3}$. For the $2s$ state the effect is roughly two orders of magnitude smaller. An atom with a hole in the $1s$ or $2s$ shell is similar to the hydrogenlike atom, only the hole has a short lifetime $τ$. After the hole is filled, there is a non-zero probability to find the nucleus in the $A^*$ state. Estimates of this probability are presented along with a discussion of possible experiments on Th-doped xenotime-type orthophosphate crystals and other broad band gap materials.

The binding-energy differences for $^{163}\mathrm{Ho}^{q+}$ and $^{163}\mathrm{Dy}^{q+}$ ions with ionization degrees $q = 38$, $39$, and $40$ are calculated. The calculations are performed using the large-scale relativistic configuration-interaction and relativistic coupled-clusters methods. The contributions from quantum-electrodynamics, nuclear-recoil, and frequency-dependent Breit-interaction effects are taken into account. The final uncertainty does not exceed $1$ eV. Combining the obtained results with the binding-energy difference for neutral atoms calculated in [Savelyev et al., Phys. Rev. A 105, 012806 (2022)], we get the secondary differences of the ion-atom binding energies. These values can be used to evaluate the amount of energy released in the electron capture process in $^{163}\mathrm{Ho}$ atom (the $Q$ value), provided mass differences of highly charged ions $^{163}\mathrm{Ho}^{q+}$ and $^{163}\mathrm{Dy}^{q+}$ is known from experiment. The $Q$ value is required by experiments on the determination of the absolute scale of the electron neutrino mass by studying the beta-decay process.

The model-QED-operator approach [Phys. Rev. A 88, 012513 (2013)] to calculations of the radiative corrections to binding and transition energies in atomic systems is extended to the range of nuclear charges $110 \leqslant Z \leqslant 170$. The self-energy part of the model operator is represented by a nonlocal potential based on diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements of the ab initio self-energy operator with the Dirac-Coulomb wave functions. The vacuum-polarization part consists of the Uehling contribution which is readily computed for an arbitrary nuclear-charge distribution and the Wichmann-Kroll contribution represented in terms of matrix elements similarly to the self-energy part. Performance of the method is studied by comparing the model-QED-operator predictions with the results of ab initio calculations. The model-QED operator can be conveniently incorporated in any numerical approach based on the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian to account for the QED effects in a wide variety of superheavy elements.

The decay rate calculations are carried out by a hybrid approach that combines configuration interaction and the linearized coupled cluster method (CI+all-order method). The measurements provide a much needed precision benchmark for testing the accuracy of the CI+all-order approach for such complicated systems with six valence electrons, allowing to significantly expand its applicability. Relativistic calculations of the electronic structure of the superheavy element of the eighth period $-$ eka-francium ($Z=119$) and its homologues, which form the group of alkali metals, are performed in the framework of the configuration-interaction method and many-body perturbation theory using the basis of the Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbitals (DFS). The obtained values of the ionization potentials, electron affinities, and root-mean-square radii are compared with the corresponding values calculated within the non-relativistic approximation. A comparison with the available experimental data and the results of previous theoretical calculations is given as well. The analysis of the obtained results indicates a significant influence of the relativistic effects for the francium and eka-francium atoms, which leads to a violation of the monotonic behaviour of the listed above chemical properties as a function of the alkaline-element atomic number. In addition, the quantum electrodynamics corrections to the ionization potentials are evaluated by employing the model Lamb-shift operator (QEDMOD).

The strong mixing of close levels with two valence electrons in Be-like xenon greatly complicates ab initio QED calculations beyond the first-order approximation. Due to a strong interplay between the electron-electron correlation and QED effects, the standard single-level perturbative QED approach may fail, even if it takes into account the second-order screened QED diagrams. In the present Letter, the corresponding obstacles are overcome by working out the QED perturbation theory for quasidegenerate states. The contributions of all the Feynman diagrams up to the second order are taken into account. The many-electron QED effects are rigorously evaluated in the framework of the extended Furry picture to all orders in the nuclear-strength parameter $αZ$. The higher-order electron-correlation effects are considered within the Breit approximation. The nuclear recoil effect is accounted for as well. The developed approach is applied to high-precision QED calculations of the ground and singly excited energy levels in Be-like xenon. The most accurate theoretical predictions for the binding and excitation energies are obtained. These results deviate from the most precise experimental value by $3σ$ but perfectly agree with a more recent measurement.

In slow collisions of two bare nuclei with the total charge number larger than the critical value, $Z_{\rm cr} \approx 173$, the initially neutral vacuum can spontaneously decay into the charged vacuum and two positrons. Detection of the spontaneous emission of positrons would be the direct evidence of this fundamental phenomenon. However, the spontaneous emission is generally masked by the dynamical positron emission, which is induced by a strong time-dependent electric field created by the colliding nuclei. In our recent paper [I.A. Maltsev et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 113401 (2019)] it has been shown that the spontaneous pair production can be observed via measurements of the pair-production probabilities for a given set of nuclear trajectories. In the present paper, we have significantly advanced this study by exploring additional aspects of the process we are interested in. We calculate the positron energy spectra and find that these spectra can give a clear signature of the transition from the subcritical to the supercritical regime. It is found that focusing on a part of the positron spectrum, which accounts for the energy region where the spontaneously created positrons can contribute, allows to get a much stronger evidence of the transition to the supercritical mode, making it very well pronounced in collisions, for example, of two uranium nuclei. The possibility of extending this study to collisions of bare nuclei with neutral atoms is also considered. The probability of a vacancy in the lowest-energy state of a quasimolecule which is formed in collisions of a bare U nucleus with neutral U and Cm atoms has been calculated. The relatively large values of this probability make such collisions suitable for observing the vacuum decay.

Large-scale $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations of the electric field gradient, which constitutes the electronic contribution to the electric quadrupole hyperfine constant $B$, were performed for the $5s^25p6s$ $^{1,3}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ excited states of tin, using three independent computational strategies of the variational multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method and a fourth approach based on the configuration interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm theory. For the $5s^25p6s$ $^{1}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ state, the final value of $B/Q =703(50)$ MHz/b differs by $0.4\%$ from the one recently used by Yordanov ${\it et~al.}$ [Communications Physics ${\bf 3}$, 107 (2020)] to extract the nuclear quadrupole moments, $Q$, for tin isotopes in the range $^{(117-131)}$Sn from collinear laser spectroscopy measurements. Efforts were made to provide a realistic theoretical uncertainty for the final $B/Q$ value of the $5s^25p6s\,^{1}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ state based on statistical principles and on correlation with the magnetic dipole hyperfine constant $A$.

Recent experimental progress in cooling, trap**, and quantum logic spectroscopy of highly-charged ions (HCIs) made HCIs accessible for high resolution spectroscopy and precision fundamental studies. Based on these achievements, we explore a possibility to develop optical clocks using transitions between the ground and a low-lying excited state in the Cf$^{15+}$ and Cf$^{17+}$ ions. Using a high-accuracy relativistic method of calculation we predicted the wavelengths of clock transitions, calculated relevant atomic properties, and analyzed a number of systematic effects (such as the electric quadrupole-, micromotion-, and quadratic Zeeman shifts of the clock transitions) that affect the accuracy and stability of the optical clocks. We also calculated magnetic dipole hyperfine-structure constants of the clock states and the blackbody radiation shifts of the clock transitions.

(Quasi)resonance electron-capture processes in non-symmetrical $(Z_{\rm P} \simeq 2Z_{\rm T})$ heavy ion-atom collisions are studied employing a semiclassical atomic Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbital coupled-channel approach within an independent-particle model. %A special attention has been paid to study a role of the relativistic effects. Systematic calculations of the electron-capture cross sections of the target $K$-shell electrons to the $L$ subshells of the projectile have been carried out for the collisions of bare thorium $(Z_{\rm P}=90)$ and zinc $(Z_{\rm P}=30)$ nuclei with hydrogenlike ions $(Z_{\rm T}=36$-$47)$ and $(Z_{\rm T}=12$-$15)$, correspondingly. Strong relativistic effects, crucial for the case of Th$^{90+}$-Ru$^{43+}(1s)$ collisions in the low-energy regime, are found. Various one- and two-electron capture processes occurring in course of the collisions of the two-electron system Th$^{90+}$-Ru$^{42+}(1s^2)$ have been investigated in details in the wide range of collision energies $0.5$-$50$~MeV/u. The impact parameter dependencies of the double electron-capture processes are also presented. Our study demonstrates a very significant role of the relativistic effects for the processes, which becomes crucial in the low-energy regime.

Later, it was reported by [Volotka ${\it et \, al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 100}$, 010502(R) (2019)] that {\it ab initio} QED calculation, including the first-order one-electron QED contributions and the related effects of two-electron screening, yields the result which restores the agreement between theory and experiment and strongly disagrees with the model-potential Lamb shift values. In the present paper, the model Lamb shift operator [Shabaev ${\it et \, al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 88}$, 012513 (2013)] is used to evaluate the QED effects on the $^2P_{1/2}-{}^2P_{3/2}$ fine structure in F-like ions. The calculations are performed by incorporating this operator into the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit equation employing different methods. It is demonstrated that the methods, based on including the Lamb shift operator either into the Dirac-Fock equations or into the calculations by perturbation theory, lead to the theoretical results which are in good agreement with each other and with experiment. The restriction of these results to the first order in the QED effects leads to a value which agrees with the aforementioned ${\it ab\, initio}$ QED result.

We have developed a broadly-applicable approach that drastically increases the ability to accurately predict properties of complex atoms. We applied it to the case of Ir$^{17+}$, which is of particular interest for the development of novel atomic clocks with high sensitivity to the variation of the fine-structure constant and dark matter searches.
The clock transitions are weak and very difficult to identity without accurate theoretical predictions. In the case of Ir$^{17+}$, even stronger electric-dipole (E1) transitions eluded observation despite years of effort raising the possibility that theory predictions are grossly wrong. In this work, we provide accurate predictions of transition wavelengths and E1 transition rates in Ir$^{17+}$. Our results explain the lack of observation of the E1 transitions and provide a pathway towards detection of clock transitions. Computational advances demonstrated in this work are widely applicable to most elements in the periodic table and will allow to solve numerous problems in atomic physics, astrophysics, and plasma physics.

The calculations are performed by means of the $1/Z$ perturbation theory. Within the independent-electron approximation, the one- and two-electron recoil contributions are evaluated to all orders in the parameter $αZ$ by employing a fully relativistic approach. The interelectronic-interaction correction of first order in $1/Z$ is treated within the Breit approximation. Higher orders in $1/Z$ are partially taken into account by incorporating the screening potential into the zeroth-order Hamiltonian. The most accurate to date theoretical predictions for the nuclear recoil contribution to the bound-electron $g$ factor are obtained.

The theoretical predictions for the Lamb shift and the hyperfine splitting in heavy ions are compared with available experimental data. Recent achievements and future prospects in studies of the $g$ factor with highly charged ions are also reported. These studies can provide precise determination of the fundamental constants and tests of QED within and beyond the Furry picture at the strong-coupling regime. Theoretical calculations of the electron-positron pair creation probabilities in low-energy heavy-ion collisions are also considered. Special attention is paid to tests of QED in supercritical-field regime, which can be accessed in slow collisions of two bare nuclei with the total charge number larger than the critical value, $Z_{\rm crit} \approx 173$. In the supercritical field, the initially neutral vacuum can spontaneously decay into the charged vacuum and two positrons. It is demonstrated that this fundamental phenomenon can be observed via impact-sensitive measurements of the pair-production probabilities.

In the present work we demonstrate that methods of the soft X-ray emission spectroscopy (SXES) can be used as a powerful tool for the comprehensive analysis of the electronic and structural properties of lithium silicides Li$_{x}$Si forming in LIB's anode upon Si lithiation. On the basis of density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations it is shown that coordination of Si atoms in Li$_{x}$Si decreases with increase in Li concentration both for the crystalline and amorphous phases. In amorphous a-Li$_{x}$Si alloys Si tends to cluster forming Si-Si covalent bonds even at the high lithium concentration. It is demonstrated that the Si-L$_{2,3}$ emission bands of the crystalline and amorphous Li$_{x}$Si alloys show different spectral dependencies reflecting the process of disintegration of Si-Si network into Si clusters and chains of the different sizes upon Si lithiation. The Si-L$_{2,3}$ emission band of Li$_{x}$Si alloys become narrower and shifts towards higher energies with an increase in Li concentration. The shape of the emission band depends on the relative contribution of the X-ray radiation from the Si atoms having different coordination. This feature of the Si-L$_{2,3}$ spectra of Li$_{x}$Si alloys can be used for the detailed analysis of the Si lithiation process and LIB's anode structure identification.

Abstract:
The nuclear recoil effect on the $g$ factor of H- and Li-like heavy ions is evaluated to all orders in $αZ$. The calculations include an approximate treatment of the nuclear size and the electron-electron interaction corrections to the recoil effect. As the result, the second largest contribution to the theoretical uncertainty of the $g$-factor values of $^{208}$Pb$^{79+}$ and $^{238}$U$^{89+}$ is…

The nuclear recoil effect on the $g$ factor of H- and Li-like heavy ions is evaluated to all orders in $αZ$. The calculations include an approximate treatment of the nuclear size and the electron-electron interaction corrections to the recoil effect. As the result, the second largest contribution to the theoretical uncertainty of the $g$-factor values of $^{208}$Pb$^{79+}$ and $^{238}$U$^{89+}$ is strongly reduced. Special attention is paid to tests of the QED recoil effect on the $g$ factor in experiments with heavy ions. It is found that, while the QED recoil effect on the $g$-factor value is masked by the uncertainties of the nuclear size and nuclear polarization contributions, it can be probed on a few-percent level in the specific difference of the $g$ factors of H- and Li-like heavy ions. This provides a unique opportunity to test QED in a new region --- strong-coupling regime beyond the Furry picture.

Abstract:
The nuclear recoil effect on the $g$ factor of Li-like ions is evaluated. The one-electron recoil contribution is treated within the framework of the rigorous QED approach to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio $m/M$ and to all orders in the parameter $αZ$. These calculations are performed in a range $Z=3-92$. The two-electron recoil term is calculated for low- and middle-$Z$ ions wi…

The one-electron recoil contribution is treated within the framework of the rigorous QED approach to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio $m/M$ and to all orders in the parameter $αZ$. These calculations are performed in a range $Z=3-92$. The two-electron recoil term is calculated for low- and middle-$Z$ ions within the Breit approximation using a four-component approach. The results for the two-electron recoil part obtained in the paper strongly disagree with the previous calculations performed using an effective two-component Hamiltonian. The obtained value for the recoil effect is used to calculate the isotope shift of the $g$ factor of Li-like $^{A}$Ca$^{17+}$ with $A=40$ and $A=48$ which was recently measured. It is found that the new theoretical value for the isotope shift is closer to the experimental one than the previously obtained value.

The method is applied to ionization of the atomic hydrogen by antiproton impact, as a non-relativistic benchmark. The fully differential, as well as various doubly and singly differential cross sections for ionization are presented. The role of the interaction between the projectile and the target nucleus is discussed. Several discrepancies in available theoretical predictions are resolved. The relativistic effects are studied for ionization of hydrogenlike xenon ion under the impact of carbon nuclei.

The quantum electrodynamics (QED) corrections are directly incorporated into the most accurate treatment of the correlation corrections for ions with complex electronic structure of interest to metrology and tests of fundamental physics. We compared the performance of four different QED potentials for various systems to access the accuracy of QED calculations and to make prediction of highly charged ion properties urgently needed for planning future experiments. We find that all four potentials give consistent and reliable results for ions of interest. For the strongly bound electrons the nonlocal potentials are more accurate than the local potential.

A weighted difference of the $g$-factors of the Li- and H-like ion of the same element is studied and optimized in order to maximize the cancellation of nuclear effects. To this end, a detailed theoretical investigation is performed for the finite nuclear size correction to the one-electron $g$-factor, the one- and two-photon exchange effects, and the QED effects. The coefficients of the $Zα$ expansion of these corrections are determined, which allows us to set up the optimal definition of the weighted difference. It is demonstrated that, for moderately light elements, such weighted difference is nearly free from uncertainties associated with nuclear effects and can be utilized to extract the fine-structure constant from bound-electron $g$-factor experiments with an accuracy competitive with or better than its current literature value.

We have further developed and extended a method for calculation of atomic properties based on a combination of the configuration interaction and coupled-cluster approach. We have applied this approach to the calculation of different properties of atomic lead, including the energy levels, hyperfine structure constants, electric-dipole transition amplitudes, and E1 parity nonconserving (PNC) amplitude for the (6p^2) ^3P_0 - (6p^2) ^3P_1 transition. The uncertainty of the E1 PNC amplitude was reduced by a factor of two in comparison with the previous most accurate calculation [V.~A.~Dzuba et.al., Europhys. Lett. 7, 413 (1988)]. Our value for the weak charge Q_W=-117(5) is in agreement with the standard model prediction.
